Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In a previous publication, we introduced an abstract logic via an abstract notion of quantifier. Drawing upon concepts from categorical logic, this abstract logic interprets formulas from context as subobjects in a specific category, e.g., Cartesian, regular, or coherent categories, Grothendieck, or elementary toposes. We proposed an entailment system formulated as a sequent calculus which we proved complete. Building on this foundation, our current work explores model theory within abstract logic. More precisely, we generalize one of the most important and powerful classical model theory methods, namely the ultraproduct method, and show its fundamental theorem, i.e., Los's theorem. The result is shown as independently as possible of a given quantifier.

Abstract:We develop the theory of ultracoproducts and weak containment for flows of arbitrary topological groups. This provides a nice complement to corresponding theories for p.m.p. actions and unitary representations of locally compact groups. For the class of locally Roelcke precompact groups, the theory is especially rich, allowing us to define for certain families of $G$-flows a suitable compact space of weak types. When $G$ is locally compact, all $G$-flows belong to one such family, yielding a single compact space describing all weak types of $G$-flows.

Abstract:An algebraization of the notion of topology has been proposed more than seventy years ago in a classical paper by McKinsey and Tarski. However, in McKinsey and Tarski's setting the model theoretical notion of homomorphism does not correspond to the notion of continuity. We notice that the two notions correspond if instead we consider a preorder relation $ \sqsubseteq $ defined by $a \sqsubseteq b$ if $a$ is contained in the topological closure of $b$. A specialization poset is a partially ordered set endowed with a further coarser preorder relation $ \sqsubseteq $. We show that every specialization poset can be embedded in the specialization poset naturally associated to some topological space, where the order relation corresponds to set-theoretical inclusion. Specialization semilattices are defined in an analogous way and the corresponding embedding theorem is proved. The interest of these structures arises from the fact that they also occur in many rather disparate settings, even far removed from topology.

Abstract:This survey aims to provide a guide to the literature on topological 4-manifolds. Foundational theorems on 4-manifolds are stated, especially in the topological category. Precise references are given, with indications of the strategies employed in the proofs. Where appropriate we give statements for manifolds of all dimensions. Many intuitively plausible theorems which are standard results in differential topology are either extraordinarily deep results in the topological category, are open, or are known to be false. Hence one must proceed with caution. This book seeks to help 4-manifold topologists navigate potential pitfalls, and to apply the many powerful results that do exist with confidence.

Srinivasan demonstrated that when the space under consideration is an absolute neighborhood retract, its category can be realized through arbitrary subsets, not necessarily open ones. Abstract:Given the interest in relating the large $N$ limit of SU(N) to groups of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, we consider the topologies of these groups and show that both in terms of homology and homotopy, they are extremely different. Similar conclusions are drawn for other infinite dimensional classical groups.

The interaction between their intrinsic combinatorial and topological structures makes finite spaces a useful tool for studying problems in Topology, Algebra and Geometry from a new perspective. In particular, the methods developed in this manuscript are used to study Quillen’s conjecture on the poset of p-subgroups of a finite group and the Andrews-Curtis conjecture on the 3-deformability of contractible two-dimensional complexes. This self-contained work constitutes the first detailed exposition on the algebraic topology of finite spaces. Abstract:In the present paper we prove the compactness theorem with respect to partial structures and quasi-truth, using the technique of ultraproducts. Partial structures and quasi-truth are two notions developed within the partial structures approach, which is a philosophical conception that emerged in the context of contemporary philosophy of science. Nevertheless, the notions developed within this conception, in particular the two mentioned, have a model-theoretic content that has not been explored so far, so that this paper is part of a project where we intend to analyze their formal properties by means of the development of a partial model theory, which is an extension of traditional model theory to partial structures.

Abstract:The classical ``computation'' methods in Algebraic Topology most often work by means of highly infinite objects and in fact +are_not+ constructive. Typical examples are shown to describe the nature of the problem. The Rubio-Sergeraert solution for Constructive Algebraic Topology is recalled. This is not only a theoretical solution: the concrete computer program +Kenzo+ has been written down which precisely follows this method. This program has been used in various cases, opening new research subjects and producing in several cases significant results unreachable by hand. In particular the Kenzo program can compute the first homotopy groups of a simply connected +arbitrary+ simplicial set.

Abstract:Abstract For separable ‐algebras and , we define a topology on the set consisting of homotopy classes of asymptotic morphisms from to . This gives an enrichment of the Connes–Higson asymptotic category over topological spaces. We show that the Hausdorffization of this category is equivalent to the shape category of Dadarlat. As an application, we obtain a topology on the ‐theory group with properties analogous to those of the topology on . The Hausdorffized ‐theory group is also introduced and studied. We obtain a continuity result for the functor , which implies a new continuity result for the functor .

Abstract:In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called <math>w⁎</math>-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.

Abstract:Compiling essential results for non-quasianalytic ultradistribution spaces and Colombeau versions of generalized ultradistribution algebras, we analyze strong $B$- and strong $R$-association of a generalized ultradistribution $[(f_\varepsilon)]$. The strong association of $[(f_\varepsilon)]$ to a Komatsu-type ultradistribution $T$, with additional assumption on regularity of $[(f_\varepsilon)]$ of Beurling, respectively, Roumieu type, implies that $T$ is an ultradifferentiable function of Beurling, Roumieu type, respectively. We demonstrate that, under suitable conditions on regularity, a weakly negligible net $(g_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in(0,1)}$ (meaning that the net of complex numbers $(\int g_\varepsilon\phi dx)_{\varepsilon\in(0,1)}$ is Beurling, respectively, Roumieu negligible for every ultradifferentiable function $\phi$ in the corresponding test space), is a negligible net in the sense of generalized ultradistributions. Furthermore, we prove that a translation invariant generalized ultradistribution $g$ is equal to a generalized constant in both types of generalized ultradistribution algebras.

Abstract:Solid modules over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p$, introduced by Clausen and Scholze, are a well-behaved variant of complete topological vector spaces that forms a symmetric monoidal Grothendieck abelian category. For a discrete field $k$, we construct the category of ultrasolid $k$-modules, which specialises to solid modules over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this setting, we show some commutative algebra results like an ultrasolid variant of Nakayama's lemma. We also explore higher algebra in the form of animated and $\mathbb{E}_\infty$ ultrasolid $k$-algebras, and their deformation theory. We focus on the subcategory of complete profinite $k$-algebras, which we prove is contravariantly equivalent to equal characteristic formal moduli problems with coconnective tangent complex.
