Abstract:Using the single electron model, the acceleration of electrons in combined circularly polarized intense laser fields and the spontaneous quasistatic fields (including axial and azimuthal magnetic fields, the axial and transverse electric fields) produced in intense laser plasma interaction is investigated analytically and numerically by fitting the proper parameters of the quasistatic fields based on the data from the experiment and numerical calculation. A new resonant condition is given. It is found that the resonance acceleration of electron depends not only on laser field, but also on the bounce frequency oscillating in the quasistatic magnetic field and electric field. The net energy gained by electron does not increase monotonously with axial electric field, but there are some optimal axial electric fields.

Abstract:The acceleration of electrons by the self-generated quasi-static magnetic field in the interaction of n laser pulses with a plasma is investigated. The relativistic dynamics of a single electron is followed numerically. It is found that the electron can be much more effectively accelerated by n laser pulses, each with amplitude a(0) and having a fixed frequency difference from the preceding one, than by a single pulse with amplitude na(0). The large enhancement of acceleration can be attributed to stochastic-like resonance between the electron motion at the beat-frequencies of lasers and at the cyclotron motion frequency.

Abstract:The exchange-correlation of electrons, as a fundamental effect in quantum mechanics, plays an important role in the collective motions of electrons in warm dense matter. We derive the quantum kinetic equations based on the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation. By using a temperature-dependent functional for the exchange correlation, the excitations of electrostatic waves are analyzed under the adiabatic local density approximation (ALDA). We find that the influences of the exchange-correlation effect on the group velocity of electrostatic waves can be as high as 10% when both the density and temperature are low. Moreover, we also compare the results obtained by using ALDA-based kinetic theory, exchange kinetic theory, and quantum hydrodynamics, and discuss the differences among them.

Abstract:This study analyzes the effects of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves on relativistic electron scattering and losses in the Earth’s outer radiation belt. EMIC emissions are commonly observed in the inner magnetosphere and are known to reach high amplitudes, causing significant pitch angle changes in primarily > 1 MeV electrons via cyclotron resonance interactions. We run test-particle simulations of electrons streaming through helium band waves with different amplitudes and wave normal angles and assess the sensitivity of advective and diffusive scattering behaviors to these two parameters, including the possibility of very oblique propagation. The numerical analysis confirms the importance of harmonic resonances for oblique waves, and the very oblique waves are observed to efficiently scatter both co-streaming and counter-streaming electrons. However, strong finite Larmor radius effects limit the scattering efficiency at high pitch angles. Recently discussed force-bunching effects and associated strong positive advection at low pitch angles are, surprisingly, shown to cause no decrease in the phase space density of precipitating electrons, and it is demonstrated that the transport of electrons into the loss cone balances out the scattering out of the loss cone. In the case of high-amplitude obliquely propagating waves, weak but non-negligible losses are detected well below the minimum resonance energy, and we identify them as the result of non-linear fractional resonances. Simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that these resonances might contribute to subrelativistic electron precipitation but are likely to be overshadowed by non-resonant effects.

Case Study of Solar Wind Suprathermal Electron Acceleration at the Earth's Bow Shock

Abstract:We present a case study of the in situ acceleration of solar wind suprathermal electrons at the two quasi-perpendicular-bow-shock crossings on 2015 November 4, combining the Wind 3D Plasma and Energetic Particle measurements of ambient solar wind suprathermal electrons and Magnetospheric Multiscale mission measurements of shocked suprathermal electrons. In both cases, the omnidirectional differential fluxes of shocked suprathermal electrons in the downstream exhibit a double-power-law energy spectrum with a spectral index of ∼3 at energies below a downward break εbrk near 40 keV and index of ∼6 at energies above, different from the unshocked suprathermal electrons observed in the ambient solar wind. At energies below (above) εbrk, the observed electron flux ratio between the downstream and ambient solar wind, JD/JA, peaks near 90° PA (becomes roughly isotropic). Electrons at εbrk have an average electron gyrodiameter (across bow shock) comparable to the shock thickness. These suggest that the bow-shock acceleration of suprathermal electrons is likely dominated by the shock drift acceleration mechanism. For electrons at energies below (above) εbrk, their estimated drift time appears to be roughly energy independent (decrease with energy), leading to the formation of a double-power-law spectrum substantially steepening at a break that’s determined by the shock thickness.

