Abstract:Comparison to traditionally accurate computing, approximate computing focuses on the rapidity of the satisfactory solution, but not the unnecessary accuracy of the solution. Approximate bisimularity is the approximate one corresponding to traditionally accurate bisimilarity. Based on the work of distances between basic processes, we propose an algebraic approach for distances between processes to support a whole process calculus CCS, which contains prefix, sum, composition, restriction, relabeling and recursion.

The structure of approximate lattices in linear groups

Abstract:Approximate lattices are aperiodic generalisations of lattices of locally compact groups that were first studied in seminal work of Yves Meyer. They are defined as those uniformly discrete approximate subgroups (symmetric subsets stable under multiplication up to a finite error) of locally compact groups that have finite co-volume. Meyer showed that approximate lattices of Euclidean spaces (a.k.a. Meyer sets) are related to lattices in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces via the cut-and-project construction. A fundamental challenge of the theory of approximate lattices is to extend Meyer's theorem beyond Euclidean spaces. Our main result provides a complete structure theorem for approximate lattices valid in all linear algebraic groups over local fields and their finite products, in particular providing the most general extension of Meyer's theorem to date. Our proof relies on an extension of a theorem of Lubotzky--Mozes--Raghunathan to approximate lattices in S-adic semi-simple groups, a notion of cohomology tailored to the study of approximate subgroups, a universality statement complementing a recent result of Hrushovski and a generalisation of a result of Burger and Monod about bounded cohomology of lattices.

Abstract:\emph{Approximation Theory} uses nicely-behaved subcategories to understand entire categories, just as projective modules are used to approximate arbitrary modules in classical homological algebra. We use set-theoretic \emph{elementary submodel arguments} to give new, short proofs of well-known theorems in approximation theory, sometimes with stronger results.

Abstract:We introduce rough approximations into basic algebras. After investigating elementary properties of the upper (lower) approximations in basic algebras and discussing the convexity of these two approximations in linearly ordered basic algebras, we generalize related results for MV-algebras, lattice ordered effect algebras, and orthomodular lattices to basic algebras. We also study the relationship between upper (lower) rough ideals of basic algebras and upper (lower) approximations of their homomorphic images.

Abstract:Rough set theory is an important technique for knowledge discovery in databases, and its algebraic structure is part of the foundation of rough set theory. In this paper, we present the structures of the lower and upper approximations based on arbitrary binary relations. Some existing results concerning the interpretation of belief functions in rough set backgrounds are also extended. Based on the concepts of definable sets in rough set theory, two important Boolean subalgebras in the generalized rough sets are investigated. An algorithm to compute atoms for these two Boolean algebras is presented.
Approximate lattices and S-adic linear groups

Abstract:We provide and motivate in this paper a natural framework for the study of approximate lattices. Namely, we consider approximate lattices in so-called $S$-adic linear groups and define relevant notions of arithmeticity. We also adapt to this framework classical results of the theory of lattices and Meyer sets. Results from this paper will play a role in the proof of a structure theorem for approximate lattices in $S$-adic linear groups which is the subject of a companion paper. We extend a theorem of Schreiber's concerning the coarse structure of approximate subgroups in Euclidean spaces to approximate subgroups of unipotent $S$-adic groups. We generalise Meyer's structure theorem for approximate lattices in locally compact abelian groups to a precise structure theorem for approximate lattices in unipotent $S$-adic groups. Finally, we study intersections of approximate lattices of $S$-adic linear groups with certain subgroups such as the nilpotent radical and Levi subgroups. We furthermore show that the framework of $S$-adic linear groups enables us to provide statements more precise than earlier results.

Abstract:Description of the pairs 〈low approximation, upper approximation〉 of rough sets is an important aspect in the research of rough set theory by algebraic method. By defining some basic operators on the approximation pairs, rough algebras can be constructed. Then some general algebras can be selected to describe the pairs of rough sets. The most famous rough algebras are Rough Double Stone Algebra, Rough Nelson Algebra and Approximation Space Algebra, and their corresponding general algebra structures are regular double Stone algebra, semi-simple Nelson algebra and pre-rough algebra respectively. This paper establishes the relations between the operators of these rough algebras and proves that: (a) approximation space algebra can be made into semi-simple Nelson algebra or regular double Stone algebra; (b) rough Nelson algebra can be made into pre-rough algebra or regular double Stone algebra; (c) rough double Stone algebra can be made into pre-rough algebra or semi-simple Nelson algebra. Thus, a uniform structure for the famous works from three different aspects is built and the relations among them are established.

Abstract:We investigate properties of closed approximate subgroups of locally compact groups, with a particular interest for approximate lattices i.e. those approximate subgroups that are discrete and have finite co-volume. We prove an approximate subgroup version of Cartan's closed-subgroup theorem and study some applications. We give a structure theorem for closed approximate subgroups of amenable groups in the spirit of the Breuillard--Green--Tao theorem. We then prove two results concerning approximate lattices: we extend to amenable groups a structure theorem for mathematical quasi-crystals due to Meyer; we prove results concerning intersections of radicals of Lie groups and discrete approximate subgroups generalising theorems due to Auslander, Bieberbach and Mostow. As an underlying theme, we exploit the notion of good models of approximate subgroups that stems from the work of Hrushovski, and Breuillard, Green and Tao. We show how one can draw information about a given approximate subgroup from a good model, when it exists.

