Abstract:We describe a method for generating minimal hard prime surface-link diagrams. We extend the known examples of minimal hard prime classical unknot and unlink diagrams up to three components and generate figures of all minimal hard prime surface-unknot and surface-unlink diagrams with prime base surface components up to ten crossings.

Abstract:Inspired by a classic paper by Knuth, we revisit the problem of drawing flowcharts of loop-free algorithms, that is, degree-three series-parallel digraphs. Our drawing algorithms show that it is possible to produce Knuthian drawings of degree-three series-parallel digraphs with good aspect ratios and small numbers of edge bends.

Abstract:A visualized graph is a powerful tool for data analysis and synthesis tasks. In this case, the task of visualization constitutes not only in displaying vertices and edges according to the graph representation, but also in ensuring that the result is visually simple and comprehensible for a human. Thus, the visualization process involves solving several problems, one of which is the problem of constructing a topological drawing of a planar part of a non-planar graph with a minimum number of removed edges. In this manuscript, we consider a mathematical model for representing the topological drawing of a graph, which is based on methods of the theory of vertex rotation with the induction of simple cycles that satisfy the Mac Lane planarity criterion. It is shown that the topological drawing of a non-planar graph can be constructed on the basis of a selected planar part of the graph. The topological model of a graph drawing allows us to reduce the brute-force enumeration problem of identifying a plane graph to a discrete optimization problem - searching for a subset of the set of isometric cycles of the graph that satisfy the zero value of the Mac Lane's functional. To isolate the planar part of the graph, a new computational method has been developed based on linear algebra and the algebra of structural numbers. The proposed method has polynomial computational complexity.

Abstract:In this paper we formalize a combinatorial object for describing link diagrams called a Planar Diagram Code (PD-Code). PD-codes are used by the KnotTheory Mathematica package developed by Bar-Natan et al. We present the set of PD-codes as a standalone object and discuss its relationship with link diagrams. We give an explicit algorithm for reconstructing a knot diagram on a surface from a PD-code. We also discuss the intrinsic symmetries of PD-codes (i.e. invertibility and chirality). The moves analogous to the Reidemeister moves are also explored, and we show that the given set of PD-codes modulo these combinatorial Reidemeister moves is equivalent to classical link theory.

Topological Drawings meet Classical Theorems from Convex Geometry

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.

Abstract:Hierarchical graphs appear in several graph drawing applications, where nodes are assigned layers for semantic reasons. More importantly, general methods for drawing directed graphs usually begin by transforming the input digraph into a hierarchical graph, then applying a hierarchical graph drawing algorithm.This paper introduces the Degree Weighted Barycentre (DWB) algorithm for drawing hierarchical graphs. We show that drawings output by DWB satisfy several important aesthetic criteria: under certain connectivity conditions, they are planar, convex, and symmetric whenever such drawings are possible. The algorithm can be implemented as a simple Gauss - Seidel iteration.

Abstract:We continue the development of the infinitesimal deformation theory of pasting diagrams of k-linear categories begun in Yetter, D.N. "On Deformations of Pasting Diagrams", Theory and Applications of Categories 22 (2009) 24-53. In that paper, the standard result that all obstructions are cocycles was established only for the elementary, composition-free parts of pasting diagrams. In the present work we give a proof for pasting diagrams in general. As tools we use (1) the method developed by Shrestha, in his Kansas State University doctoral dissertation, of representing formulas for obstructions, along with the corresponding cocycle and cobounding conditions by suitably labeled polygons, giving a rigorous exposition of the previously heuristic method, and (2) deformations of pasting diagrams in which some cells are required to be deformed trivially.

Hard diagrams of split links

Abstract:Deformations of knots and links in ambient space can be studied combinatorially on their diagrams via local modifications called Reidemeister moves. While it is well-known that, in order to move between equivalent diagrams with Reidemeister moves, one sometimes needs to insert excess crossings, there are significant gaps between the best known lower and upper bounds on the required number of these added crossings. In this article, we study the problem of turning a diagram of a split link into a split diagram, and we show that there exist split links with diagrams requiring an arbitrarily large number of such additional crossings. More precisely, we provide a family of diagrams of split links, so that any sequence of Reidemeister moves transforming a diagram with $c$ crossings into a split diagram requires going through a diagram with $\Omega(\sqrt{c})$ extra crossings. Our proof relies on the framework of bubble tangles, as introduced by Lunel and de Mesmay, and a technique of Chambers and Liokumovitch to turn homotopies into isotopies in the context of Riemannian geometry.

