Abstract:An infrared imaging bolometer diagnostic has been upgraded recently to be adapted for the complications of the signal-to-noise ratio arising from the low level of plasma radiation and high reflectivity of low energy photon (<6.2 eV). It utilizes a platinum foil, blackened on both sides with graphite spray, as the bolometer detector. The advantage of the blackened foil is the light absorption extending into the infrared. After a careful calibration of the foil, the incident power density distribution on the foil is determined by solving the heat diffusion equation with a numerical technique. The local plasma radiated power density is reconstructed with a minimum fisher information regularization method by assuming plasma emission toroidal symmetry. Comparisons of the results and the profiles measured by an ordinary bolometric detector demonstrate that this method is good enough to provide the plasma radiated power pattern. The typical plasma radiated power density distribution before and after high mode (H-mode) transition is firstly reconstructed with the infrared imaging bolometer. Moreover, during supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI), an enhanced radiation region is observed at the edge of the plasma.
Increased accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio through recent improvements in Infra-Red Video Bolometer fabrication and calibration

Abstract:The Infra-Red Video Bolometer (IRVB) is a diagnostic equipped with an infra-red camera that measures the total radiated power in thousands of LOSs within a large field of view (FOV). Recently validated in MAST-U, it offers a high spatial resolution map of the radiated power in the divertor region, where large gradients are expected. The IRVB's sensing element comprises a thin layer of high Z absorbing material, typically Platinum, usually coated with Carbon to reduce reflections. It is here explored the possibility of using a relatively inert material like Titanium, that can be produced in layers up to 1mum compared to 2.5mum for Pt, and then coat it with Pt of the desired thickness (0.3mum per side here) and Carbon. This leads to a higher temperature signal (2 to 3 times), and better spatial resolution (about 4 times), resulting in higher accuracy in the measured power. This assembly is also expected to improve foil uniformity, as the Pt layer is obtained via deposition rather than mechanical processes. Given its multi-material composition, measuring the thermal properties of the foil assembly is vital. Various methods using a calibrated laser as a heat source have been developed, analysing the temperature profile shape or fitting the calculated laser power for different intensities and frequencies. It is here presented a simpler approach, that relies on analysing the separate components of the foil heat equation for a single laser exposure in a given area. This can then be iterated over the entire foil to capture local deviations.

Abstract:An infrared imaging bolometer has been developed in HL-2A tokamak with 14 × 14 bolometer pixels and a NEPD of 1.65W/rn 2 for this diagnostic. good qualitative agreement is observed by comparison of the bolometric result with conventional bolometric data and the comparison of the bolometric image with a corresponding image from a CCD camera for visible light. The next step in this research is to carefully calibrate to get more accurate data. the data from the infrared imaging bolometer will then be used to attempt the two-dimensional tomography of plasma radiation including the core and X-point region with three-dimensional treatment of detector geometry.
Cytokine-induced fever in obese ( fa / fa ) and lean ( Fa / Fa ) Zucker rats

Physiol. 44): R1353–R1357, 1998.—In earlier work, we reported that genetically obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats exhibited significantly greater anorexia than did lean (Fa/Fa) Zucker rats to intracerebroventricular infusion of interleukin (IL)-1b. Here, we investigated the fever response of obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/Fa) Zucker rats to intracerebroventricular microinfusion of IL-1b as well as to the following other cytokines: IL-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a). Core body temperature was monitored by a radiotelemetry system in freely moving rats. The results show that 1) both IL-1b and IL-6 induce fevers in obese and lean rats; 2) IL-1b induces a significantly higher fever response in obese rats than it does in lean rats; 3) IL-6 induces a significantly higher fever response in lean rats than it does in obese rats; 4) IL-2 induces a moderate fever response in lean but not obese rats; 5) TNF-a induces a similar fever response in obese and lean rats; and 6) the fevers induced by each effective cytokine have different time courses. Thus obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/Fa) Zucker rats show differential responsiveness to the intracerebroventricular microinfusion of various classes of cytokines. This suggests that genetic obesity in the fa/fa Zucker rat is associated with differential cytokine action on thermoregulatory mechanisms.
First quality-of-life data of a sequential dose-dense regimen in advanced ovarian cancer: A multicenter phase II study of the Northeastern German Society of Gynecological Oncology.

