Abstract:Finite trigonometric sums occur in various branches of physics, mathematics, and their applications. These sums may contain various powers of one or more trigonometric functions. Sums with one trigonometric function are known, however sums with products of trigonometric functions can get complicated and may not have a simple expressions in a number of cases. Some of these sums have interesting properties and can have amazingly simple value. However, only some of them are available in literature. We obtain a number of such sums using method of residues.

Abstract:Zhao (2003a) first established a congruence for any odd prime p>3, S(1,1,1;p)≡−2Bp−3 (mod p), which holds when p=3 evidently. In this paper, we consider finite triple harmonic sum S(α,β,γ,p) (mod p) is considered for all positive integers α,β,γ. We refer to w=α+β+γ as the weight of the sum, and show that if w is even, S(α,β,γ,p)≡0 (mod p) for p≥w+3; if w is odd S(α,γ,γ,p)≡rBp−w (mod p) for p≥w, here r is an explicit rational number independent of p. A congruence of Catalan number is obtained as a special case.
On a finite sum of cosecants appearing in various problems

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the finite sum of cosecants $\sum\csc\big(\varphi+a\pi l/n\big),$ where the index $l$ runs through 1 to $n-1$ and $\varphi$ and $a$ are arbitrary parameters, as well as several closely related sums, such as similar sums of a series of secants, of tangents and of cotangents. These trigonometric sums appear in various problems in mathematics, physics, and a variety of related disciplines. Their particular cases were fragmentarily considered in previous works, and it was noted that even a simple particular case $\sum\csc\big(\pi l/n\big)$ does not have a closed-form, i.e. a compact summation formula. In the paper, we derive several alternative representations for the above-mentioned sums, study their properties, relate them to many other finite and infinite sums, obtain their complete asymptotic expansions for large $n$ and provide accurate upper and lower bounds (e.g. the typical relative error for the upper bound is lesser than $2\times10^{-9}$ for $n\geqslant10$ and lesser than $7\times10^{-14}$ for $n\geqslant50$, which is much better than the bounds we could find in previous works). Our researches reveal that these sums are deeply related to several special numbers and functions, especially to the digamma function (furthermore, as a by-product, we obtain several interesting summations formulae for the digamma function). Asymptotical studies show that these sums may have qualitatively different behaviour depending on the choice of $\varphi$ and $a$; in particular, as $n$ increases some of them may become sporadically large. Finally, we also provide several historical remarks related to various sums considered in the paper. We show that some results in the field either were rediscovered several times or can easily be deduced from various known formulae, including some formulae dating back to the XVIIIth century.

Evaluations and relations for finite trigonometric sums

Abstract:Several methods are used to evaluate finite trigonometric sums. In each case, either the sum had not previously been evaluated, or it had been evaluated, but only by analytic means, e.g., by complex analysis or modular transformation formulas. We establish both reciprocity and three sum relations for trigonometric sums. Motivated by certain sums that we have evaluated, we add coprime conditions to the summands and thereby define analogues of Ramanujan sums, which we in turn evaluate. One of these analogues leads to a criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis, analogous to the Franel-Landau criterion.

Dedekind sums: a combinatorial-geometric viewpoint

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

On sums of primes and triangular numbers

Abstract:We study whether sufficiently large integers can be written in the form cp+T_x, where p is either zero or a prime congruent to r mod d, and T_x=x(x+1)/2 is a triangular number. We also investigate whether there are infinitely many positive integers not of the form (2^ap-r)/m+T_x with p a prime and x an integer. Besides two theorems, the paper also contains several conjectures together with related analysis and numerical data. One of our conjectures states that each natural number not equal to 216 can be written in the form p+T_x with x an integer and p a prime or zero; another conjecture asserts that any odd integer n>3 can be written in the form p+x(x+1) with p a prime and x a positive integer.

Abstract:Through a unified and relatively simple approach which uses complex contour integrals, particularly convenient integration contours and calculus of residues, closed-form summation formulas for 12 very general families of trigonometric sums are deduced. One of them is a family of cosecant sums which was first summed in closed form in a series of papers by Dowker (1987 Phys. Rev. D 36 3095-101; 1989 J. Math. Phys. 30 770-3; 1992 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 25 2641-8), whose method has inspired our work in this area. All of the formulas derived here involve the higher-order Bernoulli polynomials.This article is part of a special issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical in honour of Stuart Dowker's 75th birthday devoted to 'Applications of zeta functions and other spectral functions in mathematics and physics'.
Fourier-Dedekind Sums and an Extension of Rademacher Reciprocity

