Abstract:In a previous publication, we introduced an abstract logic via an abstract notion of quantifier. Drawing upon concepts from categorical logic, this abstract logic interprets formulas from context as subobjects in a specific category, e.g., Cartesian, regular, or coherent categories, Grothendieck, or elementary toposes. We proposed an entailment system formulated as a sequent calculus which we proved complete. Building on this foundation, our current work explores model theory within abstract logic. More precisely, we generalize one of the most important and powerful classical model theory methods, namely the ultraproduct method, and show its fundamental theorem, i.e., Los's theorem. The result is shown as independently as possible of a given quantifier.

Abstract:We introduce and elaborate a novel formalism for the manipulation and analysis of proofs as objects in a global manner. In this first approach the formalism is restricted to first-order problems characterized by condensed detachment. It is applied in an exemplary manner to a coherent and comprehensive formal reconstruction and analysis of historical proofs of a widely-studied problem due to Łukasiewicz. The underlying approach opens the door towards new systematic ways of generating lemmas in the course of proof search to the effects of reducing the search effort and finding shorter proofs. Among the numerous reported experiments along this line, a proof of Łukasiewicz's problem was automatically discovered that is much shorter than any proof found before by man or machine.

Abstract:We develop a transfer principle of structural Ramsey theory from finite structures to ultraproducts. We show that under certain mild conditions, when a class of finite structures has finite small Ramsey degrees, under the (Generalized) Continuum Hypothesis the ultraproduct has finite big Ramsey degrees for internal colorings. The necessity of restricting to internal colorings is demonstrated by the example of the ultraproduct of finite linear orders. Under CH, this ultraproduct L⁎ has, as a spine, η1 , an uncountable analogue of the order type of rationals η . Finite big Ramsey degrees for η were exactly calculated by Devlin in [5] . It is immediate from [39] that η1 fails to have finite big Ramsey degrees. Moreover, we extend Devlin's coloring to η1 to show that it witnesses big Ramsey degrees of finite tuples in η on every copy of η in η1 , and consequently in L⁎ . This work gives additional confirmation that ultraproducts are a suitable environment for studying Ramsey properties of finite and infinite structures.

Abstract:In the present paper we prove the compactness theorem with respect to partial structures and quasi-truth, using the technique of ultraproducts. Partial structures and quasi-truth are two notions developed within the partial structures approach, which is a philosophical conception that emerged in the context of contemporary philosophy of science. Nevertheless, the notions developed within this conception, in particular the two mentioned, have a model-theoretic content that has not been explored so far, so that this paper is part of a project where we intend to analyze their formal properties by means of the development of a partial model theory, which is an extension of traditional model theory to partial structures.

Abstract:Software synthesis - the process of generating complete, general-purpose programs from specifications - has become a hot research topic in the past few years. For decades the problem was thought to be insurmountable: the search space of possible programs is far too massive to efficiently traverse. Advances in efficient constraint solving have overcome this barrier, enabling a new generation of effective synthesis systems. Most existing systems compile synthesis tasks down to low-level SMT instances, sacrificing high-level semantic information while solving only first-order problems (i.e., filling integer holes). Recent work takes an alternative approach, using the Curry-Howard isomorphism and techniques from automated theorem proving to construct higher-order programs with algebraic datatypes. My thesis involved extending this type-directed synthesis engine to handle product types, which required significant modifications to both the underlying theory and the tool itself. Product types streamline other language features, eliminating variable-arity constructors among other workarounds employed in the original synthesis system. A form of logical conjunction, products are invertible, making it possible to equip the synthesis system with an efficient theorem-proving technique called focusing that eliminates many of the nondeterministic choices inherent in proof search. These theoretical enhancements informed a new version of the type-directed synthesis prototype implementation, which remained performance-competitive with the original synthesizer. A significant advantage of the type-directed synthesis framework is its extensibility; this thesis is a roadmap for future such efforts to increase the expressive power of the system.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an infinite set. Let $\Omega(A)$ be the algebra over $A$ where every constant is a fundamental constant and every finitary function is a fundamental operation. We shall give a method of representing any algebra $\mathcal{L}$ in the variety generated by $\Omega(A)$ as limit reduced powers and even direct limits of limit reduced powers of $\mathcal{L}$. If the algebra $\mathcal{L}$ is elementarily equivalent to $\Omega(A)$, then this construction represents $\Omega(A)$ as a limit ultrapower and also as direct limits of limit ultrapowers of $\Omega(A)$. This method therefore gives a method of representing Boolean ultrapowers and other generalizations of the ultrapower construction as limit ultrapowers and direct limits of limit ultrapowers.

Abstract:In model-driven development, an ordered model transformation is a nested set of transformations between source and target classes, in which each transformation is governed by its own pre and post- conditions, but structurally dependent on its parent. Following the proofs-as-model-transformations approach, in this paper we consider a formalisation in Constructive Type Theory of the concepts of model and model transformation, and show how the correctness proofs of potentially large ordered model transformations can be systematically assembled from the proofs of the specifications of their parts, making them easier to derive.