Abstract:The Pythagoras number of a sum of squares is the shortest length among its sums of squares representations. In many algebras, for example real polynomial algebras in two or more variables, there exists no upper bound on the Pythagoras number for all sums of squares. In this paper, we study how Pythagoras numbers in $*$-algebras over $\mathbb{C}$ behave with respect to small perturbations of elements. More precisely, the approximate Pythagoras number of an element is the smallest Pythagoras number among all elements in its $\varepsilon$-ball. We show that these approximate Pythagoras numbers are often significantly smaller than their exact versions, and allow for (almost) dimension-independent upper bounds. Our results use low-rank approximations for Gram matrices of sums of squares and estimates for the operator norm of the Gram map.

Abstract:We study approximate equivalence relations up to commensurability, in the presence of a definable measure. As a basic framework, we give a presentation of probability logic based on continuous logic. Hoover's normal form is valid here; if one begins with a discrete logic structure, it reduces arbitrary formulas of probability logic to correlations between quantifier-free formulas. We completely classify binary correlations in terms of the Kim-Pillay space, leading to strong results on the interpretative power of pure probability logic over a binary language. Assuming higher amalgamation of independent types, we prove a higher stationarity statement for such correlations. We also give a short model-theoretic proof of a categoricity theorem for continuous logic structures with a measure of full support, generalizing theorems of Gromov-Vershik and Keisler, and often providing a canonical model for a complete pure probability logic theory. These results also apply to local probability logic, providing in particular a canonical model for a local pure probability logic theory with a unique 1-type and geodesic metric. For sequences of approximate equivalence relations with an 'approximately unique' probability logic 1-type, we obtain a structure theorem generalizing the `Lie model' theorem for approximate subgroups. The models here are Riemannian homogeneous spaces, fibered over a locally finite graph. Specializing to definable graphs over finite fields, we show that after a finite partition, a definable binary relation converges in finitely many self-compositions to an equivalence relation of geometric origin. For NIP theories, pursuing a question of Pillay's, we prove an archimedean finite-dimensionality statement for the automorphism groups of definable measures, acting on a given type of definable sets.

Abstract:Many important computational structures involve an intricate interplay between algebraic features (given by operations on the underlying set) and relational features (taking account of notions such as order or distance). This paper investigates algebras over relational structures axiomatized by an infinitary Horn theory, which subsume, for example, partial algebras, various incarnations of ordered algebras, quantitative algebras introduced by Mardare, Panangaden, and Plotkin, and their recent extension to generalized metric spaces and lifted algebraic signatures by Mio, Sarkis, and Vignudelli. To this end, we develop the notion of clustered equation, which is inspired by Mardare et al.'s basic conditional equations in the theory of quantitative algebras, at the level of generality of arbitrary relational structures, and we prove that it is equivalent to an abstract categorical form of equation earlier introduced by Milius and Urbat. Our main results are a family of Birkhoff-type variety theorems (classifying the expressive power of clustered equations) and an exactness theorem (classifying abstract equations by a congruence property).

Abstract:We describe the structure of ``K-approximate subgroups'' of torsion-free nilpotent groups, paying particular attention to Lie groups. Three other works, by Fisher-Katz-Peng, Sanders and Tao, have appeared which independently address related issues. We comment briefly on some of the connections between these papers.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an overview of some recent work on applying tools from category theory in finite model theory, descriptive complexity, constraint satisfaction, and combinatorics. The motivations for this work come from Computer Science, but there may also be something of interest for model theorists and other logicians. The basic setting involves studying the category of relational structures via a resource-indexed family of adjunctions with some process category - which unfolds relational structures into treelike forms, allowing natural resource parameters to be assigned to these unfoldings. One basic instance of this scheme allows us to recover, in a purely structural, syntax-free way: the Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse~game; the quantifier rank fragments of first-order logic; the equivalences on structures induced by (i) the quantifier rank fragments, (ii) the restriction of this fragment to the existential positive part, and (iii) the extension with counting quantifiers; and the combinatorial parameter of tree-depth (Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez). Another instance recovers the k-pebble game, the finite-variable fragments, the corresponding equivalences, and the combinatorial parameter of treewidth. Other instances cover modal, guarded and hybrid fragments, generalized quantifiers, and a wide range of combinatorial parameters. This whole scheme has been axiomatized in a very general setting, of arboreal categories and arboreal covers. Beyond this basic level, a landscape is beginning to emerge, in which structural features of the resource categories, adjunctions and comonads are reflected in degrees of logical and computational tractability of the corresponding languages. Examples include semantic characterisation and preservation theorems, and Lovasz-type results on counting homomorphisms.

Abstract:Given a bounded-above cochain complex of modules over a ring, it is standard to replace it by a projective resolution, and it is classical that doing so can be very useful. Recently, a modified version of this was introduced in triangulated categories other than the derived category of a ring. A triangulated category is approximable if this modified procedure is possible. Not surprisingly this has proved a powerful tool. For example: the fact that the derived category of a quasi compact, separated scheme is approximable has led to major improvements on old theorems due to Bondal, Van den Bergh and Rouquier. In this article we prove that, under weak hypotheses, the recollement of two approximable triangulated categories is approximable. In particular, this shows many of the triangulated categories that arise in noncommutative algebraic geometry are approximable. Furthermore, the lemmas and techniques developed in this article form a powerful toolbox which has interesting applications in existing and forthcoming work by the authors.