Abstract:We investigate the electron acceleration dynamics in spatially stochastic wave fields. For a bounded system, the spectra (frequency and wave number) of the stochastic wave fields are discrete so that they can form spatiotemporal "singular" structures once their phases are in synchronization. As a consequence, the electrons will experience significant scattering by these singular structures, which is an in-phase effect of an ensemble of non-resonant wave-particle interactions. In the presence of parallel symmetry breaking, it is found that the governing Fokker-Planck equation has a structure similar to that of the resonant wave-particle interaction but with a broader parameter regime in the velocity/energy space of the electron distribution function.
Electron Acceleration at Quasi-parallel Non-relativistic Shocks: A 1D Kinetic Survey

Abstract:We present a survey of 1D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of quasi-parallel non-relativistic shocks to identify the environments favorable for electron acceleration. We explore an unprecedented range of shock speeds $v_{\rm sh}\approx 0.067-0.267\,c$, Alfvén Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm A} = 5-40$, sonic Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm s} = 5-160$, as well as the proton-to-electron mass ratios $m_{\rm i}/m_{\rm e}=16-1836$. We find that high Alfvén Mach number shocks can channel a large fraction of their kinetic energy into nonthermal particles, self-sustaining magnetic turbulence and acceleration to larger and larger energies. The fraction of injected particles is $\lesssim 0.5\%$ for electrons and $\approx 1\%$ for protons, and the corresponding energy efficiencies are $\lesssim 2\%$ and $\approx 10\%$, respectively. The extent of the nonthermal tail is sensitive to the Alfvén Mach number; when $\mathcal{M}_{\rm A}\lesssim 10$, the nonthermal electron distribution exhibits minimal growth beyond the average momentum of the downstream thermal protons, independently of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. Acceleration is slow for shocks with low sonic Mach numbers, yet nonthermal electrons still achieve momenta exceeding the downstream thermal proton momentum when the shock Alfvén Mach number is large enough. We provide simulation-based parametrizations of the transition from thermal to nonthermal distribution in the downstream (found at a momentum around $p_{\rm i,e}/m_{\rm i}v_{\rm sh} \approx 3\sqrt{m_{\rm i,e}/m_{\rm i}}$), as well as the ratio of nonthermal electron to proton number density. The results are applicable to many different environments and are important for modeling shock-powered nonthermal radiation.

