Abstract:We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin–Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.

Abstract:In this paper we re-visit the standard principle that if a geometric nonlinear PDE problem is set up in the moment map picture then the existence of the solution to the PDE should be related to GIT stability in algebraic geometry. We also take up Kähler metrics with constant Cahen–Gutt moment map and an extension of conformally Kähler, Einstein-Maxwell metrics.

Abstract:We introduce a geometric approach to the construction of moment maps in finite and infinite-dimensional complex geometry. We apply this to two settings: Kähler manifolds and holomorphic vector bundles. Our new approach exploits the existence of universal families and the theory of equivariant differential forms. For Kähler manifolds we give a new, geometric proof of Donaldson-Fujiki's moment map interpretation of the scalar curvature. Associated to arbitrary products of Chern classes of the manifold - namely to a central charge - we further introduce a geometric PDE determining a $Z$-critical Kähler metric, and show that these general equations also satisfy moment map properties. For holomorphic vector bundles, using a similar strategy we give a geometric proof of Atiyah-Bott's moment map interpretation of the Hermitian Yang-Mills condition. We then go on to give a new, geometric proof that the PDE determining a $Z$-critical connection - again associated to a choice of central charge - can be viewed as a moment map; deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills connections are a special case, in which our work gives a geometric proof of a result of Collins-Yau. Our main assertion is that this is the canonical way of producing moment maps in complex geometry - associated to any geometric problem along with a choice of stability condition - and hence that this accomplishes one of the main steps towards producing PDE counterparts to stability conditions in large generality.

Abstract:We are interested in the geometry of the group $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ of diffeomorphisms preserving a contact form $\theta$ on a manifold $M$. We define a Riemannian metric on $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, compute the corresponding geodesic equation, and show that solutions exist for all time and depend smoothly on initial conditions. In certain special cases (such as on the 3-sphere), the geodesic equation is a simplified version of the quasigeostrophic equation, so we obtain a new geodesic interpretation of this geophysical system. We also show that the genuine quasigeostrophic equation on $S^2$ can be obtained as an Euler-Arnold equation on a one-dimensional central extension of $T_{\id}\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, and that our global existence result extends to this case. If $E$ is the Reeb field of $\theta$ and $\mu$ is the volume form, assumed compatible in the sense that $\text{div} E=0$, we show that $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ is a smooth submanifold of $\mathcal{D}_{E,\mu}(M)$, the space of diffeomorphisms preserving the vector field $E$ and the volume form $\mu$, in the sense of $H^s$ Sobolev completions. The latter manifold is related to symmetric motion of ideal fluids. We further prove that the corresponding geodesic equations and projections are $C^{\infty}$ objects in the Sobolev topology.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a closed, connected and orientable Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Consider a Lagrangian $L(x,v):TM\to\R$ defined by $L(x,v):=\frac 12g_x(v,v)-\omega(v)+c$, where $c\in\R$ and $\omega$ is a closed 1-form. From the perspective of differential geometry, we estimate the Laplacian of the weak KAM solution $u$ to the associated Hamilton-Jacobi equation $H(x,du)=c[L]$ in the barrier sense. This analysis enables us to prove that each weak KAM solution $u$ is constant if and only if $\omega$ is a harmonic 1-form. Furthermore, we explore several applications to the Mather quotient and Mañé's Lagrangian.

Abstract:We construct a quantization of the moduli space of maximal globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metrics on with constant sectional curvature , for a punctured surface S . Although this moduli space is known to be symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of S independently of the value of , we define geometrically natural classes of observables leading to -dependent quantizations. Using special coordinate systems, we first view as the set of points of a cluster -variety valued in the ring of generalized complex numbers . We then develop an -version of the quantum theory for cluster -varieties by establishing -versions of the quantum dilogarithm function. As a consequence, we obtain three families of projective unitary representations of the mapping class group of S . For these representations recover those of Fock and Goncharov, while for the representations are new.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of global moment maps to local moment maps, whose different branches are labelled by the elements of the fundamental group of the underlying symplectic manifold. These branches can be smoothly glued together by employing fundamental-group-valued \u Cech cocycles on the phase space. In the course of this work we prove a couple of theorems on the liftability of group actions to symplectic covering spaces, and examine the possible extensions of the original group by the fundamental group of the quotient phase space. It it shown how the splitting of multiplets, this being a consequence of the multiply-connectedness of the quotient phase space, can be described by identification maps on a space of multiplets derived from a symplectic universal covering manifold. The states that are identified in this process are related by certain integrals over non-contractible loops in the quotient phase space.

