Abstract:Barnette's conjecture asserts that every cubic $3$-connected plane bipartite graph is hamiltonian. Although, in general, the problem is still open, some partial results are known. In particular, let us call a face of a plane graph big (small) if it has at least six edges (it has four edges, respectively). Goodey proved for a $3$-connected bipartite cubic plane graph $P$, that if all big faces in $P$ have exactly six edges, then $P$ is hamiltonian. In this paper we prove that the same is true under the condition that no face in $P$ has more than four big neighbours. We also prove, that if each vertex in $P$ is incident both with a small and a big face, then~$P$ has at least $2^{k}$ different Hamilton cycles, where $k = \left\lceil\frac{|B|-2}{4\Delta(B) - 7}\right\rceil$, $|B|$ is the number of big faces in $P$ and $\Delta(B)$ is the maximum size of faces in $P$. 15 pages

Another Hamiltonian Cycle in Bipartite Pfaffian Graphs

Abstract:Finding a Hamiltonian cycle in a given graph is computationally challenging, and in general remains so even when one is further given one Hamiltonian cycle in the graph and asked to find another. In fact, no significantly faster algorithms are known for finding another Hamiltonian cycle than for finding a first one even in the setting where another Hamiltonian cycle is structurally guaranteed to exist, such as for odd-degree graphs. We identify a graph class -- the bipartite Pfaffian graphs of minimum degree three -- where it is NP-complete to decide whether a given graph in the class is Hamiltonian, but when presented with a Hamiltonian cycle as part of the input, another Hamiltonian cycle can be found efficiently. We prove that Thomason's lollipop method~[Ann.~Discrete Math.,~1978], a well-known algorithm for finding another Hamiltonian cycle, runs in a linear number of steps in cubic bipartite Pfaffian graphs. This was conjectured for cubic bipartite planar graphs by Haddadan [MSc~thesis,~Waterloo,~2015]; in contrast, examples are known of both cubic bipartite graphs and cubic planar graphs where the lollipop method takes exponential time. Beyond the lollipop method, we address a slightly more general graph class and present two algorithms, one running in linear-time and one operating in logarithmic space, that take as input (i) a bipartite Pfaffian graph $G$ of minimum degree three, (ii) a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ in $G$, and (iii) an edge $e$ in $H$, and output at least three other Hamiltonian cycles through the edge $e$ in $G$. We also present further improved algorithms for finding optimal traveling salesperson tours and counting Hamiltonian cycles in bipartite planar graphs with running times that are not known to hold in general planar graphs.

Abstract:We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.

Abstract:In this work we present an algorithm with which any arbitrary cubic planar map may be constructed through successive edge insertion while simultaneously constructing a set of proper edge labels and Hamiltonian cycles for each configuration. We present a publicly available Python implementation of this algorithm, and discuss both theoretical and numerical support for its validity, with reference to the well-known Four Colour Theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, the perturbation of a class of cubic Hamiltonian systems is considered. Using Abelian integral, we prove that there exists a neighborhood of the center where the system has at most two limit cycles for arbitrary polynomial perturbation of degree three or four, and at most four limit cycles for arbitrary polynomial perturbation of degree five or six, respectively, which can be reached.

Abstract:Hammack and Livesay introduced a new graph operation G((k)) for a graph G, which they called the kth inner power of G. A graph G is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle. Abstract:We prove that if Cay(G;S) is a connected Cayley graph with n vertices, and the prime factorization of n is very small, then Cay(G;S) has a hamiltonian cycle. Abstract:The hamiltonian problem is an important topic in structural graph theory, which is closely related to Four Color Problem. Hence lots of graph scholars are dedicated to this topic. There are many authors working for finding some sufficient conditions for hamiltonian property of graphs. Let G be a claw-free graph with n vertices and δ(G)≥3. In this paper, we show that if G has an induced cycle of length more than (4n – 2δ(G)–4)(δ(G)+2)−1, then G is hamiltonian. The result is best possible if δG is 3 or 4.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian path (a Hamiltonian cycle) in a graph is a path (a cycle, respectively) that traverses all of its vertices. The problems of deciding their existence in an input graph are well-known to be NP-complete, in fact, they belong to the first problems shown to be computationally hard when the theory of NP-completeness was being developed. A lot of research has been devoted to the complexity of Hamiltonian path and Hamiltonian cycle problems for special graph classes, yet only a handful of positive results are known. The complexities of both of these problems have been open even for $4K_1$-free graphs, i.e., graphs of independence number at most $3$. We answer this question in the general setting of graphs of bounded independence number.