Abstract:5071 Background: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of a sequential dose dense schedule of carboplatin and paclitaxel on quality of life (QoL). METHODS In this multicenter phase II trial patients with advanced ovarian cancer received four cycles of carboplatin followed by 12 cycles of weekly paclitaxel after primary radical surgery (abstr. 5533; J Clin Oncol 2007). QoL (QLQ-C30; QLQ-Ov28) was analyzed regarding the effect of carboplatin and paclitaxel separately at end of treatment (EOT) and 6, 12, and 24 months later. RESULTS Overall 87 out of 104 eligible patients (84%) participated for at least one QoL-assessment during the treatment, but only 24 patients did likewise 2 years after EOT. At baseline all QLQ-C30 scales and symptoms were significantly worse on average than age adjusted expected values of the general population. From then QoL improved in general. During chemotherapy with paclitaxel most functioning scales and symptoms worsened slightly but not significantly. But peripheral neuropathy and chemo side-effects increased with clinically important differences. After EOT most QoL scores were similar wih those of general population, but physical functioning and fatigue were worse, sexual functioning remained very low. Worries about future health and peripheral neuropathy were rated problematic for some patients. CONCLUSIONS QoL was generally favorable and was mainly affected by the paclitaxel weekly schedule. During chemotherapy and after EOT QoL was improved. Therefore the QoL data support a dose dense regimen.

Abstract:Monolithic, millimeter wave "system-on-chip" technology has been employed in chip heterodyne radiometers in a newly developed Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system on the DIII-D tokamak for 2D electron temperature and fluctuation diagnostics. The system employs 20 horn-waveguide receiver modules each with customized W-band (75-110 GHz) monolithic microwave integrated circuit chips comprising a W-band low noise amplifier, a balanced mixer, a ×2 local oscillator (LO) frequency doubler, and two intermediate frequency amplifier stages in each module. Compared to previous quasi-optical ECEI arrays with Schottky mixer diodes mounted on planar antennas, the upgraded W-band array exhibits >30 dB additional gain and 20× improvement in noise temperature; an internal eight times multiplier chain is used to provide LO coupling, thereby eliminating the need for quasi-optical coupling. The horn-waveguide shielding housing avoids out-of-band noise interference on each module. The upgraded ECEI system plays an important role for absolute electron temperature and fluctuation measurements for edge and core region transport physics studies. An F-band receiver chip (up to 140 GHz) is under development for additional fusion facilities with a higher toroidal magnetic field. Visualization diagnostics provide multi-scale and multi-dimensional data in plasma profile evolution. A significant aspect of imaging measurement is focusing on artificial intelligence for science applications.
Developing a robust sensor for infrared imaging bolometers

Abstract:A new type of large area sensor for infrared imaging bolometers has been developed. It replaces the thin and fragile free-standing metal foils, which typically have been used, with a multi-layer coated sapphire (or diamond) substrate. Sapphire is transparent to mid-infrared wavelengths, is robust against transients, and can be thick enough to even be the vacuum window. The primary radiation absorber is still a thin deposited metal layer, but now it is partially insulated from the supporting sapphire substrate by a black (carbon-based) layer, which also acts as a blackbody remitter. Test results indicate 6× more noise equivalent power density (estimated NEPD = 23 W/m2 at 5 ms camera exposure time, foil temperature decay time 60 ms) for a 2 μm gold-coated sapphire disk compared to estimated NEP = 4 W/m2 at 1.8 ms exposure time, with foil decay time 420 ms, for a nominal 2.5 μm thick platinum-free-standing foil.

