Abstract:In this article, we discuss and survey the recent progress towards the Schottky problem, and make some comments on the relations between the Andr{é}-Oort conjecture, Okounkov convex bodies, Coleman's conjecture, stable modular forms, Siegel-Jacobi spaces, stable Jacobi forms and the Schottky problem.

Abstract:We present a computational approach to the classical Schottky problem based on Fay's trisecant identity for genus $g\geq 4$. For a given Riemann matrix $\mathbb{B}\in\mathbb{H}^{g}$, the Fay identity establishes linear dependence of secants in the Kummer variety if and only if the Riemann matrix corresponds to a Jacobian variety as shown by Krichever. The theta functions in terms of which these secants are expressed depend on the Abel maps of four arbitrary points on a Riemann surface. However, there is no concept of an Abel map for general $\mathbb{B} \in \mathbb{H}^{g}$. To establish linear dependence of the secants, four components of the vectors entering the theta functions can be chosen freely. The remaining components are determined by a Newton iteration to minimize the residual of the Fay identity. Krichever's theorem assures that if this residual vanishes within the finite numerical precision for a generic choice of input data, then the Riemann matrix is with this numerical precision the period matrix of a Riemann surface. The algorithm is compared in genus 4 for some examples to the Schottky-Igusa modular form, known to give the Jacobi locus in this case. It is shown that the same residuals are achieved by the Schottky-Igusa form and the approach based on the Fay identity in this case. In genera 5, 6 and 7, we discuss known examples of Riemann matrices and perturbations thereof for which the Fay identity is not satisfied.

Reality and Computation in Schubert Calculus

Abstract:The Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem (previously the Shapiro Conjecture) asserts that a Schubert problem has all solutions distinct and real if the Schubert varieties involved osculate a rational normal curve at real points. This sparked interest in real osculating Schubert calculus, and computations played a large role in developing the surrounding theory. We uncover generalizations of the Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem, proving them when possible. We also improve the state of the art of computationally solving Schubert problems, allowing us to more effectively study ill-understood phenomena in Schubert calculus. We use supercomputers to methodically solve real osculating instances of Schubert problems. By studying over 300 million instances of over 700 Schubert problems, we amass data significant enough to reveal possible generalizations of the Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem and compelling enough to support our conjectures. Combining algebraic geometry and combinatorics, we prove some of these conjectures. To improve the efficiency of solving Schubert problems, we reformulate an instance of a Schubert problem as the solution set to a square system of equations in a higher-dimensional space. During our investigation, we found the number of real solutions to an instance of a symmetrically defined Schubert problem is congruent modulo four to the number of complex solutions. We prove this congruence, giving a new invariant in enumerative real algebraic geometry. We also discovered a family of Schubert problems whose number of real solutions to a real osculating instance has a lower bound depending only on the number of defining flags with real osculation points.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to initiate the study of estimates of the non-classical structure in the generalized Schottky group theory. In fact, in this paper, we have investigated the non-classical Schottky structure on a type of generalized Schottky group (for instance Fuchsian Schottky groups) in the hyperbolic plane with boundary. A Schottky group is said to be non-classical if the curves used in the Schottky construction are Jordan curves. More precisely, in this manuscript, we have provided a structure of the rank $2$ non-classical Fuchsian Schottky groups by utilizing two suitable hyperbolic Möbius transformations on the upper-half plane model. In particular, we have derived two non-trivial examples of non-classical Fuchsian Schottky groups in the upper-half plane with the circle at infinity as the boundary.

Abstract:An Ansatz for the Poincaré metric on compact Riemann surfaces is proposed. This implies that the Liouville equation reduces to an equation resembling a non chiral analogous of the higher genus relationships (KP equation) arising in the framework of Schottky's problem solution. This approach connects uniformization (Fuchsian groups) and moduli space theories with KP hierarchy. Besides its mathematical interest, the Ansatz has some applications in the framework of quantum Riemann surfaces arising in 2D gravity.

Abstract:In a recent paper, H. Shiga proved that the regions of discontinuity of any two Schottky groups of ranks at least two are quasiconformally equivalent. In this paper, we provide an alternative proof of such a fact. Our approach permits us to discuss quasiconformality equivalence of regions of discontinuity of Schottky type groups in terms of their signatures.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.

