Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2‐D) hybrid model is developed to investigate the second harmonic (SH) generation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. Applying the singular value decomposition method to simulated fields, we show that the SH exhibits wave properties analogous to typical EMIC waves generated by ion cyclotron instabilities, that is, left‐hand polarization and small wave normal angle. However, the bicoherence index inferred from simulated fields reflects a strong phase coupling between the fundamental wave (FW) and the SH, illustrating the nonlinear generation of the SH by the FW. The necessary conditions, especially for the wave vector relation, are further verified from a 2‐D perspective. The simulated amplitude ratios well meet the theoretical results only in the SH saturation stage, while the necessary conditions remain satisfied almost throughout the simulation. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the SH excitation in a 2‐D simulation domain, contributing to a deeper understanding of EMIC wave nonlinear generation.

Abstract:Parametric instabilities during the injection of lower hybrid waves into tokamak edge plasmas have received considerable attention for affecting the current drive at high density, mainly through spectral broadening. Here, kinetic theory of parametric instabilities was revisited in the electromagnetic framework. From Vlasov–Maxwell equations in the guiding center formalism, the theory of parametric instabilities in the electromagnetic framework is presented with appropriate nonlinearity treatment. Numerical calculations are performed under realistic lower hybrid current drive experimental parameters. Comparison between the electrostatic and electromagnetic results shows that the electromagnetic corrections have a stabilizing effect on the parametric process in all decay channels. The quantitative differences in growth rates, as well as in the most unstable regions, might have a non-negligible impact on the amplification factor of the parametric instabilities. However, with the dependence of parametric instabilities on the local plasma parameters, calculations show the same tendency between the electromagnetic and electrostatic model in a wide parameter range.

Abstract:Large-amplitude electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves induce unique dynamics of charged particle movement in the magnetosphere. In a recent study, modulation of the ion pitch angle in the presence of large-amplitude EMIC waves is observed, and a good explanation for this phenomenon is lacking. In this paper, we investigate this modulation primarily via a one-dimensional hybrid simulation model. We find that the modulation is caused by the bulk velocity triggered by large-amplitude EMIC waves. Affected by the bulk velocity, the number density of ions will enhance around a pitch angle of ∼90°. Beyond that, the ion pitch angle is also modulated by the EMIC waves, and the modulation period is half of the EMIC waves' period. In addition, parameters that affect ion pitch angle modulation, including the wave amplitude, ion energy, ion species, and wave normal angle, are studied in this paper.

Abstract:Harmonic Alfven waves in the magnetosphere have been reported by recent observation [Chen et al., Astrophys. J. 859, 120 (2018)]. In this paper, one-dimensional hybrid simulations are performed to investigate the generation of harmonic Alfven waves. We find that when Alfven waves propagate obliquely with respect to the ambient magnetic field, electrostatic components (or equivalently the density fluctuations) emerge, and their coupling with the electromagnetic field associated Alfven waves leads to the harmonics of Alfven waves. These high-frequency harmonic Alfven waves can resonantly interact with heavy ions when the cyclotron resonant condition is satisfied and preferentially heat heavy ions in the perpendicular direction. The implications to solar coronal heating are also discussed in the paper.

Abstract:In order to find an approximate solution to the Vlasov-Maxwell equation system describing the lower hybrid wave propagation in magnetic confined plasmas, the use of the WKB method leads to the ray tracing equations. The Hamiltonian character of the ray tracing equations is investigated analytically and numerically in order to deduce the physical properties of the wave propagating without absorption in the confined plasma. The consequences of the Hamiltonian character of the equations on the travelling wave, in particular, on the evolution of the parallel wavenumber along the propagation path have been accounted and the chaotic diffusion of the timeaveraged parallel wave-number towards higher values has been evaluated. Numerical analysis by means of a Runge-Kutta based algorithm implemented in a ray tracing code supplies the analytical considerations. A numerical tool based on the symplectic integration of the ray trajectories has been developed.

Abstract:Parametric coupling of waves is one of the most efficient mechanisms of energy transfer that can lead to the growth or decay of waves. This transfer occurs at frequencies close to their natural frequencies. In partially ionized solar plasma, there are a multitude of waves that can undergo this process. Here, we study the parametric coupling of Alfvén waves propagating in a partially ionized solar plasma with ionization-recombination waves identified by our study to appear in a plasma in ionization non-equilibrium. Depending on the parameters that describe the plasma (density, temperature), coupling can lead to a parametric resonance. Our study determines the occurrence conditions of parametric resonance, by finding the boundaries between stable and unstable regions in the parameter space. Our results show that collisions and non-equilibrium recombination can both contribute to the onset of unstable behaviour of parametrically resonant Alfvén waves. Particle simulation of lower hybrid waves in tokamak plasmas

