Abstract:We employ a multiscale modeling approach to study the surface structure and composition of a Pd(100) model catalyst in reactive environments. Under gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation (~1 atm, 300-600 K) we find the system on the verge of either stabilizing sub-nanometer thin oxide structures or CO adlayers at the surface. Under steady-state operation this suggests the presence or continuous formation and reduction of oxidic patches at the surface, which could be key to understand the observable catalytic function.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in some problems related to chromatic number and clique number for the class of $(P_5,K_5-e)$-free graphs, and prove the following. $(a)$ If $G$ is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 7$, then either $G$ is the complement of a bipartite graph or $G$ has a clique cut-set. Moreover, there is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free imperfect graph $H$ with $\omega(H)=6$ and has no clique cut-set. This strengthens a result of Malyshev and Lobanova [Disc. Appl. Math. 219 (2017) 158--166]. $(b)$ If $G$ is a ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 4$, then $\chi(G)\leq \max\{7, \omega(G)\}$. Moreover, the bound is tight when $\omega(G)\notin \{4,5,6\}$. This result together with known results partially answers a question of Ju and Huang [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.18003" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.18003">arXiv:2303.18003</a> [math.CO] 2023], and also improves a result of Xu [Manuscript 2022]. While the "Chromatic Number Problem" is known to be $NP$-hard for the class of $P_5$-free graphs, our results together with some known results imply that the "Chromatic Number Problem" can be solved in polynomial time for the class of ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graphs which may be independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every (2P_2,K_4)-free graph is 4-colorable. The bound is attained by the five-wheel and the complement of the seven-cycle. This answers an open question by Wagon in the 1980s. Our result can also be viewed as a result in the study of the Vizing bound for graph classes. A major open problem in the study of computational complexity of graph coloring is whether coloring can be solved in polynomial time for (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs. Lozin and Malyshev conjecture that the answer is yes. As an application of our main result, we provide the first positive evidence to the conjecture by giving a 2-approximation algorithm for coloring (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs.

Abstract:In this article we show that Maximum Partial List H-Coloring is polynomial-time solvable on P_5-free graphs for every fixed graph H. In particular, this implies that Maximum k-Colorable Subgraph is polynomial-time solvable on P_5-free graphs. This answers an open question from Agrawal, Lima, Lokshtanov, Saurabh & Sharma [SODA 2024]. This also improves the $n^{\omega(G)}$-time algorithm for Maximum Partial H-Coloring by Chudnovsky, King, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski & Spirkl [SIDMA 2021] to polynomial-time algorithm.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:The Colouring problem is to decide if the vertices of a graph can be coloured with at most k colours for a given integer k such that no two adjacent vertices are coloured alike. The complexity of Colouring is fully understood for graph classes characterized by one forbidden induced subgraph H. Despite a huge body of existing work, there are still major complexity gaps if two induced subgraphs H_1 and H_2 are forbidden. We let H_1 be the s-vertex cycle C_s and H_2 be the t-vertex path P_t. We show that Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for s=4 and t =9, which is the first hardness result on Colouring for (C_4,P_t)-free graphs.

Abstract: Let $P_n$ and $K_n$ denote the induced path and complete graph on $n$ vertices, respectively. The {\em kite} is the graph obtained from a $P_4$ by adding a vertex and making it adjacent to all vertices in the $P_4$ except one vertex with degree 1. A graph is ($P_5$, kite)-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a $P_5$ or a kite. For a graph $G$, the chromatic number of $G$ (denoted by $\chi(G)$) is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color, and the clique number of $G$ is the size of a largest clique in $G$. Here, we are interested in the class of ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs with small clique number. It is known that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_3$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G)\leq 3$, every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_4$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G)\leq 4$, and that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_5$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G)\leq 6$. In this paper, we showed the following: $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_6$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G)\leq 7$. $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_7$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G)\leq 9$. We also give examples to show that the above bounds are tight.

Abstract:Given an integer $k>4$ and a graph $H$, we prove that, assuming P$\neq$NP, the List-$k$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time if and only if either every component of $H$ is a path on at most three vertices, or removing the isolated vertices of $H$ leaves an induced subgraph of the five-vertex path. In fact, the "if" implication holds for all $k\geq 1$.

Abstract:Let P t and C ℓ denote a path on t vertices and a cycle on ℓ vertices, respectively. In this paper we study the k-COLORING problem for (P t ,C ℓ)-free graphs. It has been shown by Golovach, Paulusma, and Song that when ℓ = 4 all these problems can be solved in polynomial time. By contrast, we show that in most other cases the k-COLORING problem for (P t ,C ℓ)-free graphs is NP-complete. Specifically, for ℓ = 5 we show that k-COLORING is NP-complete for (P t ,C 5)-free graphs when k ≥ 4 and t ≥ 7; for ℓ ≥ 6 we show that k-COLORING is NP-complete for (P t ,C ℓ)-free graphs when k ≥ 5, t ≥ 6; and additionally, we prove that 4-COLORING is NP-complete for (P t ,C ℓ)-free graphs when t ≥ 7 and ℓ ≥ 6 with ℓ ≠ 7, and that 4-COLORING is NP-complete for (P t ,C ℓ)-free graphs when t ≥ 9 and ℓ ≥ 6 with ℓ ≠ 9. It is known that, generally speaking, for large k the k-COLORING problem tends to remain NP-complete when one forbids an induced path P t with large t. Our findings mean that forbidding an additional induced cycle C ℓ (with ℓ > 4) does not help. We also revisit the problem of k-COLORING (P t ,C 4)-free graphs, in the case t = 6. (For t = 5 the k-COLORING problem is known to be polynomial even on just P 5-free graphs, for every k.) The algorithms of Golovach, Paulusma, and Song are not practical as they depend on Ramsey-type results, and end up using tree-decompositions with very high widths. We develop more practical algorithms for 3-COLORING and 4-COLORING on (P 6,C 4)-free graphs. Our algorithms run in linear time if a clique cutset decomposition of the input graph is given. Moreover, our algorithms are certifying algorithms. We provide a finite list of all minimal non-k-colorable (P 6,C 4)-free graphs, for k = 3 and k = 4. Our algorithms output one of these minimal obstructions whenever a k-coloring is not found. In fact, we prove that there are only finitely many minimal non-k-colorable (P 6,C 4)-free graphs for any fixed k; however, we do not have the explicit lists for higher k, and thus no certifying algorithms. (We note there are infinitely many non-k-colorable P 5-free, and hence P 6-free, graphs for any given k ≥ 4, according to a result of Hoàng, Moore, Recoskie, Sawada, and Vatshelle.)
