Abstract:This article focuses on the change in colour appearance of a large display arising from various illumination conditions. Nine experimental phases were conducted according to different surround conditions including dark, indoor, and outdoor conditions. Each of the presented test colours was assessed by 10 observers using a magnitude estimation method. The surrounds used in all phases were divided into two groups: excluding and including veiling glare. Additionally, the effect due to different sizes of both stimuli and surround was investigated. Diverse visual effects were examined and reported. Finally, the visual colour appearance data were used test the CIECAM02 colour appearance model. (C`) 2010 Wiley Periodicals. Inc. Abstract:With the development of LED technology, spectral tuning and spectral engineering are becoming more and more popular. The spectra are generally engineered to enhance the visual or non-visual response introduced by optical radiation. Color quality, an important component of lighting quality, attracts considerable attention of the LED manufacturers. This paper reports two hypothesis-driven psychophysical studies which were conducted in full-scaled rooms, revealing the important considerations for LED spectral engineering.

Abstract:An average healthy person does not perceive the world in just black and white. Moreover, the perceived world is not composed of pixels and through vision humans perceive structures. However, the acquisition and display systems discretize the world. Therefore, we need to consider pixels, structures and colors to model the quality of experience. Quality assessment methods use the pixel-wise and structural metrics whereas color science approaches use the patch-based color differences. In this work, we combine these approaches by extending CIEDE2000 formula with perceptual color difference to assess image quality. We examine how perceptual color difference-based metric (PCDM) performs compared to PSNR, CIEDE2000, SSIM, MS-SSIM and CW-SSIM on the LIVE database. In terms of linear correlation, PCDM obtains compatible results under white noise (97.9%), Jpeg (95.9%) and Jp2k (95.6%) with an overall correlation of 92.7%. We also show that PCDM captures color-based artifacts that can not be captured by structure-based metrics.

Abstract:Colors have a significant impact on marketing so designers often use color strategically to shape brand personality and purchase intent. The automatic color design of advertising images is challenging because it must satisfy esthetic goals while also complying with the color design for different content, brand or targeted audience. This paper proposes a data-driven method to color advertising images automatically according to input product color and context-related keywords. To generate good coloring suggestions, we collected 13,000 well-labeled adverting images and built two probabilistic models to capture stylistic color properties. To collect the color preferences of potential users, we developed a color analyzer to display the result of clustering advertising images. Using the visual display, a user can explore and select images to guide our model to generate more personalized colors. We applied our method to three coloring tasks including keyword-based coloring, product-based coloring and user-guide coloring to test its performance against three coloring goals. In perceptual studies, colorings generated by our method were preferred to those generated by other models or created by non-professional students.

Abstract:In this work, the correlation between the whiteness of lighting and the preference for the colour of lighting was comprehensively investigated based on four psychophysical studies. Different sets of experimental light sources, two of constant correlated colour temperatures (CCT) and two of different CCTs were adopted to illuminate multiple experimental objects with different illuminance levels (200 lx or 500 lx). The observers were asked to rate their colour preference towards the illuminated objects and rate their white perception towards the illuminated environment of the empty light booth. It was found that for the studies with same CCT but different chromaticities, people indeed preferred whiter illumination. However, for the cases with multiple CCTs, that statement is only valid between 2500 K and 5500 K, since too white a light source impaired colour preference. In addition, based on the whiteness rating data, the performance of three typical metrics for white lighting was assessed. The findings of this study may contribute to a deeper understanding of colour and whiteness perception in lighting, especially for lighting designers and manufacturers.

The Prediction of Perceived Colour Differences by Colour Fidelity Metrics

Abstract:A psychophysical experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of various colour spaces, colour difference formulae, colour matching functions and colour fidelity measures in predicting perceived colour differences. Ten observers evaluated the colour differences of 20 colour samples under 11 pairs of light sources. The results suggest that the colour differences calculated using the CIE 1964 colour matching functions in the CAM02-UCS colour space can predict the perceived colour differences. IES-R-f which used the 20 colour samples and the reference illuminants used in the experiment was highly correlated to the perceived colour difference. The importance of a uniform spectral sensitivity for colour fidelity measures is also identified.

Perception of White for Stimuli with Luminance Beyond the Diffuse White

Abstract:The appearance of color stimuli with luminance levels beyond the diffuse white is gaining importance due to the popularity of high dynamic range (HDR) displays. Past work on color appearance of stimuli, color appearance models, and uniform color spaces mainly focused on the stimuli with luminance levels below the diffuse white, which were produced using surface color samples or conventional standard dynamic range (SDR) displays. In this study, we focused on the perception of white appearance for stimuli with luminance beyond the diffuse white. Human observers adjusted the color appearance of a stimulus to the whitest under different adapting conditions, including a dark condition and 12 illuminated conditions. It was found that the chromaticities for producing the white appearance under the dark condition were generally similar to those under the 6500 K conditions, regardless of the adapting luminance levels. In comparison to a recent study focusing on the stimuli with luminance below the diffuse white, the perception of white under the conditions with the adapting CCT levels of 2700, 3500, and 5000 K was significantly affected by the lightness level of the stimulus, which cannot be accurately characterized by CAM02-UCS. The results can be used for reproducing white appearance for highlights in HDR scenes. Further investigations on uniform color spaces for characterizing stimuli with luminance beyond the diffuse white are urgently needed for processing and displaying HDR images.
Perceived Color Gamut in Images: From Boundary to Difference

