Abstract:Let $f:S \fr B$ be a surface fibration with fibres of genus 5. We find a linear relation between the fundamental invariants of the surface. Namely $K_f^2=\chi_f+N$ where $N$ is the number of trigonal fibres. Our proof is based on the analysis of the relative canonical algebra $\cal{R}(f)$.

Abstract:We compute the signature of the Milnor fiber of certain type of non-isolated complex surface singularities, namely, images of finitely determined holomorphic germs. An explicit formula is given in algebraic terms. As a corollary we show that the signature of the Milnor fiber is a topological invariant for these singularities. The proof combines complex analytic and smooth topological techniques. The main tools are Thom-Mather theory of map germs and the Ekholm-Szűcs-Takase-Saeki formula for immersions. We give a table with many examples for which the signature is computed using our formula.

Abstract:Suppose $f:S\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1$ is a surface fibration of genus $g$ with $3$ singular fibers and two of the fibers are semistable. In 1998, K. V. Nguyen conjectured that such kind of fibration does not exist for $g\ge2$. But in 2013, C. Gong, X. Lu, and S.-L. Tan found a counterexample to Nguyen's conjecture for $g=2$. Note that such kind of fibration shows strong arithmetic properties, and as such the counterexamples are important, but rare in fact. In this paper, a new counterexample to Nguyen's conjecture for $g=2$ is constructed.

Abstract:This note aims to improve known numerical bounds proved earlier by Chen \cite{PAMS} and Chen-Hacon \cite{Chen-Hacon} and to present some new examples of smooth minimal 3-folds canonically fibred by surfaces (resp. curves) of geometric genus as large as 19 (resp. 13). As an interesting by-product, we present a new class of general type surfaces which are canonically fibred by curves of genus 13.

Abstract:Let $f\colon S\to B$ a fibred surface with fibres of genus $g\geq 2$ and base curve of genus $b$. Let $u_f$ be its unitary rank. We prove many new slope inequalities involving $u_f$ and some other invariants of the fibration. As applications: (1) we prove a new Xiao-type bound on $u_f$ with respect to $g$ for non-isotrivial fibrations: \[ u_f< g\frac{5g-2}{6g-3}. \] In particular this imples that if $f$ is not locally trivial and $u_f=g-1$ is maximal, then $g\leq 6$; (2) we prove a result in the direction of the Coleman-Oort conjecture: a new constrain on the rank of the (-1,0) part of the maximal unitary Higgs subbundle of a curve generically contained in the Torelli locus; (3) we study in the detail the extremal case (for non-isotrivial $f$) where $u_f=g-1$, giving many constrains for the case $g=6$, $u_f=5$.

Signature, slicing foams, and crossing changes of Klein graphs

Abstract:A totally oriented Klein graph is a trivalent spatial graph in the 3-sphere with a 3-coloring of its edges and an orientation on each bicolored link. A totally oriented Klein foam is a 3-colored 2-complex in the 4-ball whose boundary is a Klein foam and whose bicolored surfaces are oriented. We extend Gille-Robert's signature for 3-Hamiltonian Klein graphs to all totally oriented Klein graphs and develop an analogy of Murasugi's bounds relating the signature, slice genus and unknotting number of knots. In particular, we show that the signature of a totally oriented Klein graph produces a lower bound on the negative orbifold Euler characteristic of certain totally oriented Klein foams bounded by $\Gamma$. When $\Gamma$ is abstractly planar, these negative Euler characteristics, in turn, produce a lower bound on a certain natural unknotting number for $\Gamma$. Mutatis mutandi, we produce lower bounds on the corresponding Gordian distance between two totally oriented Klein graphs that can be related by a sequence of crossing changes. We also give examples of theta-curves for which our lower bounds on unknotting number improve on previously known bounds.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate singularities on fibrations and related topics. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov and McKernan on singularities on Fano type fibrations and a conjecture of the author on singularities on log Calabi-Yau fibrations. From these we derive a variant of a conjecture of McKernan and Prokhorov on rationally connected varieties with nef anti-canonical divisor. We discuss other applications including existence of bounded klt complements and gonality of fibres of del Pezzo fibrations. We prove a general result on controlling multiplicities of fibres of certain fibrations (not necessarily of Fano type) which is the key ingredient of the proofs of the above results.
Slope inequality of fibered surfaces, Morsification conjecture and moduli of curves

