Abstract:We complete the first step in a two-part program proposed by Baker, Grigsby, and the author to prove that Berge's construction of knots in the three-sphere which admit lens space surgeries is complete. The first step, which we prove here, is to show that a knot in a lens space with a three-sphere surgery has simple (in the sense of rank) knot Floer homology. The second (conjectured) step involves showing that, for a fixed lens space, the only knots with simple Floer homology belong to a simple finite family. Using results of Baker, we provide evidence for the conjectural part of the program by showing that it holds for a certain family of knots. Coupled with work of Ni, these knots provide the first infinite family of non-trivial knots which are characterized by their knot Floer homology. As another application, we provide a Floer homology proof of a theorem of Berge.

Abstract:We prove that for hyperbolic fibered knots in any closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold the volume and genus are unrelated. As an application we answer a question of Hirose, Kalfagianni, and Kin about volumes of mapping tori that are double branched covers.

Abstract:Dehn surgery on a knot determines a dual knot in the surgered manifold, the core of the filling torus. We consider duals of knots in $S^3$ that have a lens space surgery. Each dual supports a contact structure. We show that if a universally tight contact structure is supported, then the dual is in the same homology class as the dual of a torus knot.

Abstract:Divide knots and links, defined by A'Campo in the singularity theory of complex curves, is a method to present knots or links by real plane curves. The present paper is a continuation of the author's previous result that every knot in the major subfamilies of Berge's lens space surgery (i.e., knots yielding a lens space by Dehn surgery) is presented by an L-shaped curve as a divide knot. In the present paper, L-shaped curves are generalized and it is shown that every knot in the minor subfamilies, called sporadic examples, of Berge's lens space surgery is presented by a generalized L-shaped curve as a divide knot. A formula on the surgery coefficients and the presentation is also generalized.

Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

Abstract:Abstract We study closed connected orientable 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along the oriented components of a link, introduced and considered by Motegi and Song (2005) and Ichihara et al. (2008). For such manifolds, we find a finite balanced group presentation of the fundamental group and describe exceptional surgeries. This allows us to construct an infinite family of tunnel number one strongly invertible hyperbolic knots with three parameters, which admit toroidal surgeries and Seifert fibered surgeries. Among the obtained results, we mention that for every integer $$n >5$$ n > 5 there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3–sphere, whose $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) and $$(n+1)$$ ( n + 1 ) -surgeries are toroidal, and $$(n-1)$$ ( n - 1 ) and n -surgeries are Seifert fibered.

Abstract:The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulus increases.

Abstract:A Seifert surgery is an integral surgery on a knot in S^3 producing a Seifert fiber space which may contain an exceptional fiber of index 0. The Seifert Surgery Network is a 1-dimensional complex whose vertices correspond to Seifert surgeries; its edges correspond to single twistings along "seiferters" or "annular pairs of seiferters". One problem of the network is whether there is a path from each vertex to a vertex on a torus knot, the most basic Seifert surgery. We give a method to find seiferters and annular pairs of seiferters for Seifert surgeries obtained by taking two--fold branched covers of tangles. Concerning three infinite families of Seifert surgeries obtained by the second author via branched covers, we find explicit paths in the network from such surgeries to Seifert surgeries on torus knots.

Abstract:In an earlier paper, we used the absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology to give restrictions on knots in $S^3$ which admit lens space surgeries. The aim of the present article is to exhibit stronger restrictions on such knots, arising from knot Floer homology. One consequence is that all the non-zero coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of such a knot are $\pm 1$. This information in turn can be used to prove that certain lens spaces are not obtained as integral surgeries on knots. In fact, combining our results with constructions of Berge, we classify lens spaces $L(p,q)$ which arise as integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ with $|p|\leq 1500$. Other applications include bounds on the four-ball genera of knots admitting lens space surgeries (which are sharp for Berge's knots), and a constraint on three-manifolds obtained as integer surgeries on alternating knots, which is closely to related to a theorem of Delman and Roberts.

