Abstract:This paper describes physical measures for quantifying the quality of light sources and their characteristics. Typical light sources, including incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes, are first introduced and their performance is compared. The CIE colour specification system is then described, including physical quantities for specifying light sources such as colour temperature, spectral power distribution, luminance, illuminance, luminous efficacy, chromaticity coordinates, uniform colour spaces, a colour difference formula and a colour appearance model. Finally, the CIE colour rendering index, together with recent developments towards a new index, including CRI‐CAM02UCS, is described.
Measurement of Led Spatial Intensity Distribution Using Imaging

Abstract:This paper, through studying of LED luminescence properties, presents a fast measurement method and device of LED sources spatial intensity distribution. This method is based on planar imaging, and it has significant merits of fast, easy operated, informative and real–time. The basic structure is LED luminous energy converges on image space through optical lens of a certain numerical aperture(NA). In image space, the energy on the defocused plane is collected with the imaging detector. Then, calculating energy distribution on object virtual plane from that on the image space defocused plane through imaging relationship. Thus, each point of the LED luminous intensity distribution on object virtual plane can be calculated. Tracepro simulation software is used to simulate energy distribution of the model, and the corresponding data analysis shows that planar imaging can accurately reflect the distribution of the LED light. This method has practical meanings for luminous flux measurement of some LEDs.
A Luminance-Based Lighting Design Method: A Framework for Lighting Design and Review of Luminance Measures

Abstract:Imaging photometers and ray-tracing software packages have made it possible to capture and model high-resolution and accurate luminance maps. However, luminance map measurement is rarely seen in professional practice, despite its ability to evaluate visual parameters accurately and directly, such as contrast, visual, size, and target brightness. Two barriers to the uptake of luminance measurement and associated design measures include (1) lack of knowledge of the range of measures available, and (2) difficulty in assessing whether a luminance-based lighting design method is a sufficient and justifiable replacement for the current illuminance-based practice. This paper reviews current practice and presents alternative luminance design measures and human needs for lighting to construct a framework for designing and comparing lighting design methods. It concludes by presenting a new luminance-based lighting method in the context of this framework to show that it is more accurate and comprehensive than current practice and can be enabled by emerging low-cost and increasingly accessible luminance measurement technologies. The overall outcomes provide the metrics and framework to bring more complete and effective luminance-based lighting design into practice.

Abstract:Light-emitting diode (LED) is regarded as the green lighting source in 21st century due to its advantages of high efficiency,energy saving,environmental protection and compact size,etc.With the popularization and application of LED in more and more lighting occasions and the improvement of people's requirement for the quality of light source,more and more attention has been paid to the light quality of LED.The main indexes for evaluating the light quality of LED are the efficiency,angular color uniformity (ACU) and color rendering index (CRI),which are closely related to LED packaging.LED packaging is a process of assembling the chip and other packaging materials together to form the final lighting products,it plays a key role in mechanical protection,external signals and electrical connections,heat dissipation and light quality control.This paper makes a systematic exposition of the control technology of efficiency,ACU and CRI from the view of LED packaging,mainly involves three key packaging technologies:1) thermal management.For LED products,about 60％ of the input electrical power is converted to heat,therefore,the failure of the effectively heat dissipation would cause sharply increase of the temperature,which leads to the decrease of efficiency and induces reliability problems.2) Optical design.The LED light is generate by the electron-hole recombination from the active layer of the chip,then it across the chip,phosphor layer,encapsulant layer,lens and other packaging materials.Due to scattering,refraction and absorption of the packaging materials,the light propagation direction and path would be changed,and part of the light is absorbed and converted into heat.Therefore,the optical design not only can control the LED light energy distribution,but also can reduce the light absorption in the packaging materials to improve the efficiency.3) Phosphor coating.Compared to the multi-color LED chips packaging method,coating the monochromatic or polychromatic fluorescent powder on the LED chip to achieve white light is more popular and widely applied in the LED industrial due to its correlated color temperature (CCT) adjustability and process flexibility.For the phosphor-converted white LED,the phosphor coating plays a key role in deciding the ACU and CRI.

Status of Solid-State Lighting Based on Entries to the 2010 Us Doe Next Generation Luminaire Competition

Abstract:This paper analyzes the performance of 138 LED luminaires comprised of 95 indoor and 43 outdoor, all of which were within the judging phase of the 2010 U. S. Department of Energy Next Generation Luminaire (TM) (NGL) competition. The analyses focus on three areas derived from LM-79 and LM-80 test reports that were supplied by the manufacturers: energy efficiency, color, and long-term performance. Indoor recessed downlights and street lighting luminaires had the most entries. All luminaires employed phosphor-converted LED (PC-LED) packages or remote phosphor technology, reflecting the fact that these technologies now have better performance than color-mixed light emitting diodes (LEDs) for white-light applications. Comparisons of luminaire efficacy and luminous efficacy of radiation (LER) were made among the NGL 2010 submissions, luminaires with conventional light sources, and the expected performance of LED luminaires in the near future. 0-10V and reverse-phase control were the prominent dimming methods among the luminaires studied. High correlation (r = 0.98) was found between the CIE color rendering index (CRI) and NIST's Color Quality Scale (CQS). Compared to the luminaires recognized in 2009, a better balance was achieved between efficacy and CRI in 2010. The need to standardize the methods for evaluating LED products is discussed, including dimming performance, color-shift, long-term performance, and luminaire rated life. In person evaluation and mock-ups are recommended prior to specifying LED products.