Abstract:Global particle simulations of the lower hybrid waves have been carried out using fully kinetic ions and drift kinetic electrons with a realistic electron-to-ion mass ratio. The lower hybrid wave frequency, mode structure, and electron Landau damping from the electrostatic simulations agree very well with the analytic theory. Linear simulation of the propagation of a lower hybrid wave-packet in the toroidal geometry shows that the wave propagates faster in the high field side than the low field side, in agreement with a ray tracing calculation. Electromagnetic benchmarks of lower hybrid wave dispersion relation are also carried out. Electromagnetic mode conversion are observed in toroidal geometry, slow waves are launched at the plasma boundary and converts to fast waves at the mode conversion layer, which is consistent with linear theory.

Abstract:High‐speed jets (HSJs) are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetosheath. The HSJs can drive shock‐like bow waves when compressing the ambient plasma, which are important for the HSJ's evolution and the energization of charged particles. Here we present the first two‐dimensional hybrid simulation of the formation and evolution of jet‐driven bow waves. The simulated bow waves exhibit localized enhanced magnetic field and ion density, with their peaks separated by the order of ion inertial length. The bow waves are formed when a super‐magnetosonic HSJ encounters a magnetic structure with the magnetic field nearly perpendicular to the HSJ's velocity. The magnetic field structure acts as an obstacle to deflect and decelerate the jet, causing the pile up of ions on the jet side and the compression of the magnetic structure on the downstream side. Our study explains the observed properties of bow waves, and helps to better understand the evolution of HSJs.

Abstract:Parametric decay instability (PDI) plays an important role in the interaction between high-powerful HF electromagnetic (EM) waves and ionosphere plasma. In order to study the PDI, a numerical simulation model has been created in this article. The generalized Zakharov method was used to process the routine plasma dynamic equations accompanied with a radio wave propagation model and background plasma density close to the actual ionosphere. Simulation results indicated that high-powerful HF EM waves can excite two electrostatic (ES) wave modes which are Langmuir and Ion-Acoustic waves near the reflection point of the ordinary waves (O-mode) at a millisecond timescale. The wave number of the two electrostatic wave modes in the simulation is about 5 similar to 11 rad . m(-1) which is largely consistent with the theoretical results 4 similar to 7 rad . m(-1) calculated by their dispersion relation. The perturbation density amplitude grows exponentially from 10(6) m(-3) to 10(10) m(-3) till significantly influencing the plasma frequency correlated to 'low frequency' density of background plasma. Then it is followed by plasma cavitation structure and trapped Langmuir waves. Amplitude of the electrostatic field in the disturbance area can reach to 100 V . m(-1). Finally it leads to an intense localized cavitation turbulence. Study in this article contributes to a deep comprehension for the PDI physical mechanism. It is also helpful to study the complex nonlinear interaction between high -power HF EM waves and ionosphere plasma.
Charged space debris induced nonlinear magnetosonic waves using inertial magnetohydrodynamics

Abstract:The excitations of nonlinear magnetosonic waves in presence of charged space debris in the low Earth orbital plasma region is investigated taking into account effects of electron inertia in the framework of classical magnetohydrodynamics, which is also referred to as inertial magnetohydrodynamics. Magnetosonic waves are found to be governed by a forced Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with the forcing term representing effects of space debris particles. The dynamical behaviors of both slow and fast magnetosonic solitary waves is explored in detail. Exact accelerated magnetosonic lump solutions are shown to be stable for the entire region in parameter space of slow waves and a large region in parameter space of fast waves. In a similar way, magnetosonic curved solitary waves become stable for a small region in parameter space of fast waves. These exact solutions with special properties are derived for specific choices of debris functions. These novel results can have potential applications in scientific and technological aspects of space debris detection and mitigation.

Abstract:Particle acceleration by plasma waves and spontaneous wave generation are fundamental energy and momentum exchange processes in collisionless plasmas. Such wave-particle interactions occur ubiquitously in space. We present ultrafast measurements in Earth's magnetosphere by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft that enabled quantitative evaluation of energy transfer in interactions associated with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. The observed ion distributions are not symmetric around the magnetic field direction but are in phase with the plasma wave fields. The wave-ion phase relations demonstrate that a cyclotron resonance transferred energy from hot protons to waves, which in turn nonresonantly accelerated cold He+ to energies up to ~2 kilo-electron volts. These observations provide direct quantitative evidence for collisionless energy transfer in plasmas between distinct particle populations via wave-particle interactions.

Abstract:Analytic solutions for the envelope structures of two non-linearly coupled lower hybrid waves propagating along their respective cone trajectories are obtained. The coupling occurs through induced scattering by particles. The results indicate anomalous spatial pump depletion. Implications to lower hybrid plasma heating experiments are also discussed.
