Abstract:The shift between frozen and thawed conditions on the Earth's surface influences climate, hydrology, and ecology. A primary objective of the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission is to estimate the surface binary freeze/thaw (F/T) state for the northern hemisphere above 45° N latitude with a classification accuracy of 80% at 3-km spatial resolution and 2-day intervals. The objective was to be accomplished by the SMAP L-band radar measurements. In July 2015, the radar transmitter suffered an anomaly that prevented it from nominal operation. The mission partially met the goal exceeding the targeted 80% accuracy but at 36 km resolution. After the radar anomaly, the SMAP mission switched the radar receiver bandpass filter frequency to Global Positioning System (GPS) L2c, acting as a full-polarimetric Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) receiver, known as SMAP-Reflectometer (SMAP-R). This work focuses on using SMAP-R signals to classify the F/T state over the Northern latitudes, within the limitations of the dataset. An algorithm based on the seasonal threshold approach that was originally envisioned for the SMAP radar is applied to the SMAP-R data (i.e., bistatic radar). Then the algorithm is evolved using a Random Forest algorithm to aid threshold selection from the discriminator built in the seasonal threshold approach. This algorithm is applied for years 2016 to 2022 over the Northern Hemisphere terrestrial cryosphere and shows an F/T classification accuracy agreement better than 97% with respect to the classification of the official SMAP F/T Radiometry product, proving the potential of polarimetric GNSS-R to derive F/T.

Abstract:This paper aims to retrieve the temporal dynamics of soil moisture from 2015 to 2019 over an agricultural site in Southeast Australia using the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) brightness temperature. To meet this objective, two machine learning approaches, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), as well as a statistical Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model were established, with the auxiliary data including the 16-day composite MODIS NDVI (MOD13Q1) and Surface Temperature (ST). The entire data were divided into two parts corresponding to ascending (6:00 p.m. local time) and descending (6:00 a.m. local time) orbits of SMAP overpasses. Thus, the three models were trained using the descending data acquired during the five years (2015 to 2019), and validated using the ascending product of the same period. Consequently, three different temporal variations of the soil moisture were obtained based on the three models. To evaluate their accuracies, the retrieved soil moisture was compared against the SMAP level-2 soil moisture product, as well as to in-situ ground station data. The comparative results show that the soil moisture obtained using the OLS, RF and SVM algorithms are highly correlated to the SMAP level-2 product, with high coefficients of determination (R-OLS(2) = 0.981, R-SVM(2) = 0.943, R-RF(2) = 0.983) and low RMSE (RMSEOLS = 0.016 cm(3)/cm(3), RMSESVM = 0.047 cm(3)/cm(3), RMSERF = 0.016 cm(3)/cm(3)). Meanwhile, the estimated soil moistures agree with in-situ station data across different years (R-OLS(2) = 0.376 similar to 0.85, R-SVM(2) = 0.376 similar to 0.814, R-RF(2) = 0.39 similar to 0.854; RMSEOLS = 0.049 similar to 0.105 cm(3)/cm(3), RMSESVM = 0.073 similar to 0.1 cm(3)/cm(3), RMSERF = 0.047 similar to 0.102 cm(3)/cm(3)), but an overestimation issue is observed for high vegetation conditions. The RF algorithm outperformed the SVM and OLS, in terms of the agreement with the ground measurements. This study suggests an alternative soil moisture retrieval scheme, in complementary to the SMAP baseline algorithm, for a fast soil moisture retrieval.

Abstract:The landscape freeze/thaw (FT) state plays an important role in local, regional and global weather and climate, but is difficult to monitor. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission provides hemispheric estimates of landscape FT state at a spatial resolution of approximately 362km2. Previous validation studies of SMAP and other satellite FT products have compared satellite retrievals with point estimates obtained from in-situ measurements of air and/or soil temperature. Differences between the two are attributed to errors in the satellite retrieval. However, significant differences can occur between satellite and in-situ estimates solely due to differences in scale between the measurements; these differences can be viewed as ‘representativeness errors’ in the in-situ product, caused by using a point estimate to represent a large-scale spatial average. Most previous validation studies of landscape FT state have neglected representativeness errors entirely, resulting in conservative estimates of satellite retrieval skill. In this study, we use a variant of triple collocation called ‘categorical triple collocation’ – a technique that uses model, satellite and in-situ estimates to obtain relative performance rankings of all three products, without neglecting representativeness errors – to validate the SMAP landscape FT product. Performance rankings are obtained for nine sites at northern latitudes. We also investigate differences between using air or soil temperatures to estimate FT state, and between using morning (6AM) or evening (6PM) estimates. Overall, at most sites, the SMAP product or in-situ FT measurement is ranked first, and the model FT product is ranked last (although rankings vary across sites). These results suggest SMAP is adding value to model simulations, providing higher-accuracy estimates of landscape FT states compared to models and, in some cases, even in-situ estimates, when representativeness errors are properly accounted for in the validation analysis.

