Abstract:We show that if a fibered knot $K$ is expressed as a band--connected sum of $K_1, \ldots, K_n$, then each $K_i$ is fibered, and the genus of $K$ is greater than or equal to that of the connected sum of $K_1,\ldots,K_n$.

Abstract:Supose that $Y$ is a lens space with $|H_1(Y; \mathbb{Z})|$ prime, and $Y$ does not contain a genus one fibered knot. We show that $Y$ contains a knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle if and only if $Y$ is the result of $p/q$-surgery on the trefoil. This partially answers a question posed by Ken Baker in a paper in which he gives a complete classification of genus one fibered knots contained in lens spaces. Combining Baker's classification with Moser's characterization of lens space surgeries on the trefoil, we generate an infinite family of lens spaces which do not contain any knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle.

Abstract:We construct a generalized Witten genus for spin$^c$ manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spin$^c$ manifolds called string$^c$ manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for $8k+2$ dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalized Witten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on string$^c$ and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.

Abstract:Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

On unknotting fibered positive knots and braids

Abstract:The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. In fact, we conjecture that one of our examples is a counterexample to Stoimenow's conjecture.

Abstract:A marked strongly invertible knot is a triple $(K,h,\delta)$ of a knot $K$ in $S^3$, a strong inversion $h$ of $K$, and a subarc $\delta \subset \operatorname{Fix}(h)\cong S^1$ bounded by $\operatorname{Fix}(h)\cap K\cong S^0$. An invariant Seifert surface for $(K,h,\delta)$ is an $h$-invariant Seifert surface for $K$ that intersects $\operatorname{Fix}(h)$ in the arc $\delta$. In this paper, we completely determine the equivariant genus (the minimum of the genera of invariant Seifert surfaces for $(K,h,\delta)$) of every marked strongly invertible knot $(K,h,\delta)$ with $K$ a $2$-bridge knot.

Abstract:The Links-Gould invariant of links $LG^{2,1}$ is a two-variable generalization of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. Using representation theory of $U_{q}\mathfrak{gl}(2 \vert 1)$, we prove that the degree of the Links-Gould polynomial provides a lower bound on the Seifert genus of any knot, therefore improving the bound known as the Seifert inequality in the case of the Alexander invariant. One practical consequence of this new genus bound is a straightforward proof of the fact that the Kinoshita-Terasaka and Conway knots have genus greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:Let $f:S \fr B$ be a surface fibration with fibres of genus 5. We find a linear relation between the fundamental invariants of the surface. Namely $K_f^2=\chi_f+N$ where $N$ is the number of trigonal fibres. Our proof is based on the analysis of the relative canonical algebra $\cal{R}(f)$.
On the genera of symmetric unions of knots

Abstract:In the study of ribbon knots, Lamm introduced symmetric unions inspired by earlier work of Kinoshita and Terasaka. We show an identity between the twisted Alexander polynomials of a symmetric union and its partial knot. As a corollary, we obtain an inequality concerning their genera. It is known that there exists an epimorphism between their knot groups, and thus our inequality provides a positive answer to an old problem of Jonathan Simon in this case. Our formula also offers a useful condition to constrain possible symmetric union presentations of a given ribbon knot. It is an open question whether every ribbon knot is a symmetric union.

Abstract:The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot K in the three sphere is defined to be the minimum first Betti number of a non-orientable surface F in the four-ball so that K bounds F. We will survey the tools used to compute the non-orientable 4-genus, and use various techniques to calculate this invariant for non-alternating 11 crossing knots. We also will view obstructions to a knot bounding a Möbius band given by the double branched cover of the three sphere branched over K.

Abstract:The nonorientable four-ball genus of a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is the minimal first Betti number of nonorientable surfaces in $B^4$ bounded by $K$. By amalgamating ideas from involutive knot Floer homology and unoriented knot Floer homology, we give a new lower bound on the smooth nonorientable four-ball genus $\gamma_4$ of any knot. This bound is sharp for several families of torus knots, including $T_{4n,(2n\pm 1)^2}$ for even $n\ge 2$, a family Longo showed were counterexamples to Batson's conjecture. We also prove that, whenever $p$ is an even positive integer and $\frac{p}{2}$ is not a perfect square, the torus knot $T_{p,q}$ does not bound a locally flat Möbius band for almost all integers $q$ relatively prime to $p$.

Abstract:The $T$-genus of a knot is the minimal number of borromean-type triple points on a normal singular disk with no clasp bounded by the knot; it is an upper bound for the slice genus. Kawauchi, Shibuya and Suzuki characterized the slice knots by the vanishing of their $T$-genus. We generalize this to provide a $3$-dimensional characterization of the slice genus. Further, we prove that the $T$-genus majors the $4$-dimensional positive clasp number and we deduce that the difference between the $T$-genus and the slice genus can be arbitrarily large. We introduce the ribbon counterpart of the $T$-genus and prove that it is an upper bound for the ribbon genus. Interpreting the $T$-genera in terms of $\Delta$-distance, we show that the $T$-genus and the ribbon $T$-genus coincide for all knots if and only if all slice knots are ribbon. We work in the more general setting of algebraically split links and we also discuss the case of colored links. Finally, we express Milnor's triple linking number of an algebraically split $3$-component link as the algebraic intersection number of three immersed disks bounded by the three components.

Abstract:We study a family of $(1,1)$-pattern knots that generalize the Mazur pattern, and compute the concordance invariants $\tau$ and $\epsilon$ of $n$-twisted satellites formed from these patterns. We show that none of the $n$-twisted patterns from this family act surjectively on the smooth or rational concordance group. We also determine when the $n$-twisted generalized Mazur patterns are fibered in the solid torus, compute their genus in $S^1 \times D^2$, and show that $n$-twisted satellites with generalized Mazur patterns and non-trivial companions are not Floer thin.
