Abstract:We use Maxima to compute the moment matrices of hypersurfaces. After that, we compute the Hilbert-Mumford numerical criterion for plane cubics and plane quartics, and give the stability of these curves.

Abstract:Let $(M^{n+1},g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $3\le n+1\le 5$. We show that, if the metric $g$ is generic or if the metric $g$ has positive Ricci curvature, then $M$ contains infinitely many geometrically distinct constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, each enclosing half the volume of $M$. As an essential part of the proof, we develop an Almgren-Pitts type min-max theory for certain non-local functionals of the general form $$\Omega \mapsto \operatorname{Area}(\partial \Omega) - \int_\Omega h + f(\operatorname{Vol}(\Omega)).$$

Abstract:We determine the generic multiplicative approximation rate on a hypersurface. There are four regimes, according to convergence or divergence and curved or flat, and we address all of them. Using geometry and arithmetic in Fourier space, we develop a general framework of moment transference principles, which convert Lebesgue data into data for some other measure.

Scanning the moduli of smooth hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Abstract:The motivation for this paper comes from the Halperin–Carlsson conjecture for (real) moment-angle complexes. We first give an algebraic combinatorics formula for the Möbius transform of an abstract simplicial complex K on [m]={1,…,m} in terms of the Betti numbers of the Stanley–Reisner face ring k(K) of K over a field k. We then employ a way of compressing K to provide the lower bound on the sum of those Betti numbers using our formula. Next we consider a class of generalized moment-angle complexes $\mathcal{Z}_{K}^{(\underline{\mathbb{ D}}, \underline{\mathbb{ S}})}$, including the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ and the real moment-angle complex $\mathbb{R}\mathcal {Z}_{K}$ as special examples. We show that $H^{*}(\mathcal{Z}_{K}^{(\underline{\mathbb{ D}}, \underline{\mathbb{ S}})};\mathbf{k})$ has the same graded k-module structure as Tor k[v](k(K),k). Finally we show that the Halperin–Carlsson conjecture holds for $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ (resp. $\mathbb{ R}\mathcal{Z}_{K}$) under the restriction of the natural T m -action on $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ (resp. (ℤ2) m -action on $\mathbb{ R}\mathcal{Z}_{K}$).

Abstract:In this paper, the first in a series, we study the deformed Hermitian–Yang–Mills (dHYM) equation from the variational point of view as an infinite dimensional GIT problem. The dHYM equation is mirror to the special Lagrangian equation, and our infinite dimensional GIT problem is mirror to Thomas’ GIT picture for special Lagrangians. This gives rise to infinite dimensional manifold $${\mathcal {H}}$$ closely related to Solomon’s space of positive Lagrangians. In the hypercritical phase case we prove the existence of smooth approximate geodesics, and weak geodesics with $$C^{1,\alpha }$$ regularity. This is accomplished by proving sharp with respect to scale estimates for the Lagrangian phase operator on collapsing manifolds with boundary. As an application of our techniques we give a simplified proof of Chen’s theorem on the existence of $$C^{1,\alpha }$$ geodesics in the space of Kähler metrics. In two follow up papers, these results will be used to examine algebraic obstructions to the existence of solutions to dHYM [26] and special Lagrangians in Landau–Ginzburg models [27].

Abstract:We prove that in a closed manifold of dimension between 3 and 7 with a bumpy metric, the min-max minimal hypersurfaces associated with the volume spectrum introduced by Gromov, Guth, Marques-Neves, are two-sided and have multiplicity one. This confirms a conjecture by Marques-Neves.

Abstract:Using McMullen's Hausdorff dimension algorithm, we study numerically the dimension of the limit set of groups generated by reflections along three geodesics on the hyperbolic plane. Varying these geodesics, we found four minima in the two-dimensional parameter space, leading to a rigorous result why this must be so. Extending the algorithm to compute the limit measure and its moments, we study orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle associated with this measure. Several numerical observations on certain coefficients related to these moments and on the zeros of the polynomials are discussed.

