Abstract:We prove that any positive rational number is the sum of distinct unit fractions with denominators in . The same conclusion holds for the set for any , provided a necessary congruence condition is satisfied. We also prove that this is true for any subset of the primes of relative positive density, provided a necessary congruence condition is satisfied.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of the classical Dedekind sums $s(s_k/t_k)$ for the sequence of convergents $s_k/t_k$ $k\ge 0$, of the transcendental number \BD \sum_{j=0}^\infty\frac {1}{b^{2^j}},\ b\ge 3. \ED In particular, we show that there are infinitely many open intervals of constant length such that the sequence $s(s_k/t_k)$ has infinitely many transcendental cluster points in each interval.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Fourier-Dedekind Sums and an Extension of Rademacher Reciprocity

Abstract:Fourier-Dedekind sums are a generalization of Dedekind sums - important number-theoretical objects that arise in many areas of mathematics, including lattice point enumeration, signature defects of manifolds and pseudo random number generators. A remarkable feature of Fourier-Dedekind sums is that they satisfy a reciprocity law called Rademacher reciprocity. In this paper, we study several aspects of Fourier-Dedekind sums: properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums, extensions of the reciprocity law, average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, and finally, extrema of 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. On properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums we show that a general Fourier-Dedekind sum is simultaneously a convolution of simpler Fourier-Dedekind sums, and a linear combination of these with integer coefficients. We show that Fourier-Dedekind sums can be extended naturally to a group under convolution. We introduce "Reduced Fourier-Dedekind sums", which encapsulate the complexity of a Fourier-Dedekind sum, describe these in terms of generating functions, and give a geometric interpretation. Next, by finding interrelations among Fourier-Dedekind sums, we extend the range on which Rademacher reciprocity Theorem holds. We go on to study the average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, showing that the average behavior of a Fourier-Dedekind sum is described concisely by a lower-dimensional, simpler Fourier-Dedekind sum. Finally, we focus our study on 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. We find tight upper and lower bounds on these for a fixed $t$, estimates on the argmax and argmin, and bounds on the sum of their "reciprocals".

Abstract:The Diophantine sums $\sum_{n=1}^N \| n \alpha \|^{-1}$ and $\sum_{n=1}^N n^{-1} \| n \alpha \|^{-1}$ appear in many different areas including the ergodic theory of circle rotations, lattice point counting and random walks, often in connection with Fourier analytic methods. Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani gave estimates for these and related sums in terms of the Diophantine approximation properties of $\alpha$ that are sharp up to a constant factor. In the present paper, we remove the constant factor gap between the upper and the lower estimates, and thus find the precise asymptotics for a wide class of irrationals. Our methods apply to sums with the fractional part instead of the distance from the nearest integer function, and to sums involving shifts $\| n \alpha + \beta \|$ as well. We also comment on a higher dimensional generalization of these sums.

Abstract:Let $n,d$, and $k$ be positive integers where $n$ and $d$ are coprime. Our two main results are Theorem 1. There is a partition of the infinite interval $[kd,\infty)$ of positive integers into a family of finite sets $X$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $X$ is $n/d$. Theorem 1. There is a partition of $[2kd,\infty)$ into an infinite family of infinite sets $Y$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $Y$ is $n/d$. Our method is grounded in the Vital Identity, $1/z = 1/(z+1) + 1/z(z+1)$, which holds for every complex number $z \notin \{-1,0\}$, and which gives rise to an eponymous algorithm that serves as our tool. At the core of our Theorems 1 and 2 is the number theoretic function $\star: x\mapsto \star x := x(x+1)$ into whose properties this paper continues an investigation initiated in [7].

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Analytical expressions are derived for the number of fractions with equal numerators in the Farey sequence of order $n$, $F_n$, and in the truncated Farey sequence $F_n^{1/k}$ containing all Farey fractions below $1/k$, with $1\leq k \leq n$. These developments lead to an expression for the rank of $1/k$ in $F_n$, or equivalently $\left|F_n^{1/k}\right|$, and to remarkable relations between the ranks of different unit fractions. Furthermore, the results are extended to Farey fractions of the form $2/k$.

Abstract:Dedekind sums are arithmetic sums that were first introduced by Dedekind in the context of elliptic functions and modular forms, and later recognized to be surprisingly ubiquitous. Among the variations and generalizations introduced since, there is a construction of Dedekind sums for lattices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{R}). Building upon work of Asai, we prove the reciprocity law for these Dedekind sums, based on a concrete realization of the Euler class. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula expressing Dedekind sums for Hecke triangle groups in terms of continued fractions.

Abstract:What is the maximum number of $r$-term sums admitting rational values in $n$-element sets of irrational numbers? We determine the maximum when $r<4$ or $r\geq n/2$ and also in case when we drop the condition on the number of summands. It turns out that the $r$-term sum problem is equivalent to determine the maximum number of $r$-term zero-sum subsequences in $n$-element sequences of integers, which can be seen as a variant of the famous Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem.

Abstract:Assume that $\alpha>1$ is an algebraic number and $\xi\neq0$ is a real number. We are concerned with the distribution of the fractional parts of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})$. Under various Diophantine conditions on $\xi$ and $\alpha$, we obtain lower bounds on the number $n$ with $1\leq n\leq N $ for which the fractional part of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})_{n\geq1}$ fall into a prescribed region $I\subset [0,1]$, extending several results in the literature. As an application, we show that the Fourier decay rate of some self-similar measures is logarithmic, generalizing a result of Varjú and Yu.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of the fractional finite sums theory. We present the classes of functions for which it is possible to characterize the constant related to the derivative of fractional sums (denominated by essence of a function). Examples of the essences of functions are presented, including the Bernoulli numbers, which are obtained as essences of the functions $f(x)=x^a$, $a \in \mathbb{N}^*$. Based on the new results, we can expand the comprehension of the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula for a real number instead of only considering natural numbers. Moreover, we utilize the concept of the essence of a function to propose a new regularization method for divergent series.

Let $r_{\frak{b, d}}(\lambda)$ denote the number of representations of a given $\lambda\in\mathbb{R}$ by sums $\sum_{k\ge 0}\delta_kb_k$ with $\delta_k$ in ${\frak d}$. We establish upper bounds and asymptotic formulas for $r_{\frak{b,d}}(\lambda)$ and its arbitrary moments, respectively. We prove that the associated zeta function $\zeta_{\frak{b, d}}(s):=\sum_{\lambda>0}r_{\frak{b, d}}(\lambda)\lambda^{-s}$ can be meromorphically continued to the entire complex plane when $b_k=\beta^{k}$, and to the half-plane $\Re(s)>\log_\beta |\frak{d}|-\gamma$ when $b_k=\beta^{k}+O(\beta^{(1-\gamma)k})$, with any fixed $\gamma\in(0,1]$, respectively. We also determine the possible poles, compute the residues at the poles, and locate the trivial zeros of $\zeta_{\frak{b, d}}(s)$ in the regions where it can be extended.
