Abstract:We show that every quasi-compact and quasi-separated algebraic stack can be approximated by a noetherian algebraic stack. We give several applications such as eliminating noetherian hypotheses in the theory of good moduli spaces.

Abstract:With the long-term goal of proving local structure theorems of algebraic stacks in positive characteristic near points with reductive (but possibly non-linearly reductive) stabilizer, we conjecture that quotient stacks of the form $[\mathrm{Spec}\, A/G]$, with $G$ reductive and $A^G$ complete local, are coherently complete along the unique closed point. We establish this conjecture in two interesting cases: (1) $A^G$ is artinian and (2) $G$ acts trivially on $\mathrm{Spec}\, A$. We also establish coherent completeness results for graded unipotent group actions. In order to establish these results, we prove a number of foundational statements concerning cohomological and completeness properties of algebraic stacks -- including on how these properties ascend and descend along morphisms.

Abstract:We generalize Illusie's definition of the Atiyah class to complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology on arbitrary algebraic stacks. We show that this gives a global obstruction theory for moduli stacks of complexes in algebraic geometry without derived methods. We give a similar generalization of the reduced Atiyah class, and we show various useful properties for working with Atiyah classes, such as compatibilities between the reduced and ordinary Atiyah class, and compatibility with tensor products and determinants.

Abstract:We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for when an algebraic stack admits a good moduli space and prove a semistable reduction theorem for points of algebraic stacks equipped with a $\Theta$-stratification. These results provide a generalization of the Keel--Mori theorem to moduli problems whose objects have positive dimensional automorphism groups and give criteria on the moduli problem to have a separated or proper good moduli space. To illustrate our method, we apply these results to construct proper moduli spaces parameterizing semistable $\mathcal{G}$-bundles on curves and moduli spaces for objects in abelian categories.

Abstract:We develop a theory of perfect algebraic stacks that extend our theory of perfect algebraic spaces in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.07672" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.07672">arXiv:2303.07672</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.08502" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.08502">arXiv:2303.08502</a> to the setting of algebraic stacks. We prove several desired properties of perfect algebraic stacks. This extends some previous results of perfect schemes and perfect algebraic spaces, including the recent one developed by Bertapelle et al. in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1611.02060" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.02060">arXiv:1611.02060</a>. Moreover, our theory extends the previous one developed by Xinwen Zhu in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1707.05700" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1707.05700">arXiv:1707.05700</a>. Our method to define perfect algebraic stacks differs from all previous approaches, as we utilize representability of algebraic spaces. There is a natural notion of algebraic Frobenius morphisms of algebraic stacks. The algebraic Frobenius morphism provides one with an explicit description of the perfection of an algebraic stack. This gives rise to the perfection functor on algebraic stacks, which enables us to pass between the usual and the perfect world.

Abstract:We extend the notion of algebraic stack to an arbitrary subcanonical site C. If the topology on C is local on the target and satisfies descent for morphisms, we show that algebraic stacks are precisely those which are weakly equivalent to representable presheaves of groupoids whose domain map is a cover. This leads naturally to a definition of algebraic n-stacks. We also compare different sites naturally associated to a stack.

Abstract:We generalize a construction of Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler-Gabber-Kaup in the setting of complex varieties to the setting of finite type, complex algebraic stacks. Given two such stacks $\mathcal{X},\mathcal{Y}$ with affine stabilizers, and a morphism between them, we construct a morphism from the pullback of the intersection complex of $\mathcal{Y}$ to the intersection complex of $\mathcal{X}$. As an application, we show that the Borel-Moore fundamental class of a closed substack $\mathcal{Z}$ in a Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathcal{X}$ lifts to a class in the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal{X}$.

Cohomological integrality for symmetric quotient stacks

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the sheafified version of the cohomological integrality conjecture for stacks obtained as a quotient of a smooth affine symmetric algebraic variety by a reductive algebraic group equipped with an invariant function. A crucial step is the definition of the BPS sheaf as a complex of monodromic mixed Hodge modules. We prove the purity of the BPS sheaf when the situation arises from a smooth affine weakly symplectic algebraic variety with a weak moment map. This situation gives local models for 1-Artin derived stacks with self-dual cotangent complex. We then apply these results to prove a conjecture of Halpern-Leistner predicting the purity of the Borel-Moore homology of $0$-shifted symplectic stacks (or more generally, derived stacks with self-dual cotangent complex) having a proper good moduli space. One striking application is the purity of the Borel--Moore homology of the moduli stack of principal Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve for a reductive group.

Abstract:Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.

Abstract:We use techniques of Alper-Hall-Rydh to prove a local structure theorem for smooth morphisms between smooth stacks around points with linearly reductive stabilizers. This implies that the good moduli space of a smooth stack over a base has equisingular fibers. As an application, we show that any two fibres have isomorphic $\ell$-adic cohomology rings and intersection cohomology groups. If we work over the complex numbers, we show that the family is topologically locally trivial on the base, and that the intersection cohomology groups of the fibers fit into a polarizable variation of pure Hodge structures. We apply these results to derive some consequences for the moduli spaces of $G$-bundles on smooth projective curves, and for the moduli spaces of sheaves on "negatively polarized" surfaces and on del Pezzo Gorenstein surfaces for nongeneric stability parameters.