Abstract:We derive the geometric quantization program of symplectic manifolds, in the sense of both Kostant-Souriau and Weinstein, from Feynman's path integral formulation on phase space. The state space we use contains states with negative norm and polarized sections determine a Hilbert space. We discuss ambiguities in the definition of path integrals arising from the distinct Riemann sum prescriptions and its consequence on the quantization of symplectomorphisms.

A Moment Map for the Space of Maps to a Balanced Manifold

Abstract:Given a complex balanced manifold $X$ and a compact complex manifold $S$ equipped with a positive volume form $dV>0$ and satisfying an extra condition such that $\mbox{dim}\,S\geq\mbox{dim}\,X -1$, we construct a moment map for the action of the Lie group of biholomorphisms of $S$ that preserve $dV$ onto the space of holomorphic maps $f:S\longrightarrow X$ that satisfy a certain condition with respect to the Bott-Chern cohomology class of the balanced metric of $X$. The purpose is twofold: to study such maps as a possible addition to some very recent hyperbolicity notions involving holomorphic maps with a certain type of growth from some $\C^p$, rather than $S$, to $X$; and to lay the groundwork for a possible future construction of balanced quotients as an analogue of the classical symplectic quotients.

Abstract:In this paper, the first in a series, we study the deformed Hermitian–Yang–Mills (dHYM) equation from the variational point of view as an infinite dimensional GIT problem. The dHYM equation is mirror to the special Lagrangian equation, and our infinite dimensional GIT problem is mirror to Thomas’ GIT picture for special Lagrangians. This gives rise to infinite dimensional manifold $${\mathcal {H}}$$ closely related to Solomon’s space of positive Lagrangians. In the hypercritical phase case we prove the existence of smooth approximate geodesics, and weak geodesics with $$C^{1,\alpha }$$ regularity. This is accomplished by proving sharp with respect to scale estimates for the Lagrangian phase operator on collapsing manifolds with boundary. As an application of our techniques we give a simplified proof of Chen’s theorem on the existence of $$C^{1,\alpha }$$ geodesics in the space of Kähler metrics. In two follow up papers, these results will be used to examine algebraic obstructions to the existence of solutions to dHYM [26] and special Lagrangians in Landau–Ginzburg models [27].

Abstract: In the first part of this paper we outline the constructions and properties of Fedosov star product and Berezin-Toeplitz star product. In the second part we outline the basic ideas and recent developments on Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture on the existence of K\"ahler metrics of constant scalar curvature. In the third part of the paper we outline recent results of both authors, and in particular show that the constant scalar curvature K\"ahler metric problem and the study of deformation quantization meet at the notion of trace (density) for star product. We formulate a cohomology formula for the invariant of K-stability condition on K\"ahler metrics with constant Cahen-Gutt momentum.

Abstract:Let G be a compact connected Lie group, (X,ω,μ) a Hamiltonian G-manifold with moment map μ, and Z a codimension-2 Hamiltonian G-submanifold of X. We study the boundedness of the differential of symplectic vortices (A,u) near Z, where A is a connection 1-form of a principal G-bundle P over a punctured Riemann surface Σ ̊, and u is a G-equivariant map from P to an open cylinder model near Z. We show that if the total energy of a family of symplectic vortices on Σ ̊≅[0,+∞)×S1 is finite, then the A-twisted differential dAu(r,θ) is uniformly bounded for all (r,θ)∈[0,+∞)×S1.

Abstract:For a compact monotone symplectic manifold $X$ with Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group $G$ and smooth symplectic reduction, we relate its gauged $2$-dimensional $A$-model to the $A$-model of $X/\!/G$. This (long conjectured) result is parallel to the ($B$-model!) \emph{quantization commutes with reduction} theorem of Guillemin and Sternberg in quantum mechanics. Here, we spell out some of the precise statements, and outline the proof of equality for the spaces of states (quantum cohomology). We also indicate the way to some related results in the non-monotone case. Additional Floer theory details will be included in a follow-up paper.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of isotropic maps from a closed surface $\Sigma$ to a symplectic affine space and construct a Kähler moment map geometry, on a space of differential forms on $\Sigma$, such that the isotropic maps correspond to certain zeroes of the moment map. The moment map geometry induces a modified moment map flow, whose fixed point set correspond to isotropic maps. This construction can be adapted to the polyhedral setting. In particular, we prove that the polyhedral modified moment map flow induces a strong deformation retraction from the space of polyhedral maps onto the space of polyhedral isotropic maps.
