Abstract:The gas relationship is one of the important inherent characteristics of the compacted double- gas-chamber hydro-pneumatic strut (DHPS) system, which will affect the gas/oil pressure distribution and then system output characteristic. The dynamic properties of the developed compacted DHPS are much more sensitive to the gas relationship, as the heat generated in the working procedure is directly transferred to the gas chambers without buffer through the hydraulic media comparing to the Hydro-Pneumatic Strut system with external gas chamber(s) arrangement. Therefore, the ideal gas law utilized by most researchers in the modeling of HPS structure cannot well describe the gas characteristics in compacted DHPS, as it ignores the heat transfer. In this study, based on extensive experimental study and analysis applying on the designed prototype, the Benedict-Webb-Rubin (BWR) model with energy equation, in which the air contact area has been considered, is established to describe the gas properties of the designed compact DHPS, and named as BWR-h-model. It has been shown that the coefficient of determinations (R2) between the experimental data and model estimated result of the gas pressure in two chambers were both above 0.989. Besides, the dynamic properties of the compacted DHPS have been established combined with the gas model, the friction model, orifice damping force and inertial properties of both floating pistons. Good agreement can be found from the comparison of the dynamic properties of the designed compacted DHPS between the experimental data and the model estimation result. Through extensive experimental/numerical analysis, it has been shown that (1) the inertial force of the floating pistons has little effect to the dynamic properties of the compacted DHPS system; (2) the proposed gas model combined with the established orifices damping and friction forces models can effectively describe the dynamic properties of the compacted DHPS system.
