Abstract:We give a closed formula for the volume of a two-bridge knot, more precisely for its Bloch invariant. We obtain this formula without triangulating the complement: instead, we derive it from the Hopf formula for the second homology of the fundamental group of the complement and a systematic use of Fox derivatives.

Abstract:We study the equivariant concordance classes of two-bridge knots, providing an easy formula to compute their butterfly polynomial, and we give two different proofs that no two-bridge knot is equivariantly slice. Finally, we introduce a new invariant of equivariant concordance for strongly invertible knots. Using this invariant as an obstruction we strengthen the result on two-bridge knots, proving that their equivariant concordance order is always infinite.

Abstract:In this paper, we find a more straightforward problem that is equivalent to one of the major challenges in knot theory: the classification of links in the 3-sphere. More precisely, we provide a simpler braid description for all links in the 3-sphere in terms of generalised T-links. With this, we translate the problem of classifying links in the 3-sphere into a problem of counting the number of generalised T-links that represent the same link. Generalised T-links are a natural generalisation of twisted torus links and Lorenz links, two families of links that have been extensively studied by many people. Moreover, we generalise the bunch algorithm to construct links embedded in universal Lorenz-like templates and provide an upper volume bound that is quadratic in the trip number. We use the upper bound obtained from the generalised bunch algorithm for generalised T-links to establish an upper bound for the sum of the volumes of the hyperbolic pieces of all closed, orientable, connected 3-manifolds.

Abstract:For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their construction and calculated the slope invariants for the resulting examples. We give an iterated version of the construction that produces many more examples, and calculate their slope invariants. If one starts with the trivial knot, the iterated constructions produce all the 2-bridge knots, giving a new calculation of the slope invariants of their tunnels. In the final section we compile a list of the known possibilities for the set of tunnels of a given tunnel number 1 knot.

Abstract:In recent years, several families of hyperbolic knots have been shown to have both volume and $\lambda_1$ (first eigenvalue of the Laplacian) bounded in terms of the twist number of a diagram, while other families of knots have volume bounded by a generalized twist number. We show that for general knots, neither the twist number nor the generalized twist number of a diagram can provide two-sided bounds on either the volume or $\lambda_1$. We do so by studying the geometry of a family of hyperbolic knots that we call double coil knots, and finding two-sided bounds in terms of the knot diagrams on both the volume and on $\lambda_1$. We also extend a result of Lackenby to show that a collection of double coil knot complements forms an expanding family iff their volume is bounded.

Abstract:By examining knot Floer homology, we extend a result of Ozsváth and Stipsicz and show further infinitely many Legendrian and transversely non-simple knot types among two-bridge knots. We give sufficient conditions of Legendrian and transverse non-simplicity on the continued fraction expansion of the corresponding rational number.

Abstract:We show that there are hyperbolic tunnel-number one knots with arbitrarily high bridge number and that "most" tunnel-number one knots are not one-bridge with respect to an unknotted torus. Abstract:We prove an integral surgery formula for framed instanton homology $I^\sharp(Y_m(K))$ for any knot $K$ in a $3$-manifold $Y$ with $[K]=0\in H_1(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ and $m\neq 0$. Though the statement is similar to Ozsváth-Szabó's integral surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology, the proof is new and based on sutured instanton homology $SHI$ and the octahedral lemma in the derived category. As a corollary, we obtain an exact triangle between $I^\sharp(Y_m(K))$, $I^\sharp(Y_{m+k}(K))$ and $k$ copies of $I^\sharp(Y)$ for any $m\neq 0$ and large $k$. In the proof of the formula, we discover many new exact triangles for sutured instanton homology and relate some surgery cobordism map to the sum of bypass maps, which are of independent interest. In a companion paper, we derive many applications and computations based on the integral surgery formula.

Abstract:In this work, we find a closed form formula for the braid index of an $n$-bridge braid, a class of positive braid knots which simultaneously generalizes torus knots, 1-bridge braids, and twisted torus knots. Our proof is elementary, effective, and self-contained, and partially recovers work of Birman--Kofman. Along the way, we show that the disparate definitions of twisted torus knots in the literature agree.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 33, Issue 08, July 2024. We obtain a localized version of the configuration space integral for the Casson knot invariant, where the standard symmetric Gauss form is replaced with a locally supported form. An interesting technical difference between the arguments presented here and the classical arguments is that the vanishing of integrals over hidden and anomalous faces does not require the well-known "involution tricks". The integral formula easily yields the well-known arrow diagram expression for regular knot diagrams, first presented in the work by Polyak and Viro. Moreover, it yields an arrow diagram count for the multicrossing knot diagrams, such as petal diagrams and gives a new lower bound for the übercrossing number. Previously, the known arrow diagram formulas were applicable only to the regular knot diagrams.

Abstract:Motivated by the conjectured asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant, Dimofte and the first author introduced a power series associated to a suitable ideal triangulation of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, proved that its constant (1-loop) term is a topological invariant and conjectured that it equals to the adjoint Reidemeister torsion. We prove this conjecture for hyperbolic 2-bridge knots by combining the work of Ohtsuki--Takata with an explicit computation.

Abstract:We give a purely combinatorial proof of a Künneth formula for the minus version of knot Floer homology of connected sums by constructing a quasi-isomorphism of grid chain complexes. The quasi-isomorphism naturally deduces that the Legendrian and transverse invariants behave functorially with respect to the connected sum operation.

Abstract:An upper bound of the superbridge index of the connected sum of two knots is given in terms of the braid index of the summands. Using this upper bound and minimal polygonal presentations, we give an upper bound in terms of the superbridge index and the bridge index of the summands when they are torus knots. In contrast to the fact that the difference between the sum of bridge indices of two knots and the bridge index of their connected sum is always one, the corresponding difference for the superbridge index can be arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We describe a new method for combinatorially computing the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology. Previous work of the authors and Stone used braid diagrams to combinatorially compute knot Floer homology of braid closures. However, that approach was unable to explicitly identify the invariant of transverse links that naturally appears in braid diagrams. In this paper, we improve the previous approach in order to compute the transverse invariant. We define a new combinatorial complex that computes knot Floer homology and identify the BRAID invariant of transverse knots and links in the homology of this complex.
