Abstract:The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), characterized by vortices forming at a perturbed velocity shear layer, is a prominent candidate mechanism for mass, momentum, and energy transport across boundaries with velocity shear in various space plasma environments. It is of particular interest at the flanks of Earth's magnetopause, which separates the plasma of the magnetosphere from the adjacent shocked solar wind flow in the magnetosheath. In the present study, we use local hybrid-Vlasov simulations to investigate the ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs) associated with KHI in a magnetopause-like, transverse velocity shear layer setting (magnetic field perpendicular to the shear plane). We look for signatures of ion finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects, which could be utilized in spacecraft measurements to recognize when such effects are active, influencing KHI evolution and driving plasma mixing. We show that when a density/temperature asymmetry exists across the shear layer, FLR effects produce a heat flux along the vortex edges. With a magnitude (≳0.1 mW m −2 ) that is a significant fraction of the total magnetosheath energy flux, the heat flux provides a distinct signature that could be measured with a single spacecraft. During the late nonlinear stage of KHI, mixed non-Maxwellian ion VDFs are additionally found within the vortices. Our results are also valid in the presence of a small magnetic shear across the magnetopause.

Electron‐Scale Reconnecting Current Sheet Formed Within the Lower‐Hybrid Wave‐Active Region of Kelvin‐Helmholtz Waves

Abstract:We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of an electron‐scale reconnecting current sheet in the mixing region along the trailing edge of a Kelvin‐Helmholtz vortex during southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. Within this region, we observe intense electrostatic wave activity, consistent with lower‐hybrid waves. These waves lead to the transport of high‐density magnetosheath plasma across the boundary layer into the magnetosphere and generate a mixing region with highly compressed magnetic field lines, leading to the formation of a thin current sheet associated with electron‐scale reconnection signatures. Consistencies between these reconnection signatures and a realistic, local, fully‐kinetic simulation modeling this current sheet indicate a temporal evolution of the observed electron‐scale reconnection current sheet. The multi‐scale and inter‐process character of this event can help us understand plasma mixing connected to the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability and the temporal evolution of electron‐scale reconnection.

Interplay between Kelvin-Helmholtz and Lower-Hybrid Drift instabilities

Abstract:Boundary layers in space and astrophysical plasmas are the location of complex dynamics where different mechanisms coexist and compete eventually leading to plasma mixing. In this work, we present fully kinetic Particle-In-Cell simulations of different boundary layers characterized by the following main ingredients: a velocity shear, a density gradient and a magnetic gradient localized at the same position. In particular, the presence of a density gradient drives the development of the lower hybrid drift instability (LHDI), which competes with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in the development of the boundary layer. Depending on the density gradient, the LHDI can even dominate the dynamics of the layer. Because these two instabilities grow on different spatial and temporal scales, when the LHDI develops faster than the KHI an inverse cascade is generated, at least in 2D. This inverse cascade, starting at the LHDI kinetic scales, generates structures at scale lengths at which the KHI would typically develop. When that is the case, those structures can suppress the KHI itself because they significantly affect the underlying velocity shear gradient. We conclude that depending on the density gradient, the velocity jump and the width of the boundary layer, the LHDI in its nonlinear phase can become the primary instability for plasma mixing. These numerical simulations show that the LHDI is likely to be a dominant process at the magnetopause of Mercury. These results are expected to be of direct impact to the interpretation of the forthcoming BepiColombo observations.

Abstract:Turbulence is a fundamental process that drives mixing and energy redistribution across a wide range of astrophysical systems. For warm ( T ≈ 10 4 K ) plasma, the material is partially ionized, consisting of both ionized and neutral species. The interactions between ionized and neutral species are thought to play a key role in heating (or cooling) of partially ionized plasmas. Here, mixing is studied in a two-fluid partially ionized plasma undergoing the shear-driven Kelvin–Helmholtz instability to evaluate the thermal processes within the mixing layer. Two-dimensional numerical simulations are performed using the open-source (PIP) code that solves for a two-fluid plasma consisting of a charge-neutral plasma and multiple excited states of neutral hydrogen. Both collisional and radiative ionization and recombination are included. In the mixing layer, a complex array of ionization and recombination processes occur as the cooler layer joins the hotter layer, and vice versa. In localized areas of the mixing layer, the temperature exceeds the initial temperatures of either layer with heating dominated by collisional recombinations over turbulent dissipation. The mixing layer is in approximate ionization-recombination equilibrium, however the obtained equilibrium is different to the Saha–Boltzmann local thermal equilibrium. The dynamic mixing processes may be important in determining the ionization states, and with that intensities of spectral lines, of observed mixing layers. Decay of Kelvin-Helmholtz Vortices at the Earth's Magnetopause Under Pure Southward IMF Conditions

