Abstract:A cactus is a connected graph in which any two cycles have at most one common vertex. We determine the unique graph that maximizes the distance spectral radius over all cacti with fixed numbers of vertices and cycles, and thus prove a conjecture on the distance spectral radius of cacti in [S.S. Bose, M. Nath, S. Paul, On the distance spectral radius of cacti, Linear Algebra Appl. 437 (2012) 2128--2141]. We prove the result in the context of hypertrees.

Abstract:A 2-tone coloring of a graph assigns two distinct colors to each vertex with the restriction that adjacent vertices have no common colors, and vertices at distance two have at most one common color. The 2-tone chromatic number of a graph is the minimum number of colors in any 2-tone coloring. A cactus graph has every block a cycle or edge. We determine the 2-tone chromatic number of all cactus graphs with maximum degree Δ≠6 . When Δ=6 , we determine the 2-tone chromatic number of all cactus graphs that are triangle-free and those with circumference at most 8.

Abstract:Cactus doodles are combinatorial/geometric objects that are related to cactus groups in the same way as knots are related to braids. We define them in terms of local moves on plane curves, show that they can be obtained from elements of the cactus group by a "closing" procedure and establish some of their basic properties.

Abstract:A cactus is a connected graph in which each edge is contained in at most one cycle. We generalize the concept of cactus graphs, i.e., a k -cactus is a connected graph in which each edge is contained in at most k cycles where k≥1 . It is well known that every cactus with n vertices has at most ⌊32(n−1)⌋ edges. Inspired by it, we attempt to establish analogous upper bounds for general k -cactus graphs. In this paper, we first characterize k -cactus graphs for 2≤k≤4 based on the block decompositions. Subsequently, we give tight upper bounds on their sizes. Moreover, the corresponding extremal graphs are also characterized. However, for larger k , this extremal problem remains unsolved. Besides, we prove that every 2-connected k -cactus ( k≥1 ) with n vertices has at most n+k−1 edges, and the bound is tight if n≥k+2 .

Abstract:A cactus graph is a connected graph in which every block is either an edge or a cycle. In this paper, we consider several problems of graph theory and developed optimal algorithms to solve such problems on cactus graphs. The running time of these algorithms is O(n), where n is the total number of vertices of the graph. The cactus graph has many applications in real life problems, especially in radio communication system.

Abstract:Four Color Theorem implies that the independence number of every planar graph is at least n/4 . A cactus graph is a connected planar graph whose block is either an edge or a cycle. In this paper, the lower bound for independence number of cactus graphs is improved to ⌈n/3⌉ . Moreover, the maximum spectral radius of cactus graphs with fixed independence number is determined.

Abstract:We study the hat guessing game on graphs. In this game, a player is placed on each vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ and assigned a colored hat from $h(v)$ possible colors. Each player makes a deterministic guess on their hat color based on the colors assigned to the players on neighboring vertices, and the players win if at least one player correctly guesses his assigned color. If there exists a strategy that ensures at least one player guesses correctly for every possible assignment of colors, the game defined by $\langle G,h\rangle$ is called winning. The hat guessing number of $G$ is the largest integer $q$ so that if $h(v)=q$ for all $v\in G$ then $\langle G,h\rangle$ is winning. In this note, we determine whether $\langle G,h\rangle $ is winning for any $h$ whenever $G$ is a cycle, resolving a conjecture of Kokhas and Latyshev in the affirmative and extending it. We then use this result to determine the hat guessing number of every cactus graph, graphs in which every pair of cycles share at most one vertex.

Abstract:Cactus groups are currently attracting considerable interest from diverse mathematical communities. This work explores their relations to right-angled Coxeter groups and, in particular, twin groups and Mostovoy's Gauss diagram groups , which are better understood. Concretely, we construct an injective group 1-cocycle from to and show that (and its k -leaf generalizations) inject into . As a corollary, we solve the word problem for cactus groups, determine their torsion (which is only even) and center (which is trivial), and answer the same questions for pure cactus groups, . In addition, we yield a 1-relator presentation of the first non-abelian pure cactus group . Our tools come mainly from combinatorial group theory.

Multipacking and broadcast domination on cactus graph and its impact on hyperbolic graph