Shock Acceleration of ~1-100 Kev Electrons at Earth's Bow Shock

Abstract:We present a statistical study of in-situ shock acceleration of ~1-100 keV solar wind suprathermal electrons at Earth&#8217;s bow shock, by using Wind 3D plasma and energetic particle measurements in ambient solar wind and MMS measurements in shock downstream. We pick out 74 shock cases (1 quasi-parallel shock, 73 quasi-perpendicular shocks) during 2015 October - 2017 January, and classify them into 4 types according to their energy spectra in downstream: type 0 (23 cases) without significant electron acceleration after shock passage, type 1 (24 cases) with power-law spectrum, J &#8733;&#949;&#946;1_dn, at ~0.8-10 keV, type 2 (16 cases) with power-law-spectrum at ~0.8-10 keV and significant flux enhancement above 30 keV, and type 3 (11 cases) with a clear double-power-law spectrum, J &#8733; &#949;&#946;1_dn (J &#8733; &#949;&#946;2_dn) when &#949; &#171; &#949;dntr&#160;&#160;(&#949; &#187; &#949;dntr), bending down at &#949;dntr ~20-90 keV. The spectral indexes at lower energies for type 1, type 2 and type 3, &#946;1dn, range from 2.5 to 5, while the spectral indexes at higher energies for type 3, &#946;2dn, range from 4 to 9, and all the spectral indexes have no significant correlation with those in ambient solar wind. Among the 4 types, type 3 is the strongest acceleration with the largest flux enhancement and the lowest &#946;1dn. Besides, we find that the flux ratio between downstream and ambient solar wind Jdn/Jab is field-perpendicular for most cases in both low and high energies, and Jdn/Jab (&#946;1dn) has positive (negative) correlations with &#952;Bn and magnetic field compression ratio, rB, which favor the shock drift acceleration (SDA) mechanism. However, Jdn/Jab has no correlation with the drift electric field Ed, while the normalized drift time, Td/Ttr, has a positive correlation with &#952;Bn, it suggests that &#952;Bn&#160;can influence electron drift time and thus influence the acceleration efficiency.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of electron pitch-angle scattering by ion-acoustic electrostatic fluctuations present in the Earth's bow shock and, presumably, collisionless shocks in general. We numerically simulate electron interaction with a single wave packet to demonstrate the scattering through phase bunching and phase trapping and quantify electron pitch-angle scattering in dependence on the wave amplitude and wave normal angle to the local magnetic field. The iterative mapping technique is used to model pitch-angle scattering of electrons by a large number of wave packets, which have been reported in the Earth's bow shock. Assuming that successive electron scatterings are not correlated, we revealed that the long-term dynamics of electrons is diffusive. The diffusion coefficient depends on the ratio between the wave packet amplitude and electron energy, . A quasi-linear scaling ( ) is observed for sufficiently small wave amplitudes, , while the diffusion is nonlinear ( ) above this threshold. We show that pitch-angle diffusion of keV electrons in the Earth's bow shock can be nonlinear. The corresponding diffusion coefficient scales with the intensity of the electrostatic fluctuations in a nonlinear fashion, with , while its expected values in the Earth's bow shock are . We speculate that in the Earth's quasi-perpendicular bow shock the stochastic shock drift acceleration mechanism with pitch-angle scattering provided by the electrostatic fluctuations can contribute to the acceleration of thermal electrons up to approximately 1 keV. The potential effects of a finite perpendicular coherence scale of the wave packets on the efficiency of electron scattering are discussed.

Abstract:The electric field intensity distribution and the phase velocity distribution of a slit in laser beams with different parameters are analyzed. Using three-dimensional test particle simulation, the laser beam with a slit induced acceleration of electrons with different initial momenta is investigated. Contrary to anticipation, the maximum net energy gain is not monotone increasing as the incoming momentum increasing. Based on the field structure and analysis, we gave an explanation for this.

Abstract:This study presents a theoretical framework for calculating acoustic scattering fields, as well as radiation force and torque resulting from the interaction between an incident wave and an axisymmetric object positioned at arbitrary orientations. Grounded in the partial-wave expansion method, it formulates scattering products using beam-shape and scalar scattering coefficients. The incorporation of geometric features into the scalar scattering coefficients is achieved through the conformal transformation approach. Notably, its applicability is restricted to scenarios where the object is positioned at its standard orientation, a limitation circumvented by employing rotational transformations to extend the model to non-standard orientations. A rotational transformation tunes the original frame (observation coordinate system) into a reference frame (computation coordinate system), for any deviated orientation and facilitating solution of scattering products. While the non-intuitive nature of rotational transformations disrupts the inheritability of the partial-wave expressions for the scattering products, an alternative approach is provided based on rotation addition theorem. This method directly incorporates object orientations into the beam-shape and scalar scattering coefficients, bypassing rotational transformations and preserving the partial-wave format. Comparative analysis with full three-dimensional numerical simulations shows theoretical methods are computationally more efficient while ensuring substantial consistency.

Abstract:Collisionless shock acceleration of carbon ions (C$^{6+}$) is investigated in the ultra-relativistic regime of laser-plasma interaction by accounting for the radiation reaction force and the pair production in particle-in-cell simulations. Both radiation reaction force and pair plasma formation tend to slow down the shock velocity, reducing the energy of the accelerated ions, albeit extending the time scales of the acceleration process. Slab plasma target achieves lower energy spread while target with a tailored density profile yields higher ion acceleration energies.
