Abstract:A closed 3-manifold $M$ may be described up to some indeterminacy by a Heegaard diagram $\mathcal{D}$. The question "Does $M$ smoothly embed in $\mathbb{R}^4$?'' is equivalent to a property of $\mathcal{D}$ which we call $\textit{doubly unlinked}$ (DU). This perspective leads to an enhancement of Hantzsche's embedding obstruction.

Abstract:Let M be a compact, orientable, partial derivative-irreducible 3-manifold and F be a connected closed essential surface in M with g. (F) >= 1 which cuts M into M(1) and M(2). In the present paper, we show the following theorem: Suppose that there is no essential surface with boundary. (Q(i), partial derivative Q(i)) in (M(i), F) satisfying chi(Q(i)) > 2 + g(F) - 2g(M(i)), i = 1; 2. Then g (M) = g(M(1)) + g(M(2)) - g(F). As a consequence, we further show that if M(i) has a Heegaard splitting V(i)boolean OR(Si) W(i) with distance D(S(i)) >= 2g(M(i)) - g(F), i = 1; 2, then g(M) = g(M(1)) + g(M(2)) - g(F).The main results follow from a new technique which is a stronger version of Schultens' Lemma.

Abstract:Expanding on my former work along with the more recent work of Kasuya and Takase, we demonstrate that for a given link $L \subset M$ which is null-homologous in $H_1(M)$ and for any smooth oriented 2-plane field $\eta$ over $L$ there exists a smooth embedding $F:M \hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}^3$ so that the set of complex tangents to the embedding is exactly $L$ and at each $x \in L$ the holomorphic tangent space is exactly $\eta_x$. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the "analyticity" of a complex tangent, as given by the Bishop invariant, may be determined exactly from the angle formed between the holomorphic complex line and the the curve of complex tangents.

How to Depict 5-Dimensional Manifolds

Abstract:We usually think of 2-dimensional manifolds as surfaces embedded in Euclidean 3-space. Since humans cannot visualise Euclidean spaces of higher dimensions, it appears to be impossible to give pictorial representations of higher-dimensional manifolds. However, one can in fact encode the topology of a surface in a 1-dimensional picture. By analogy, one can draw 2-dimensional pictures of 3-manifolds (Heegaard diagrams), and 3-dimensional pictures of 4-manifolds (Kirby diagrams). With the help of open books one can likewise represent at least some 5-manifolds by 3-dimensional diagrams, and contact geometry can be used to reduce these to drawings in the 2-plane.In this paper, I shall explain how to draw such pictures and how to use them for answering topological and geometric questions. The work on 5-manifolds is joint with Fan Ding and Otto van Koert.

A characterization of Pfaffian embeddings from (2, 3, 5)- into flat (4, 7)-geometries

Abstract:Given two smooth manifolds with tangent subbundle distributions, an embedding is Pfaffian if its differential sends the distribution on the source into the distribution on the target. In this paper, we consider the question of existence of Pfaffian embeddings in the specific case where the source is a (2,3,5)-manifold, the target is the 7-dimensional space of isotropic 2-planes in a 6-dimensional symplectic vector space, and the Pfaffian condition is that the derived 3-distribution on the source be mapped into the natural 4-distribution on the target. This is one of the simpler non-trivial cases of the general question on existence of Pfaffian embeddings, but already the answer here requires solution of an interesting differential equation. It turns out that a generic (2,3,5)-manifold does not embed, the first obstruction being the fact that a Pfaffian embeddable (2,3,5)-manifold necessarily has a double root for its Cartan quartic at each point. We determine a complete characterization of embeddable (2,3,5)-manifolds in terms of their associated Cartan geometries, which characterization depends on higher order (non-harmonic) curvature as well.

Abstract:We describe an example of a closed orientable 3-manifold with distinct distance three genus two Heegaard splittings. This demonstrates that the constructions of alternate genus two Heegaard splittings of closed orientable 3-manifolds described by Rubinstein and Scharlemann in their 1998 paper Genus Two Heegaard Splittings of Orientable 3-Manifolds, does not yield all alternate genus two splittings and must be augmented.
Large magnetoresistance at room-temperature in small molecular weight organic semiconductor sandwich devices

Abstract:We present an extensive study of a large, room temperature negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect in tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. The effect is similar to that previously discovered in polymer devices. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on field direction, voltage, temperature, film thickness, and electrode materials. The MR effect reaches almost 10% at fields of approximately 10 mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field. Measuring the devices' current-voltage characteristics, we find that the current depends on the voltage through a power-law. We find that the magnetic field changes the prefactor of the power-law, whereas the exponent remains unaffected. We also studied the effect of the magnetic field on the electroluminescence (MEL) of the devices and analyze the relationship between MR and MEL. We find that the largest part of MEL is simply a consequence of a change in device current caused by the MR effect.

Abstract:Generalizing Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds and trisections of 4-manifolds, we consider multisections of higher-dimensional smooth (or PL) closed orientable manifolds, namely decompositions into 1-handlebodies whose subcollections intersect along 1-handlebodies, with global intersection a closed surface. With such a multisection one can associate a diagram. We prove that a multisection diagram determines a unique PL-manifold in all dimensions and a unique smooth manifold up to dimension 6. Further, we show that any closed orientable smooth 5-manifold admits a multisection.

