Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.

Abstract:The interplay between structure-search of the native structure and desolvation in protein folding has been explored using a minimalist model. These results support a folding mechanism where most of the structural formation of the protein is achieved before water is expelled from the hydrophobic core. This view integrates water expulsion effects into the funnel energy landscape theory of protein folding. Comparisons to experimental results are shown for the SH3 protein. After the folding transition, a near-native intermediate with partially solvated hydrophobic core is found. This transition is followed by a final step that cooperatively squeezes out water molecules from the partially hydrated protein core.

Abstract:This book is an introductory course to basic commutative algebra with a particular emphasis on finitely generated projective modules. We adopt the constructive point of view, with which all existence theorems have an explicit algorithmic content content. In particular, when a theorem affirms the existence of an object -- the solution of a problem -- a construction algorithm of the object can always be extracted from the given proof. We revisit with a new and often simplifying eye several abstract classical theories. In particular, we review theories which did not have any algorithmic content in their general natural framework, such as Galois theory, the Dedekind domains, the finitely generated projective modules or the Krull dimension.

Abstract:In \cite{GQ2008} R. Gow and R. Quinlan have cast a new look on the endomorphism algebra of a $K$-vector space $V$ of dimension $n$ assuming that $K$ has a Galois extension $L$ of degree $n$. In this approach the $K$-space $L$ may serve as a model for $V$ and Galois-theoretic ideas and results may be applied to elucidate the structure of endomorphisms and other important objects of linear algebra. In particular, this leads to the clarification of the structure of a rank-one endomorphism, trace of an endomorphism, criteria for linear indepedence etc. We present an exposition of these results using the language of tensor algebra wherever possible to provide shorter and more conceptual proofs.

Abstract:These are notes for the course CS-172 I first taught in the Fall 1986 at UC Berkeley and subsequently at Boston University. The goal was to introduce the undergraduates to basic concepts of Theory of Computation and to provoke their interest in further study. Model-dependent effects were systematically ignored. Concrete computational problems were considered only as illustrations of general principles. The notes are skeletal: they do have (terse) proofs, but exercises, references, intuitive comments, examples are missing or inadequate. The notes can be used for designing a course or by students who want to refresh the known material or are bright and have access to an instructor for questions. Each subsection takes about a week of the course.

Abstract:The inverse Galois problem asks whether any finite group can be realised as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals. This problem and its refinements have stimulated a large amount of research in number theory and algebraic geometry in the past century, ranging from Noether's problem (letting X denote the quotient of the affine space by a finite group acting linearly, when is X rational?) to the rigidity method (if X is not rational, does it at least contain interesting rational curves?) and to the arithmetic of unirational varieties (if all else fails, does X at least contain interesting rational points?). The goal of the present notes, which formed the basis for three lectures given at the Park City Mathematics Institute in August 2022, is to provide an introduction to these topics.

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:For a variety over a global field, one can consider subsets of the set of adelic points of the variety cut out by finite abelian descent or Brauer-Manin obstructions. Given a Galois extension of the ground field one can consider similar sets over the extension and take Galois invariants. In this paper, we study under which circumstances the Galois invariants recover the obstruction sets over the ground field. As an application of our results, we study finite abelian descent and Brauer-Manin obstructions for isotrivial curves over function fields and extend results obtained by the first and last authors for constant curves to the isotrivial case.

Abstract:This book is a revised and greatly expanded version of our book Elements of Number Theory published in 1972. As with the first book the primary audience we envisage consists of upper level undergraduate mathematics majors and graduate students. We have assumed some familiarity with the material in a standard undergraduate course in abstract algebra. A large portion of Chapters 1-11 can be read even without such background with the aid of a small amount of supplementary reading. The later chapters assume some knowledge of Galois theory, and in Chapters 16 and 18 an acquaintance with the theory of complex variables is necessary. Number theory is an ancient subject and its content is vast. Any intro ductory book must, of necessity, make a very limited selection from the fascinat ing array of possible topics. Our focus is on topics which point in the direction of algebraic number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. By a careful selection of subject matter we have found it possible to exposit some rather advanced material without requiring very much in the way oftechnical background. Most of this material is classical in the sense that is was dis covered during the nineteenth century and earlier, but it is also modern because it is intimately related to important research going on at the present time.