Abstract:For any second-order scalar PDE $\mathcal{E}$ in one unknown function, that we interpret as a hypersurface of a second-order jet space $J^2$, we construct, by means of the characteristics of $\mathcal{E}$, a sub-bundle of the contact distribution of the underlying contact manifold $J^1$, consisting of conic varieties. We call it the contact cone structure associated with $\mathcal{E}$. We then focus on symplectic Monge-Ampère equations in 3 independent variables, that are naturally parametrized by a 13-dimensional real projective space. If we pass to the field of complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$, this projective space turns out to be the projectivization of the 14-dimensional irreducible representation of the simple Lie group $\mathsf{Sp}(6,\mathbb{C})$: the associated moment map allows to define a rational map $\varpi$ from the space of symplectic 3D Monge-Ampère equations to the projectivization of the space of quadratic forms on a $6$-dimensional symplectic vector space. We study in details the relationship between the zero locus of the image of $\varpi$, herewith called the cocharacteristic variety, and the contact cone structure of a 3D Monge-Ampère equation $\mathcal{E}$: under the hypothesis of non-degenerate symbol, we prove that these two constructions coincide. A key tool in achieving such a result will be a complete list of mutually non-equivalent quadratic forms on a $6$-dimensional symplectic space, which has an interest on its own.

Abstract:We show that if a compact Kaehler manifold M of non-negative Ricci curvature admits closed Fedosov star product then the reduced Lie algebra of holomorphic vector fields on M is reductive. This comes in pair with the obstruction previously found by La Fuente-Gravy. More generally we consider the squared norm of Cahen-Gutt moment map as in the same spirit of Calabi functional for the scalar curvature in cscK problem, and prove a Cahen-Gutt version of Calabi's theorem on the structure of the Lie algebra of holomorphic vector fields for extremal Kaehler manifolds. The proof uses a Hessian formula for the squared norm of Cahen-Gutt moment map.

Abstract:We prove a finite-dimensional moment map property for certain canonical relatively Kähler metrics on holomorphic fibrations, called optimal symplectic connections. We then relate the existence of zeroes of this moment map to the stability of the fibration, where the stability property we consider is a version of K-stability that takes into account the fibration structure, first introduced by Dervan--Sektnan. In particular, we prove that a stable deformation of a fibration admitting an optimal symplectic connection still admits an optimal symplectic connection, through a new approach using the finite-dimensional moment map properties and the moment map flow. We include an appendix with a proof of a result considered by Székelyhidi that a K-polystable deformation of a constant scalar curvature Kähler manifold still admits a constant scalar curvature metric, using the same technique.

On triharmonic hypersurfaces in space forms

Abstract:In this paper we study triharmonic hypersurfaces immersed in a space form $N^{n+1}(c)$. We prove that any proper CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the sphere $\mathbb S^{n+1}$ has constant scalar curvature; any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^{n+1}$ is minimal. Moreover, we show that any CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ is minimal provided that the multiplicity of the principal curvature zero is at most one. In particular, we are able to prove that every CMC triharmonic hypersurface in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{6}$ is minimal.These results extend some recent works due to Montaldo-Oniciuc-Ratto and Chen-Guan, and give affirmative answer to the generalized Chen's conjecture.

Abstract:We exhibit the first set of examples of non-bumpy metrics on the $(n+1)$-sphere ($2\leq n\leq 6$) in which the varifold associated with the two-parameter min-max construction must be a multiplicity-two minimal $n$-sphere. This is proved by a new area-and-separation estimate for certain minimal hypersurfaces with Morse index two inspired by an early work of Colding-Minicozzi. We also construct non-bumpy projective spaces in which the first min-max hypersurfaces are one-sided, and non-bumpy balls in which the free boundary min-max hypersurfaces are improper.

Unexpected loss of maximality: the case of Hilbert square of real surfaces

Abstract:We explore the maximality of the Hilbert square of maximal real surfaces, and find that in many cases the Hilbert square is maximal if and only if the surface has connected real locus. In particular, the Hilbert square of no maximal K3-surface is maximal. Nevertheless, we exhibit maximal surfaces with disconnected real locus whose Hilbert square is maximal.

Abstract:We stratify families of projective and very affine hypersurfaces according to their topological Euler characteristic. Our new algorithms compute all strata using algebro-geometric techniques. For very affine hypersurfaces, we investigate and exploit the relation to critical point computations. Euler stratifications are relevant in particle physics and algebraic statistics. They fully describe the dependence of the number of master integrals, respectively the maximum likelihood degree, on kinematic or model parameters.

Abstract:The n-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the (n+1)-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmannmanifold of oriented 2-planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper, we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by using the moment map technique. Moreover we determine the Hamiltonian stability of compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as Gauss images of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g(= 1, 2, 3) distinct principal curvatures.