Abstract:A soil moisture retrieval algorithm using L-band radar-only observations is applied to soil moisture active and passive (SMAP) radar observations. This algorithm is based on a nonlinear relationship between L-band backscatter and soil moisture, and any ancillary vegetation or roughness information is not needed. This algorithm is based on three limiting cases and end-members: smooth bare soil, rough bare soil and maximum vegetation covered soil. Those parameters is estimated through a iterative process. Three months global soil moisture is retrieved using SMAP radar observations and this algorithm. The accuracy of soil moisture result is validated by the ground network insitu observations and the SMAP standard radar and radiometer product. The soil moisture has similar spatial pattern with that of SMAP standard product at 9 km resolution. In the future, we can estimate the soil moisture at 3 km with SMAP radar data only.

Abstract:A change detection algorithm has been developed in order to obtain high-resolution soil moisture estimates from future Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) L-band radar and radiometer observations. The approach combines the relatively noisy 3-km radar backscatter coefficients and the more accurate 36-km radiometer brightness temperature into an optimal 10-km product. In preparation for the SMAP mission, an observation system simulation experiment (OSSE) and field experimental campaigns using the Passive and Active L- and S-band Airborne Sensor (PALS) have been conducted. We use the PALS airborne observations and OSSE data to test the algorithm and develop an error budget table. When applied to four-month OSSE data, the change detection method is shown to perform better than direct inversion of the radiometer brightness temperatures alone, improving the root mean square error by 2% volumetric soil moisture content. The main assumptions of the algorithm are verified using PALS data from the soil moisture experiments held during June–July 2002 (Soil Moisture Experiment 2002) in Iowa. The algorithm error budget is estimated and shown to meet SMAP science requirements.

Abstract:Soil moisture content (SMC) is a significant factor affecting crop growth and development. However, SMC estimation, based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR), is influenced by a variety of surface parameters, such as vegetation cover and surface roughness. As a result, determining the SMC across agricultural areas (e.g., wheat fields) remotely (i.e., without ground measurement) is difficult to achieve. In this study, a model-based polarization decomposition method was used to decompose the original SAR signal into different scattering components that represented different scattering mechanisms. The different volume scattering models were applied, and then the results were compared in order to remove the scattering contribution from vegetation canopy, and extract the surface scattering components related to the soil moisture. Finally, by combining extensively used surface scattering models (e.g., CIEM and Dubois), and a method of roughness parameters optimization, a lookup table was developed to estimate the soil moisture during the wheat growth period. When CIEM is applied, the R2 and RMSE of the SMC are 0.534, 5.62 vol.%, and for the Dubois model, 0.634, 5.16 vol.%, respectively, which indicates that this approach provides good estimation performance for measuring soil moisture during the wheat growing season.

Abstract:Over land the vegetation canopy affects the microwave brightness temperature by emission, scattering and attenuation of surface soil emission. The questions addressed in this study are: 1) what is the transparency of the vegetation canopy for different biomes around the Globe at the low-frequency L-band?, 2) what is the seasonal amplitude of vegetation microwave optical depth for different biomes?, 3) what is the effective scattering at this frequency for different vegetation types?, 4) what is the impact of imprecise characterization of vegetation microwave properties on retrieval of soil surface conditions? These questions are addressed based on the recently completed one full annual cycle measurements by the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) measurements.

