Abstract:We show that there are hyperbolic tunnel-number one knots with arbitrarily high bridge number and that "most" tunnel-number one knots are not one-bridge with respect to an unknotted torus. The proof relies on a connection between bridge number and a certain distance in the curve complex of a genus-two surface.

Abstract:This paper contains a brief discussion of an object evaluator which is based on principles of evaluations in a category. The main tool system referred as the Application Development Environment (ADE) is used to build database applications involving the graphical user interface (GUI). The separation of a database access and the user interface is reached by distinguishing the potential and actual objects. The variety of applications may be generated that communicate with different and distinct desktop databases. The commutative diagrams' technique allows to involve retrieval and call of the delayed procedures.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the following results of H. Schubert: If K is a satellite knot with companion J and pattern L that lies in a solid torus T in which it has index k, then the bridge numbers satisfy the following: 1) The bridge number of K is greater than or equal to the product of k and the bridge number of J; 2) If K is a composite knot (this is the case k = 1), then the bridge number of K is one less than the sum of the bridge numbers of J and L.

Abstract:For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an iterated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated constructions produce all the 2-bridge knots, giving a new calculation of the slope invariants of their tunnels. In the final section we compile a list of the known possibilities for the set of tunnels of a given tunnel number 1 knot.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a satellite knot, link, or spatial graph in a 3-manifold $M$ that is either $S^3$ or a lens space. Let $b_0$ and $b_1$ denote genus 0 and genus 1 bridge number, respectively. Suppose that $T$ has a companion knot $K$ and wrapping number $\omega$ with respect to $K$. When $K$ is not a torus knot, we show that $b_1(T)\geq \omega b_1(K)$. There are previously known counter-examples if $K$ is a torus knot. Along the way, we generalize and give a new proof of Schubert's result that $b_0(T) \geq \omega b_0(K)$. We also prove versions of the theorem applicable to when $T$ is a ``lensed satellite'' or when there is a torus separating components of $T$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a nontrivial knot in $S^{3}$ and $t(K)$ its tunnel number. For any $(p\geq 2,q)$-slope in the torus boundary of a closed regular neighborhood of $ K$ in $S^{3}$, denoted by $K^{\star}$, it is a nontrivial cable knot in $S^{3}$. Though $t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)+1$, Example 1.1 in Section 1 shows that in some case, $ t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)$. So it is interesting to know when $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. After using some combinatorial techniques, we prove that (1) for any nontrivial cable knot $K^{\star}$ and its companion $K$, $t(K^{\star})\geq t(K)$; (2) if either $K$ admits a high distance Heegaard splitting or $p/q$ is far away from a fixed subset in the Farey graph, then $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. Using the second conclusion, we construct a satellite knot and its companion so that the difference between their tunnel numbers is arbitrary large.

Abstract:An upper bound of the superbridge index of the connected sum of two knots is given in terms of the braid index of the summands. Using this upper bound and minimal polygonal presentations, we give an upper bound in terms of the superbridge index and the bridge index of the summands when they are torus knots. In contrast to the fact that the difference between the sum of bridge indices of two knots and the bridge index of their connected sum is always one, the corresponding difference for the superbridge index can be arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We determine the genus one fibered knots in lens spaces that have tunnel number one. We also show that every tunnel number one, once-punctured torus bundle is the result of Dehn filling a component of the Whitehead link in the 3-sphere.

Abstract:Let $k\subset S^3$ be a nontrivial knot. The Cabling Conjecture of Francisco González-Acuña and Hamish Short posits that $\pi$-Dehn surgery on $k$ produces a reducible manifold if and only if $k$ is a $(p,q)$-cable knot and the surgery slope $\pi$ equals $pq$. We extend the work of James Allen Hoffman to prove the Cabling Conjecture for knots with bridge number up to $5$.

Abstract:We introduce bridge trisections of knotted surfaces in the four-sphere. This description is inspired by the work of Gay and Kirby on trisections of four-manifolds and extends the classical concept of bridge splittings of links in the three-sphere to four dimensions. We prove that every knotted surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection (a decomposition into three simple pieces) and that any two bridge trisections for a fixed surface are related by a sequence of stabilizations and destabilizations. We also introduce a corresponding diagrammatic representation of knotted surfaces and describe a set of moves that suffice to pass between two diagrams for the same surface. Using these decompositions, we define a new complexity measure: the bridge number of a knotted surface. In addition, we classify bridge trisections with low complexity, we relate bridge trisections to the fundamental groups of knotted surface complements, and we prove that there exist knotted surfaces with arbitrarily large bridge number.

Abstract:Bridge multisections are combinatorial descriptions of surface links in 4-space using tuples of trivial tangles. They were introduced by Islambouli, Karimi, Lambert-Cole, and Meier to study curves in rational surfaces. In this paper, we prove a uniqueness result for bridge multisections of surfaces in 4-space: we give a complete set of moves relating to any two multiplane diagrams of the same surface. This is done by developing a surgery operation on multiplane diagrams called band surgery. Another application of this surgery move is that any $n$-valent graph with an $n$-edge coloring is the spine of a bridge multisection for an unknotted surface. We also prove that any multisected surface in $S^4$ can be unknotted by finitely many band surgeries.

Abstract:Motivated by the conjectured asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant, Dimofte and the first author introduced a power series associated to a suitable ideal triangulation of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, proved that its constant (1-loop) term is a topological invariant and conjectured that it equals to the adjoint Reidemeister torsion. We prove this conjecture for hyperbolic 2-bridge knots by combining the work of Ohtsuki--Takata with an explicit computation.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

Abstract:Rafi and Schleimer recently proved that the natural relation between curve complexes induced by a covering map between two surfaces is a quasi-isometric embedding. We offer another proof of this result using a distance estimate via hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We calculate the bridge distance for $m$-bridge knots/links in the $3$-sphere with sufficiently complicated $2m$-plat projections. In particular we show that if the underlying braid of the plat has $n - 1$ rows of twists and all its exponents have absolute value greater than or equal to three then the distance of the bridge sphere is exactly $\lceil n/(2(m - 2)) \rceil$, where $\lceil x \rceil$ is the smallest integer greater than or equal to $x$. As a corollary, we conclude that if such a diagram has more than $4m(m-2)$ rows then the bridge sphere defining the plat projection is the unique minimal bridge sphere for the knot.

Abstract:In this work, we find a closed form formula for the braid index of an $n$-bridge braid, a class of positive braid knots which simultaneously generalizes torus knots, 1-bridge braids, and twisted torus knots. Our proof is elementary, effective, and self-contained, and partially recovers work of Birman--Kofman. Along the way, we show that the disparate definitions of twisted torus knots in the literature agree.

Abstract:We show that the average or expected absolute value of the signatures of all 2-bridge knots with crossing number $c$ approaches $\sqrt{{2c}/{\pi}}$. Baader, Kjuchukova, Lewark, Misev, and Ray consider a model for 2-bridge knot diagrams indexed by diagrammatic crossing number $n$ and show that the average 4-genus is sublinear in $n$. We build upon this result in two ways to obtain an upper bound for the average 4-genus of a 2-bridge knot: our model is indexed by crossing number $c$ and gives a specific sublinear upper bound of $9.75c/\log c$.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>We study methods for computing the bridge number of a knot from a knot diagram. We prove equivalence between a geometric and a combinatorial definition of the bridge number of a knot diagram. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.</p>