Abstract:Supose that $Y$ is a lens space with $|H_1(Y; \mathbb{Z})|$ prime, and $Y$ does not contain a genus one fibered knot. We show that $Y$ contains a knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle if and only if $Y$ is the result of $p/q$-surgery on the trefoil. This partially answers a question posed by Ken Baker in a paper in which he gives a complete classification of genus one fibered knots contained in lens spaces. Combining Baker's classification with Moser's characterization of lens space surgeries on the trefoil, we generate an infinite family of lens spaces which do not contain any knot whose exterior is a once-punctured torus bundle.
The search for alternating surgeries

Abstract:Surgery on a knot in $S^3$ is said to be an alternating surgery if it yields the double branched cover of an alternating link. The main theoretical contribution is to show that the set of alternating surgery slopes is algorithmically computable and to establish several structural results. Furthermore, we calculate the set of alternating surgery slopes for many examples of knots, including all hyperbolic knots in the SnapPy census. These examples exhibit several interesting phenomena including strongly invertible knots with a unique alternating surgery and asymmetric knots with two alternating surgery slopes. We also establish upper bounds on the set of alternating surgeries, showing that an alternating surgery slope on a hyperbolic knot satisfies $|p/q| \leq 3g(K)+4$. Notably, this bound applies to lens space surgeries, thereby strengthening the known genus bounds from the conjecture of Goda and Teragaito.

Abstract:In this paper, we find a more straightforward problem that is equivalent to one of the major challenges in knot theory: the classification of links in the 3-sphere. More precisely, we provide a simpler braid description for all links in the 3-sphere in terms of generalised T-links. With this, we translate the problem of classifying links in the 3-sphere into a problem of counting the number of generalised T-links that represent the same link. Generalised T-links are a natural generalisation of twisted torus links and Lorenz links, two families of links that have been extensively studied by many people. Moreover, we generalise the bunch algorithm to construct links embedded in universal Lorenz-like templates and provide an upper volume bound that is quadratic in the trip number. We use the upper bound obtained from the generalised bunch algorithm for generalised T-links to establish an upper bound for the sum of the volumes of the hyperbolic pieces of all closed, orientable, connected 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Closed 3$$3$$-string braids admit many bandings to two-bridge links. By way of the Montesinos Trick, this allows us to construct infinite families of knots in the connected sum of lens spaces L(r,1)#L(s,1)$$L(r,1) \# L(s,1)$$ that admit a surgery to a lens space for all pairs of integers (r,s)$$(r,s)$$ except (0,0)$$(0,0)$$. These knots are typically hyperbolic. We also demonstrate that the previously known two families of examples of hyperbolic knots in non-prime manifolds with lens space surgeries of Eudave-Muñoz–Wu and Kang all fit this construction. As such, we propose a generalization of the cabling conjecture of González-Acuña–Short for knots in lens spaces.

Abstract:We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular fibers. Some other obstructions are also presented for higher genus knots.

Abstract:T. Saito and M. Teragaito asked whether Berge knots of type VII are hyperbolic, and showed that some infinite sequences of the knots are hyperbolic. We show that Berge knots of types VII and VIII are hyperbolic except the known sequence of torus knots. We used the Reidemeister torsions. As a result, the Alexander polynomials of them have already shown their hyperbolicities. We also show that the standard parameters identify Berge knots of types VII and VIII, and study what kind of information identify them.

Abstract:Suppose F is a compact orientable surface, K is a knot in F x I, and N is the 3-manifold obtained by some non-trivial surgery on K. If F x {0} compresses in N, then there is an annulus in F x I with one end K and the other end an essential simple closed curve in F x {0}. Moreover, the end of the annulus at K determines the surgery slope. An application: suppose M is a compact orientable 3-manifold that fibers over the circle. If surgery on a knot K in M yields a reducible manifold, then either: the projection of K to S^1 has non-trivial winding number; or K lies in a ball; or K lies in a fiber; or K is a cabled knot.

Heegaard Floer Surgery Formula and Cosmetic Surgeries

Abstract:Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called cosmetic if they yield homeomorphic three-manifolds. We show for a certain family of null-homologous knots in any closed orientable three-manifold, if the knot admits cosmetic surgeries with a pair of positive surgery coefficients, then the coefficients are both greater than $1$. In addition, for this family of knots, we show that $1/q$ Dehn surgery for $q$ at least $2$ is not homeomorphic to the original three-manifold. The proofs of these results use the mapping cone formula for the Heegaard Floer homology of Dehn surgery in terms of the knot Floer homology of the knot; we provide a new proof of this formula for integer surgeries in $\text{Spin}^c$ structures with nontorsion first Chern class.