Abstract:We investigate nicely embedded H--holomorphic maps into stable Hamiltonian three--manifolds. In particular we prove that such maps locally foliate and satisfy a no--first--intersection property. Using the compactness results of arXiv:0904.1603 we show that connected components of the space of such maps can be compactified if they contain a global surface of section. As an application we prove that any contact structure on a 3--manifold admits and H--holomorphic open book decomposition. This work is motivated by the program laid out by Abbas, Cieliebak and Hofer to give a proof to the Weinstein conjecture using holomorphic curves. The results in this paper, with the exception of the compactness statement, have been independently obtained by C. Abbas in arXiv:0907.3512.
Combed Trisection Diagrams and Non-Semisimple 4-Manifold Invariants

Abstract:Given a triple $H$ of (possibly non-semisimple) Hopf algebras equipped with pairings satisfying a set of properties, we describe a construction of an associated smooth, scalar invariant $\tau_H(X,\pi)$ of a simply connected, compact, oriented $4$-manifold $X$ and an open book $\pi$ on its boundary. This invariant generalizes an earlier semisimple version and is calculated using a trisection diagram $T$ for $X$ and a certain type of combing of the trisection surface. We explain a general calculation of this invariant for a family of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary called Stein nuclei, introduced by Yasui. After investigating many low-dimensional Hopf algebras up to dimension 11, we have not been able to find non-semisimple Hopf triples that satisfy the criteria for our invariant. Nonetheless, appropriate Hopf triples may exist outside the scope of our explorations.

Abstract:A standard fact about two incompressible surfaces in an irreducible 3-manifold is that one can move one of them by isotopy so that their intersection becomes $\pi_1$-injective. By extending it on the maps of some 3-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_n$-manifolds into 4-manifolds, we prove that any homotopy equivalence of 4-dimensional graph-manifolds with reduced graph-structures is homotopic to a diffeomorphism preserving the structures. The Dehn twist on a connected sum of two homology tori

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka shows that the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of two $K3$ surfaces is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. Their result requires that the manifolds are simply connected and the signature of one of them is $16 \mod 32$. We generalize the Pin$(2)$-equivariant family Bauer-Furuta invariant to nonsimply connected manifolds, and construct a refinement of this invariant. We use it to show that, if $X_1,X_2$ are two homology tori such that the determinants $r_1,r_2$ of them are odd, then the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of $X_1\# X_2$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity.

Abstract:In studying the "11/8-Conjecture" on the Geography Problem in 4-dimensional topology, Furuta proposed a question on the existence of Pin(2)-equivariant stable maps between certain representation spheres. In this paper, we present a complete solution to this problem by analyzing the Pin(2)-equivariant Mahowald invariants. As a geometric application of our result, we prove a "10/8+4"-Theorem. We prove our theorem by analyzing maps between certain finite spectra arising from BPin(2) and various Thom spectra associated with it. To analyze these maps, we use the technique of cell diagrams, known results on the stable homotopy groups of spheres, and the j-based Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.

Abstract:We construct a compact PL 5-manifold $M$ (with boundary) which is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of eleven 2-spheres, $\vee^{}_{1 1}S^2$, which is "spineless", meaning $M$ is not the regular neighborhood of any 2-complex PL embedded in $M$. We formulate a related question about the existence of exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds which is of interest in relation to the deformation conjecture for 2-complexes, also known as the generalized Andrews-Curtis conjecture.

Abstract:This note studies the Chern-Simons invariant of a closed oriented Riemannian 3-manifold M. The first achievement is to establish the formula CS(e) — CS($\tilde e$) = degA, where e and $\tilde e$ are two (global) frames of M, and A: M → SO(3) is the “difference” map. An interesting phenomenon is that the “jumps” of the Chern-Simons integrals for various frames of many 3-manifolds are at least two, instead of one. The second purpose is to give an explicit representation of CS(e +) and CS(e −), where e + and e − are the “left” and “right” quaternionic frames on M 3 induced from an immersion M 3 → E 4, respectively. Consequently we find many metrics on S 3 (Berger spheres) so that they can not be conformally embedded in E 4.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Abstract:We prove that a variety of examples of minimal complex surfaces admit exotic diffeomorphisms, providing the first known instances of exotic diffeomorphisms of irreducible 4-manifolds. We also give sufficient conditions for the boundary Dehn twist on a spin 4-manifold with $S^3$ boundary to be non-trivial in the relative mapping class group. This gives many new examples of non-trivial boundary Dehn twists.

Abstract:Consider a smooth $4$-manifold $X$ and a diffeomorphism $f : X \to X$. We give an obstruction in the form of an adjunction inequality for an embedded surface in $X$ to be isotopic to its image under $f$. It follows that the minimal genus of a surface representing a given homology class and which is isotopic to its image under $f$ is generally larger than the minimal genus without the isotopy condition. We give examples where the inequality is strict. We use our obstruction to construct examples of infinitely many embedded surfaces which are all continuously isotopic but mutually non-isotopic smoothly.