Abstract:At the Earth's low-latitude magnetopause, clear signatures of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves have been frequently observed during periods of the northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), whereas these signatures have been much less frequently observed during the southward IMF. Here, we performed the first 3-D fully kinetic simulation of the magnetopause KH instability under the southward IMF condition. The simulation demonstrates that fast magnetic reconnection is induced at multiple locations along the vortex edge in an early nonlinear growth phase of the instability. The reconnection outflow jets significantly disrupt the flow of the nonlinear KH vortex, while the disrupted turbulent flow strongly bends and twists the reconnected field lines. The resulting coupling of the complex field and flow patterns within the magnetopause boundary layer leads to a quick decay of the vortex structure, which may explain the difference in the observation probability of KH waves between northward and southward IMF conditions.

Abstract:The lower-hybrid drift instability (LHDI) is a pivotal phenomenon in astrophysics, playing a critical role in energy transfer, macroscopic structures, and evolutionary processes between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere. Using 2D two-fluids numerical simulation, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of LHDI during the evolution of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) at Earth's dusk-flank magnetopause. The numerical simulation results show that, during the linear phase of KHI, the LHDI, whose duration time is approximately ∆t1∼10tA, appears around the high-density arms. During the nonlinear phase of KHI, the LHDI appears around the KH vortexes, with a duration of about ∆t2∼5tA. The LHDI disappears with the decay of KH vortex.

Abstract:In this study, the mixing of temperature-stratified liquid metal free-surface flow by a delta-wing obstacle installed on the channel bottom has been experimentally and numerically investigated in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The surface temperature distribution of the channel was measured by using 25 thermocouples (TCs) embedded in the channel bottom, downstream of the obstacle, which was located upstream of the heater installed at the free-surface. The experiments were conducted for the turbulent flow region where Re = 12,000 and in the range of N = 0-5.02 in the presence of the transverse magnetic field. As for the laminar flow region, it is difficult to carry out the experiment, so the numerical simulations were conducted using Re = 2,300 and in the range of N = 0-10. According to the comparison of numerical results with and without the delta-wing obstacle in laminar flow region, the entire temperature distribution with the obstacle was warmer than that without the obstacle. This was consistent with the expectation that a delta-wing obstacle would increase thermal mixing.
Particle simulation of lower hybrid waves in tokamak plasmas

Abstract:Global particle simulations of the lower hybrid waves have been carried out using fully kinetic ions and drift kinetic electrons with a realistic electron-to-ion mass ratio. The lower hybrid wave frequency, mode structure, and electron Landau damping from the electrostatic simulations agree very well with the analytic theory. Linear simulation of the propagation of a lower hybrid wave-packet in the toroidal geometry shows that the wave propagates faster in the high field side than the low field side, in agreement with a ray tracing calculation. Electromagnetic benchmarks of lower hybrid wave dispersion relation are also carried out. Electromagnetic mode conversion are observed in toroidal geometry, slow waves are launched at the plasma boundary and converts to fast waves at the mode conversion layer, which is consistent with linear theory.

Kinetic effects on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in ion-to-magnetohydrodynamic scale transverse velocity shear layers: Particle simulations

Abstract:Ion-to-magnetohydrodynamic scale physics of the transverse velocity shear layer and associated Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in a homogeneous, collisionless plasma are investigated by means of full particle simulations. The shear layer is broadened to reach a kinetic equilibrium when its initial thickness is close to the gyrodiameter of ions crossing the layer, namely, of ion-kinetic scale. The broadened thickness is larger in B⋅Ω<0 case than in B⋅Ω>0 case, where Ω is the vorticity at the layer. This is because the convective electric field, which points out of (into) the layer for B⋅Ω<0 (B⋅Ω>0), extends (reduces) the gyrodiameters. Since the kinetic equilibrium is established before the KHI onset, the KHI growth rate depends on the broadened thickness. In the saturation phase of the KHI, the ion vortex flow is strengthened (weakened) for B⋅Ω<0 (B⋅Ω>0), due to ion centrifugal drift along the rotational plasma flow. In ion inertial scale vortices, this drift effect is crucial in altering the ion vortex size. These results indicate that the KHI at Mercury-like ion-scale magnetospheric boundaries could show clear dawn-dusk asymmetries in both its linear and nonlinear growth.
Lower-Hybrid Drift Instability and Macroscopic Flow of Colliding Magnetized Plasmas

