Abstract:Nano- and submicron SiC/A356 composites were prepared using the liquid ultrasonic-assisted semisolid stirring method. The particle distribution, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the nano- and submicron SiC/A356 composites were studied and subsequently to analyze the impact of the strengthening mechanism on the composite's yield strength. Nano-SiC particles are distributed within α-Al dendrites and eutectic structures in composites and submicron SiC particles are distributed at eutectic structures. Considering the Brownian motion of particles, as the size of SiC particles decreases, Brownian motion gradually becomes the main factor affects the motion of SiC particles in alloy melt. Nano-SiC particles smaller than the critical size are captured by the solidification interface front due to the Brownian motion, while submicron SiC particles larger than the critical size are repelled by the solidification interface front due to not being affected by Brownian motion. Due to the addition of hybrid SiC particles, α-Al dendrites can be significantly refined to a minimum of 30 μm. The main reason for α-Al dendrite refinement is that SiC particles hinder dendrite growth. The addition of hybrid SiC particles, the yield strength, tensile strength, and fracture strain of the composites are 158, 239 MPa, and 7.9%, respectively. The strengthening mechanism of nano-/submicron hybrid SiC/A356 composites is mainly thermal mismatch strengthening, followed by Orowan strengthening and Hall–Petch strengthening, and the smallest is load transfer strengthening.
