Abstract:In this paper we introduce an open-closed cobordism category with maps to a background space. We identify the classifying space of this category for certain classes of background space. The key ingredient is the homology stability of mapping class groups with twisted coefficients.

Abstract:We discuss the homotopy surface category of a space which generalizes the 1+1-dimensional cobordism category of circles and surfaces to the situation where one introduces a background space. We explain how for a simply connected background space, monoidal functors from this category to vector spaces can be interpreted in terms of Frobenius algebras with additional structure.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a bordism category $\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ whose objects are bundles of closed $(d-1)$-dimensional piecewise linear manifolds and whose morphisms are bundles of $d$-dimensional piecewise linear cobordisms. In the main theorem of this article, we show that the classifying space $B\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ is weak homotopy equivalent to an infinite loop space. We regard $\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ as the piecewise linear analogue of the category of smooth cobordisms which has been studied extensively in connection to the Madsen-Weiss Theorem, and the main result of this paper is a first step towards obtaining Madsen-Weiss type results in the context of piecewise linear topology.

Abstract:We compute the classifying space of the surface category $\mathrm{Cob}_2$ whose objects are closed $1$-manifolds and whose morphisms are diffeomorphism classes of surface bordisms, and show that it is rationally equivalent to a circle. It is hence much smaller than the classifying space of the topologically enriched surface category $\mathcal{C}_2$ studied by Galatius-Madsen-Tillmann-Weiss. However, we also show that for the wide subcategory $\mathrm{Cob}_2^{\chi\le0} \subset \mathrm{Cob}_2$ that contains all morphisms without disks or spheres, the classifying space $B\mathrm{Cob}_2^{\chi\le0}$ is surprisingly large. Its rational homotopy groups contain the homology of all moduli spaces of tropical curves $\Delta_g$ as a summand. The technical key result shows that a version of positive boundary surgery applies to a large class of discrete symmetric monoidal categories, which we call labelled cospan categories. We also use this to show that the $(2,1)$-category of cospans of finite sets has a contractible classifying space.

Abstract:We prove that $S^1$ is a unimodular, cocommutative Hopf algebra in the category $CW^{1+1}$ of 2-equivalence classes of cobordisms of 2-dimensional CW-complexes and that $CW^{1+1}$ is actually equivalent to the symmetric monoidal category freely generated by such Hopf algebra. Moreover, we show that the algebraic structure the category ${\cal C}hb^{3+1}$ of cobordisms of orientable relative 4-dimensional 2-handlebody cobordisms up to 2-deformations described in \cite{BP12}, is a refinement of the algebraic structure of their spines.

Abstract:This paper is a survey of our previous works on open-closed homotopy algebras, together with geometrical background, especially in terms of compactifications of configuration spaces (one of Fred's specialities) of Riemann surfaces, structures on loop spaces, etc. We newly present Merkulov's geometric A_infty-structure [Internat. Math. Res. Notices (1999) 153--164, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0001007" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0001007">arXiv:math/0001007</a>] as a special example of an OCHA. We also recall the relation of open-closed homotopy algebras to various aspects of deformation theory.

Abstract:We introduce a new cohomology-theoretic method for classifying generic immersed curves in closed compact surfaces by using Gauss codes. This subsumes a result of J.S. Carter on classifying immersed curves in oriented compact surfaces, and provides a criterion for when an immersion is two-colorable. We note an application to twisted virtual link theory.

Abstract:We introduce a discrete cobordism category for nested manifolds and nested cobordisms between them. A variation of stratified Morse theory applies in this case, and yields generators for a general nested cobordism category. Restricting to a low-dimensional example of the ``striped cylinder'' cobordism category Cyl, we give a complete set of relations for the generators. With an eye towards the study of TQFTs defined on a nested cobordism category, we describe functors Cyl$\to\mathcal{C}$, which we call Cyl-objects in $\mathcal{C}$, and show that they are related to known algebraic structures such as Temperley-Lieb algebras and cyclic objects. We moreover define novel algebraic constructions inspired by the structure of Cyl-objects, namely a doubling construction on cyclic objects analogous to edgewise subdivision, and a cylindrical bar construction on self-dual objects in a monoidal category.

Abstract:A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of Ebert-Giansiracusa on the Deligne-Mumford compactifications. We also describe an extension of the period map for Riemann surfaces (going from the Deligne-Mumford compactification to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized varieties) in these terms.

Abstract:Consider a closed monotone symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$. \cite{Gan2} constructed a cyclic open-closed map, which goes from the cyclic homology of the Fukaya category of $M$ to the $S^1$-equivariant quantum cohomology of $M$. In this paper, we show that with mod $p$ coefficients, Ganatra's cyclic open-closed map is compatible with a certain $\mathbb{Z}/p$-equivariant open-closed map under the natural $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin type comparison map for Hochschild homology. Along with the proof, this paper gives a new homotopy theoretic framework for studying open-closed maps in symplectic topology. These will be used in an upcoming work \cite{Che} to study mod $p$ equivariant enumerative invariants such as the Quantum Steenrod operations. The main insights of this paper are: 1) a $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin comparison result for ($\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$-) cyclic objects, 2) a new construction of the open-closed map using operadic Floer theory of \cite{AGV}, which gives rise to a new interpretation of its `$S^1$-equivariant' property, and 3) comparison of the new construction with its classical counterpart.