Abstract:We prove a generalized vanishing theorem for certain quasi-coherent sheaves along the derived blow-ups of quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks. We give four applications of the generalized vanishing theorem: we prove a $K$-theoretic version of the generalized vanishing theorem which verified a conjecture of the author and give a new proof of the $K$-theoretic virtual localization theorem for quasi-smooth derived schemes through the intrinsic blow-up theory of Kiem-Li-Savvas; we prove a desingularization theorem for quasi-smooth derived schemes and give an approximation formula for the virtual fundamental classes; we give a resolution of the diagonal along the projection map of blow-ups of smooth varieties, which strengthens the semi-orthogonal decomposition theorem of Orlov; we illustrate the relation between the generalized vanishing theorem and weak categorifications of quantum loop and toroidal algebra actions on the derived category of Nakajima quiver varieties. We also propose several conjectures related to birational geometry and the $L_{\infty}$-algebroid of Calaque-Căldăraru-Tu.

Abstract:Base on a conjecture, we prove that for any smooth separated stack of finite type over a number field, its descent obstruction equals its iterated descent obstruction. As a consequence, we show that for any algebraic stack over a number field that has a finite etale covering of a smooth geometrically integral variety, its descent obstruction equals its iterated descent obstruction.

Abstract:Huayi Chen introduces the notion of an approximable graded algebra, which he uses to prove a Fujita-type theorem in the arithmetic setting, and asked if any such algebra is the graded ring of a big line bundle on a projective variety. This was proved to be false in a previous paper of the author's, who subsequently proved that any such algebra is associated to an infinite Weil divisor. In this paper, we show that over the complex numbers, this infinite Weil divisor necessarily has finite cohomology class.

Abstract:We show that various natural algebro-geometric moduli stacks, including the stack of curves, have the property that every Deligne-Mumford gerbe over a field appears as the residual gerbe of one of their points. These gerbes are universal obstructions for objects of the stack to be defined over their fields of moduli, and for the corresponding coarse moduli space to be fine. Thus, our results show that many natural moduli stacks hold objects that are obstructed from being defined over their fields of moduli in every possible way, and have coarse spaces which fail to be fine moduli spaces in every possible way. A basic insight enabling our arguments is that many classical constructions in equivariant projective geometry generalize to the setting of relative geometry over an arbitrary Deligne-Mumford gerbe over a field.

Abstract:For an abelian tensor category a stack is constructed. As an application we show that our construction can be used to recover a quasi-compact separated scheme from the category of its quasi-coherent sheaves. In another application, we show how the "dual stack" of the classifying stack $BG$ of a finite group $G$ can be obtained by altering the tensor product on the category $\rep{G}$ of $G$-representations. Using glueing techniques we show that the dual pair of a $G$-gerbe, in the sense of [TT10], can be constructed by glueing local dual stacks.

Abstract:The representability theorem for stacks, due to Artin in the underived setting and Lurie in the derived setting, gives conditions under which a stack is representable by an $n$-geometric stack. In recent work of Ben-Bassat, Kelly, and Kremnizer, a new theory of derived analytic geometry has been proposed as geometry relative to the $(\infty,1)$-category of simplicial commutative Ind-Banach $R$-modules, for $R$ a Banach ring. In this paper, we prove a representability theorem which holds in a very general context, which we call a representability context, encompassing both the derived algebraic geometry context of Toën and Vezzosi and these new derived analytic geometry contexts. The representability theorem gives natural and easily verifiable conditions for checking that derived stacks in these contexts are $n$-geometric, such as having an $n$-geometric truncation, being nilcomplete, and having an obstruction theory. Future work will explore representability of certain moduli stacks arising in derived analytic geometry, for example moduli stacks of Galois representations.

Abstract:We construct the étale motivic Borel-Moore homology of derived Artin stacks. Using a derived version of the intrinsic normal cone, we construct fundamental classes of quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks and demonstrate functoriality, base change, excess intersection, and Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas. These classes also satisfy a general cohomological Bézout theorem which holds without any transversity hypotheses. The construction is new even for classical stacks and as one application we extend Gabber's proof of the absolute purity conjecture to Artin stacks.

Abstract:Given $\mathfrak{F}$ a coherent sheaf on a Noetherian integral algebraic stack $\mathfrak{P}$, we give two constructions of stacks $\widetilde{\mathfrak{P}}$, equipped with birational morphisms $p:\widetilde{\mathfrak{P}}\to \mathfrak{P}$ such that $p^*\mathfrak{F}$ is simpler: in the Rossi construction, the torsion free part of $p^*\mathfrak{F}$ is locally free; in the Hu--Li diagonalization construction, $p^*\mathfrak{F}$ is a union of locally free sheaves. We use these constructions to define reduced Gromov--Witten invariants of a large class of GIT quotients in all genera.
