Abstract:In this paper (Part I of a series of three papers) an axiomatic formulation of GR is given, here use is made of the concept of pre-radar charts. These charts have "infinitesimally" the same properties as the true radar charts used in space-time theory. Their existence in GR has far-reaching consequences which are discussed throughout the papers. For the sake of simplicity and convenience I consider only such material systems the state of which is defined by a velocity field, a mass density and a temperature field. But the main results hold also for more complex systems. It follows from the axiomatics that the pre-radar charts define an atlas for the space-time manifold and that, in addition, they generate the metric, the velocity field and the displacement of the matter. Therefore, they are called generating functions. They act like "potentials". At the end of the paper it is shown that the existence of pre-radar charts allows to simplify the original axiomatics drasticly. But the two versions of GR are equivalent.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and $A$ be a unital simple C*-algebra with tracial rank zero. It has been shown that two unital monomorphisms $\phi, \psi: C\to A$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if $$ [\phi]=[\psi] {\rm in} KL(C,A) and \tau\circ \phi=\tau\circ \psi \tforal \tau\in T(A), $$ where $T(A)$ is the tracial state space of $A.$ In this paper we prove the following: Given $\kappa\in KL(C,A)$ with $\kappa(K_0(C)_+\setminus \{0\})\subset K_0(A)_+\setminus \{0\}$ and with $\kappa([1_C])=[1_A]$ and a continuous affine map $\lambda: T(A)\to T_{\mathtt{f}}(C)$ which is compatible with $\kappa,$ where $T_{\mathtt{f}}(C)$ is the convex set of all faithful tracial states, there exists a unital monomorphism $\phi: C\to A$ such that $$ [\phi]=\kappa\andeqn \tau\circ \phi(c)=\lambda(\tau)(c) $$ for all $c\in C_{s.a.}$ and $\tau\in T(A).$ Denote by ${\rm Mon}_{au}^e(C,A)$ the set of approximate unitary equivalence classes of unital monomorphisms. We provide a bijective map $$ \Lambda: {\rm Mon}_{au}^e (C,A)\to KLT(C,A)^{++}, $$ where $KLT(C,A)^{++}$ is the set of compatible pairs of elements in $KL(C,A)^{++}$ and continuous affine maps from $T(A)$ to $T_{\mathtt{f}}(C).$ Moreover, we realized that there are compact metric spaces $X$, unital simple AF-algebras $A$ and $\kappa\in KL(C(X), A)$ with $\kappa(K_0(C(X))_+\setminus\{0\})\subset K_0(A)_+\setminus \{0\}$ for which there is no \hm $h: C(X)\to A$ so that $[h]=\kappa.$

Flows on uniform Roe algebras

Abstract:For a uniformly locally finite metric space $(X, d)$, we investigate \emph{coarse} flows on its uniform Roe algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$, defined as one-parameter groups of automorphisms whose differentiable elements include all partial isometries arising from partial translations on $X$. We first show that any flow $\sigma$ on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ corresponds to a (possibly unbounded) self-adjoint operator $h$ on $\ell_2(X)$ such that $\sigma_t(a) = e^{ith} a e^{-ith}$ for all $t \in \mathbb{R}$, allowing us to focus on operators $h$ that generate flows on $ \mathrm{C}^*_u (X)$. Assuming Yu's property A, we prove that a self-adjoint operator $h$ on $\ell_2(X)$ induces a coarse flow on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ if and only if $h$ can be expressed as $h = a + d$, where $a \in \mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $d$ is a diagonal operator with entries forming a coarse function on $X$. We further study cocycle equivalence and cocycle perturbations of coarse flows, showing that, under property A, any coarse flow is a cocycle perturbation of a diagonal flow. Finally, for self-adjoint operators $h$ and $k$ that induce coarse flows on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$, we characterize conditions under which the associated flows are either cocycle perturbations of each other or cocycle conjugate. In particular, if $h - k$ is bounded, then the flow induced by $h$ is a cocycle perturbation of the flow induced by $k$.

Abstract:We present methods to construct flows with varying sets of KMS infinity states on a given simple unital AF-algebra. It follows, for example, that for any pair D and E of non-empty compact metric spaces there is a flow on the CAR algebra whose set of KMS infinity states is homeomorphic to D while the set of KMS infinity states for the inverted flow is homeomorphic to E. Remarkably the flows that realize all such pairs D and E can be chosen to have isomorphic KMS bundles.

Abstract:Leveraging techniques from the literature on geometric numerical integration, we propose a new general method to compute exact expressions for the BCH formula. In its utmost generality, the method consists in embedding the Lie algebra of interest into a subalgebra of the algebra of vector fields on some manifold by means of an isomorphism, so that the BCH formula for two elements of the original algebra can be recovered from the composition of the flows of the corresponding vector fields. For this reason we call our method the flow method. Clearly, this method has great advantage in cases where the flows can be computed analytically. We illustrate its usefulness on some benchmark examples where it can be applied directly, and discuss some possible extensions for cases where an exact expression cannot be obtained.