Abstract:Using the theory of moduli of curves, we establish various slope inequalities for general fibered surfaces. More precisely, we introduce the notion of functorial divisors on Artin stacks and prove a theorem concerning their effectiveness. Furthermore, we consider the moduli stack of reduced and local complete intersection canonically polarized curves and prove that the closed substack parametrizing non-stable curves has no divisorial components. Applying the above theorems to some tautological divisors on various moduli stacks of curves, we obtain several slope (in)equalities, e.g., a generalization of Moriwaki's slope inequality, slope equalities of general fibered surfaces whose fibers satisfy the Morsification conjecture. As applications, we provide a positive answer to Reid's conjecture concerning algebraic Morsification of non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus $3$ and a positive partial answer to the question posed by Lu and Tan regarding the Chern invariants of fiber germs.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:Hyperelliptic broken Lefschetz fibrations are generalizations of hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations. We generalize Endo's local signature formula to hyperelliptic directed broken Lefschetz fibrations. This is described in terms of Endo's local signature formula and a rational-valued homomorphism on the subgroup of the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a surface which preserves a simple closed curve setwise.

Abstract:Suppose $K$ is a knot in a 3-manifold $Y$, and that $Y$ admits a pair of distinct contact structures. Assume that $K$ has Legendrian representatives in each of these contact structures, such that the corresponding Thurston-Bennequin framings are equivalent. This paper provides a method to prove that the contact structures resulting from Legendrian surgery along these two representatives remain distinct. Applying this method to the situation where the starting manifold is $-\Sigma(2,3,6m+1)$ and the knot is a singular fiber, together with convex surface theory we can classify the tight contact structures on certain families of Seifert fiber spaces.

Abstract:We establish the slope equality and give an upper bound of the slope for finite cyclic covering fibrations of an elliptic surface including bielliptic fibrations of genus greater than 5. We also give an upper bound of the slope for triple cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface and hyperelliptic fibrations, which provides a new proof of Xiao's upper bound.

Abstract:Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic curves which degenerate into a single singular fiber. We determine the resolution of each of the singularities in the family and find a flat deformation of the resolution into simpler pieces, resulting in a fibration of Lefschetz type. We then record the description of the Lefschetz as a positive factorization in Dehn twists. This gives us a dictionary between configurations of curves and monodromy factorizations for some singularities of genus 2 fibrations.

Fibrations by plane quartic curves with a canonical moving singularity

Abstract:We classify fibrations by integral plane projective rational quartic curves whose generic fibre is regular but admits a non-smooth point that is a canonical divisor. These fibrations can only exist in characteristic two. The geometric generic fibre, which determines the generic behaviour of the special fibres, is an integral plane projective rational quartic curve over the algebraic closure of the function field of the base. It has the remarkable property that the tangent lines at the non-singular points are either all bitangents or all non-ordinary inflection tangents; moreover it is strange, that is, all the tangent lines meet in a common point. We construct two fibrations that are universal in the sense that any other fibration with the aforementioned properties can be obtained from one of them by a base extension. Furthermore, among these fibrations we choose a pencil of plane quartic curves and study in detail its geometry. We determine the corresponding minimal regular model and we describe it as a purely inseparable double covering of a quasi-elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We show that there exists a Lefschetz fibration with the regular fiber diffeomorphic to $T^{2}$ on the Milnor fiber of any of cusp or simple elliptic singularities in complex three variables. As a consequence, we obtain a smooth topological decomposition of a K3 surface into two Milnor fibers according to each of the extended strange duality pairs between cusp singularities, so that an elliptic fibration structure of the K3 surface restricts to the Lefschetz fibration structure of each Milnor fiber.

A New Model for Elliptic Fibrations with a Rank One Mordell-Weil Group: I. Singular Fibers and Semi-Stable Degenerations

Abstract: We introduce a new model for elliptic fibrations endowed with a Mordell-Weil group of rank one. We call it a Q$_7(\mathscr{L},\mathscr{S})$ model. It naturally generalizes several previous models of elliptic fibrations popular in the F-theory literature. The model is also explicitly smooth, thus relevant physical quantities can be computed in terms of topological invariants in straight manner. Since the general fiber is defined by a cubic curve, basic arithmetic operations on the curve can be done using the chord-tangent group law. We will use this model to determine the spectrum of singular fibers of an elliptic fibration of rank one and compute a generating function for its Euler characteristic. With a view toward string theory, we determine a semi-stable degeneration which is understood as a weak coupling limit in F-theory. We show that it satisfies a non-trivial topological relation at the level of homological Chern classes. This relation ensures that the D3 charge in F-theory is the same as the one in the weak coupling limit.

Abstract:We prove that any genus-2 Lefschetz fibration without reducible fibers and with ``transitive monodromy'' is holomorphic. The latter condition comprises all cases where the number of singular fibers is not congruent to 0 modulo 40. An auxiliary statement of independent interest is the holomorphicity of symplectic surfaces in S^2-bundles over S^2, of relative degree up to 7 over the base, and of symplectic surfaces in CP^2 of degree up to 17.