Abstract:Fourier-Dedekind sums are a generalization of Dedekind sums - important number-theoretical objects that arise in many areas of mathematics, including lattice point enumeration, signature defects of manifolds and pseudo random number generators. A remarkable feature of Fourier-Dedekind sums is that they satisfy a reciprocity law called Rademacher reciprocity. In this paper, we study several aspects of Fourier-Dedekind sums: properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums, extensions of the reciprocity law, average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, and finally, extrema of 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. On properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums we show that a general Fourier-Dedekind sum is simultaneously a convolution of simpler Fourier-Dedekind sums, and a linear combination of these with integer coefficients. We show that Fourier-Dedekind sums can be extended naturally to a group under convolution. We introduce "Reduced Fourier-Dedekind sums", which encapsulate the complexity of a Fourier-Dedekind sum, describe these in terms of generating functions, and give a geometric interpretation. Next, by finding interrelations among Fourier-Dedekind sums, we extend the range on which Rademacher reciprocity Theorem holds. We go on to study the average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, showing that the average behavior of a Fourier-Dedekind sum is described concisely by a lower-dimensional, simpler Fourier-Dedekind sum. Finally, we focus our study on 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. We find tight upper and lower bounds on these for a fixed $t$, estimates on the argmax and argmin, and bounds on the sum of their "reciprocals".

Abstract:By using trigonometric and generating functions, some formulas and relations involving sums of powers of consecutive positive integers and certain combinatorial sums are derived. By applying the derivative operator to some certain families of special functions and finite sums involving trigonometric functions, many novel relations related to the special numbers and polynomials are obtained. Moreover, by applying p-adic integrals to these finite sums, some p-adic integral representations of trigonometric functions are found.

Abstract:Dedekind sums are arithmetic sums that were first introduced by Dedekind in the context of elliptic functions and modular forms, and later recognized to be surprisingly ubiquitous. Among the variations and generalizations introduced since, there is a construction of Dedekind sums for lattices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{R}). Building upon work of Asai, we prove the reciprocity law for these Dedekind sums, based on a concrete realization of the Euler class. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula expressing Dedekind sums for Hecke triangle groups in terms of continued fractions.

Abstract:Finite sums of powers of cosecants appear in a wide range of physical problems. We, through a unified approach which uses contour integrals and residues, establish the summation formulas for two general families of such sums. One of them is the family which was first studied and summed in closed form by Dowker [Phys. Rev. D 36, 3095 (1987)], while the other is related to it and has not been studied before. Our summation formulas of the Dowker sums involve only the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the (ordinary) Bernoulli polynomials and numbers, unlike the earlier summation formulas in which either the higher-order Bernoulli numbers and polynomials or the multiple sums involving the Bernoulli numbers and their products, were used. A great deal of other (known or presumably new) closed-form summations follows as straightforward corollaries to these formulas. Among them are two special cases of the celebrated Verlinde’s formula and numerous sums encountered in various physical problems by McCoy and Orrick [J. Stat. Phys. 83, 839 (1996)], Gervois and Mehta [J. Math. Phys. 36, 5098 (1995)], and Henkel and Lacki [Phys. Lett. A 138, 105 (1989)].

Abstract:A generalized central trinomial coefficient T_n(b,c) is the coefficient of x^n in the expansion of (x^2+bx+c)^n with b,c∈ℤ. In this paper we investigate congruences and series for sums of terms related to central binomial coefficients and generalized central trinomial coefficients. The paper contains many conjectures on congruences related to representations of primes by certain binary quadratic forms, and 62 proposed new series for 1/π motivated by congruences and related dualities.

Abstract:In this paper we study the finite trigonometric sum $\sum a_l\csc\big(\pi l/n\big)$, where $a_l$ are equal to $\cos(2\pi l \nu/n)$ and where the summation index $l$ and the discrete parameter $\nu$ both run through $1$ to $n-1$. This sum is a generalization of Watson's trigonometric sum, which has been extensively studied in a series of previous papers, and also may be regarded as the so-called Dowker sum of order one half. It occurs in various problems in mathematics, physics and engineering, and plays an important role in some number-theoretic problems. In the paper, we obtain several integral and series representations for the above-mentioned sum, investigate its properties, derive various, including asymptotic, expansions for it, and deduce very accurate upper and lower bounds for it (both bounds are asymptotically vanishing). In addition, we obtain two relatively simple approximate formulae containing only several terms, which are also very accurate and can be particularly appreciated in applications. Finally, we also derive several advanced summation formulae for the digamma functions, which relate the gamma and the digamma functions, the investigated sum, as well as the product of a sequence of cosecants $\prod\big(\csc(\pi l/n)\big)^{\csc(\pi l/n)}$
