Abstract:We stratify families of projective and very affine hypersurfaces according to their topological Euler characteristic. Our new algorithms compute all strata using algebro-geometric techniques. For very affine hypersurfaces, we investigate and exploit the relation to critical point computations. Euler stratifications are relevant in particle physics and algebraic statistics. They fully describe the dependence of the number of master integrals, respectively the maximum likelihood degree, on kinematic or model parameters.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about how to stratify projective and very affine hypersurfaces according to the topological Euler characteristic. Specifically, the author studied how the Euler characteristic of these hypersurfaces depends on the coefficients of the defining polynomials and developed new algorithms to calculate all these stratifications.
### Specific description of the problem
1. **Research background**:
- A non - zero homogeneous polynomial \(F\in\mathbb{C}[x_0,\ldots,x_d]\) defines an algebraic hypersurface \(V(F)\subset\mathbb{P}^d\).
- Researchers are concerned with how the topological Euler characteristic \(\chi(V(F))\) of this hypersurface depends on the coefficients of \(F\).
- More specifically, consider a parameterized hypersurface family \(V(F(x,z))\subset\mathbb{P}^d\times Z\), where \(Z\) is an irreducible variety.
2. **Objectives**:
- Calculate and describe the regions in \(Z\) where the hypersurfaces defined by \(F\) have a given Euler characteristic.
- The Euler stratification decomposes \(Z\) into such regions, and the hypersurfaces within each region have the same Euler characteristic.
3. **Methods**:
- Use algebraic geometry techniques to develop new algorithms to calculate all stratifications.
- For very affine hypersurfaces, study their relationship with critical point calculations.
- Propose and prove some key results, such as the existence and construction method of the Euler stratification.
4. **Application areas**:
- Euler stratification is very important in particle physics and algebraic statistics.
- They fully describe the dependence of the number of master integrals or the maximum likelihood degree on kinematic or model parameters.
### Example illustration
For example, for a general binary quadratic polynomial \(F(x_0,x_1,x_2,z)=z_0x_0^2 + z_1x_0x_1+z_2x_0x_2+z_3x_1^2+z_4x_1x_2+z_5x_2^2\), the Euler characteristic of the curve \(V(F(x,z))\) can be 2 or 3, depending on whether \(F\) is smooth or is the union of two different lines. These cases can be determined by the rank condition of the matrix \(M(z)\).
### Summary
The main contribution of this paper is to propose a new algebraic - geometry - based method to calculate and describe the Euler stratification of hypersurface families, thereby better understanding the topological properties of hypersurfaces and their parameter - dependence relationships. This is not only helpful for theoretical research but also has important value in practical applications.
