There are three different kinds of rational numbers according to the parity of the numerator and denominator, say odd/odd, even/odd, and odd/even rational numbers. We study algorithms to find best approximations by rational numbers of given parities and compare these algorithms with continued fraction expansions.

Abstract:Rational best approximations (in a Chebyshev sense) to real functions are characterized by an equioscillating approximation error. Similar results do not hold true for rational best approximations to complex functions in general. In the present work, we consider unitary rational approximations to the exponential function on the imaginary axis, which map the imaginary axis to the unit circle. In the class of unitary rational functions, best approximations are shown to exist, to be uniquely characterized by equioscillation of a phase error, and to possess a super-linear convergence rate. Furthermore, the best approximations have full degree (i.e., non-degenerate), achieve their maximum approximation error at points of equioscillation, and interpolate at intermediate points. Asymptotic properties of poles, interpolation nodes, and equioscillation points of these approximants are studied. Three algorithms, which are found very effective to compute unitary rational approximations including candidates for best approximations, are sketched briefly. Some consequences to numerical time-integration are discussed. In particular, time propagators based on unitary best approximants are unitary, symmetric and A-stable.

Abstract:We classify and enumerate all rational numbers with approximation constant at least $\frac{1}{3}$ using hyperbolic geometry. Rational numbers correspond to geodesics in the modular torus with both ends in the cusp, and the approximation constant measures how far they stay out of the cusp neighborhood in between. Compared to the original approach, the geometric point of view eliminates the need to discuss the intricate symbolic dynamics of continued fraction representations, and it clarifies the distinction between the two types of worst approximable rationals: (1) There is a plane forest of Markov fractions whose denominators are Markov numbers. They correspond to simple geodesics in the modular torus with both ends in the cusp. (2) For each Markov fraction, there are two infinite sequences of companions, which correspond to non-simple geodesics with both ends in the cusp that do not intersect a pair of disjoint simple geodesics, one with both ends in the cusp and one closed.

Abstract:Computations on a computer with a floating point arithmetic are always approximate. Conversely, computations with the rational arithmetic (in a computer algebra system, for example) are always absolutely exact and reproducible both on other computers and (theoretically) by hand. Consequently, these computations can be demonstrative in a sense that a proof obtained with their help is no different from a traditional one (computer assisted proof). However, usually such computations are impossible in a sufficiently complicated problem due to limitations on resources of memory and time. We propose a mechanism of rounding off rational numbers in computations with rational arithmetic, which solves this problem (of resources), i.e., computations can still be demonstrative but do not require unbounded resources. We give some examples of implementation of standard numerical algorithms with this arithmetic. The results have applications to analytical number theory.

Abstract:A method of constructing the best rational approximation function is proposed based on rational approximation theory for fractional order differential and integral operators in s domain. The idea, method, and algorithm of constructing the best rational approximation function are discussed in detail. The best rational approximation function constructed for fractional integral operator is tested and verified by using best rational approximation definition and characteristic theorem. The verification results show that the proposed method is efficient, and the best rational approximation function constructed can achieve the best approximation performance with the lowest order for a given approximation error and an interested frequency band.
On 'Best' Rational Approximations to $\pi$ and $\pi+e$

Abstract:Through the half-unit circle area computation using the integration of the corresponding curve power series representation, we deduce a slow converging positive infinite series to $\pi$. However, by studying the remainder of that series we establish sufficiently close inequalities with equivalent lower and upper bound terms allowing us to estimate, more precisely, how the series approaches $\pi$. We use the obtained inequalities to compute up to four-digit denominator, what are in this sense, the best rational numbers that can replace $\pi$. It turns out that the well-known convergents of the continued fraction of $\pi$, $22/7$ and $355/113$ called, respectively, Yuel\"{u} and Mil\"{u} in China are the only ones found. Thus we apply a similar process to find rational estimations to $\pi+e$ where $e$ is taken as the power series of the exponential function evaluated at $1$. For rational numbers with denominators less than $2000$, the convergent $920/157$ of the continued fraction of $\pi+e$ turns out to be the only rational number of this type.

Abstract:Several construction methods for rational approximations to functions of one real variable are described in the present paper; the computational results that characterize the comparative accuracy of these methods are presented; an effect of error autocorrection is considered. This effect occurs in efficient methods of rational approximation (e.g., Pade approximations, linear and nonlinear Pade-Chebyshev approximations) where very significant errors in the coefficients do not affect the accuracy of the approximation. The matter of import is that the errors in the numerator and the denominator of a fractional rational approximant compensate each other. This effect is related to the fact that the errors in the coefficients of a rational approximant are not distributed in an arbitrary way but form the coefficients of a new approximant to the approximated function. Understanding of the error autocorrection mechanism allows to decrease this error by varying the approximation procedure depending on the form of the approximant. Some applications are described in the paper. In particular, a method of implementation of basic calculations on decimal computers that uses the technique of rational approximations is described in the Appendix. To a considerable extent the paper is a survey and the exposition is as elementary as possible.

Abstract:Numerical approximate computation can solve large and complex problems fast. It has the advantage of high efficiency. However it only gives approximate results, whereas we need exact results in many fields. There is a gap between approximate computation and exact results. A bridge overriding the gap was built by Zhang, in which an exact rational number is recovered from its approximation by continued fraction method when the error is less than $1/((2N+2)(N-1)N)$, where $N$ is a bound on absolute value of denominator of the rational number. In this paper, an improved algorithm is presented by which a exact rational number is recovered when the error is less than $1/(4(N-1)N)$.

Rational function approximation with normalized positive denominators

Abstract:Rational function approximations provide a simple but flexible alternative to polynomial approximation, allowing one to capture complex non-linearities without oscillatory artifacts. However, there have been few attempts to use rational functions on noisy data due to the likelihood of creating spurious singularities. To avoid the creation of singularities, we use Bernstein polynomials and appropriate conditions on their coefficients to force the denominator to be strictly positive. While this reduces the range of rational polynomials that can be expressed, it keeps all the benefits of rational functions while maintaining the robustness of polynomial approximation in noisy data scenarios. Our numerical experiments on noisy data show that existing rational approximation methods continually produce spurious poles inside the approximation domain. This contrasts our method, which cannot create poles in the approximation domain and provides better fits than a polynomial approximation and even penalized splines on functions with multiple variables. Moreover, guaranteeing pole-free in an interval is critical for estimating non-constant coefficients when numerically solving differential equations using spectral methods. This provides a compact representation of the original differential equation, allowing numeric solvers to achieve high accuracy quickly, as seen in our experiments.

Abstract:Computing rational minimax approximations can be very challenging when there are singularities on or near the interval of approximation - precisely the case where rational functions outperform polynomials by a landslide. We show that far more robust algorithms than previously available can be developed by making use of rational barycentric representations whose support points are chosen in an adaptive fashion as the approximant is computed. Three variants of this barycentric strategy are all shown to be powerful: (1) a classical Remez algorithm, (2) a "AAA-Lawson" method of iteratively reweighted least-squares, and (3) a differential correction algorithm. Our preferred combination, implemented in the Chebfun MINIMAX code, is to use (2) in an initial phase and then switch to (1) for generically quadratic convergence. By such methods we can calculate approximations up to type (80, 80) of $|x|$ on $[-1, 1]$ in standard 16-digit floating point arithmetic, a problem for which Varga, Ruttan, and Carpenter required 200-digit extended precision.
