Abstract:Suppose $\delta$ is a generic immersed closed curve in the boundary of a 3-manifold M and $\delta$ is null-homotopic in M. Then $\delta$ can be displaced by a height function in a collar of the boundary so that the resulting simple closed curve in the collar bounds a disk in M.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a proper essential immersed surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary disjoint from a torus boundary component $T$ of $M$. Let $\alpha$ be the set of coannular slopes of $F$ on $T$. The main theorem of the paper shows that there is a constant $K$ and a finite set of slopes $\Lambda$ on $T$, such that if $\beta$ is a slope on $T$ with $\Delta(\beta, \alpha_i) > K$ for all $\alpha_i$ in $\alpha$, and $\beta$ is not in $\Lambda$, then $F$ remains incompressible after Dehn filling on $T$ along the slope $\beta$. In certain sense, this means that $F$ survives most Dehn fillings. The proof uses minimal surface theory, integral of differential forms, and properties of geometrically finite groups. As a consequence of our method, it will also be shown that Freedman tubings of immersed geometrically finite surfaces are essential if the tubes are long enough.

Bounds on Volume Increase under Dehn Drilling Operations

Abstract:In this paper we investigate how the volume of hyperbolic manifolds increases under the process of removing a curve, that is, Dehn drilling. If the curve we remove is a geodesic we are able to show that for a certain family of manifolds the volume increase is bounded above by $\pi \cdot l$ where $l$ is the length of the geodesic drilled. Also we construct examples to show that there is no lower bound to the volume increase in terms of a linear function of a positive power of length and in particular volume increase is not bounded linearly in length.

Abstract:We extend previous work on the two-dimensional developable tangent surface to its higher dimensional analogues $\mathfrak{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. The approach here similarly applies cylindrical approximate decoupling at its core, albeit in a new format. However, the presence of additional rulings as $n$ increases necessitates a case-by-case analysis, which in itself reveals interesting aspects of the geometry of $\mathfrak{M}$. The contributions of this paper can be viewed as culminating in the optimal $\ell^2(L^p)$ decoupling over Frenet boxes approximating a suitably defined, arbitrarily thin neighborhood of a curve $\phi$.

Abstract:Suppose that A1 is a class of analytic functions f:D={z∈C:|z|<1}→C with normalization f(0)=1. Consider two functions Pl(z)=1+z and ΦNe(z)=1+z−z3/3, which map the boundary of D to a cusp of lemniscate and to a twi-cusped kidney-shaped nephroid curve in the right half plane, respectively. In this article, we aim to construct functions f∈A0 for which (i) f(D)⊂Pl(D)∩ΦNe(D) (ii) f(D)⊂Pl(D), but f(D)⊄ΦNe(D) (iii) f(D)⊂ΦNe(D), but f(D)⊄Pl(D). We validate the results graphically and analytically. To prove the results analytically, we use the concept of subordination. In this process, we establish the connection lemniscate (and nephroid) domain and functions, including gα(z):=1+αz2, |α|≤1, the polynomial gα,β(z):=1+αz+βz3, α,β∈R, as well as Lerch's transcendent function, Incomplete gamma function, Bessel and Modified Bessel functions, and confluent and generalized hypergeometric functions.

Discrete Differential Geometry for $C^{1,1}$ Hyperbolic Surfaces of Non-Constant Curvature

Abstract:We develop a discrete differential geometry for surfaces of non-constant negative curvature, which can be used to model various phenomena from the growth of flower petals to marine invertebrate swimming. Specifically, we derive and numerically integrate a version of the classical Lelieuvre formulas that apply to immersions of $C^{1,1}$ hyperbolic surfaces of non-constant curvature. In contrast to the constant curvature case, these formulas do not provide an explicit method for constructing an immersion but rather describe an immersion via an implicit set of equations. We propose an iterative method for resolving these equations. Because we are interested in scenarios where the curvature is a function of the intrinsic material coordinates, in particular, on the geodesic distance from an origin, we suggest a fast marching method for computing geodesic distance on manifolds. We apply our methods to generate surfaces of non-constant curvature and demonstrate how one can introduce branch points to account for the sort of multi-generational buckling and subwrinkling observed in many applications.

