Abstract:For classes of topological vector spaces, we analyze under which conditions open-mapping, continuous-inverse, and closed-graph properties are equivalent. Here, closure under quotients with closed subspaces and closure under closed graphs are sufficient. We show that the class of barreled Ptak spaces is exactly the largest class of locally-convex topological vector spaces, which contains all Banach spaces, is closed under quotients with closed subspaces, is closed under closed graphs, is closed under continuous images, and for which an open-mapping theorem, a continuous-inverse theorem, and a closed-graph theorem holds. An analogous, weaker result also holds for the strictly larger class of barreled infra-Ptak spaces.

Abstract:We consider mappings that distort the modulus of families of paths in the opposite direction in the manner of Poletsky's inequality. Here we study the case when the mappings are not closed, in particular, they do not preserve the boundary of the domain under the mapping. Under certain conditions, we obtain results on the continuous boundary extension of such mappings in the sense of prime ends. In addition, we obtain corresponding results on the equicontinuity of families of such mappings in terms of prime ends.

Abstract:The algebraic path problem provides a general setting for shortest path algorithms in optimization and computer science. This work extends the algebraic path problem to networks equipped with input and output boundaries. We show that the algebraic path problem is functorial as a mapping from a double category whose horizontal composition is gluing of open networks. We introduce functional open matrices, for which the functoriality of the algebraic path problem has a more practical expression.

Abstract:The Union Closed Conjecture, posed by Peter Frankl in 1979, is one of the most renowned problems in Combinatorics. Its appeal stems from the simplicity of its statement and the potential complexity of its solution. The conjecture asserts that in any union-closed family of sets, there exists an element that belongs to at least half of the sets in the family. This paper explores the graph-theoretic formulation of the conjecture and establishes connections between the set-based and graph-based formulations. Through this connection, we derive new results and provide proofs for specific classes of graphs. Additionally, by analyzing the distribution of pendant vertices within various graphs, we demonstrate the validity of the conjecture for a broader range of graph classes.

Abstract:We extend the notion of graph homomorphism to cellularly embedded graphs (maps) by designing operations on vertices and edges that respect the surface topology; we thus obtain the first definition of map homomorphism that preserves both the combinatorial structure (as a graph homomorphism) and the topological structure of the surface (in particular, orientability and genus). Notions such as the core of a graph and the homomorphism order on cores are then extended to maps. We also develop a purely combinatorial framework for various topological features of a map such as the contractibility of closed walks, which in particular allows us to characterize map cores. We then show that the poset of map cores ordered by the existence of a homomorphism is connected and, in contrast to graph homomorphisms, does not contain any dense interval (so it is not universal for countable posets). Finally, we give examples of a pair of cores with an infinite number of cores between them, an infinite chain of gaps, and arbitrarily large antichains with a common homomorphic image.

The Dowker theorem via discrete Morse theory

Abstract:The Dowker theorem is a classical result in the topology of finite spaces, claiming that any binary relation between two finite spaces defines two homotopy-equivalent complexes (the Dowker complexes). Recently, Barmak strengthened this to a simple-homotopy-equivalence. We reprove Barmak's result using a combinatorial argument that constructs an explicit acyclic matching in the sense of discrete Morse theory.

Abstract:A (closed) dynamical system is a notion of how things can be, together with a notion of how they may change given how they are. The idea and mathematics of closed dynamical systems has proven incredibly useful in those sciences that can isolate their object of study from its environment. But many changing situations in the world cannot be meaningfully isolated from their environment - a cell will die if it is removed from everything beyond its walls. To study systems that interact with their environment, and to design such systems in a modular way, we need a robust theory of open dynamical systems. In this extended abstract, we put forward a general definition of open dynamical system. We define two general sorts of morphisms between these systems: covariant morphisms which include trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits; and contravariant morphisms which allow for plugging variables of some systems into parameters of other systems. We define an indexed double category of open dynamical systems indexed by their interface and use a double Grothendieck construction to construct a double category of open dynamical systems. In our main theorem, we construct covariantly representable indexed double functors from the indexed double category of dynamical systems to an indexed double category of spans. This shows that all covariantly representable structures of dynamical systems - including trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits - compose according to the laws of matrix arithmetic.