Abstract:Microscopic instability and macroscopic flow pattern resulting from colliding plasmas are studied analytically in support of laboratory experiments. The plasma flows are assumed to stream radially from two separate centers. In a quasi-planar (2D) geometry, they may arise from an Ohmic explosion of two parallel wires, but similar configurations emerge from other outflows, e.g., colliding winds in binary star systems. One objective of this paper is to characterize the flow instabilities developing near the flow stagnation line. An exact solution for the Buneman-type dispersion equation is obtained without conventional simplifications. The unstable wave characteristics are key to anomalous resistivity that determines the reconnection rate of opposite magnetic fields transported with each flow toward the stagnation zone. The second objective of the paper is to calculate the stream function of the plasma shocked upon collision. We addressed this task by mapping the flow region to a hodograph plane and solving a Dirichlet problem for the stream function. By providing the instability growth rate, responsible for anomalous transport coefficients, and the overall flow configuration, these studies lay the ground for the next step. From there, we will examine the field reconnection scenarios and emerging mesoscopic structures, such as radial striata observed in the experiments.

Abstract:This study presents three-dimensional (3D) resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) dynamics at Earth's magnetospheric flanks during northward interplanetary magnetic field periods. By comparing two simulations with and without initial magnetic shear, we analyze the impact of distinct magnetic field orientations on plasma dynamics and magnetic reconnection events taking into account 3D mechanisms, such as KHI high latitude stabilization. The identical nature of the simulations, except for the presence/absence of an initial magnetic shear, enables, for the first time, a complete and coherent comparative analysis of the latitudinal distribution of KH vortices, current sheets, reconnection events, and the evolution of the mixing layer. In one configuration, a uniform magnetic field leads to double mid-latitude reconnection (MLR), while in the other, magnetic shear induces both type I vortex-induced reconnection (VIR) and MLR. Notably, the type I VIR observed in this second scenario results from the combined action of line advection and vortex-induced current sheet pinching (the classic mechanism driving two-dimensional type I VIR). Of particular importance is our quantification of newly closed field lines that experienced double reconnection, ultimately becoming embedded in solar wind plasma at low latitudes while remaining connected to magnetospheric plasma at high latitudes. The varying abundance of such lines in the two simulations holds implications for plasma transport at the magnetopause.

Abstract:In order to find an approximate solution to the Vlasov-Maxwell equation system describing the lower hybrid wave propagation in magnetic confined plasmas, the use of the WKB method leads to the ray tracing equations. The Hamiltonian character of the ray tracing equations is investigated analytically and numerically in order to deduce the physical properties of the wave propagating without absorption in the confined plasma. The consequences of the Hamiltonian character of the equations on the travelling wave, in particular, on the evolution of the parallel wavenumber along the propagation path have been accounted and the chaotic diffusion of the timeaveraged parallel wave-number towards higher values has been evaluated. Numerical analysis by means of a Runge-Kutta based algorithm implemented in a ray tracing code supplies the analytical considerations. A numerical tool based on the symplectic integration of the ray trajectories has been developed.
Electron-scale energy transfer due to lower hybrid waves during asymmetric reconnection

Abstract:We use Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission data to investigate electron-scale energy transfer due to lower hybrid drift waves during magnetopause reconnection. We analyze waves observed in an electron-scale plasma mixing layer at the edge of the magnetospheric outflow. Using high-resolution 7.5 ms electron moments, we obtain an electron current density with a Nyquist frequency of ~66 Hz, sufficient to resolve most of the lower hybrid drift wave power observed in the event. We then employ wavelet analysis to evaluate <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://dJ.dE" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, which accounts for the phase differences between the fluctuating quantities. The analysis shows that the energy exchange is localized within the plasma mixing layer, and it is highly fluctuating, with energy bouncing between waves and electrons throughout the analyzed time and frequency range. However, the cumulative sum over time indicates a net energy transfer from the waves to electrons. We observe an anomalous electron flow toward the magnetosphere, consistent with diffusion and electron mixing. These results indicate that waves and electrons interact dynamically to dissipate the excess internal energy accumulated by sharp density gradients. We conclude that the electron temperature profile within the plasma mixing layer is produced by a combination of electron diffusion across the layer, as well as heating by large-scale parallel potential and lower hybrid drift waves.