Abstract:Currently, built LED luminaires are usually multi-source. This causes a large number of photometric and simulation problems connected with computer lighting visualization. This paper highlights three key issues with these luminaires: a change in the traditional understanding of the coordinate system for these luminaires, the photometric test distance of these luminaires and the need for the photometric separation of a single LED in the computer lighting simulation process. An optical model of a linear LED luminaire used in floodlighting was formulated on this basis. The presented conclusions refer to practical applications. Thus, it is necessary to address the crucial points that specify the coordinate system for the multi-source LED luminaire by its designer and present the information in a datasheet. The other important points concern determining the appropriate photometric test distance for the multi-source LED luminaires of a given type and creating photometric files for the different distances in the operation of the luminaire. Taking the above ideas into account will lead to an improvement in the quality and accuracy of lighting measurements and simulations.

Abstract:An optimization method is proposed for designing an LED freeform lens which produces a uniform circular pattern with high energy efficiency. The results of design examples show that the irradiance distribution is well controlled with excellent uniformity and energy efficiency. This optimization method can be generalized to design freeform lenses with different lighting patterns or without rotational symmetry.

Abstract:White light emitting diodes (wLEDs) have been widely used as the green lighting sources. The commercial wLEDs devices are mainly achieved through the combination of blue emission chips and yellow phosphors, which offer advantages of high efficiency and long lifetime. However, the color rendering index (CRI) of traditional wLEDs is low due to the lack of red components. In recent years, with the improvement of the quality of life, a lot of efforts have been paid to improve the performance of wLEDs devices related to CRI, correlated color temperature, light uniformity, luminous flux, etc. In this article, we summarize the recent advances on the optimization of wLEDs toward healthy lighting. Brief introductions on the fundamentals of healthy effect of lighting are presented, followed by discussions of current methods to realize wLEDs devices. Special overviews on strategies for luminescent materials of wLEDs in recent years are presented. The opportunities and challenges in the future development of wLEDs lighting devices are also discussed.
Numerical correlation between non-visual metrics and brightness metrics-implications for the evaluation of indoor white lighting systems in the photopic range

Abstract:From the beginning of the [Formula: see text] century until today, the demand for lighting systems includes not only visual parameters (brightness, contrast perception, color quality), but also non-visual parameters. It is necessary to define the new non-visual parameters for the realization of the new concept of Human Centric Lighting (HCL) or Integrative Lighting. As a contribution to this approach, many international research groups have tried to quantify the non-visual parameters such as Circadian Stimulus by Rea et. al. in USA ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]), Melanopic Equivalent Daylight ([Formula: see text]) illuminance, mEDI of the CIE S 026/E:2018 or the latest formula by Giménez et al., for the nocturnal melatonin suppression. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between these non-visual metrics and brightness metrics such as the equivalent luminance of Fotios et al., or the latest brightness model of TU Darmstadt so that scientists, lighting engineers and lighting system users can correctly apply them in their work. In this context, this paper attempts to investigate and analyze these correlations between the three metric groups based on the database of 884 light sources of different light source technologies and daylight spectra. The obtained results show that the latest Circadian Stimulus model of Rea et. al. [Formula: see text] with the improvement of Circadian Light [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) has solved the disadvantage of [Formula: see text], especially for the interrupted point between warm and cold white (about [Formula: see text]) or the junction between negative and positive signal of the opponent channel ([Formula: see text]). Moreover, these three metrics of the three research groups contain a high correlation coefficient, so that one metric can be transformed by linear functions to the other two parameters.

