Abstract:We determine the genus one fibered knots in lens spaces that have tunnel number one. We also show that every tunnel number one, once-punctured torus bundle is the result of Dehn filling a component of the Whitehead link in the 3-sphere.

Abstract:This paper contains a brief discussion of an object evaluator which is based on principles of evaluations in a category. The main tool system referred as the Application Development Environment (ADE) is used to build database applications involving the graphical user interface (GUI). The separation of a database access and the user interface is reached by distinguishing the potential and actual objects. The variety of applications may be generated that communicate with different and distinct desktop databases. The commutative diagrams' technique allows to involve retrieval and call of the delayed procedures.

Abstract:Supose that $Y$ is a lens space with $|H_1(Y; \mathbb{Z})|$ prime, and $Y$ does not contain a genus one fibered knot. We show that $Y$ contains a knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle if and only if $Y$ is the result of $p/q$-surgery on the trefoil. This partially answers a question posed by Ken Baker in a paper in which he gives a complete classification of genus one fibered knots contained in lens spaces. Combining Baker's classification with Moser's characterization of lens space surgeries on the trefoil, we generate an infinite family of lens spaces which do not contain any knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle.

Abstract:For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an iterated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated constructions produce all the 2-bridge knots, giving a new calculation of the slope invariants of their tunnels. In the final section we compile a list of the known possibilities for the set of tunnels of a given tunnel number 1 knot.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a nontrivial knot in $S^{3}$ and $t(K)$ its tunnel number. For any $(p\geq 2,q)$-slope in the torus boundary of a closed regular neighborhood of $ K$ in $S^{3}$, denoted by $K^{\star}$, it is a nontrivial cable knot in $S^{3}$. Though $t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)+1$, Example 1.1 in Section 1 shows that in some case, $ t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)$. So it is interesting to know when $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. After using some combinatorial techniques, we prove that (1) for any nontrivial cable knot $K^{\star}$ and its companion $K$, $t(K^{\star})\geq t(K)$; (2) if either $K$ admits a high distance Heegaard splitting or $p/q$ is far away from a fixed subset in the Farey graph, then $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. Using the second conclusion, we construct a satellite knot and its companion so that the difference between their tunnel numbers is arbitrary large.

Abstract:Closed 3$$3$$-string braids admit many bandings to two-bridge links. By way of the Montesinos Trick, this allows us to construct infinite families of knots in the connected sum of lens spaces L(r,1)#L(s,1)$$L(r,1) \# L(s,1)$$ that admit a surgery to a lens space for all pairs of integers (r,s)$$(r,s)$$ except (0,0)$$(0,0)$$. These knots are typically hyperbolic. We also demonstrate that the previously known two families of examples of hyperbolic knots in non-prime manifolds with lens space surgeries of Eudave-Muñoz–Wu and Kang all fit this construction. As such, we propose a generalization of the cabling conjecture of González-Acuña–Short for knots in lens spaces.

Abstract:Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

Abstract:Let K be a fibered knot in the 3-sphere. We show that if the monodromy of K is sufficiently complicated, then Dehn surgery on K cannot yield a lens space. Work of Yi Ni shows that if K has a lens space surgery then it is fibered. Combining this with our result we see that if K has a lens space surgery then it is fibered and the monodromy is relatively simple.

Abstract:It is proven here that if the connected sum of two tunnel number one knots in the 3-sphere is a tunnel number two knot, then at least one of the summand knots has a genus two Heegaard splitting with a meridian as a primitive element. Hence this is a necessary and sufficient condition for tunnel number one knots to have additive tunnel number.

Abstract:The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. In fact, we conjecture that one of our examples is a counterexample to Stoimenow's conjecture.

Abstract:For any (1,1)-knot in a lens space, we construct a co-oriented taut foliation in its complement that intersects the boundary torus transversely in a suspension foliation of the knot meridian, or the infinity slope. This provides new evidence for a conjecture made by Boyer, Gordon and Hu using slope detections, related to the L-space conjecture.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a satellite knot, link, or spatial graph in a 3-manifold $M$ that is either $S^3$ or a lens space. Let $b_0$ and $b_1$ denote genus 0 and genus 1 bridge number, respectively. Suppose that $T$ has a companion knot $K$ and wrapping number $\omega$ with respect to $K$. When $K$ is not a torus knot, we show that $b_1(T)\geq \omega b_1(K)$. There are previously known counter-examples if $K$ is a torus knot. Along the way, we generalize and give a new proof of Schubert's result that $b_0(T) \geq \omega b_0(K)$. We also prove versions of the theorem applicable to when $T$ is a ``lensed satellite'' or when there is a torus separating components of $T$.

Abstract:Extending Haken's Theorem to product annuli and disks for Heegaard splittings of sutured manifolds, we show that the handle number of an irreducible sutured manifold equals the handle number of its guts. We further show that reduced sutured manifolds with torus boundary contained in $S^3$ fall in to three types that generalize the three models of guts of knots that are nearly fibered in the instanton or Heegaard Floer sense. In conjunction with these results and another concerning uniqueness of incompressible Seifert surfaces, we show that while many nearly fibered knots have handle number $2$ and a unique incompressible Seifert surface, some have handle number $4$ and others have extra incompressible Seifert surfaces. Examples of nearly fibered knots with non-isotopic incompressible Seifert surfaces are exhibited.