Abstract:We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Abstract:Categories of polymorphic lenses in computer science, and of open games in compositional game theory, have a curious structure that is reminiscent of compact closed categories, but differs in some crucial ways. Specifically they have a family of morphisms that behave like the counits of a compact closed category, but have no corresponding units; and they have a `partial' duality that behaves like transposition in a compact closed category when it is defined. We axiomatise this structure, which we refer to as a `teleological category'. We precisely define a diagrammatic language suitable for these categories, and prove a coherence theorem for them. This underpins the use of diagrammatic reasoning in compositional game theory, which has previously been used only informally.
On the algebraic characterization of the category of 3-dimensional cobordisms

Abstract:It is proved in \cite{BP} (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1108.2717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1108.2717">arXiv:1108.2717</a>) that the category of relative 3-dimensional cobordisms $\cal Cob^{2+1}$ is equivalent to the universal algebraic category $\overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$ generated by a Hopf algebra object. A different algebraic category $\overline{\cal Alg}$ generated by a Hopf algebra object is defined in \cite{AS} and it conjectured to be equivalent to $\cal Cob^{2+1}$ as well. We prove that there exists a functor $\overline{\cal Alg}\to \overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$, and use it to present an alternative set of axioms for $\overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$.

Abstract:We compute the stable cohomology groups of the mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces with one boundary, with twisted coefficients given by the rational homology of the unit tangent bundles of the surfaces. These coefficients define a covariant functor over the classical category associated to mapping class groups, rather than a contravariant one, and are thus out of the scope of the traditional framework to study twisted cohomological stability. A remarkable property is that the computed stable twisted cohomology is not free as a module over the stable cohomology algebra with constant rational coefficients. For comparison, we also compute the stable cohomology group with coefficients in the first rational cohomology of the unit tangent bundle of the surface, which fits into the traditional framework.

Abstract:Coboundary expansion (with $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients), and variations on it, have been the focus of intensive research in the last two decades. It was used to study random complexes, property testing, and above all Gromov's topological overlapping property. In part I of this paper, we extended the notion of coboundary expansion (and its variations) to cochains with permutation coefficients, equipped with the normalized Hamming distance. We showed that this gives a unified language for studying covering stability of complexes, as well as stability of group homomorphisms -- a topic that drew a lot of attention in recent years. In this part, we extend the theory to the permutation coefficients setting. This gives some new results, even for $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients, opens several new directions of research, and suggests a pattern to proving the existence of non-sofic groups. Along the way, we solve the dimension $2$ case of a problem of Gromov, exhibiting a family of bounded degree coboundary expanders with $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients.

Abstract:We prove that every open-closed homotopy algebra, introduced by Kajiura and Stasheff (arXiv: archive/0410291), naturally gives rise to an open-closed version of Hochschild cochain complex whose cohomology admits a canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structure. We also develop the open-closed brace relations, provide a concise description of OCHAs, and establish an A-infinity structure that extends the open-closed Hochschild differential.

Structured and Decorated Cospans from the Viewpoint of Double Category Theory

Abstract:Structured and decorated cospans are broadly applicable frameworks for building bicategories or double categories of open systems. We streamline and generalize these frameworks using central concepts of double category theory. We show that, under mild hypotheses, double categories of structured cospans are cocartesian (have finite double-categorical coproducts) and are equipments. The proofs are simple as they utilize appropriate double-categorical universal properties. Maps between double categories of structured cospans are studied from the same perspective. We then give a new construction of the double category of decorated cospans using the recently introduced double Grothendieck construction. Besides its conceptual value, this reconstruction leads to a natural generalization of decorated cospans, which we illustrate through an example motivated by statistical theories and other theories of processes.

Open Gromov-Witten invariants from the Fukaya category

Abstract:This paper proposes a framework to show that the Fukaya category of a symplectic manifold $X$ determines the open Gromov-Witten invariants of Lagrangians $L \subset X$. We associate to an object in an $A_\infty$-category an extension of the negative cyclic homology, called \emph{relative cyclic homology}. We extend the Getzler-Gauss-Manin connection to relative cyclic homology. Then, we construct (under simplifying technical assumptions) a relative cyclic open-closed map, which maps the relative cyclic homology of a Lagrangian $L$ in the Fukaya category of a symplectic manifold $X$ to the $S^1$-equivariant relative quantum homology of $(X,L)$. Relative quantum homology is the dual to the relative quantum cohomology constructed by Solomon-Tukachinsky. This is an extension of quantum cohomology, and comes equipped with a connection extending the quantum connection. We prove that the relative open-closed map respects connections. As an application of this framework, we show, assuming a construction of the relative cyclic open-closed map in a broader technical setup, that the Fukaya category of a Calabi-Yau variety determines the open Gromov-Witten invariants with one interior marked point for any null-homologous Lagrangian brane.
