Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Every positive integer $l \in \mathbb{N}$ can be formed $l = (m + n)d$, provided $gcd(m,n)=1$. From this point of view, the next formulas $n=\sum_{d|l} \varphi(d)$ and $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}=\sum_{k=1}^{n} \varphi(k)[\frac{n}{k}]$, and these equivalence had been proved. In this paper on an extension of these results, the next identity is proved: $\sum_{k=1}^{n} \sum_{\substack{(a+b)c=k \\ gcd(a,b)=1}} f(a,b)\cdot g(c) = \sum_{k=1}^{n} \sum_{\substack{a+b=k \\ gcd(a,b)=1}} f(a,b) \sum_{i\leq [\frac{n}{k}]} g(i) = \sum_{a+b \leq n} f(\frac{a}{gcd(a,b)},\frac{b}{gcd(a,b)})\cdot g(gcd(a,b))$. Abstract:In 1997 K. Ono and K. Soundararajan [Invent. Math. 130(1997)] proved that under the generalized Riemann hypothesis any positive odd integer greater than 2719 can be represented by the famous Ramanujan form x(2) + y(2) + 10z(2); equivalently the form 2x(2) + 5y(2) + 4T(z) represents all integers greater than 1359, where T(z) denotes the triangular number z(z + 1)/2. Given positive integers a, b, c we employ modular forms and the theory of quadratic forms to determine completely when the general form ax(2) + by(2) + cT(z) represents sufficiently large integers and to establish similar results for the forms ax(2) + bT(y) + cT(z) and aT(x) + bT(y) + cT(z). Here are some consequences of our main theorems: (i) All sufficiently large odd numbers have the form 2ax(2) + y(2) + z(2) if and only if all prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo (ii) The form ax(2) + y(2) + T(z) is almost universal (i.e., it represents sufficiently large integers) if and only if each odd prime divisor of a is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8. (iii) ax(2) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4. (iv) When v(2)(a) not equal 3, the form aT(x) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4 and v(2)(a) not equal 5, 7,..., where v(2)(a) is the 2-adic order of a.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the equations involving Euler's totient function $\phi$ and Lucas type sequences. In particular, we prove that the equation $\phi (x^m-y^m)=x^n-y^n$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a+1, a, 1, 1)$, where $a$ is a positive integer, and the equation $\phi ((x^m-y^m)/(x-y))=(x^n-y^n)/(x-y)$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a, b, 1, 1)$, where $a, b$ are integers with $a>b\ge 1$.

Abstract:For any positive integer n, the famous pseudo Smarandache function Z(n) is defined as the smallest positive integer m such that n | m(m+1)/2. The number theory function D(n) is defined as the smallest positive integer m such that n divides d(1)d(2)…d(m), where d(n) is the Dirichlet divisor function. The main purpose of this paper is using the elementary method and the properties of the pseudo Smarandache function Z(n) and number theory function D(n) to study the solvability of the equation 2Z(n) = D(n), and obtain its all positive integer solutions.

Abstract: We pose many conjectures involving primes and quadratic forms, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer, there is an integer k=0,...,n such that n+k and n+k^2 are both prime. (ii) Any integer n>11 can be written as p+q with p, p+6, 6q-1 and 6q+1 all prime. (iii) For each n=6,7,... there is a prime p<n such that 6n-p and 6n+p are both prime. (iv) Any integer n>3 can be written as p+q, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, and q is either prime or practical. Also, every even number n>8 can be written as p+q+r, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, q is a prime with q-1 and q+1 both practical, and r is a practical number with r-1 and r+1 both prime. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as $m/n$, where $m$ and $n$ are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or with $\pi(m)\pi(n)$ a positive square, or with $\varphi(m)$ and $\sigma(n)$ both squares).

Abstract:A few years ago Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko introduced an interesting quantization of the real numbers as certain power series in a quantization parameter $q.$ It is known now that the golden ratio has minimal radius among all these series. We study the rational numbers having maximal radius of convergence equal to 1, which we call Kronecker fractions. We prove that the corresponding continued fraction expansions must be palindromic and describe all Kronecker fractions with prime denominators. We found several infinite families of Kronecker fractions and all Kronecker fractions with denominator less than 2000. We also comment on the irrational case and on the relation with braids, rational knots and links.

In this note, we prove an analogue of the above Ramanujan's identity in the functions fields setting, which involves the Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers.

Abstract: Let $m$ be any positive integer, and let $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $m^2$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w$ nonnegative integers such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $x+2y+3z\in\{2^a:\ a=1,2,3,\ldots\}$.