A Complete Invariant for Flow Equivalence

Abstract:Minimal flow spaces of dimension 1 are among the most fundamental limit sets in dynamical systems. Here we establish a complete invariant for the flow equivalence of such objects. The invariant takes values in a category of `positive trope' equivalence classes of inverse sequences of free groups and positive maps, or alternatively within a certain category of symbolic systems. Moreover, every such symbolic system is realised by a flow space, and we thus have a one to one correspondence between flow equivalence classes of minimal flow spaces and positive trope classes of such systems. At the same time, this provides a complete invariant both for flow equivalence of minimal Z-Cantor dynamical systems and for what we call the germinal equivalence of minimal Z-Cantor dynamical systems. Our work thus greatly extends that of Barge and Diamond on their complete invariant of primitive substitution tilings, and provides counterpoint to the work of Giordano, Putnam and Skau on orbit equivalence of Z-Cantor systems.

Flow views and infinite interval exchange transformations for recognizable substitutions

Abstract:A flow view is the graph of a measurable conjugacy $\Phi$ between a substitution or S-adic subshift $(\Sigma,\sigma, \mu)$ and an exchange of infinitely many intervals in $([0,1], F, m)$, where $m$ is Lebesgue measure. A natural refining sequence of partitions of $\Sigma$ is transferred to $([0,1],m)$ using a canonical addressing scheme, a fixed dual substitution, and a shift-invariant probability measure $\mu$. On the flow view, $T \in \Sigma$ is shown horizontally at a height of $\Phi(T)$ using colored unit intervals to represent the letters. The infinite interval exchange transformation $F$ is well approximated by exchanges of finitely many intervals, making numeric and graphic methods possible. We prove that in certain cases a choice of dual substitution guarantees that $F$ is self-similar. We discuss why the spectral type of $\Phi \in L^2(\Sigma, \mu),$ is of particular interest. As an example of utility, some spectral results for constant-length substitutions are included.

Finite dimensional approximations in operator algebras

Abstract:A non-self-adjoint operator algebra is said to be residually finite dimensional (RFD) if it embeds into a product of matrix algebras. We characterize RFD operator algebras in terms of their matrix state space, and moreover show that an operator algebra is RFD if and only if every representation can be approximated by finite dimensional ones in the point weak operator topology. This is a non-self-adjoint version of a theorem of Exel and Loring for $C^*$-algebras. Moreover, we construct an example of an operator algebra for which approximation in the point strong operator topology is not possible. As a consequence, the maximal $C^*$-algebra generated by this operator algebra is not RFD. This answers questions of Clouâtre and Ramsey and of Clouâtre and Dor-On.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $\alpha\in Aut(A)$ be an automorphism. A necessary condition for $A\rtimes_{\alpha}\Z$ being embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra is the existence of a faithful tracial state. If in addition, there is an automorphism $\kappa$ with $\kappa_{*1}=-{\rm id}_{K_1(A)}$ such that $\alpha\circ \kappa$ and $\kappa\circ \af$ are asymptotically unitarily equivalent, then $A\rtimes_{\af}\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra. Consequently, in the case that $A$ is a unital AH-algebra (not necessarily simple) with torsion $K_1(A),$ $A\rtimes_{\alpha}\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra if and only if $A$ admits a faithful $\alpha$-invariant tracial state. We also show that if $A$ is a unital A$\T$-algebra then $A\rtimes_{\alpha}\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra if and only if $A$ admits a faithful $\af$-invariant tracial state. If $X$ is a compact metric space and $\Lambda: \Z^2\to Aut(C(X))$ is a \hm then $C(X)\rtimes_{\Lambda}\Z^2$ can be asymptotically embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra provided that $X$ admits a strictly positive $\Lambda$-invariant probability measure. Consequently $C(X)\rtimes_{\Lambda}\Z^2$ is quasidiagonal if $X$ admits a strictly positive $\Lambda$-invariant Borel probability measure.

Abstract:A map of a metric space into itself has the approximate fixed point property (AFPP for short) if every nearly fixed point is close to some fixed point. It is proven that both linear operators acting on finite-dimensional Banach spaces and uniformly expansive linear homeomorphisms on Banach spaces exhibit the AFPP. Furthermore, an illustration is provided of a linear homeomorphism that does not satisfy the AFPP.

Abstract:We show that for every countable group, any sequence of approximate homomorphisms with values in permutations can be realized as the restriction of a sofic approximation of an orbit equivalence relation. Moreover, this orbit equivalence relation is uniquely determined by the invariant random subgroup of the approximate homomorphisms. We record applications of this result to recover various known stability and conjugacy characterizations for almost homomorphisms of amenable groups.

Abstract:We consider the problem of approximation of a continuous function $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ by elements from a sum of two algebras. We prove a de la Vallée Poussin type theorem, which estimates the approximation error $E(f)$ from below. We also obtain a duality formula for the precise computation of $E(f)$.