Deep learning estimation of northern hemisphere soil freeze-thaw dynamics using satellite multi-frequency microwave brightness temperature observations

Abstract:Satellite microwave sensors are well suited for monitoring landscape freeze-thaw (FT) transitions owing to the strong brightness temperature (TB) or backscatter response to changes in liquid water abundance between predominantly frozen and thawed conditions. The FT retrieval is also a sensitive climate indicator with strong biophysical importance. However, retrieval algorithms can have difficulty distinguishing the FT status of soils from that of overlying features such as snow and vegetation, while variable land conditions can also degrade performance. Here, we applied a deep learning model using a multilayer convolutional neural network driven by AMSR2 and SMAP TB records, and trained on surface (~0-5 cm depth) soil temperature FT observations. Soil FT states were classified for the local morning (6 a.m.) and evening (6 p.m.) conditions corresponding to SMAP descending and ascending orbital overpasses, mapped to a 9 km polar grid spanning a five-year (2016-2020) record and Northern Hemisphere domain. Continuous variable estimates of the probability of frozen or thawed conditions were derived using a model cost function optimized against FT observational training data. Model results derived using combined multi-frequency (1.4, 18.7, 36.5 GHz) TBs produced the highest soil FT accuracy over other models derived using only single sensor or single frequency TB inputs. Moreover, SMAP L-band (1.4 GHz) TBs provided enhanced soil FT information and performance gain over model results derived using only AMSR2 TB inputs. The resulting soil FT classification showed favorable and consistent performance against soil FT observations from ERA5 reanalysis (mean percent accuracy, MPA: 92.7%) and in situ weather stations (MPA: 91.0%). The soil FT accuracy was generally consistent between morning and afternoon predictions and across different land covers and seasons. The model also showed better FT accuracy than ERA5 against regional weather station measurements (91.0% vs. 86.1% MPA). However, model confidence was lower in complex terrain where FT spatial heterogeneity was likely beneath the effective model grain size. Our results provide a high level of precision in mapping soil FT dynamics to improve understanding of complex seasonal transitions and their influence on ecological processes and climate feedbacks, with the potential to inform Earth system model predictions.

Abstract:Soil moisture is one of the main factors affecting microwave radar backscatter from the ground. While there are other factors that affect backscatter levels (for instance, surface roughness, vegetation, and incident angle), relative variations in soil moisture can be estimated using space-based, medium resolution, multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Understanding the distribution and identification of water-saturated areas using SAR soil moisture can be important for wetland mapping. The SAR soil moisture retrieval algorithm provides a relative assessment and requires calibration over wet and dry periods. In this work, relative soil moisture indicators are derived from a time series of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) SAR compact polarimetric (CP) data over reclaimed areas of an oil sands mine in Alberta, Canada. An evaluation of the soil moisture product is performed using in situ measurements showing agreement from June to September. The surface scattering component of m-chi CP decomposition and the RL SAR products demonstrated a good agreement with the field data (low RMSE values and a perfect alignment with field-identified wetlands).

A Novel Freeze-Thaw State Detection Algorithm Based on L-Band Passive Microwave Remote Sensing

Abstract:Knowing the freeze-thaw (FT) state of the land surface is essential for many aspects of weather forecasting, climate, hydrology, and agriculture. Microwave L-band emission contains rather direct information about the FT-state because of its impact on the soil dielectric constant, which determines microwave emissivity and the optical depth profile. However, current L-band-based FT algorithms need reference values to distinguish between frozen and thawed soil, which are often not well known. We present a new FT-state-detection algorithm based on the daily variation of the H-polarized brightness temperature of the SMAP L3c FT global product for the northern hemisphere, which is available from 2015 to 2021. Exploiting the daily variation signal allows for a more reliable state detection, particularly during the transition periods, when the near-surface soil layer may freeze and thaw on sub-daily time scales. The new algorithm requires no reference values; its results agree with the SMAP FT state product by up to 98% in summer and up to 75% in winter. Compared to the FT state inferred indirectly from the 2-m air temperature and collocated soil temperature at 0–7 cm of the ERA5-land reanalysis, the new FT algorithm has a similar performance to the SMAP FT product. The most significant differences occur over the midlatitudes, including the Tibetan plateau and its downstream area. Here, daytime surface heating may lead to daily FT transitions, which are not considered by the SMAP FT state product but are correctly identified by the new algorithm. The new FT algorithm suggests a 15 days earlier start of the frozen-soil period than the ERA5-land’s estimate. This study is expected to extend the L-band microwave remote sensing data for improved FT detection.