Abstract:We study maximal stretch laminations associated to certain best Lipschitz circle valued maps in Dehn surgery families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. For these maps, we give a criterion based on the Thurston norm and Dehn filling slope length to determine when such a stretch lamination is a union of Dehn filling core curves. We use this to show there exist infinitely many examples where the homotopy class of the circle valued map includes a fibration and where the laminations have only closed leaves. This gives information about non-maximal horospherical orbit closures in the infinite cyclic covers associated to these fibrations.

The shape of hyperbolic Dehn surgery space

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new theory of infinitesimal harmonic deformations for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with ``tubular boundary''. In particular, this applies to complements of tubes of radius at least $R_0 = \arctanh(1/\sqrt{3}) \approx 0.65848$ around the singular set of hyperbolic cone manifolds, removing the previous restrictions on cone angles. We then apply this to obtain a new quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem, showing that all generalized Dehn surgery coefficients outside a disc of ``uniform'' size yield hyperbolic structures. Here the size of a surgery coefficient is measured using the Euclidean metric on a horospherical cross section to a cusp in the complete hyperbolic metric, rescaled to have area 1. We also obtain good estimates on the change in geometry (e.g. volumes and core geodesic lengths) during hyperbolic Dehn filling. This new harmonic deformation theory has also been used by Bromberg and his coworkers in their proofs of the Bers Density Conjecture for Kleinian groups.

Abstract:It is Thurston’s result that for a hyperbolic knot K in S 3 , almost all Dehn fillings on its complement result in hyperbolic 3-manifolds except some exceptional cases. So almost all produced 3-manifolds have the same geometry. It is known that its complement in S 3 , denoted by E ( K ), admits a Heegaard splitting. Then it is expected that there is a similar result on Heegaard distance for Dehn fillings. In this paper, Dehn fillings on genus two Heegaard splittings are studied. More precisely, we prove that if the distance of a given genus two Heegaard splitting of E ( K ) is at least 3, then for any two degenerating slopes on ∂E ( K ), there is a universal bound of their distance in the curve complex of ∂E ( K ).
Holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains

Abstract:We prove several results on approximation and interpolation of holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, with the standard contact structure. Namely, we show that such a curve, defined on a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$, whose image lies in the interior of a convex domain $\mathscr{D} \subset \mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, may be approximated uniformly on compacts in the interior $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ by holomorphic Legendrian curves $\mathrm{Int} \, M \to \mathscr{D}$ such that the approximants are proper, complete, agree with the starting curve on a given finite set in $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ to a given finite order, and hit a specified diverging discrete set in the convex domain. We first show approximation of this kind on bounded strongly convex domains and then generalise it to arbitrary convex domains. As a consequence we show that any bordered Riemann surface properly embeds into a convex domain as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve under a suitable geometric condition on the boundary of the codomain.

Abstract:A closed 3-manifold $M$ may be described up to some indeterminacy by a Heegaard diagram $\mathcal{D}$. The question "Does $M$ smoothly embed in $\mathbb{R}^4$?'' is equivalent to a property of $\mathcal{D}$ which we call $\textit{doubly unlinked}$ (DU). This perspective leads to an enhancement of Hantzsche's embedding obstruction.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{C}^2$ be a smooth domain. We establish conditions under which a weakly conformal, branched $\Omega$-free boundary Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian immersion $u$ of a disc in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is a $\Omega$-free boundary minimal immersion. We deduce that if $u$ is a weakly conformal, branched $B_1(0)$-free boundary Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian immersion of a disc with Legendrian boundary data, then $u(D^2)$ must be a Lagrangian equatorial plane disc. We also present examples of $\Omega$-free boundary Hamiltonain stationary discs, demonstrating the optimality of our assumptions.

Abstract:We consider the evolution of a compact segment of an analytic curve on the unit tangent bundle of a finite volume hyperbolic $n$-manifold under the geodesic flow. Suppose that the curve is not contained in a stable leaf of the flow. It is shown that under the geodesic flow, the normalized parameter measure on the curve gets asymptotically equidistributed with respect to the normalized natural Riemannian measure on the unit tangent bundle of a closed totally geodesically immersed submanifold. Moreover, if this immersed submanifold is a proper subset, then a lift of the curve to the universal covering space $T^1(H^n)$ is mapped into a proper subsphere of the ideal boundary sphere $\partial H^n$ under the visual map. This proper subsphere can be realized as the ideal boundary of an isometrically embedded hyperbolic subspace in $H^n$ covering the closed immersed submanifold. In particular, if the visual map does not send a lift of the curve into a proper subsphere of $\partial H^n$, then under the geodesic flow the curve gets asymptotically equidistributed on the unit tangent bundle of the manifold with respect to the normalized natural Riemannian measure. The proof uses dynamical properties of unipotent flows on finite volume homogeneous spaces of SO(n,1).

