Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in some problems related to chromatic number and clique number for the class of $(P_5,K_5-e)$-free graphs, and prove the following. $(a)$ If $G$ is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 7$, then either $G$ is the complement of a bipartite graph or $G$ has a clique cut-set. Moreover, there is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free imperfect graph $H$ with $\omega(H)=6$ and has no clique cut-set. This strengthens a result of Malyshev and Lobanova [Disc. Appl. Math. 219 (2017) 158--166]. $(b)$ If $G$ is a ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 4$, then $\chi(G)\leq \max\{7, \omega(G)\}$. Moreover, the bound is tight when $\omega(G)\notin \{4,5,6\}$. This result together with known results partially answers a question of Ju and Huang [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.18003" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.18003">arXiv:2303.18003</a> [math.CO] 2023], and also improves a result of Xu [Manuscript 2022]. While the "Chromatic Number Problem" is known to be $NP$-hard for the class of $P_5$-free graphs, our results together with some known results imply that the "Chromatic Number Problem" can be solved in polynomial time for the class of ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graphs which may be independent interest.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:In local certification, vertices of a $n$-vertex graph perform a local verification to check if a given property is satisfied by the graph. This verification is performed thanks to certificates, which are pieces of information that are given to the vertices. In this work, we focus on the local certification of $P_5$-freeness, and we prove a $O(n^{3/2})$ upper bound on the size of the certificates, which is (to our knowledge) the first subquadratic upper bound for this property.

Erdős-Gyárfás conjecture on graphs without long induced paths

Abstract:In 1994, Erdős and Gyárfás conjectured that every graph with minimum degree at least 3 has a cycle of length a power of 2. In 2022, Gao and Shan (Graphs and Combinatorics) proved that the conjecture is true for $P_8$-free graphs, i.e., graphs without any induced copies of a path on 8 vertices. In 2024, Hu and Shen (Discrete Mathematics) improved this result by proving that the conjecture is true for $P_{10}$-free graphs. With the aid of a computer search, we improve this further by proving that the conjecture is true for $P_{13}$-free graphs.

Abstract:Say a graph $G$ is a {\em pentagraph} if every cycle has length at least five, and every induced cycle of odd length has length five. N. Robertson proposed the conjecture that the Petersen graph is the only pentagraph that is three-connected and internally 4-connected, but this was disproved by M. Plummer and X. Zha in 2014. Plummer and Zha conjectured that every 3-connected, internally 4-connected pentagraph is three-colourable. We prove this: indeed, we will prove that every pentagraph is three-colourable.

Abstract:The enhanced power graph $\mathcal{P}_E(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two distinct vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if $x, y \in \langle z \rangle$ for some $z \in G$. In this article, we give an affirmative answer of the question posed by Cameron [6] which states that: Is it true that the complement of the enhanced power graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ of a non-cyclic group $G$ has only one connected component apart from isolated vertices? We classify all finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ is bipartite. We show that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ is weakly perfect. Further, we study the subgraph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ of $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ induced by all the non-isolated vertices of $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$. We classify all finite groups $G$ such that the graph is $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is unicyclic and pentacyclic. We prove the non-existence of finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is bicyclic, tricyclic or tetracyclic. Finally, we characterize all finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is outerplanar, planar, projective-planar and toroidal, respectively.

Around the positive graph conjecture

Abstract:A graph $H$ is said to be positive if the homomorphism density $t_H(G)$ is non-negative for all weighted graphs $G$. The positive graph conjecture proposes a characterisation of such graphs, saying that a graph is positive if and only if it is symmetric, in the sense that it is formed by gluing two copies of some subgraph along an independent set. We prove several results relating to this conjecture. First, we make progress towards the conjecture itself by showing that any connected positive graph must have a vertex of even degree. We then make use of this result to identify some new counterexamples to the analogue of Sidorenko's conjecture for hypergraphs. In particular, we show that, for $r$ odd, every $r$-uniform tight cycle is a counterexample, generalising a recent result of Conlon, Lee and Sidorenko that dealt with the case $r=3$. Finally, we relate the positive graph conjecture to the emerging study of graph codes by showing that any positive graph has vanishing graph code density, thereby improving a result of Alon who proved the same result for symmetric graphs. Our proofs make use of a variety of tools and techniques, including the properties of independence polynomials, hypergraph quasirandomness and discrete Fourier analysis.