Abstract:Let $h_n(v)$ be the sequence of rational functions with $$ \frac{h_n(v)}{v}-nh_n(v)+(n-1)h_{n-1}(v)-vh_{n-1}'(v)+\frac{v(v(vh_{n-1}(v))')'}{4}=0 $$ for $n>0$ and $h_0(v)=1$. We prove that $h_n(v)$ has a pole at $v=\frac{1}{n}$ if and only if $n$ is a sum of two squares of integers. Moreover, if $r_2(n)=\#\{(a,b)\in \mathbb Z^2: a^2+b^2=n\}$, then we derive the formula $$ \underset{v=1/n}{\mathrm{Res}}h_n(v)=\frac{(-1)^{n-1}r_2(n)}{n16^n}. $$ The results are then generalized to arbitrary modular forms with respect to $\Gamma(2)$ and as a consequence we obtain a new criterion for Lehmer's conjecture for Ramanujan's $\tau$-function.

Arithmetic on $q$-deformed rational numbers

Abstract:Recently, Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko introduced a $q$-analog of rational numbers. More precisely, for an irreducible fraction $\frac{r}s>0$, they constructed coprime polynomials ${\mathcal R}_{\frac{r}s}(q), {\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q) \in {\mathbb Z}[q]$ with ${\mathcal R}_{\frac{r}s}(1)=r, {\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(1)=s$. Their theory has a rich background and many applications. By definition, if $r \equiv r' \pmod{s}$, then ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q)={\mathcal S}_{\frac{r'}s}(q)$. We show that $rr'=-1 \pmod{s}$ implies ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q)={\mathcal S}_{\frac{r'}s}(q)$, and it is conjectured that the converse holds if $s$ is prime (and $r \not \equiv r' \pmod{s}$). We also show that $s$ is a multiple of 3 (resp. 4) if and only if ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(\zeta)=0$ for $\zeta=(-1+\sqrt{-3})/2$ (resp. $\zeta=i$). We give applications to the representation theory of quivers of type $A$ and the Jones polynomials of rational links.

Abstract:In this note, we use integral binary cubic forms to study the rational cube sum problem. We prove (unconditionally) that for any positive integer $d$, infinitely many primes in each of the residue classes $ 1 \pmod {9d}$ as well as $ -1 \pmod {9d}$, are sums of two rational cubes. Among other results, we prove that every non-zero residue class $a \pmod {q}$, for any prime $q$, contains infinitely many primes which are sums of two rational cubes. Further, for an arbitrary integer $N$, we show there are infinitely many primes $p$ in each of the residue classes $ 8 \pmod 9$ and $1 \pmod 9$, such that $Np$ is a sum of two rational cubes.

Abstract:Let a and m>0 be integers. We show that for any integer b relatively prime to m, the set {a^n+bn: n=1,…,m^2} contains a complete system of residues modulo m. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer n>1 can be written as k+m with 2^k+m prime, where k and m are positive integers.

Abstract:In this paper we study [nr]m = Σk≡r(mod m) (nk) where m > 0, n ≥ 0 and r are integers. We show that [nr]m (m > 2) can be expressed in terms of some linearly recurrent sequences with orders not exceeding φ⋊(m)/2. In particular, we determine [nr]12 explicitly in terms of first order and second order recurrences. It follows that for any prime p > 3 we have 2p - 1-1/p≡2(-1)(p-1)/2Σ1≤k≤(p+1)/6(-1) k/2k - 1 (mod p) and Σ0<k<p/23k/k≡Σ0<k<p/6 (-1)k/k (mod p).

Abstract:Let $\phi$ denote the Euler totient function, defined by $id*\mu$ where $\mu$ is the M\"{o}bius function. We shall consider the $k$-th Riesz mean of the arithmetical function $n/\phi(n)$ for any positive integer $k \geq 2$ on the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis. Our result is a refinement of Theorem 2 in A. Sankaranarayanan and S.K. Singh [6]. We also improve it upon the assumption of the Gonek-Hejhal Hypothesis.

Abstract:Let $m$ be a positive integer, and define $$\zeta_m(s)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}{n^s} \zeta^*_m(s)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\Omega(n)}}{n^s},$$ for $\Re(s)>1$, where $\omega(n)$ denotes the number of distinct prime factors of $n$, and $\Omega(n)$ represents the total number of prime factors of $n$ (counted with multiplicity). In this paper we study these two zeta functions and related arithmetical functions. We show that $$\sum^\infty_{n=1\atop n \text{is squarefree}}\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}n=0\quad\text{if} m>4,$$ which is similar to the known identity $\sum_{n=1}^\infty\mu(n)/n=0$ equivalent to the Prime Number Theorem. For $m>4$, we prove that $$\zeta_m(1):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}n=0 \text{and} \zeta^*_m(1):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\Omega(n)}}n=0.$$ We also raise a hypothesis on the parities of $\Omega(n)-n$ which implies the Riemann Hypothesis.
Two trees enumerating the positive rationals

Abstract:We give two trees allowing to represent all positive rational numbers. These trees can be seen as ternary and quinary analogues of the Calkin-Wilf tree. For each of these two trees, we give recurrence formulas allowing to compute the rational number corresponding to the node n. These are analogues of the formulas given by Donald Knuth and Moshe Newman for the Calkin-Wilf tree. Finally, we show that the two sequences we have obtained, together with Calkin-Wilf sequence, are the only ones which satisfy a relation analogue to Newman's relation and enumerate the positive rationals.