Abstract:Modern methods of graph theory describe a graph up to isomorphism, which makes it difficult to create mathematical models for visualizing graph drawings on a plane. The topological drawing of the planar part of a graph allows representing the planarization process by algebraic methods, without making any geometric constructions on the plane. Constructing a rotation of graph vertices solves two most important problems of graph theory simultaneously: the problem of testing a graph for planarity and the problem of constructing a topological drawing of a planar graph. It is shown that the problem of constructing a drawing of a non-planar graph can be reduced to the problem of constructing a drawing of a planar graph, taking into account the introduction of additional vertices characterizing the intersection of edges. Naturally, the development of such a mathematical structure will make it possible to solve the following important problems of graph theory: testing the planarity of a graph, identifying the largest planar subgraph of a graph, determining the thickness of a graph, obtaining a graph with a minimum number of intersections, etc.

Holes in Convex and Simple Drawings

Abstract:Gons and holes in point sets have been extensively studied in the literature. For simple drawings of the complete graph a generalization of the Erdős--Szekeres theorem is known and empty triangles have been investigated. We introduce a notion of $k$-holes for simple drawings and study their existence with respect to the convexity hierarchy. We present a family of simple drawings without 4-holes and prove a generalization of Gerken's empty hexagon theorem for convex drawings. A crucial intermediate step will be the structural investigation of pseudolinear subdrawings in convex~drawings.

Abstract:We introduce L-drawings, a novel paradigm for representing directed graphs aiming at combining the readability features of orthogonal drawings with the expressive power of matrix representations. In an L-drawing, vertices have exclusive $x$- and $y$-coordinates and edges consist of two segments, one exiting the source vertically and one entering the destination horizontally. We study the problem of computing L-drawings using minimum ink. We prove its NP-completeness and provide a heuristics based on a polynomial-time algorithm that adds a vertex to a drawing using the minimum additional ink. We performed an experimental analysis of the heuristics which confirms its effectiveness.

Untangling Graphs on Surfaces

Abstract:Consider a graph drawn on a surface (for example, the plane minus a finite set of obstacle points), possibly with crossings. We provide an algorithm to decide whether such a drawing can be untangled, namely, if one can slide the vertices and edges of the graph on the surface (avoiding the obstacles) to remove all crossings; in other words, whether the drawing is homotopic to an embedding. While the problem boils down to planarity testing when the surface is the sphere or the disk (or equivalently the plane without any obstacle), the other cases have never been studied before, except when the input graph is a cycle, in an abundant literature in topology and more recently by Despré and Lazarus [SoCG 2017, J. ACM 2019]. Our algorithm runs in O(m + poly(g+b) n log n) time, where g >= 0 and b >= 0 are the genus and the number of boundary components of the input orientable surface S, and n is the size of the input graph drawing, lying on some fixed graph of size m cellularly embedded on S. We use various techniques from two-dimensional computational topology and from the theory of hyperbolic surfaces. Most notably, we introduce reducing triangulations, a novel discrete analog of hyperbolic surfaces in the spirit of systems of quads by Lazarus and Rivaud [FOCS 2012] and Erickson and Whittlesey [SODA 2013], which have the additional benefit that reduced paths are unique and stable upon reversal; they are likely of independent interest. Tailored data structures are needed to achieve certain homotopy tests efficiently on these triangulations. As a key subroutine, we rely on an algorithm to test the weak simplicity of a graph drawn on a surface by Akitaya, Fulek, and Tóth [SODA 2018, TALG 2019].

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface Σg of genus g, a marking m = ∪3g−3 i=1 mi is a disjoint union of 3g − 3 pairwise non-parallel, essential unoriented simple loops in Σg. In [HT], Hatcher and Thurston introduced two elementary moves on markings and showed that any two markings are related by a finite sequence of these moves. The type I (resp. type II) move on m produces a new marking m′ = ∪3g−3 j=1 mj where mj = mj , j = i and mi ∩ mi consists of one point (resp. two points of different intersection signs) as in Figure 1. Suppose m, n are two markings. We say that marking n contains a wave with respect to m, if there is an arc α in n so that α∩m = α∩mi = ∂α for some i and α approaches its end points from the same side of mi (see [VKF]). The goal of the paper is to show the following theorem.