Electron acceleration driven by the lower-hybrid-drift instability: an extended quasilinear model

Abstract:Density inhomogeneities are ubiquitous in space and astrophysical plasmas, in particular at contact boundaries between different media. They often correspond to regions that exhibits strong dynamics on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Indeed, density inhomogeneities are a source of free energy that can drive various instabilities such as, for instance, the lower-hybrid-drift instability which in turn transfers energy to the particles through wave-particle interactions and eventually heat the plasma. We aim at quantifying the efficiency of the lower-hybrid-drift instability to accelerate and/or heat electrons parallel to the ambient magnetic field. We combine two complementary methods: full-kinetic and quasilinear models. We report self-consistent evidence of electron acceleration driven by the development of the lower-hybrid-drift instability using 3D-3V full-kinetic numerical simulations. The efficiency of the observed acceleration cannot be explained by standard quasilinear theory. For this reason, we develop an extended quasilinear model able to quantitatively predict the interaction between lower-hybrid fluctuations and electrons on long time scales, now in agreement with full-kinetic simulations results. Finally, we apply this new, extended quasilinear model to a specific inhomogeneous space plasma boundary: the magnetopause of Mercury, and we discuss our quantitative predictions of electron acceleration in support to future BepiColombo observations.

Lower hybrid to whistler mode conversion on a density striation

Abstract:When a wave packet composed of short wavelength lower hybrid modes traveling in an homogeneous plasma region encounters an inhomogeneity, it can resonantly excite long wavelength whistler waves via a linear mechanism known as mode conversion. An enhancement of lower hybrid/whistler activity has been often observed by sounding rockets and satellites in the presence of density depletions (striations) in the upper ionosphere. We address here the process of linear mode conversion of lower hybrid to whistler waves, mediated by a density striation, using a scalar-field formalism (in the limit of cold plasma linear theory) which we solve numerically. We show that the mode conversion can effectively transfer a large amount of energy from the short to the long wavelength modes. We also study how the efficiency scales by changing the properties (width and amplitude) of the density striation. We present a general criterion for the width of the striation that, if fulfilled, maximizes the conversion efficiency. Such a criterion could provide an interpretation of recent laboratory experiments carried out on the Large Plasma Device at UCLA.

Rugged magneto-hydrodynamic invariants in weakly collisional plasma turbulence: Two-dimensional hybrid simulation results

Abstract:We investigated plasma turbulence in the context of solar wind. We concentrated on properties of ideal second-order magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) and Hall MHD invariants. We studied the results of a two-dimensional hybrid simulation of decaying plasma turbulence with an initial large cross helicity and a negligible magnetic helicity. We investigated the evolution of the combined energy and the cross, kinetic, mixed, and magnetic helicities. For the combined (kinetic plus magnetic) energy and the cross, kinetic, and mixed helicities, we analysed the corresponding K\'arm\'an-Howarth-Monin (KHM) equation in the hybrid (kinetic proton and fluid electron) approximation. The KHM analysis shows that the combined energy decays at large scales. At intermediate scales, this energy cascades (from large to small scales) via the MHD non-linearity and this cascade partly continues via Hall coupling to sub-ion scales. The cascading combined energy is transferred (dissipated) to the internal energy at small scales via the resistive dissipation and the pressure-strain effect. The Hall term couples the cross helicity with the kinetic one, suggesting that the coupled invariant, referred to here as the mixed helicity, is a relevant turbulence quantity. However, when analysed using the KHM equations, the kinetic and mixed helicities exhibit very dissimilar behaviours to that of the combined energy. On the other hand, the cross helicity, in analogy to the energy, decays at large scales, cascades from large to small scales via the MHD+Hall non-linearity, and is dissipated at small scales via the resistive dissipation and the cross-helicity equivalent of the pressure-strain effect. In contrast to the combined energy, the Hall term is important for the cross helicity over a wide range of scales (even well above ion scales). In contrast, the magnetic helicity is scantily generated through the resistive term and does not exhibit any cascade.

Theory of Plasma Transport Induced by Low-Frequency Hydromagnetic Waves

Abstract:On the basis of the quasi-linear limit of the nonlinear gyrokinetic equations we have derived self-consistent, comprehensive theoretical results on plasma transport induced by low-frequency hydromagnetic waves. Effects such as finite ion Larmor radii, realistic magnetic field geometries, general plasma equilibria, magnetic trapping, and arbitrary wave polarizations are included in the present analysis. Corresponding transport equations for flux tube-averaged radial fluxes of particle, energy, and parallel momentum as well as local heating and parallel flow generation rates are obtained. The resultant transport coefficients exhibit the appealing physical pictures of exchanges of energies and momenta between resonant plasma particles and hydromagnetic wave quasi-particles. The present results also indicate that radial transport generally consists of convective components in addition to the usual diffusive ones. Applications to the particle transport at the dayside magnetopause as well as the nonlinear saturation of drift Alfven-ballooning mode instabilities [Chen and Hasegawa, 1991] are also presented.