Some Results on Critical ($P_5,H$)-free Graphs

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

An analogue of Reed's conjecture for digraphs

Abstract:Reed in 1998 conjectured that every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil \frac{\Delta(G)+1+\omega(G)}{2} \rceil$. As a partial result, he proved the existence of $\varepsilon > 0$ for which every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\Delta(G)+1)+\varepsilon\omega(G) \rceil$. We propose an analogue conjecture for digraphs. Given a digraph $D$, we denote by $\vec{\chi}(D)$ the dichromatic number of $D$, which is the minimum number of colours needed to partition $D$ into acyclic induced subdigraphs. We let $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)$ denote the size of the largest biclique (a set of vertices inducing a complete digraph) of $D$ and $\tilde{\Delta}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \sqrt{d^+(v) \cdot d^-(v)}$. We conjecture that every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil \frac{\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1+\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)}{2} \rceil$, which if true implies Reed's conjecture. As a partial result, we prove the existence of $\varepsilon >0$ for which every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1)+\varepsilon\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) \rceil$. This implies both Reed's result and an independent result of Harutyunyan and Mohar for oriented graphs. To obtain this upper bound on $\vec{\chi}$, we prove that every digraph $D$ with $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) > \frac{2}{3}(\Delta_{\max}(D)+1)$, where $\Delta_{\max}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \max(d^+(v),d^-(v))$, admits an acyclic set of vertices intersecting each biclique of $D$, which generalises a result of King.

First-principles statistical mechanics study of the stability of a sub-nanometer thin surface oxide in reactive environments: CO oxidation at Pd(100)

Abstract:We employ a multiscale modeling approach to study the surface structure and composition of a Pd(100) model catalyst in reactive environments. Under gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation (~1 atm, 300-600 K) we find the system on the verge of either stabilizing sub-nanometer thin oxide structures or CO adlayers at the surface. Under steady-state operation this suggests the presence or continuous formation and reduction of oxidic patches at the surface, which could be key to understand the observable catalytic function.

Abstract:Aharoni and Korman (1992) [3] conjectured that every ordered set with no infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for (3+1) -free posets with no infinite antichains. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a P4 -free graph to be a cograph. This allows us to obtain a simple proof of the fact that finite P4 -free graphs are finite cographs. We also prove that N -free chain complete posets and N -free posets with no infinite antichains are series-parallel. As a consequence, we obtain that the conjecture is true for N -free posets with no infinite antichain.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the FPP conjecture, giving a strong upper bound on the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Our proof is an application of the global generation properties of $\mathcal{D}$-modules on the flag variety and their Hodge filtrations.

Abstract:Given a finite family F of graphs, we say that a graph G is "F ‐free" if G does not contain any graph in F as a subgraph. We abbreviate F ‐free to just "F ‐free" when F={F} . A vertex‐colored graph H is called "rainbow" if no two vertices of H have the same color. Given an integer s and a finite family of graphs F , let l(s,F) denote the smallest integer such that any properly vertex‐colored F ‐free graph G having χ(G)≥l(s,F) contains an induced rainbow path on s vertices. Scott and Seymour showed that l(s,K) exists for every complete graph K . A conjecture of N. R. Aravind states that l(s,C3)=s . The upper bound on l(s,C3) that can be obtained using the methods of Scott and Seymour setting K=C3 are, however, super‐exponential. Gyárfás and Sárközy showed that l(s,{C3,C4})=O((2s)2s) . For r≥2 , we show that l(s,K2,r)≤(r−1)(s−1)(s−2)∕2+s and therefore, l(s,C4)≤s2−s+22 . This significantly improves Gyárfás and Sárközy's bound and also covers a bigger class of graphs. We adapt our proof to achieve much stronger upper bounds for graphs of higher girth: we prove that l(s,{C3,C4,...,Cg−1})≤s1+4g−4 , where g≥5 . Moreover, in each case, our results imply the existence of at least s!∕2 distinct induced rainbow paths on s vertices. Along the way, we obtain some new results on an oriented variant of the Gyárfás–Sumner conjecture. For r≥2 , let Br denote the orientations of K2,r in which one vertex has out‐degree or in‐degree r . We show that every Br ‐free oriented graph having a chromatic number at least (r−1)(s−1)(s−2)+2s+1 and every bikernel‐perfect oriented graph with girth g≥5 having a chromatic number at least 2s1+4g−4 contains every oriented tree on at most s vertices as an induced subgraph.

On conflict-free colorings of cyclic polytopes and the girth conjecture for graphs

Abstract:We study conflict-free colorings for hypergraphs derived from the family of facets of $d$-dimensional cyclic polytopes. For odd dimensions $d$, the problem is fairly easy. However, for even dimensions $d$ the problem becomes very difficult. We provide sharp asymptotic bounds for the conflict-free chromatic number in all even dimensions $4\leq d \leq 20$ except for $d=16$. We also provide non-trivial upper and lower bounds for all even dimensions $d$. We exhibit a strong relation to the famous Erdős girth conjecture in extremal graph theory which might be of independent interest for the study of conflict-free colorings. Improving the upper or lower bounds for general even dimensions $d$ would imply an improved lower or upper bound (respectively) on the Erdős girth conjecture. Finally, we extend our result for dimension $4$ showing that the hypergraph whose hyperedges are the union of two discrete intervals from $[n]$ of cardinality at least $3$ has conflict-free chromatic number $\Theta(\sqrt {n})$.