Abstract:To control and optimize the power of the SPARC tokamak, we require information on the total radiated power of the plasma and its 2D and 3D spatial distribution. The SPARC bolometry diagnostic is being designed and built to measure the radiated power for controlling power balance, investigating the dissipation capabilities of various divertor concepts, and measuring the efficacy of the disruption thermal load mitigation. Proven resistive bolometer sensor technology will be used, with 248 lines of sight integrated into pinhole cameras in 20 different locations. This diversity of views will allow the bolometers to view the core, divertor, and particularly X-points of the plasma with high resolution. 14 of these camera locations are dedicated to 2D equilibrium radiated power, while the remaining six locations are designed to measure 3D radiated energy during disruptions. The bolometer sensor holders, pinhole camera boxes, and cabling have been designed to survive the high neutron flux (but low fluence) and up to 400 °C temperatures seen during operation and vacuum bake. The resistive bolometer sensors use Au absorbers with an Al heat conduction layer and C anti-reflective layer. These sensor chips are wire-bonded to an AlN circuit board, both of which are held inside a custom AlN and stainless steel bolometer holder. Design and optimization of the pinhole camera lines of sight are performed using Cherab. This work details the current state of the design of the SPARC bolometry diagnostic and its interfaces, as well as ongoing work to validate the design.
Superconductor based, tomographic, neutron diagnostics for fusion power monitoring

Abstract:We propose a scalable system of compact, superconducting neutron monitors, which can be embedded in any existing cryogenic infrastructure of a fusion system. The pixel-based nature of the detectors allows them to be placed at intervals following the circumference of a cooled zone, e.g., a field coil, thus allowing for a tomographic measurement of the neutron flux surrounding the plasma. An early stage prototype of the superconducting bolometer is described, and the key results of a previous feasibility study of this prototype performed with cold neutrons are summarized. The bolometer can be adapted for use with fast neutrons by altering the composition and geometry of the neutron-to-heat conversion layer. This paper describes the initial feasibility considerations for implementation in a superconducting tokamak. The sensor is based on a high-temperature superconductor, making it possible to select the operation temperature in the range 1-90 K. Neutron flux numbers were found using the ITER MCNP reference model, and these were embedded in a TOPAS model to find the expected signal measured by the bolometer at the position of a toroidal field coil. The results at the coil position indicate suitable operation levels in terms of the magnitude of the measured signal, with a measurable signal of several ohm, which is much smaller than the saturation energy of the detector. Radiation hardness is estimated and found to be on the order of at least 40 years for the relevant radiation levels. The upcoming investigation activities of the project are described for both radiation testing and analytical modeling.

Abstract:System-on-chip millimeter wave integrated circuit technology is used on the two-dimensional millimeter-wave imaging reflectometer (MIR) upgrade for density fluctuation imaging on the DIII-D tokamak fusion plasma. Customized CMOS chips have been successfully developed for the transmitter module and receiver module array, covering the 55-75 GHz working band. The transmitter module has the capability of simultaneously launching eight tunable probe frequencies (>0 dBm output power each). The receiver enclosure contains 12 receiver modules in two vertical lines. The quasi-optical local oscillator coupling of previous MIR systems has been replaced with an internal active frequency multiplier chain for improved local oscillator power delivery and flexible installation in a narrow space together with improved shielding against electromagnetic interference. The 55-75 GHz low noise amplifier, used between the receiver antenna and the first-stage mixer, significantly improves module sensitivity and suppresses electronics noise. The receiver module has a 20 dB gain improvement compared with the mini-lens approach and better than -75 dBm sensitivity, and its electronics noise temperature has been reduced from 55 000 K down to 11 200 K. The V-band MIR system is developed for co-located multi-field investigation of MHD-scale fluctuations in the pedestal region with W-band electron cyclotron emission imaging on DIII-D tokamak.

Abstract:Due to the increasing demands for active plasma control operations, in situ diagnostics are highly sought after. Tungsten plasma-facing components have been utilized in the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) lower divertor since the 2023 campaign. Plasma radiation is a key parameter for plasma control, especially in radiation front control experiments. Therefore, the KSTAR infra-red video bolometer (IRVB) needs to be reconfigured into an in situ data streaming diagnostic. This requires comprehensive changes in both infra-red camera control and data analysis compared to the previous system. To ensure the stability of the reconfigured system, functional parts are grouped and separated into individual processes to protect camera acquisitions from errors in other processes. In addition, to enhance the speed of data streaming analysis, the analysis code has been optimized and converted into graphics processing unit (GPU) code. Besides the data streaming analysis, the system is also designed to support post-shot analysis with the entire frame data for the same shot to address frame drop issues encountered during data streaming. Radiation front control experiments with N2 gas seeding are successful results of the data streaming IRVB for its commissioning. This paper focuses on the development of the data streaming IRVB system.