Abstract:Soil moisture (SM) plays a significant part in regional hydrological and meteorological systems throughout Earth. It is considered an indispensable state variable in earth science. The high sensitivity of microwave remote sensing to soil moisture, and its ability to function under all weather conditions at all hours of the day, has led to its wide application in SM retrieval. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of ALOS-2 data to estimate SM in areas with high vegetation coverage. Through the water cloud model (WCM), the article simulates the scene coupling between active microwave images and optical data. Subsequently, we use a genetic algorithm to optimize back propagation (GA-BP) neural network technology to retrieve SM. The vegetation descriptors of the WCM, derived from optical images, were the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized difference water index (NDWI), and the normalized multi-band drought index (NMDI). In the vegetation-covered area, 240 field soil samples were collected simultaneously with the ALOS-2 SAR overpass. Soil samples at two depths (0–10 cm, 20–30 cm) were collected at each sampling site. The backscattering of the ALOS-2 with the copolarization was found to be more sensitive to SM than the crosspolarization. In addition, the sensitivity of the soil backscattering coefficient to SM at a depth of 0–10 cm was higher than at a depth of 20–30 cm. At a 0–10 cm depth, the best results were the mean square error (MAE) of 2.248 vol%, the root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.146 vol%, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.056 vol%, when the vegetation is described as by the NDVI. At a 20–30 cm depth, the best results were an MAE of 2.333 vol%, an RMSE of 2.882 vol%, a MAPE of 0.067 vol%, with the NMDI as the vegetation description. The use of the GA-BP NNs method for SM inversion presented in this paper is novel. Moreover, the results revealed that ALOS-2 data is a valuable source for SM estimation, and ALOS-2 L-band data was sensitive to SM even under vegetation cover.

Abstract:Soil moisture content (SMC) is an indispensable basic element for crop growth and development in agricultural production. Obtaining accurate information on SMC in real time over large agricultural areas has important guiding significance for crop yield estimation and production management. In this study, the paper reports on the retrieval of SMC from RADARSAT-2 polarimetric SAR data. The proposed SMC retrieval algorithm includes vegetation correction based on a ratio method and roughness correction based on the optimal roughness method. Three vegetation description parameters (i.e., RVI, LAI, and NDVI) serve as vegetation descriptors in the parameterization of the algorithm. To testify the vegetation correction result of the algorithm, the water cloud model (WCM) was compared with the algorithm. The calibrated integrated equation model (CIEM) was employed to describe the backscattering from the underlying soil. To improve the accuracy of SMC retrieval, the CIEM model was optimized by using the optimal roughness parameter and the normalization method of reference incidence angle. Validation against ground measurements showed a high correlation between the measured and estimated SMC when the NDVI serves as vegetation descriptor (R2 = 0.68, RMSE = 4.15 vol.%, p < 0.01). The overall estimation performance of the proposed SMC retrieval algorithm is better than that of the WCM. It demonstrates that the proposed algorithm has an operational potential to estimate SMC over wheat fields during the growing season.

Abstract:The Soil Moisture Active–Passive (SMAP) mission has greatly contributed to the use of remote sensing technologies for monitoring the Earth's land surface and estimating geophysical parameters that influence the climate system. Since the SMAP mission switched its radar receiver to allow the reception of Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) configuration has been enabled, providing full polarimetric forward scattering measurements of the Earth's surface, also known as SMAP Reflectometry or SMAP-R. Polarimetric GNSS-R is beneficial for sensing land surface properties, especially for more accurate estimations of soil moisture (SM) in densely vegetated areas. In this study, we explore the opportunity to enhance SMAP mission soil moisture estimates using reflected GNSS signals. We achieve this by interpolating the sparse reflectivity data with terrain information to disaggregate radiometer brightness temperatures. Our main objective is to present a novel algorithm based on Graph Signal Processing (GSP) that uses reflectometry data to enhance SMAP radiometer observations and ultimately improve SM retrievals. By implementing methods from the GSP field, we formulate the reflectivity interpolation problem as a signal reconstruction on a graph, where the weights of the edges between the nodes are chosen as a function of geophysical information. Subsequently, using the retrieved reflectivity maps, we increase the resolution of the brightness temperature data, leading to an improvement in the SM estimates. Initial findings indicate that our GSP method presents a promising alternative for analyzing sparse remote sensing observations, leveraging Earth's surface geophysical information. This approach results in a notable improvement, with a reduced Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 11.8% compared to SMAP data and a reduction in unbiased RMSE (uRMSE) by 14.7% over vegetated areas.

