Abstract:Let $E_{kk}^{(n)}$ denote the minimax (i.e., best supremum norm) error in approximation of $x^n$ on $[\kern .3pt 0,1]$ by rational functions of type $(k,k)$ with $k<n$. We show that in an appropriate limit $E_{kk}^{(n)} \sim 2\kern .3pt H^{k+1/2}$ independently of $n$, where $H \approx 1/9.28903$ is Halphen's constant. This is the same formula as for minimax approximation of $e^x$ on $(-\infty,0\kern .3pt]$.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Rational function approximations of the special function $e^{x}E_{1}(x)$ and applications to irrationality of Euler-Gompertz constant $δ$

Abstract:In \cite{d4}, we gave a method to construct a continued fraction of the function $F(x):=e^{x}E_{1}(x)$. More precisely we define $F_{1}(x)$ as the reciprocal of $F(x)$ and we inductively define $F_{m}(x)$ as the reciprocal of ``$F_{m-1}(x)$ minus the main term of $F_{m-1}(x)$ at infinity''. We calculated the main term of $F_{m}(x)$ at infinity by using \cite[Proposition 2.1]{d4}. This method is analogous to the regular continued fraction expansion of real numbers. \\ \ \ \ \ In this paper we prove that the continued fraction converges to $F(x)$ for any positive real number $x>0$ by following the proof of that the regular continued fraction of a positive and irrational real number $\alpha$ converges to $\alpha$. Essentially we prove inequalities for $Q_{m}(x)$ (in Theorem 4.1) and inequalities $F_{m}(x)>0$ (in Section 5). In particular, we prove stronger inequalities $\displaystyle\frac{P_{2k}(x)}{Q_{2k}(x)}<F(x)<\displaystyle\frac{P_{2k-1}(x)}{Q_{2k-1}(x)}$ (than $F_{m}(x)>0$) and give two proofs of these. In Section 6, we show an asymptotic relation between $Q_{2k}(x)$ and $Q_{2k-1}(x)$ by using properties of the classical Laguerre polynomial. In Section 7, we consider Euler-Gompertz constant $\delta$. As far as we know, irrationality of $\delta$ is still an open problem. We construct a sequence of rationals $\displaystyle\frac{A_{i}}{B_{i}}\ (i=1,2,3,\cdots)$ such that $\delta B_{i}-A_{i}$ approaches 0 as $i$ approaches infinity and give a sufficient condition of that $\delta B_{i}-A_{i}\neq 0$ for any positive integer $i$. Therefore, if it is proved that this condition holds, it completes a proof of irrationality of Euler-Gompertz constant $\delta$.

In this paper, applying Dirichlet's approximation theorem to certain algebraic numbers$\;\theta,$ e.g.$\;\theta=\sqrt[n]{d},d\in N,n\geq 3,d>0;$ $\;\theta^{3}+b_{1}\theta-b_{0}=0,b_{0}>0;$ $\;\theta^{4}+b_{2}\theta^{2}-b_{0}=0,\;b_{0}>0.$ We proved that there exists a effective constant$\;C=C(\theta)$ such that$\;|p-q\theta|>Cq^{-1}$ for all$\;p/q.$ Our theorem shows their sequence of partial quotients can not be unbounded.

Abstract:Computing rational minimax approximations can be very challenging when there are singularities on or near the interval of approximation - precisely the case where rational functions outperform polynomials by a landslide. We show that far more robust algorithms than previously available can be developed by making use of rational barycentric representations whose support points are chosen in an adaptive fashion as the approximant is computed. Three variants of this barycentric strategy are all shown to be powerful: (1) a classical Remez algorithm, (2) a "AAA-Lawson" method of iteratively reweighted least-squares, and (3) a differential correction algorithm. Our preferred combination, implemented in the Chebfun MINIMAX code, is to use (2) in an initial phase and then switch to (1) for generically quadratic convergence. By such methods we can calculate approximations up to type (80, 80) of $|x|$ on $[-1, 1]$ in standard 16-digit floating point arithmetic, a problem for which Varga, Ruttan, and Carpenter required 200-digit extended precision.

Abstract:Power series representations for special functions are computationally satisfactory only in the vicinity of the expansion point. Thus, it is an obvious idea to use instead Padé approximants or other rational functions constructed from sequence transformations. However, neither Padé approximants nor sequence transformation utilize the information which is avaliable in the case of a special function -- all power series coefficients as well as the truncation errors are explicitly known -- in an optimal way. Thus, alternative rational approximants, which can profit from additional information of that kind, would be desirable. It is shown that in this way a rational approximant for the digamma function can be constructed which possesses a transformation error given by an explicitly known series expansion.

Abstract:We present a hypergeometric construction of rational approximations to $\zeta(2)$ and $\zeta(3)$ which allows one to demonstrate simultaneously the irrationality of each of the zeta values, as well as to estimate from below certain linear forms in 1, $\zeta(2)$ and $\zeta(3)$ with rational coefficients. A new notion of (simultaneous) diophantine exponent is introduced to formalise the arithmetic structure of these specific linear forms. Finally, the properties of this newer concept are studied and linked to the classical irrationality exponent and its generalisations given recently by S. Fischler.

Abstract:This paper uses W. M. Schmidt's idea formulated in 1967 to generalise the classical theory of Diophantine approximation to subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Given two subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$ $A$ and $B$ of respective dimensions $d$ and $e$ with $d+e\leqslant n$, the proximity between $A$ and $B$ is measured by $t=\min(d,e)$ canonical angles $0\leqslant \theta_1\leqslant \cdots\leqslant \theta_t\leqslant \pi/2$; we set $\psi_j(A,B)=\sin\theta_j$. If $B$ is a rational subspace, his complexity is measured by its height $H(B)=\mathrm{covol}(B\cap\mathbb{Z}^n)$. We denote by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_j$ the exponent of approximation defined as the upper bound (possibly equal to $+\infty$) of the set of $\beta>0$ such that for infinitely many rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$, the inequality $\psi_j(A,B)\leqslant H(B)^{-\beta}$ holds. We are interested in the minimal value $\mathring{\mu}_n(d\vert e)_j$ taken by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_j$ when $A$ ranges through the set of subspaces of dimension $d$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that for all rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$ one has $\dim(A\cap B)<j$. We show that if $A$ is included in a rational subspace $F$ of dimension $k$, its exponent in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the same as its exponent in $\mathbb{R}^k$ via a rational isomorphism $F\to\mathbb{R}^k$. This allows us to deduce new upper bounds for $\mathring{\mu}_n(d\vert e)_j$. We also study the values taken by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_e$ when $A$ is a subspace of $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfying $\dim(A\cap B)<e$ for all rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$.

Abstract:We shall present effective approximations measures for certain infinite products related to $q$-exponential function. There are two main targets. First we shall prove an explicit irrationality measure result for the values of $q$-exponential function at rational points. Then, if we restrict the approximations to rational numbers of the shape $d^s/N$, we may replace Bundschuh's irrationality exponent $7/3$ by $2+\frac{1}{3+2\sqrt 3}=2.1547...$.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of the classical Dedekind sums $s(s_k/t_k)$ for the sequence of convergents $s_k/t_k$ $k\ge 0$, of the transcendental number \BD \sum_{j=0}^\infty\frac {1}{b^{2^j}},\ b\ge 3. \ED In particular, we show that there are infinitely many open intervals of constant length such that the sequence $s(s_k/t_k)$ has infinitely many transcendental cluster points in each interval.