Abstract:Following successful campaigns on the compact high field spherical tokamak ST40, resistive gold foil bolometers have now been installed to measure the radiated power profile. Positioned on the midplane, two bolometer cameras offer perspectives of the horizontal and vertical planes, while the third camera, situated above the midplane, provides a vertical view of the top divertor plates, including the X-point and the strike points. These cameras use a commercial off-the-shelf data acquisition platform with modules specifically designed for bolometers in a Wheatstone bridge configuration, providing both phase sensitive detection and in situ calibration. This paper presents an overview of the design and functionality of all three cameras and the commissioning of the horizontal plane camera. The commissioning of the horizontal camera shows data from a range of plasma pulses, presenting a positive correlation between the relative profiles measured from the bolometer camera and an absolute extreme ultraviolet diode camera viewing along similar lines of sight.

Abstract:Transcriptional regulation of small intestinal gene expression controls plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels, which are major determinants of metabolic diseases. GATA4, a zinc finger domain transcription factor, is critical for jejunal identity, and intestinal GATA4 deficiency leads to a jejunoileal transition. Although intestinal GATA4 ablation is known to misregulate jejunal gene expression, its pathophysiological impact on various components of metabolic syndrome remains unknown. Here, we used intestine-specific GATA4 knockout (GATA4iKO) mice to dissect the contribution of GATA4 on obesity development. We challenged adult GATA4iKO mice and control littermates with a Western-type diet (WTD) for 20 wk. Our findings show that WTD-fed GATA4iKO mice are resistant to diet-induced obesity. Accordingly, plasma TG and TC levels are markedly decreased. Intestinal lipid absorption in GATA4iKO mice was strongly reduced, whereas luminal lipolysis was unaffected. GATA4iKO mice displayed a greater glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) release on normal chow and even after long-term challenge with WTD remained glucose sensitive. In summary, our findings show that the absence of intestinal GATA4 has a beneficial effect on decreasing intestinal lipid absorption causing resistance to hyperlipidemia and obesity. In addition, we show that increased GLP-1 release in GATA4iKO mice decreases the risk for development of insulin resistance.

Abstract:A vacuum vessel (VV) of a tokamak fusion reactor like the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) consists the first confinement barrier that includes the largest amount of radioactive materials such as tritium and activation products. The ingress of coolant event (ICE) is a design basis event in the ITER where water is used as the coolant. The loss of vacuum event (LOVA) is also considered as an independent design basis event. Based on the results of ICE and LOVA preliminary experiments, an integrated in-vessel thermofluid test is being planned and conceptual design of the facility is in progress. The main objectives of the integrated test are to investigate the consequences of possible interaction of the ICE and the LOVA and to validate the analytical model of thermofluid events in the VV of the fusion reactor. This paper introduces a conceptual design of the integrated test facility and a testing plan.

Abstract:Options for implementing the IR thermography diagnostic system in a TRT facility are considered. Two variants of the optical scheme for measuring the temperature of the first wall and divertor targets are proposed: a wide-angle system combined with two divertor channels and a four-channel viewing system. The optical resolution of both systems and the levels of the collected signal are numerically simulated. On the basis of the calculations performed, conclusions are drawn about the compliance of the systems with the requirements for measuring the temperature of TRT plasma-facing elements. The sources of the temperature measurement error are considered, and the error caused by the reflection of radiation from structural plasma-facing elements by the surface under study is estimated. Calibration issues for IR thermography diagnostics are also discussed.

Abstract:Infra-red (IR) thermography is an essential diagnostic tool for understanding the edge plasma behavior in fusion devices. In this work, we present a new in-house numerical tool, Functional Analysis of Heat Flux (FAHF), for IR thermographic inversion on Tokamak Energy's spherical tokamak (ST40). FAHF, written in Python, is designed for multi-2D thermographic inversions by solving the heat conduction equation within the divertor tiles using the finite difference method, and an explicit time stepping scheme. Utilising IR camera data with the highest available effective spatial resolution, FAHF calculates the plasma perpendicular heat flux density on the divertor tile surfaces -- a crucial quantity for edge plasma analysis. The tool's internal numerics is first verified through formal time and space convergence analyses, and further corroborated by an energy balance assessment. Although FAHF demonstrates significant sensitivity to user-selected spatial resolution, precise heat flux values are recoverable by ensuring a sufficiently high resolution. Implications for the optimal resolution of both the code and the diagnostic system are discussed. Finally, FAHF's model and geometry simplifications are confirmed to be accurate within 10%, based on comparison with COMSOL Multiphysics simulations. As such, FAHF is proven to be a precise and accurate tool for IR thermographic inversions in ST40.

