Abstract:This paper is a survey of our previous works on open-closed homotopy algebras, together with geometrical background, especially in terms of compactifications of configuration spaces (one of Fred's specialities) of Riemann surfaces, structures on loop spaces, etc. We newly present Merkulov's geometric A_infty-structure [Internat. Math. Res. Notices (1999) 153--164, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0001007" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0001007">arXiv:math/0001007</a>] as a special example of an OCHA. We also recall the relation of open-closed homotopy algebras to various aspects of deformation theory.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about how to construct and understand the homotopy algebraic structures of open - closed strings (Open - Closed Homotopy Algebras, OCHAs). Specifically, the authors hope to explore and explain the geometric background behind OCHAs, especially aspects related to the compactification of the configuration spaces of Riemann surfaces, structures on loop spaces, etc. In addition, they also aim to show the relationship between OCHAs and various aspects of deformation theory, and introduce Merkulov's geometric A∞ - structure as a special example of OCHA.
### Core of the problem
1. **Definition and construction of OCHA**: One of the main goals of the paper is to define a new algebraic structure - the open - closed string homotopy algebra (OCHA), which combines the characteristics of L∞ - algebras and A∞ - algebras.
2. **Geometric background**: Explore the connection between OCHA and the compactification of the configuration spaces of Riemann surfaces, especially how to understand the structure of OCHA through these geometric objects.
3. **Deformation theory**: Study the application of OCHA in deformation theory, especially how it provides a general deformation scheme for an open - string structure (A∞ - algebra) through a closed - string (L∞ - algebra).
4. **Special example**: Introduce Merkulov's geometric A∞ - structure as a special case of OCHA to further enrich the understanding of OCHA.
### Formula summary
OCHA consists of two components: \(H_c\) and \(H_o\), corresponding to closed strings and open strings respectively. Its core structure can be represented as follows:
- \(H = H_c\oplus H_o\)
- There is an L∞ - structure on \(H_c\), that is, a series of multilinear maps \(l_k : H_c^{\otimes k}\to H_c\) satisfying:
\[
\sum_{\sigma\in S_{k + l = n}}\pm l_1(l_k(c_{\sigma(1)}, \dots, c_{\sigma(k)}), c_{\sigma(k + 1)}, \dots, c_{\sigma(n)}) = 0
\]
- There is an A∞ - structure on \(H_o\), that is, a series of multilinear maps \(m_k : H_o^{\otimes k}\to H_o\) satisfying:
\[
\sum_{k + l = n + 1}\sum_{i = 1}^k\pm m_k(o_1, \dots, o_{i - 1}, m_l(o_i, \dots, o_{i + l - 1}), o_{i + l}, \dots, o_n) = 0
\]
In addition, OCHA also includes operations \(n_{k, l}:(H_c)^{\otimes k}\otimes(H_o)^{\otimes l}\to H_o\) that satisfy specific homotopy conditions.
Through these structures, the paper not only provides a new algebraic framework, but also reveals its important applications in string field theory and deformation theory.