Abstract:For a graph $G$, $ mp(G) $ is the multipacking number, and $\gamma_b(G)$ is the broadcast domination number. It is known that $mp(G)\leq \gamma_b(G)$ and $\gamma_b(G)\leq 2mp(G)+3$ for any graph $G$, and it was shown that $\gamma_b(G)-mp(G)$ can be arbitrarily large for connected graphs. It is conjectured that $\gamma_b(G)\leq 2mp(G)$ for any general graph $G$. We show that, for any cactus graph $G$, $\gamma_b(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}mp(G)+\frac{11}{2}$. We also show that $\gamma_b(G)-mp(G)$ can be arbitrarily large for cactus graphs and asteroidal triple-free graphs by constructing an infinite family of cactus graphs which are also asteroidal triple-free graphs such that the ratio $\gamma_b(G)/mp(G)=4/3$, with $mp(G)$ arbitrarily large. This result shows that, for cactus graphs, the bound $\gamma_b(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}mp(G)+\frac{11}{2}$ cannot be improved to a bound in the form $\gamma_b(G)\leq c_1\cdot mp(G)+c_2$, for any constant $c_1<4/3$ and $c_2$. Moreover, we provide an $O(n)$-time algorithm to construct a multipacking of cactus graph $G$ of size at least $ \frac{2}{3}mp(G)-\frac{11}{3} $, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the graph $G$. The hyperbolicity of the cactus graph class is unbounded. For $0$-hyperbolic graphs, $mp(G)=\gamma_b(G)$. Moreover, $mp(G)=\gamma_b(G)$ holds for the strongly chordal graphs which is a subclass of $\frac{1}{2}$-hyperbolic graphs. Now it's a natural question: what is the minimum value of $\delta$, for which we can say that the difference $ \gamma_{b}(G) - mp(G) $ can be arbitrarily large for $\delta$-hyperbolic graphs? We show that the minimum value of $\delta$ is $\frac{1}{2}$ using a construction of an infinite family of cactus graphs with hyperbolicity $\frac{1}{2}$.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of -reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that the same is true when restricted to some other superclasses of cographs, including -sparse and -extendible graphs (both of which extend -reducible graphs). We also present complete lists of -sparse and -extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and ( s , 1)-polarity, where s is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of -reducible graphs, all the -sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs.

Abstract:Here we prove that Reed Conjecture is valid for {P5, Flag_Complement}-free graphs where FlagComplement is the complement of the Flag graph. Some of the known results follow as corollaries to our result. Reed conjecture is still open in general.
On the structure of a smallest counterexample and a new class verifying the 2-Decomposition Conjecture

Abstract:The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph $G$ with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which $G \setminus E(C)$ is disconnected for every cycle $C$, admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

On 4-critical t-perfect graphs

Abstract:It is an open question whether the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs is bounded by a constant. The largest known value for this parameter is 4, and the only example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph, due to Laurent and Seymour, is the complement of the line graph of the prism $\Pi$ (a graph is 4-critical if it has chromatic number 4 and all its proper induced subgraphs are 3-colorable). In this paper, we show a new example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph: the complement of the line graph of the 5-wheel $W_5$. Furthermore, we prove that these two examples are in fact the only 4-critical $t$-perfect graphs in the class of complements of line graphs. As a byproduct, an analogous and more general result is obtained for $h$-perfect graphs in this class. The class of $P_6$-free graphs is a proper superclass of complements of line graphs and appears as a natural candidate to further investigate the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs. We observe that a result of Randerath, Schiermeyer and Tewes implies that every $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graph is 4-colorable. Finally, we use results of Chudnovsky et al to show that $\overline{L(W_5)}$ and $\overline{L(\Pi)}$ are also the only 4-critical $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graphs.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:A balanced graph is a bipartite graph with no induced circuit of length 2 mod 4. These graphs arise in linear programming. We focus on graph-algebraic properties of balanced graphs to prove a complete classification of balanced Cayley graphs on abelian groups. Moreover, in Section 5 of this paper, we prove that there is no cubic balanced planar graph. Finally, some remarkable conjectures for balanced regular graphs are also presented.

Combinatorics of generic 5-degree polynomials

Abstract:We consider the space $P$ of generic complex 5-degree polynomials. Critical values of such polynomial, i.e. four points in the complex plane, either are vertices of a convex quadrangle $Q$, or vertices of a triangle $T$ with one point inside $T$. The inverse image of $Q$ is a tree-like connected structure of five ovals (a cactus). The inverse image of $T$ is also a cactus, but of four ovals. Transformations of cacti of the first type into cacti of the second type and vice versa allow one to represent the space $P$ as a ribbon bipartite graph of genus 3.

Integral Cayley graphs of symmetric groups on transpositions

Abstract:We study subsets $T$ consisting of some transpositions $(i,j)$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\{1,\dots,n\}$ such that the Cayley graph $\Gamma_T:=Cay(S_n,T)$ is an integral graph, i.e., all eigenvalues of an adjacency matrix of $\Gamma_T$ are integers. Graph properties of $\Gamma_T$ are determined in terms of ones of the graph $G_T$ whose vertex set is $\{1,\dots,n\}$ and $\{i,j\}$ is an edge if and only if $(i,j)\in T$. Here we prove that if $G_T$ is a tree then $\Gamma_T$ is integral if and only if $T$ is isomorphic to the star graph $K_{1,n-1}$, answering Problem 5 of [Electron. J. Comnin., 29(2) (2022) \# P2.9]. Problem 6 of the latter article asks to find necessary and sufficient conditions on $T$ for integralness of $Cay(S_n,T)$ without any further assumption on $T$. We show that if $G_T$ is a graph which we call it a ``generalized complete multipartite graph" then $Cay(S_n,T)$ is integral. We conjecture that $Cay(S_n,T)$ is integral only if $G_T$ is a generalized complete multipartitie graph. To support the latter conjecture we show its validity whenever $G_T$ is some classes of graphs including cycles and cubic graphs.