Symmetric Monoidal Smash Products in Homotopy Type Theory

Abstract:In Homotopy Type Theory, few constructions have proved as troublesome as the smash product. While its definition is just as direct as in classical mathematics, one quickly realises that in order to define and reason about functions over iterations of it, one has to verify an exponentially growing number of coherences. This has led to crucial results concerning smash products remaining open. One particularly important such result is the fact that smash products form a (1-coherent) symmetric monoidal product on the universe of pointed types. This fact was used, without a complete proof, by e.g. Brunerie in his PhD thesis to construct the cup product on integral cohomology and is, more generally, a fundamental result in traditional algebraic topology. In this paper, we salvage the situation by introducing a simple informal heuristic for reasoning about functions defined over iterated smash products. We then use the heuristic to verify e.g. the hexagon and pentagon identities, thereby obtaining a proof of symmetric monoidality. We also provide a formal statement of the heuristic in terms of an induction principle concerning the construction of homotopies of functions defined over iterated smash products. The key results presented here have been formalised in the proof assistant Cubical Agda.

Abstract:As the development of formal proofs is a time-consuming task, it is important to devise ways of sharing the already written proofs to prevent wasting time redoing them. One of the challenges in this domain is to translate proofs written in proof assistants based on impredicative logics to proof assistants based on predicative logics, whenever impredicativity is not used in an essential way. In this paper we present a transformation for sharing proofs with a core predicative system supporting prenex universe polymorphism. It consists in trying to elaborate each term into a predicative universe-polymorphic term as general as possible. The use of universe polymorphism is justified by the fact that mapping each universe to a fixed one in the target theory is not sufficient in most cases. During the elaboration, we need to solve unification problems in the equational theory of universe levels. In order to do this, we give a complete characterization of when a single equation admits a most general unifier. This characterization is then employed in a partial algorithm which uses a constraint-postponement strategy for trying to solve unification problems. The proposed translation is of course partial, but in practice allows one to translate many proofs that do not use impredicativity in an essential way. Indeed, it was implemented in the tool Predicativize and then used to translate semi-automatically many non-trivial developments from Matita's library to Agda, including proofs of Bertrand's Postulate and Fermat's Little Theorem, which (as far as we know) were not available in Agda yet.

Abstract:We propose stratified institutions (a decade old generalised version of the theory of institutions of Goguen and Burstall) as a fully abstract model theoretic approach to modal logic. This allows for a uniform treatment of model theoretic aspects across the great multiplicity of contemporary modal logic systems. Moreover Kripke semantics (in all its manifold variations) is captured in an implicit manner free from the sometimes bulky aspects of explicit Kripke structures, also accommodating other forms of concrete semantics for modal logic systems. The conceptual power of stratified institutions is illustrated with the development of a modal ultraproducts method that is independent of the concrete details of the actual modal logical systems. Consequently, a wide array of compactness results in concrete modal logics may be derived easily.

Abstract:Abstract This paper explores how, given a proof, we can systematically transform it into a proof that contains no irrelevancies and which is as strong as possible. I define a weaker and stronger notion of what counts as a proof with no irrelevancies, calling them perfect proofs and gaunt proofs, respectively. Using classical core logic to study classical validities and core logic to study intuitionistic validities, I show that every core proof or classical core proof can be transformed into a perfect proof. In a sequel paper, I show how proofs in core logic can also be transformed into gaunt proofs and I observe that this property fails for classical core logic.

Abstract:The material presented in this paper contributes to establishing a basis deemed essential for substantial progress in Automated Deduction. It identifies and studies global features in selected problems and their proofs which offer the potential of guiding proof search in a more direct way. The studied problems are of the wide-spread form of "axiom(s) and rule(s) imply goal(s)". The features include the well-known concept of lemmas. For their elaboration both human and automated proofs of selected theorems are taken into a close comparative consideration. The study at the same time accounts for a coherent and comprehensive formal reconstruction of historical work by {\L}ukasiewicz, Meredith and others. First experiments resulting from the study indicate novel ways of lemma generation to supplement automated first-order provers of various families, strengthening in particular their ability to find short proofs.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.

Automating Unrealizability Logic: Hoare-Style Proof Synthesis for Infinite Sets of Programs

Abstract:Automated verification of all members of a (potentially infinite) set of programs has the potential to be useful in program synthesis, as well as in verification of dynamically loaded code, concurrent code, and language properties. Existing techniques for verification of sets of programs are limited in scope and unable to create or use interpretable or reusable information about sets of programs. The consequence is that one cannot learn anything from one verification problem that can be used in another. Unrealizability Logic (UL), proposed by Kim et al. as the first Hoare-style proof system to prove properties over sets of programs (defined by a regular tree grammar), presents a theoretical framework that can express and use reusable insight. In particular, UL features nonterminal summaries -- inductive facts that characterize recursive nonterminals (analogous to procedure summaries in Hoare logic). In this work, we design the first UL proof synthesis algorithm, implemented as Wuldo. Specifically, we decouple the problem of deciding how to apply UL rules from the problem of synthesizing/checking nonterminal summaries by computing proof structure in a fully syntax-directed fashion. We show that Wuldo, when provided nonterminal summaries, can express and prove verification problems beyond the reach of existing tools, including establishing how infinitely many programs behave on infinitely many inputs. In some cases, Wuldo can even synthesize the necessary nonterminal summaries. Moreover, Wuldo can reuse previously proven nonterminal summaries across verification queries, making verification 1.96 times as fast as when summaries are instead proven from scratch.

Abstract:Parametricity allows the transfer of proofs between different implementations of the same data structure. The lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory is an extension of the lambda-calculus with dependent types and user-defined rewrite rules. It is a logical framework, used to exchange proofs between different proof systems. We define an interpretation of theories of the lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory, inspired by parametricity. Such an interpretation allows to transfer proofs for free between theories that feature the notions of proposition and proof, when the source theory can be embedded into the target theory.