Abstract:Soil moisture impacts exchanges of water, energy and carbon fluxes between the land surface and the atmosphere. Passive microwave remote sensing at L-band can capture spatial and temporal patterns of soil moisture in the landscape. Both ESA and NASA have launched L-band radiometers, in the form of the SMOS and SMAP satellites respectively, to monitor soil moisture globally, every 3-day at about 40 km resolution. However, their coarse scale restricts the range of applications. While SMAP included an L-band radar to downscale the radiometer soil moisture to 9 km, the radar failed after 3 months and this initial approach is not applicable to developing a consistent long term soil moisture product across the two missions anymore. Existing optical-, radiometer-, and oversampling-based downscaling methods could be an alternative to the radar-based approach for delivering such data. Nevertheless, retrieval of a consistent high resolution soil moisture product remains a challenge, and there has been no comprehensive inter-comparison of the alternate approaches. Assessment of SMAP and AMSR2 Freeze/thaw Products over Russia Using in Situ Measurements

Abstract:Recently, many freeze/thaw (FT) products have been developed using spaceborne microwave measurements. In this letter, we compared the newest FT products, SMAP36 (36 km resolution) and SMAP09 (9 km resolution) provided by the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission and one product, AMSR2 FT, generated by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) against surface soil temperature measurements across Russia using a total of 494 stations. The results indicate that AMSR2 FT has a better performance in Russia than the SMAP products, which is more pronounced in the AM (descending orbit) value of overall accuracy (OA) than in the PM (ascending orbit). It is challenging to distinguish FT states in the transition periods between warm and cold seasons, but AMSR2 FT performs better than SMAP products. AMSR2 FT has a high OA in inland areas but a low OA along coastal zones because pixels may contain a water body or lake ice. The poorest SMAP results are mainly distributed in mixed forest areas, indicating that the algorithm should be improved to solve the wet snow problem in these areas. The results of this study could help improve FT products in Russia and provide application instructions for FT product users.
Soil Moisture Retrieval over Agricultural Fields from L-band Multi-Incidence and Multitemporal PolSAR Observations Using Polarimetric Decomposition Techniques

Abstract:Surface soil moisture (SM) retrieval over agricultural areas from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) has long been restricted by vegetation attenuation, simplified polarimetric scattering modelling, and limited SAR measurements. This study proposes a modified polarimetric decomposition framework to retrieve SM from multi-incidence and multitemporal PolSAR observations. The framework is constructed by combining the X-Bragg model, the extended double Fresnel scattering model and the generalised volume scattering model (GVSM). Compared with traditional decomposition models, the proposed framework considers the depolarisation of dihedral scattering and the diverse vegetation contribution. Under the assumption that SM is invariant for the PolSAR observations at two different incidence angles and that vegetation scattering does not change between two consecutive measurements, analytical parameter solutions, including the dielectric constant of soil and crop stem, can be obtained by solving multivariable nonlinear equations. The proposed framework is applied to the time series of L-band uninhabited aerial vehicle synthetic aperture radar data acquired during the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment in 2012. In this study, we assess retrieval performance by comparing the inversion results with in-situ measurements over bean, canola, corn, soybean, wheat and winter wheat areas and comparing the different performance of SM retrieval between the GVSM and Yamaguchi volume scattering models. Given that SM estimation is inherently influenced by crop phenology and empirical parameters which are introduced in the scattering models, we also investigate the influence of surface depolarisation angle and co-pol phase difference on SM estimation. Results show that the proposed retrieval framework provides an inversion accuracy of RMSE<6.0% and a correlation of R≥0.6 with an inversion rate larger than 90%. Over wheat and winter wheat fields, a correlation of 0.8 between SM estimates and measurements is observed when the surface scattering is dominant. Specifically, stem permittivity, which is retrieved synchronously with SM also shows a linear relationship with crop biomass and plant water content over bean, corn, soybean and wheat fields. We also find that a priori knowledge of surface depolarisation angle, co-pol phase difference and adaptive volume scattering could help to improve the performance of the proposed SM retrieval framework. However, the GVSM model is still not fully adaptive because the co-pol power ratio of volume scattering is potentially influenced by ground scattering.
Deducing Land-Atmosphere Coupling Regimes from SMAP Soil Moisture

