Abstract:In the first chapters we studied approximation to real numbers by rationals. We now take up approximation to real numbers by algebraic numbers. This is quite different from the questions e.g. considered in Chapter V on approximation to algebraic numbers by rationals.

Computer Aided Geometric Design

Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to give a global approximation of an implicit real plane algebraic curve with rational quadratic B-spline curves. The algorithm consists of four steps: topology determination, curve segmentation, segment approximation and curve tracing. Due to the detailed geometric analysis, high accuracy of approximation may be achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. The final approximation keeps many important geometric features of the original curve such as the topology, convexity and sharp points. Our method is implemented and experiments show that it may achieve better approximation bound with less segments than previously known methods. We also extend the method to approximate spatial algebraic curves.

Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

In this paper, applying Dirichlet's approximation theorem to certain algebraic numbers$\;\theta,$ e.g.$\;\theta=\sqrt[n]{d},d\in N,n\geq 3,d>0;$ $\;\theta^{3}+b_{1}\theta-b_{0}=0,b_{0}>0;$ $\;\theta^{4}+b_{2}\theta^{2}-b_{0}=0,\;b_{0}>0.$ We proved that there exists a effective constant$\;C=C(\theta)$ such that$\;|p-q\theta|>Cq^{-1}$ for all$\;p/q.$ Our theorem shows their sequence of partial quotients can not be unbounded.

Abstract:Central limit theorems (CLTs) have a long history in probability and statistics. They play a fundamental role in constructing valid statistical inference procedures. Over the last century, various techniques have been developed in probability and statistics to prove CLTs under a variety of assumptions on random variables. Quantitative versions of CLTs (e.g., Berry--Esseen bounds) have also been parallelly developed. In this article, we propose to use approximation theory from functional analysis to derive explicit bounds on the difference between expectations of functions.

Abstract:Comparison to traditionally accurate computing, approximate computing focuses on the rapidity of the satisfactory solution, but not the unnecessary accuracy of the solution. Approximate bisimularity is the approximate one corresponding to traditionally accurate bisimilarity. Based on the work of distances between basic processes, we propose an algebraic approach for distances between processes to support a whole process calculus CCS, which contains prefix, sum, composition, restriction, relabeling and recursion.

Abstract:A nonsingular real algebraic variety Y is said to have the approximation property if for every real algebraic variety X the following holds: if f:X-->Y is a C^inf map that is homotopic to a regular map, then f can be approximated in the C^inf topology by regular maps. In this paper, we characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property. We also characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property combined with a suitable interpolation condition. Some of our results have variants concerning the regular approximation of continuous maps defined on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties.

Abstract:We consider conic inequality systems of the type$F(x)\ge_K 0$, with approximate solution $x_0$ associated to a parameter $\tau$,where $F$ is a twice Fréchet differentiable function between Hilbert spaces $X$ and $Y$, and$\ge_K$ is the partial order in $Y$ defined by anonempty convex (not necessarily closed) cone $K\subseteq Y$.We prove that, under the suitable conditions,the system $F(x)\ge_K 0$is solvable, and the ratio of the distance from $x_0$ to the solution set $S$ over the distance from $F(x_0)$ to the cone $K$ has anupper bound given explicitlyin terms of $\tau$ and $x_0$. We show that the upper bound is sharp.Applications to analytic function inequality/equality systems on Euclidean spaces are given,and the corresponding results of Dedieu [ SIAM J. Optim. , 11 (2000), pp. 411--425] are extended and significantly improved.

Abstract:In 1974, M. B. Nathanson proved that every irrational number $\alpha$ represented by a simple continued fraction with infinitely many elements greater than or equal to $k$ is approximable by an infinite number of rational numbers $p/q$ satisfying $|\alpha-p/q|<1/(\sqrt{k^2+4}q^2)$. Abstract:Several construction methods for rational approximations to functions of one real variable are described in the present paper; the computational results that characterize the comparative accuracy of these methods are presented; an effect of error autocorrection is considered. This effect occurs in efficient methods of rational approximation (e.g., Pade approximations, linear and nonlinear Pade-Chebyshev approximations) where very significant errors in the coefficients do not affect the accuracy of the approximation. The matter of import is that the errors in the numerator and the denominator of a fractional rational approximant compensate each other. This effect is related to the fact that the errors in the coefficients of a rational approximant are not distributed in an arbitrary way but form the coefficients of a new approximant to the approximated function. Understanding of the error autocorrection mechanism allows to decrease this error by varying the approximation procedure depending on the form of the approximant. Some applications are described in the paper. In particular, a method of implementation of basic calculations on decimal computers that uses the technique of rational approximations is described in the Appendix. To a considerable extent the paper is a survey and the exposition is as elementary as possible.

Abstract:Reverse Mathematics (RM for short) is a program in the foundations of mathematics where the aim is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. Generally, the minimal axioms are equivalent to the theorem at hand, assuming a weak logical system called the base theory. Moreover, many (most?) theorems are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of four logical systems, together called the Big Five. For instance, the Weierstrass approximation theorem, i.e. that a continuous function can be approximated uniformly by a sequence of polynomials, has been classified in RM as being equivalent to weak Koenig's lemma, the second Big Five system. In this paper, we study approximation theorems for discontinuous functions via Bernstein polynomials from the literature. We obtain (many) equivalences between the latter and weak Koenig's lemma. We also show that slight variations of these approximation theorems fall far outside of the Big Five but fit in the recently developed RM of new 'big' systems, namely the uncountability of R, the enumeration principle for countable sets, the pigeon-hole principle for measure, and the Baire category theorem. In conclusion, one equivalence in second-order RM, namely for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, gives rise to many equivalences in higher-order RM, and we hope the case study in this paper can serve as a kind of template.

Abstract:In this article, we show new effective approximation measures for the shifted logarithm of algebraic numbers which belong to a number field of arbitrary degree. Our measures refine previous ones including those for usual logarithms. We adapt Pade approximants constructed by M. Kawashima and A. Poels in the rational case. Our key ingredient relies on the Poincare-Perron theorem which gives us asymptotic estimates at every archimedean place of the number field, that we apply to decide whether the shifted logarithm lies outside of the number field. We use Perron's second theorem and its modification due to M. Pituk to handle general cases.

Abstract:In his seminal 1961 paper, Wirsing studied how well a given transcendental real number $\xi$ can be approximated by algebraic numbers $\alpha$ of degree at most $n$ for a given positive integer $n$, in terms of the so-called naive height $H(\alpha)$ of $\alpha$. He showed that the infimum $\omega^*_n(\xi)$ of all $\omega$ for which infinitely many such $\alpha$ have $|\xi-\alpha| \le H(\alpha)^{-\omega-1}$ is at least $(n+1)/2$. He also asked if we could even have $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge n$ as it is generally expected. Since then, all improvements on Wirsing's lower bound were of the form $n/2+\mathcal{O}(1)$ until Badziahin and Schleischitz showed in 2021 that $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge an$ for each $n\ge 4$, with $a=1/\sqrt{3}\simeq 0.577$. In this paper, we use a different approach partly inspired by parametric geometry of numbers and show that $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge an$ for each $n\ge 2$, with $a=1/(2-\log 2)\simeq 0.765$.
