Abstract:The Markov commutator associated to a finite Markov kernel P is the convex semigroup consisting of all Markov kernels commuting with P. Its interest comes from its relation with the hypergroup property and with the notion of Markovian duality by intertwining. In particular, it is shown that the discrete analogue of the Achour-Trimèche's theorem, asserting the preservation of non-negativity by the wave equations associated to certain Metropolis birth and death transition kernels, cannot be extended to all convex potentials. But it remains true for symmetric and monotone potentials which are sufficiently convex.

Abstract:We offer a new perspective and some advances on the 1971 Pearcy-Topping problem: is every compact operator a commutator of compact operators? Our goal is to analyze and generalize the 1970's work in this area of Joel Anderson. We reduce the general problem to a simpler sequence of finite matrix equations with norm constraints, while at the same time developing strategies for counterexamples. Our approach is to ask which compact operators are commutators AB − BA of compact operators A,B; and to analyze the implications of Joel Anderson's contributions to this problem. By extending the techniques of Anderson, we obtain new classes of operators that are commutators of compact operators beyond those obtained by the second and the fourth author. We also found obstructions to extending Anderson's techniques to obtain any positive compact operator as a commutator of compact operators. Some of these constraints involve general block-tridiagonal matrix forms for operators and some involve B(H)-ideal constraints. Finally, we provide some necessary conditions for the Pearcy-Topping problem involving singular numbers and B(H)-ideal constraints.

Abstract:Let K〈X〉 be a finite generated free associative algebra over a field K of characteristic zero and let f,g∈K〈X〉 generate their centralizer respectively. Assume that the f and g are algebraically independent, the leading homogeneous components of f and g are algebraically dependent and deg(f)∤deg(g), deg(g)∤deg(f). In this article, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture of Jie-Tai Yu that deg([f,g])>min{deg(f),deg(g)}, which is closely related to the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉. We also obtain a counterexample to another related conjecture of Makar-Limanov and Jie-Tai Yu stated in terms of Malcev–Neumann formal power series. In view of the counterexamples we formulate two open problems concerning degree estimate for commutators in view of the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉.The counterexamples in this article are constructed by applying the description of the free algebra K〈X〉 considered as a bimodule of K[u] where u is a monomial which is not a power of another monomial and the solution the equation [um,s]=[un,r] with unknowns r,s∈K〈X〉. The newly discovered description and the solution of the equation in this article are closely related to the combinatorial and computational aspects of free associative algebras, hence have their own independent interests.

Abstract:In this work, the commutator of any two reasonable functions of several pairs of canonical conjugate operators is obtained as a sum of terms of partial derivatives of those functions (equations 9, 10 or 11). When applied to quantum mechanics, first term in the sum is formally equivalent to Poisson bracket in classical mechanics, which is a well-known result. The novelty respect other papers is the type of functions of operators considered: equations mentioned are proved valid when each function is an infinite series of positive and negative powers of these operators, as long as every series converges. Therefore, this formalism can be applied to functions such as the Coulomb potential, where the inverse of radial distance cannot be expressed as a Taylor series.

We study the structure of rings which satisfy the von Neumann regularity of commutators, and call a ring [math] C-regular if [math] for all [math], [math] in [math]. For a C-regular ring [math], we prove [math], where [math], [math], [math], [math] are the Jacobson radical, upper nilradical, Wedderburn radical, and center of a given ring [math], respectively, and [math] denotes the polynomial ring with a set [math] of commuting indeterminates over [math]; we also prove that [math] is semiprime if and only if the right (left) singular ideal of [math] is zero. We provide methods to construct C-regular rings which are neither commutative nor von Neumann regular, from any given ring. Moreover, for a C-regular ring [math], the following are proved to be equivalent: (i) [math] is Abelian; (ii) every prime factor ring of [math] is a duo domain; (iii) [math] is quasi-duo; and (iv) [math] is reduced.

Abstract:Let ${\mathscr G}$ be a linear algebraic group over $k$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field, a pseudo-finite field or the valuation ring of a nonarchimedean local field. Let $G= {\mathscr G}(k)$. We prove that if $\gamma, \delta\in G$ such that $\gamma$ is a commutator and $\langle \delta\rangle= \langle \gamma\rangle$ then $\delta$ is a commutator. This generalises a result of Honda for finite groups. Our proof uses the Lefschetz Principle from first-order model theory.

Abstract:We investigate the algebraic structure on the set of closure operations of a ring. We show the set of closure operations is not a monoid under composition for a discrete valuation ring. Even the set of semiprime operations over a DVR is not a monoid; however, it is the union of two monoids, one being the left but not right act of the other. We also determine all semiprime operations over the ring $K[[t^2, t^3]]$.

Abstract:In [Hamaker-Pechenik-Speyer-Weigandt, Nenashev, Pechenik-Weigandt] are studied certain operators on polynomials and power series that commute with all divided difference operators $\partial_i$. We introduce a second set of "martial" operators {\martial_i} that generate the full commutant, and show how a Hopf-algebraic approach naturally reproduces the operators $\xi^\nu$ from [Nenashev]. We then pause to study Klyachko's homomorphism $H^*(Fl(n)) \to H^*($the permutahedral toric variety$)$, and extract the part of it relevant to Schubert calculus, the "affine-linear genus''. This genus is then re-obtained using Leibniz combinations of the {\martial_i}. We use Nadeau-Tewari's $q$-analogue of Klyachko's genus to study the equidistribution of $\ell$ and comaj on $[n]\choose k$, generalizing known results on $S_n$.

Abstract:This note revisits localisation and patching method in the setting of generalised unitary groups. Introducing certain subgroups of relative elementary unitary groups, we develop relative versions of the conjugation calculus and the commutator calculus in unitary groups, which are both more general, and substantially easier than the ones available in the literature. For the general linear group such relative commutator calculus has been recently developed by the first and the third authors. As an application we prove the mixed commutator formula, for two form ideals of a form ring. This answers two problems posed in a paper by Alexei Stepanov and the second author.

Abstract:For a compact set $K\subset \mathbb C,$ a finite positive Borel measure $\mu$ on $K,$ and $1 \le t < ı,$ let $\text{Rat}(K)$ be the set of rational functions with poles off $K$ and let $R^t(K, \mu)$ be the closure of $\text{Rat}(K)$ in $L^t(\mu).$ For a bounded Borel subset $\mathcal D\subset \mathbb C,$ let $\area_{\mathcal D}$ denote the area (Lebesgue) measure restricted to $\mathcal D$ and let $H^ı(\mathcal D)$ be the weak-star closed sub-algebra of $L^ı(\area_{\mathcal D})$ spanned by $f,$ bounded and analytic on $\mathbb C\setminus E_f$ for some compact subset $E_f \subset \mathbb C\setminus \mathcal D.$ We show that if $R^t(K, \mu)$ contains no non-trivial direct $L^t$ summands, then there exists a Borel subset $\mathcal R \subset K$ whose closure contains the support of $\mu$ and there exists an isometric isomorphism and a weak-star homeomorphism $\rho$ from $R^t(K, \mu) \cap L^\infty(\mu)$ onto $H^\infty(\mathcal R)$ such that $\rho(r) = r$ for all $r\in\text{Rat}(K).$ Consequently, we obtain some structural decomposition theorems for $\rtkmu$.

Abstract:This paper is an attempt to find out which properties of a finite group G can be expressed in terms of commutators of elements of coprime orders. A criterion of solubility of G in terms of such commutators is obtained. We also conjecture that every element of a nonabelian simple group is a commutator of elements of coprime orders and we confirm this conjecture for the alternating groups.