Abstract:We consider the problem of untangling a given (non-planar) straight-line circular drawing δG of an outerplanar graph G=(V,E) into a planar straight-line circular drawing of G by shifting a minimum number of vertices to a new position on the circle. For an outerplanar graph G , it is obvious that such a crossing-free circular drawing always exists and we define the circular shifting number shift∘(δG) as the minimum number of vertices that are required to be shifted in order to resolve all crossings of δG . We show that the problem Circular Untangling , asking whether shift∘(δG)≤K for a given integer K , is NP -complete. For n -vertex outerplanar graphs, we obtain a tight upper bound of shift∘(δG)≤n−⌊n−2⌋−2 . Moreover, we study the Circular Untangling for almost-planar circular drawings, in which a single edge is involved in all of the crossings. For this problem, we provide a tight upper bound shift∘(δG)≤⌊n2⌋−1 and present an O(n2) -time algorithm to compute the circular shifting number of almost-planar drawings.
A layout algorithm for higher-dimensional string diagrams

Abstract:The algebraic zigzag construction has recently been introduced as a combinatorial foundation for a higher dimensional notion of string diagram. For use in a proof assistant, a layout algorithm is required to determine the optimal rendering coordinates, across multiple projection schemes including 2D, 3D, and 4D. For construction of these layouts, a key requirement is to determine the linear constraints which the geometrical elements must satisfy in each dimension. Here we introduce a new categorical tool called injectification, which lifts a functorial factorization system on a category to diagrams over that category, and we show that implementing this recursively in the category of finite posets allows us to systematically generate the necessary constraints. These ideas have been implemented as the layout engine of the proof assistant <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://homotopy.io" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, enabling attractive and practical visualisations of complex higher categorical objects.

A Suggestive Interface for Untangling Mathematical Knots

Abstract:In this paper we present a user-friendly sketching-based suggestive interface for untangling mathematical knots with complicated structures. Rather than treating mathematical knots as if they were 3D ropes, our interface is designed to assist the user to interact with knots with the right sequence of mathematically legal moves. Our knot interface allows one to sketch and untangle knots by proposing the Reidemeister moves, and can guide the user to untangle mathematical knots to the fewest possible number of crossings by suggesting the moves needed. The system highlights parts of the knot where the Reidemeister moves are applicable, suggests the possible moves, and constrains the user's drawing to legal moves only. This ongoing suggestion is based on a Reidemeister move analyzer, that reads the evolving knot in its Gauss code and predicts the needed Reidemeister moves towards the fewest possible number of crossings. For our principal test case of mathematical knot diagrams, this for the first time permits us to visualize, analyze, and deform them in a mathematical visual interface. In addition, understanding of a fairly long mathematical deformation sequence in our interface can be aided by visual analysis and comparison over the identified "key moments" where only critical changes occur in the sequence. Our knot interface allows users to track and trace mathematical knot deformation with a significantly reduced number of visual frames containing only the Reidemeister moves being applied. All these combine to allow a much cleaner exploratory interface for us to analyze and study mathematical knots and their dynamics in topological space.

Abstract:This is the second part of the article on doubly symmetric diagrams and strongly positive amphicheiral knots. We develop an enumeration strategy for prime knots given by doubly symmetric diagrams and determine all cases up to 18 crossings in the doubly symmetric diagram. A digression covers the origin of Gauss words for long curves and explains how Gauss marked non-realizable words.

Abstract:An algorithm for the automatic Feynman diagram (FD) generation is presented in this paper. The algorithm starts directly from the definition formula of FD, and is simple in concept and easy for coding. The symmetry factor for each FD is naturally generated. It is expected to bring convenience for the researchers who are studying new calculation techniques or making new calculation tools and for the researchers who are studying effective field theory. A C-program made from the algorithm is also presented, which is short, fast, yet very general purpose: it receives arbitrary user defined model and arbitrary process as input and generates FD's at any order.

Abstract:We give a presentation for a non-split compact surface embedded in the 3-sphere by using diagrams of spatial trivalent graphs equipped with signs and we define Reidemeister moves for such signed diagrams. We show that two diagrams of embedded surfaces are related by Reidemeister moves if and only if the surfaces represented by the diagrams are ambient isotopic in the 3-sphere.