Abstract:A larger display color gamut volume (CGV) is expected to produce higher perceived brightness and colorfulness of the images displayed. However, display control algorithms such as gamut mapping and color conversion need to be carefully controlled to fully take advantage of the higher luminance and more saturated display primaries. Using RGBW displays (RGB plus a white channel) as a special case in contrast to RGB displays, it is demonstrated that a larger RGB display gamut enclosed by the boundary did not guarantee a larger color gamut perceived in images. Five gamuts with different white channel contributions were simulated, and seven different image contents were curated and rendered on each display. Using a paired comparison experiment with 33 observers, the perceived scales of color gamut as perceived brightness and colorfulness were derived. The results show more correlation with the image-wise than display-wise CGV and can be explained with image color differences. Our findings highlight the importance of considering image contents when optimizing display gamut volume, which can be guided by such image-wise analysis.
Investigation on Effects of Adapting Chromaticities and Luminance on Color Appearance on Computer Displays Using Memory Colors

Abstract:CAT02, the most widely used chromatic adaptation transform to characterize the chromatic adaptation mechanism in the human visual system, includes a factor D to characterize the degree of chromatic adaptation. This factor, however, is only determined by the luminance level of the adapting field and surround. This study was designed to investigate how the change of adapting chromaticities and the simultaneous changes of adapting chromaticities and luminance affect the degree of chromatic adaptation and color appearance on computer displays. The human observers adjusted the color appearance of various familiar objects and cubes on different display backgrounds. A higher degree of chromatic adaptation was found when using familiar objects, which was likely due to the cognitive mechanism. Both the adapting chromaticities and luminance significantly affected the degree of chromatic adaptation, with a lower degree under an adapting condition with a lower adapting correlated color temperature and a lower adapting luminance. In addition, the effect of adapting luminance on colorfulness (known as the Hunt Effect) was likely to be overpredicted in CAM02-UCS, which merits further investigations.
A Revised Formulation Based on CIECAM16 for Cross-media Colour Reproduction Via Real Scene Experiment

Abstract:In order to reproduce the colour appearance between real scene and images on self-luminous display, this study conducted a series of psychophysical experiments using threshold method. Three types of real scenes were built up in a lighting room, including painting, fruit and vegetable, skin colour chart. Sixteen adapting conditions were designed including four CCTs (3000K, 4500K, 6500K, 8000K) and 4 luminance levels (10lux, 100lux, 500lux, 1000lux). Four displays with different sizes were studied. The result indicated that the colour appearance of real scene and the image on the display were different, especially for low CCT and luminance level. The contents of scene and size of display didn’t show a significate impact. The prediction performance of CIECAM16 was tested, and a revised formulation was proposed with high accuracy.
Color Difference Evaluation for Wide-Color-gamut Displays.

Abstract:With the emerging demand for wide-color-gamut displays, an issue has been raised in which the commonly used color difference formulae or uniform color spaces that were derived based on the data produced in the relatively smaller color gamut could be unreliable for predicting color differences in the highly saturated color regions. A psychophysical experiment was carried out for evaluating color difference at a luminance level of 310cd/m2 on a wide-color-gamut display with an approximate DCI-P3 color gamut. Twelve color centers were selected to cover the entire gamut boundary. There were 192 pairs of samples over 12 color centers judged by 18 observers using the greyscale psychophysical method. The data set was used to test the performance of six uniform color spaces and color difference equations, CIELAB, CIEDE2000, CAM02-UCS, Jzazbz, ICTCP, and nICTCP, a newly revised ICTCP formula. The color discrimination ellipses were used to test local and global uniformity of color spaces and compared with previous studies. The results revealed that all formulae improved their performance to have a mean lightness parametric factor of about 0.5. CAM02-UCS significantly outperformed the others in overall, local, and global uniformity. The high-quality visual data set is recommended to evaluate or to derive color difference formulae for WCG applications in the future.

Abstract:The work described here forms part of a research project entitled Predictive Perceptual Colour Models. The aim of this project is to develop a colour appearance model capable of predicting changes of colour appearance under various different viewing conditions. This will provide industry with a quantitative measure for assessing the quality of colour reproduction and enable more rapid and accurate proofing simulations in the graphic art industry. A large-scale experiment has been carried out in which colour appearance was assessed under a wide range of viewing conditions. The parameters studied were (1) D65, D50, white fluorescent, and tungsten light sources, (2) luminance levels of about 40 and 240 cd/m2, (3) five background conditions: white, grey, black, grey with white border, and grey with black border, and (4) two media: luminous colours (displayed on a high-resolution colour monitor) and nonluminous colours (presented in a viewing cabinet). Each colour was assessed by a panel of six or seven observers using a magnitude estimation method. In total, 43,332 estimations were made, and these form the LUTCHI Colour Appearance Data. Data analysis has been carried out to examine the reliability of the experimental results and to understand the effects of the various viewing parameters studied. (Part II of this article describes how the LUTCHI Colour Appearance Data has been used to test the performance of various colour spaces and models.)

Abstract:Two psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the color appearance under non-uniform surround conditions with variation of stimulus luminance, surround luminance, background luminance, background orientation, and background size. The results show that the background size and surround luminance influence the appearance intensively, but that the orientation of background pattern has little effect. A method to determine optimal parameters for the CIECAM02 color appearance model in lighting applications is proposed. An UGR-based model also is optimized for brightness estimation. Abstract:Although colour science has been widely used in a variety of industries over the years, it has not been fully explored in the field of product design. This paper will initially introduce the three main application fields of colour science: colour specification, colour-difference evaluation and colour appearance modelling. By integrating these advanced colour technologies together with modern colour imaging devices such as display, camera, scanner and printer, some computer systems have been recently developed to assist designers for designing colour palettes through colour selection by means of a number of widely used colour order systems, for creating harmonised colour schemes via a categorical colour system, for generating emotion colours using various colour emotional scales and for facilitating colour naming via a colour-name library. All systems are also capable of providing accurate colour representation on displays and output to different imaging devices such as printers.