Abstract:A 3-connected cubic graph is cyclically 4-connected if it has at least n≥8 vertices and when removal of a set of three edges results in a disconnected graph, only one component has cycles. By introducing the notion of cycle spread to quantify the distance between pairs of edges, we get a new characterization of cyclically 4-connected graphs. Let Qn and Vn denote the ladder and Möbius ladder on n≥8 vertices, respectively. We prove that a 3-connected cubic graph G is cyclically 4-connected if and only if G is either the Petersen graph, Qn or Vn for n≥8 , or G is obtained from Q8 or Q10 by bridging pairs of edges with cycle spread at least (1,2) . The concept of cycle spread also naturally leads to methods for constructing cyclically k -connected cubic graphs from smaller ones, but for k≥5 the method is not exhaustive.

Abstract:For each pair of positive integers $(a,b)$ such that $a \geq 0$ and $b > 1$, the present paper provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Hamiltonian cycles visiting all the vertices of any $k$-dimensional grid $\{0,1\}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^k$ and whose associated Euclidean distance is equal to $\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$. Our solution extends previously stated results in fairy chess on the existence of closed Euclidean $(a,b)$-leapers tours for $2 \times 2 \times \cdots \times 2$ chessboards, where the (Euclidean) knight identifies the $(1,2)$-leaper.

Abstract:Barnette's Conjecture claims that all cubic, 3-connected, planar, bipartite graphs are Hamiltonian. We give a translation of this conjecture into the matching-theoretic setting. This allows us to relax the requirement of planarity to give the equivalent conjecture that all cubic, 3-connected, Pfaffian, bipartite graphs are Hamiltonian. A graph, other than the path of length three, is a brace if it is bipartite and any two disjoint edges are part of a perfect matching. Our perspective allows us to observe that Barnette's Conjecture can be reduced to cubic, planar braces. We show a similar reduction to braces for cubic, 3-connected, bipartite graphs regarding four stronger versions of Hamiltonicity. Note that in these cases we do not need planarity. As a practical application of these results, we provide some supplements to a generation procedure for cubic, 3-connected, planar, bipartite graphs discovered by Holton et al. [Hamiltonian Cycles in Cubic 3-Connected Bipartite Planar Graphs, JCTB, 1985]. These allow us to check whether a graph we generated is a brace.

Abstract:We explore to what extent the properties of a Gauss diagram are affected by the choice of its Hamiltonian cycle. We present an example of a realizable Gauss diagram and an unrealizable Gauss diagram that differ only by a choice of the Hamiltonian cycle. We present an example of two Gauss diagrams that correspond to different curves and differ only by a choice of the Hamiltonian cycle. We prove that a certain natural type of change of the Hamiltonian cycle preserves the realizability of the Gauss diagram.

Abstract:The toughness of a noncomplete graph $G$ is the maximum real number $t$ such that the ratio of $|S|$ to the number of components of $G-S$ is at least $t$ for every cutset $S$ of $G$, and the toughness of a complete graph is defined to be $\infty$. Determining the toughness for a given graph is NP-hard. Chv\'{a}tal's toughness conjecture, stating that there exists a constant $t_0$ such that every graph with toughness at least $t_0$ is hamiltonian, is still open for general graphs. A graph is called $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free if it does not contain any induced subgraph isomorphic to $P_3\cup 2P_1$, the disjoint union of $P_3$ and two isolated vertices. In this paper, we confirm Chv\'{a}tal's toughness conjecture for $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free graphs by showing that every 7-tough $(P_3\cup 2P_1)$-free graph on at least three vertices is hamiltonian.

Abstract:In this series of papers, the primary goal is to enumerate Hamiltonian cycles (HC's) on the grid cylinder graphs $P_{m+1}\times C_n$, where $n$ is allowed to grow whilst $m$ is fixed. In Part~I, we studied the so-called non-contractible HC's. Here, in Part~II, we proceed further on to the contractible case. We propose two different novel characterizations of contractible HC's, from which we construct digraphs for enumerating the contractible HC's. Given the impression which the computational data for $m \leq 9$ convey, we conjecture that the asymptotic domination of the contractible HC's versus the non-contractible HC's, among the total number of HC's, depends on the parity of $m$.}

Abstract:A coalition in a graph $G$ with vertex set $V$ consists of two disjoint sets $V_1, V_2\subset V$ such that neither $V_1$ nor $V_2$ is a dominating set, but the union $V_1\cup V_2$ is a dominating set in $G$. A partition of graph vertices is called a coalition partition $\mathcal{P}$ if every non-dominating set of $\mathcal{P}$ is a member of a coalition and every dominating set is a single-vertex set. The coalition number $C(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum cardinality of its coalition partition. It is known that for cubic graphs $C(G)\le 9$. The existence of cubic graphs with the maximal coalition number is an unsolved problem. In this paper, an infinite family of cubic graphs satisfying $C(G)=9$ is constructed.