Abstract:Monolithic, millimeter-wave "system-on-chip" (SoC) technology has been employed in heterodyne receiver integrated circuit radiometers in a newly developed Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system on the DIII-D tokamak for 2D electron temperature profile and fluctuation evolution diagnostics. A prototype module operating in the E-band (72 GHz-80 GHz) was first employed in a 2 × 10 element array that demonstrated significant improvements over the previous quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer arrays during the 2018 operational campaign of the DIII-D tokamak. For compatibility with International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor relevant scenarios on DIII-D, the SoC ECEI system was upgraded with 20 horn-waveguide receiver modules. Each individual module contains a University of California Davis designed W-band (75 GHz-110 GHz) receiver die that integrates a broadband low noise amplifier, a double balanced down-converting mixer, and a ×4 multiplier on the local oscillator (LO) chain. A ×2 multiplier and two IF amplifiers are packaged and selected to further boost the signal strength and downconvert the signal frequency. The upgraded W-band array exhibits >30 dB additional gain and 20× improvement in noise temperature compared with the previous Schottky diode radio frequency mixer input systems; an internal 8 times multiplier chain is used to bring down the LO frequency below 12 GHz, thereby obviating the need for a large aperture for quasi-optical LO coupling and replacing it with coaxial connectors. Horn-waveguide shielding housing avoids out-of-band noise interference on each individual module. Abstract:On present-day magnetic-confinement fusion experiments, the performance of multi-channel bolometer diagnostics has typically evolved over time through experience with earlier versions of the diagnostic and experimental results obtained. For future large-scale fusion experiments and reactors, it is necessary to be able to predict the performance as a function of design decisions and constraints. A methodology has been developed to predict the accuracy with which the volume-integrated total radiated power can be estimated from the measurements by a resistive bolometer diagnostic, considering, in particular, its line-of-sight geometry, étendues of individual lines of sight, bolometer-sensor characteristics, and the expected noise level that can be obtained with its electronics and signal chain. The methodology depends on a number of assumptions in order to arrive at analytical expressions but does not restrict the final implementation of data-processing of the diagnostic measurements. The methodology allows us to predict the performance in terms of accuracy, total-radiated power level, and frequency or time resolution and to optimize bolometer-sensor characteristics for a set of performance requirements. This is illustrated for the bolometer diagnostic that is being designed for the ITER experiment. The reasonableness, consequences, and limitations of the assumptions are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Near ion-cyclotron frequency (fci) fluctuations, such as those originating from Global and Compressional Alfvén Eigenmodes (GAEs/CAEs), are expected to be present in future fusion reactors but are not well understood due to the limited availability of core measurements in present-day tokamaks. The measurement bandwidth of the Radial Interferometer-Polarimeter (RIP) diagnostic has been upgraded from 1 to 5 MHz to detect these fluctuations in DIII-D. RIP adopts the three-wave technique for simultaneous polarimetric and interferometric measurements. Solid-state microwave sources operating at 650 GHz are used as probe beams and provide 5 MHz bandwidth for both polarimetric and interferometric measurements. Bandwidths of related hardware, including mixer amplifier, signal cable, and digital phase demodulator, are increased correspondingly. Measurement noise is minimized by reducing the time delay between reference and probe signals to nanosecond level and employing correlation-based techniques. Using the upgraded diagnostic, CAE/GAE-like bursting fluctuations are observed in neutral-beam heated plasmas with toroidal magnetic field Bφ ≈ 1 T. Current upgrades being undertaken would enable the evaluation of toroidal mode number for these modes. This work opens the possibility of better understanding near ion-cyclotron frequency fluctuations in fusion relevant plasmas.