Abstract:There were two famous conjectures on complete affine maximal surfaces, one due to E. Calabi, the other to S.S. Chern. Both were solved with different methods about one decade ago by studying the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. Here we survey two proofs of Chern's conjecture in our recent monograph [L-X-S-J], in particular we add some details of the proofs of auxiliary material that were omitted in [L-X-S-J]. We describe the related background in our Introduction. Our survey is suitable as a report about recent developments and techniques in the study of certain Monge-Ampere equations.

Abstract:Schottky contacts have attracted widespread attention from both the electronic device industry and researchers since their discovery. The Schottky characteristics make these contacts highly suitable for use in field-effect transistors (FETs), photodetectors (PDs), solar cells (SCs), resistive-switching memories (RSMs), thin-film transistors (TFTs), etc. However, how do Schottky contacts affect the device performance? The answer lies simply in the Schottky parameters. This review focuses on the extraction of Schottky parameters, i.e., the Schottky barrier height (SBH), ideality factor (IF), and series resistance (SR), from the current-voltage (I−V) curve to understand and analyze the characteristics of Schottky devices. First, the current research progress in this field and the principles of Schottky contacts are presented. Second, this article delves into some classic and widely used extraction methods as well as the latest extraction methods, providing an objective evaluation based on their practical effectiveness. Then, several research applications, including studies that require extraction, simple extraction, and delicate extraction, are enumerated to demonstrate the necessity and importance of Schottky parameter analysis. Finally, an outlook and future research prospects are discussed based on recent progress, and a comprehensive summary is given.

Abstract:Any four-dimensional Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory with eight supercharges can be associated to a certain complex symplectic manifold called the "K-theoretic Coulomb branch" of the theory. The collection of K-theoretic Coulomb branches include many complex phase spaces of great interest, including in particular the "character varieties" of complex flat connections on a Riemann surface. The SQFT definition endows K-theoretic Coulomb branches with a variety of canonical structures, including a deformation quantization. In this paper we introduce a canonical "Schur" quantization of K-theoretic Coulomb branches. It is defined by a variant of the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction, applied to protected Schur correlation functions of half-BPS line defects. Schur quantization produces an actual quantization of the complex phase space. As a concrete application, we apply this construction to character varieties in order to quantize Chern-Simons gauge theory with a complex gauge group. Other applications include the definition of a new quantum deformation of the Lorentz group, and the solution of certain spectral problems via dualities.

Abstract:Schubert coefficients are nonnegative integers $c^w_{u,v}$ that arise in Algebraic Geometry and play a central role in Algebraic Combinatorics. It is a major open problem whether they have a combinatorial interpretation, i.e, whether $c^w_{u,v} \in \#{\sf P}$. We study the closely related vanishing problem of Schubert coefficients: $\{c^w_{u,v}=^?0\}$. Until this work it was open whether this problem is in the polynomial hierarchy ${\sf PH}$. We prove that $\{c^w_{u,v}=^?0\}$ in ${\sf coAM}$ assuming the GRH. In particular, the vanishing problem is in ${\Sigma_2^{\text{p}}}$. Our approach is based on constructions lifted formulations, which give polynomial systems of equations for the problem. The result follows from a reduction to Parametric Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, recently studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.13027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.13027">arXiv:2408.13027</a>. We apply our construction to show that the vanishing problem is in ${\sf NP}_{\mathbb{C}} \cap {\sf P}_{\mathbb{R}}$ in the Blum--Shub--Smale (BSS) model of computation over complex and real numbers respectively. Similarly, we prove that computing Schubert coefficients is in $\#{\sf P}_{\mathbb{C}}$, a counting version of the BSS model. We also extend our results to classical types. With one notable exception of the vanishing problem in type $D$, all our results extend to all types.

Abstract:The formation of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) is a complex problem because of the dependence of the SBH on the atomic structure of the metal-semiconductor (MS) interface. Existing models of the SBH are too simple to realistically treat the chemistry exhibited at MS interfaces. This article points out, through examination of available experimental and theoretical results, that a comprehensive, quantum-mechanics-based picture of SBH formation can already be constructed, although no simple equations can emerge, which are applicable for all MS interfaces. Important concepts and principles in physics and chemistry that govern the formation of the SBH are described in detail, from which the experimental and theoretical results for individual MS interfaces can be understood. Strategies used and results obtained from recent investigations to systematically modify the SBH are also examined from the perspective of the physical and chemical principles of the MS interface.