Abstract:Our main result is that any topological algebra based on a Boolean space is the extended Stone dual space of a certain associated Boolean algebra with additional operations. A particular case of this result is that the profinite completion of any abstract algebra is the extended Stone dual space of the Boolean algebra of recognizable subsets of the abstract algebra endowed with certain residuation operations. These results identify a connection between topological algebra as applied in algebra and Stone duality as applied in logic, and show that the notion of recognition originating in computer science is intrinsic to profinite completion in mathematics in general. This connection underlies a number of recent results in automata theory including a generalization of Eilenberg-Reiterman theory for regular languages and a new notion of compact recognition applying beyond the setting of regular languages. The purpose of this paper is to give the underlying duality theoretic result in its general form. Further we illustrate the power of the result by providing a few applications in topological algebra and language theory. In particular, we give a simple proof of the fact that any topological algebra quotient of a profinite algebra which is again based on a Boolean space is in fact a profinite algebra and we derive the conditions dual to the ones of the original Eilenberg theorem in a fully modular manner. We cast our results in the setting of extended Priestley duality for distributive lattices with additional operations as some classes of languages of interest in automata fail to be closed under complementation.

Existentially closed models and locally zero-dimensional toposes

Abstract:The notion of an existentially closed model is generalised to a property of geometric morphisms between toposes. We show that important properties of existentially closed models extend to existentially closed geometric morphisms, such as the fact that every model admits a homomorphism to an existentially closed one. Other properties do not generalise: classically, there are two equivalent definitions of an existentially closed model, but this equivalence breaks down for the generalised notion. We study the interaction of these two conditions on the topos-theoretic level, and characterise the classifying topos of the e.c. geometric morphisms when the conditions coincide.

On operadic open-closed maps in characteristic $p$

Abstract:Consider a closed monotone symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$. \cite{Gan2} constructed a cyclic open-closed map, which goes from the cyclic homology of the Fukaya category of $M$ to the $S^1$-equivariant quantum cohomology of $M$. In this paper, we show that with mod $p$ coefficients, Ganatra's cyclic open-closed map is compatible with a certain $\mathbb{Z}/p$-equivariant open-closed map under the natural $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin type comparison map for Hochschild homology. Along with the proof, this paper gives a new homotopy theoretic framework for studying open-closed maps in symplectic topology. These will be used in an upcoming work \cite{Che} to study mod $p$ equivariant enumerative invariants such as the Quantum Steenrod operations. The main insights of this paper are: 1) a $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin comparison result for ($\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$-) cyclic objects, 2) a new construction of the open-closed map using operadic Floer theory of \cite{AGV}, which gives rise to a new interpretation of its `$S^1$-equivariant' property, and 3) comparison of the new construction with its classical counterpart.

Abstract:On taking a non-trivial and semi-transitive bi-relation constituted by two (hard and soft) binary relations, we report a (i) p-continuity assumption that guarantees the completeness and transitivity of its soft part, and a (ii) characterization of a connected topological space in terms of its attendant properties on the space. Our work generalizes antecedent results in applied mathematics, all following Eilenberg (1941), and now framed in the context of a parametrized-topological space. This re-framing is directly inspired by the continuity assumption in Wold (1943-44) and the mixture-space structure proposed in Herstein and Milnor (1953), and the unifying synthesis of these pioneering but neglected papers that it affords may have independent interest.

Abstract:Stone duality generalizes to an equivalence between the categories $\mathsf{Stone}^{\mathsf{R}}$ of Stone spaces and closed relations and $\mathsf{BA}^\mathsf{S}$ of boolean algebras and subordination relations. Splitting equivalences in $\mathsf{Stone}^{\mathsf{R}}$ yields a category that is equivalent to the category $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and closed relations. Similarly, splitting equivalences in $\mathsf{BA}^\mathsf{S}$ yields a category that is equivalent to the category $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ of de Vries algebras and compatible subordination relations. Applying the machinery of allegories then yields that $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ is equivalent to $\mathsf{DeV^S}$, thus resolving a problem recently raised in the literature. The equivalence between $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ and $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ further restricts to an equivalence between the category ${\mathsf{KHaus}}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous functions and the wide subcategory $\mathsf{DeV^F}$ of $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ whose morphisms satisfy additional conditions.This yields an alternative to de Vries duality. One advantage of this approach is that composition of morphisms is usual relation composition.

Abstract:One of the prime motivation for topology was Homotopy theory, which captures the general idea of a continuous transformation between two entities, which may be spaces or maps. In later decades, an algebraic formulation of topology was discovered with the development of Homology theory. Some of the deepest results in topology are about the connections between Homotopy and Homology. These results are proved using intricate constructions. This paper re-proves these connections via an axiomatic approach that provides a common ground for homotopy and homology in arbitrary categories. One of the main contributions is a re-interpretation of convexity as an extrinsic rather than intrinsic property. All the axioms and results are applicable for the familiar context of topological spaces. This creates a complete framework for an algebraic characterization of various categories such as Dynamical systems, Open games, and Fractals, which also preserves a notion of Homotopy.