Abstract:The celebrated Morlet-Burghelea-Lashof-Kirby-Siebenmann smoothing theory theorem states that the group $\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^n)$ of diffeomorphisms of a disc $D^n$ relative to the boundary is equivalent to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for any $n\geq 1$ and to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for $n\neq 4$. We revise smoothing theory results to show that the delooping generalizes to different versions of disc smooth embedding spaces relative to the boundary, namely the usual embeddings, those modulo immersions, and framed embeddings. The latter spaces deloop as $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)\simeq\Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{PL}_{n,m}\right)\simeq \Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{TOP}_{n,m}\right)$ for any $n\geq m\geq 1$ ($n\neq 4$ for the second equivalence), where the left-hand side in the case $n-m=2$ or $(n,m)=(4,3)$ should be replaced by the union of the path-components of $\mathrm{PL}$-trivial knots (framing being disregarded). Moreover, we show that for $n\neq 4$, the delooping is compatible with the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action. We use this delooping to combine the Hatcher $\mathrm{O}_{m+1}$-action and the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action into a framed little discs operad $E_{m+1}^{\mathrm{O}_{m+1}}$-action on $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)$.

Abstract:We show that the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma holds for the non-K\"ahler compact complex manifolds of dimension three with trivial canonical bundle constructed by Clemens as deformations of Calabi-Yau threefolds contracted along smooth rational curves with normal bundle of type $(-1, -1)$, at least on an open dense set in moduli. The proof uses the mixed Hodge structure on the singular fibers and an analysis of the variation of the Hodge filtration for the smooth fibers.

Abstract:Given any non-central interior point $o$ of the unit disc $D$, the diameter $L$ through $o$ is the union of two linear arcs emanating from $o$ which meet $\partial D$ orthogonally, the shorter of them stable and the longer unstable (under these boundary conditions). In each of the two half discs bounded by $L$, we construct a convex eternal solution to curve shortening flow which fixes $o$ and meets $\partial D$ orthogonally, and evolves out of the unstable critical arc at $t=-\infty$ and into the stable one at $t=+\infty$. We then prove that these two (congruent) solutions are the only non-flat convex ancient solutions to the curve shortening flow satisfying the specified boundary conditions. We obtain analogous conclusions in the "degenerate" case $o\in\partial D$ as well, although in this case the solution contracts to the point $o$ at a finite time with asymptotic shape that of a half Grim Reaper, thus providing an interesting example for which an embedded flow develops a collapsing singularity.

Abstract:The simple loop conjecture for 3-manifolds states that every 2-sided immersion of a closed surface into a 3-manifold is either injective on fundamental groups or admits a compression. This can be viewed as a generalization of the Loop Theorem to immersed surfaces. We prove the conjecture in the case that the target 3-manifold admits a geometric structure modeled on Sol.

Divergent geodesics in the Universal Teichmüller space

Abstract:Thurston boundary of the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{D})$ is the space $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$ of projective bounded measured laminations of $\mathbb{D}$. A geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{D})$ is of generalized Teichmüller type if it shrinks the vertical foliation of a holomorphic quadratic differential. We provide the first examples of generalized Teichmüller rays which diverge near Thurston boundary $PLM_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$. Moreover, for every $k\geq 1$ we construct examples of rays with limit sets homeomorphic to $k$-dimensional cubes. For the latter result we utilize the classical Kronecker approximation theorem from number theory which states that if $\theta_1,\ldots,\theta_k$ are rationally independent reals then the sequence $(\{\theta_1 n\},\ldots,\{\theta_k n\})$ is dense in the $k$-torus $\mathbb{T}^k$.

Effective hyperbolization and length bounds for Heegaard splittings

Abstract:We consider 3-manifolds given as Heegaard splittings $M=H^-\cup_\Sigma H^+$ with the aim to describe the hyperbolic metric of $M$ under topological conditions on the splitting guaranteeing that the manifold is hyperbolic. In particular, given a suitable "sufficiently incompressible" curve $\gamma\subset\Sigma$, we show (without appealing to Geometrization) that $M$ is hyperbolic and we compute the length of $\gamma$ in terms of the projection coefficients of the disk sets, up to a uniform multiplicative error.