Abstract:Light is one of the important aspects for a comfortable office environment. Too often high quality lighting is not achieved. Lighting quality can be defined by different aspects that are relevant such as the quantity, distribution, glare, spectral power distribution, daylight, directionality, and dynamics of light.The luminance distribution seems to be a suitable measure to achieve high quality lighting. The luminance distribution can be measured, with a practical accuracy, by commercially available cameras and fisheye lenses. All these aspects spectral power distribution can be measured using a camera-based luminance distribution measurement device. So, a luminance distribution measurement device is an excellent tool to measure or indicate lighting quality. It can be used to achieve a better understanding of lighting quality and potentially it can be implemented in automated building control systems.
Redefining artificial lighting through spectral engineering of light sources for well-being

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have revolutionized artificial lighting, but also exposed the detrimental health effects that stem from insufficient exposure to natural light. Human-centric artificial lighting requires both visual quality and circadian lighting performance that mimics daylight's evolving spectral power distribution (SPD). Here, we present a color-tunable LED-based light source that achieves SPDs similar to various conditions of daylight and incandescent lighting over the range of visible wavelengths. This light source is comprised of a linear combination of light converter channels containing dyes exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) fabricated through additive manufacturing, photoexcited by violet-emitting LEDs (VLED). This hybrid light source establishes a new benchmark for state-of-the-art artificial lighting at approximating daylight, with Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) color gamut index R g values within 3%, IES color fidelity index R f values within 7% through CCT values ranging from 4277 K to 22,333 K. We propose efficiency metrics to accurately quantify similarity between light sources and the respective reference daylight spectrum encompassing visual and circadian effects, facilitating WLED benchmarking. The efficiency metrics pertaining to circadian lighting performance remain within 10% over the same CCT range. These results advance lighting science to address simultaneously the grand challenges of health and sustainability.

Abstract:International standard CIE S 026:2018 provides lighting professionals and field researchers in chronobiology with a method to characterize light exposures with respect to non-visual photoreception and responses. This standard defines five spectral sensitivity functions that describe optical radiation for its ability to stimulate each of the five α-opic retinal photoreceptor classes that contribute to the non-visual effects of light in humans via intrinsically-photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). The CIE also recently published an open-access α-opic toolbox that calculates all the quantities and ratios of the α-opic metrology in the photometric, radiometric and photon systems, based on either a measured (user-defined) spectrum or selected illuminants (A, D65, E, FL11, LED-B3) built into the toolbox. For a wide variety of ecologically-valid conditions, the melanopsin-based photoreception of ipRGCs has been shown to account for the spectral sensitivity of non-visual responses, from shifting the timing of nocturnal sleep and melatonin secretion to regulating steady-state pupil diameter. Recent findings continue to confirm that the photopigment melanopsin also plays a role in visual responses, and that melanopsin-based photoreception may have a significant influence on brightness perception and aspects of spatial vision. Although knowledge concerning the extent to which rods and cones interact with ipRGCs in driving non-visual effects is still growing, a CIE position statement recently used melanopic equivalent daylight (D65) illuminance in preliminary guidance on applying "proper light at the proper time" to manipulate non-visual responses. Further guidance on this approach is awaited from the participants of the 2nd International Workshop on Circadian and Neurophysiological Photometry (in Manchester, August 2019). The new α-opic metrology of CIE S 026 enables traceable measurements and a formal, quantitative specification of personal light exposures, photic interventions and lighting designs. Here, we apply this metrology to everyday light sources including a natural daylight time series, a range of LED lighting products and, using the toobox, to a smartphone display screen. This collection of examples suggests ways in which variations in the melanopic content of light over the day can be adopted in strategies that use light to support human health and well-being.

Abstract:We have developed a two-measure system for evaluating light sources' color rendition that builds upon conceptual progress of numerous researchers over the last two decades. The system quantifies the color fidelity and color gamut (change in object chroma) of a light source in comparison to a reference illuminant. The calculations are based on a newly developed set of reflectance data from real samples uniformly distributed in color space (thereby fairly representing all colors) and in wavelength space (thereby precluding artificial optimization of the color rendition scores by spectral engineering). The color fidelity score R(f) is an improved version of the CIE color rendering index. The color gamut score R(g) is an improved version of the Gamut Area Index. In combination, they provide two complementary assessments to guide the optimization of future light sources. This method summarizes the findings of the Color Metric Task Group of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). It is adopted in the upcoming IES TM-30-2015, and is proposed for consideration with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE).

Abstract:The CIE colour rendering index (CRI) has been used to test the colour rendering properties of light sources for over 30 years. However, this method is outdated and problematic, especially for evaluating white light emitting diodes (LEDs) [1]. In present work, the current CIE Test Method has been investigated by comparing visual colour rendering of test samples between LED light sources and a reference fluorescent lamp. The results show that CIE CRI is not good enough to predict visual perception. Moreover, the method was modified based on CAM02-UCS [2], and it provided better correlation between visual and predicted colour rendering values.

Abstract:The use of LEDs is increasing rapidly in both the commercial and residential markets. Nowadays, the main way to measure the luminous intensity distribution of a LED is by using a goniophotometer. This takes a long time which means its test efficiency is low. In this paper, we will propose a new way to measure the luminous intensity distribution of LEDs based on the Luneburg lens, which is a kind of dielectric lens with continuously changed index of refraction, with high efficiency and low cost. We also develop a complete test system and give the result of a simulation of the test system.