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the significance of Land-Atmosphere (L-A) interactions and feedback mechanisms and their importance for weather and climate prediction. Soil moisture plays a critical role in mediating L-A interactions; therefore, this research assesses the impact of different soil moisture datasets on the classification and distribution of L-A coupling regimes. Using SMAP Level 3 (SMAPL3) and SMAP Level 4 (SMAPL4) soil moisture data, we examine the persistence of dry and wet coupling regimes over two decades (2003–2022), exploring how soil moisture influences coupling classification. An inherent challenge in assessing the significance of soil moisture in L-A coupling classification lies in the need for consistent and unbiased observations of the atmospheric state, represented through metrics such as Convective Triggering Potential (CTP), offering insights into atmospheric stability and Humidity Index (HI), which quantifies moisture within the atmosphere. The study utilizes a Triple Collocation-based merging process to address this issue and combines three reanalysis datasets for CTP and HI. Despite significant correlated errors within the individual reanalysis datasets, the merged product demonstrates enhanced performance, showcasing increased accuracy in capturing atmospheric conditions. When combined with the merged CTP and HI for coupling classification, a higher lag-correlation between soil moisture and the CTP-HI metrics contribute to the persist coupling behaviour, potentially suggesting that temporal consistency is a leading factor. SMAPL4 demonstrates stronger persistence of the wet and dry coupling regimes as compared to SMAPL3. The stronger persistence is partially due to the higher observation count, though it may partially be linked to the unique characteristics of the SMAPL4's assimilation process. This suggests that SMAPL4's approach may offer a robust approximation when assessing land-atmosphere interactions, highlighting the inherent differences between SMAPL3 and SMAPL4 datasets. These findings lay the groundwork for understanding the sensitivity of drought evolution to soil moisture variations by gaining insight into the quantification of coupling strength, thereby providing critical insights for future drought modelling and prediction efforts.

Abstract:Landscape freeze–thaw (F/T) state parameters are an integral part of research on terrestrial hydrological processes, vegetation growth dynamics, and terrestrial–atmospheric trace gas exchange. Therefore, the development of large-scale, continuous, and rapid F/T observation records is essential. This study proposes a scheme to effectively retrieve quasi-global daily soil F/T states from spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) observations. This method takes into account the GNSS-R surface reflectivity and its influence factor. Specifically, the method employed surface reflectivity derived from Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) data from 2018 to 2020, along with vegetation opacity data from Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) as input layers in random forests for F/T retrieval. This approach provides F/T results on a quasi-global scale, does not rely on continuous F/T observations, and employs the least ancillary data. To validate the retrieval results, SMAP F/T data over the same period and temperature data from more than 100 ground stations were also used as reference. Results showed that the F/T retrieval accuracy of CYGNSS was 95.5% and 82.0% with respect to the SMAP data and data from independent in situ stations, respectively. Given the high temporal coverage of the CYGNSS F/T results, the temporal coverage improvement is 23.3% compared with the actual SMAP observations on a daily scale. Furthermore, as gap-filling data complemented SMAP, CYGNSS data can effectively improve the SMAP F/T sample interval (accuracy improvement of 26.0%). More importantly, the F/T accuracy of the CYGNSS and SMAP combination based on monthly performance is 85.1%, i.e., 20.5% better than that of the existing SMAP daily F/T product. Overall, the quasi-global daily F/T results obtained from CYGNSS and SMAP measurements can complement existing databases with well-defined accuracy.

Abstract:The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission has been validating its soil moisture (SM) products since the start of data production on March 31, 2015. Prior to launch, the mission defined a set of criteria for core validation sites (CVS) that enable the testing of the key mission SM accuracy requirement (unbiased root-mean-square error <0.04 m3m3). The validation approach also includes other (sparse network) in situ SM measurements, satellite SM products, model-based SM products, and field experiments. Over the past six years, the SMAP SM products have been analyzed with respect to these reference data, and the analysis approaches themselves have been scrutinized in an effort to best understand the products performance. Validation of the most recent SMAP Level 2 and 3 SM retrieval products (R17000) shows that the L-band (1.4 GHz) radiometer-based SM record continues to meet mission requirements. The products are generally consistent with SM retrievals from the European Space Agency Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity mission, although there are differences in some regions. The high-resolution (3-km) SM retrieval product, generated by combining Copernicus Sentinel-1 data with SMAP observations, performs within expectations. Currently, however, there is limited availability of 3-km CVS data to support extensive validation at this spatial scale. The most recent (version 5) SMAP Level 4 SM data assimilation product providing surface and root-zone SM with complete spatiotemporal coverage at 9-km resolution also meets performance requirements. The SMAP SM validation program will continue throughout the mission life; future plans include expanding it to forested and high-latitude regions.
