Abstract:We show that elements of unital $C^*$-algebras without tracial states are finite sums of commutators. Moreover, the number of commutators involved is bounded, depending only on the given $C^*$-algebra.

Abstract:We show that a unital ring is generated by its commutators as an ideal if and only if there exists a natural number $N$ such that every element is a sum of $N$ products of pairs of commutators. We show that one can take $N \leq 2$ for matrix rings, and that one may choose $N \leq 3$ for rings that contain a direct sum of matrix rings -- this in particular applies to C*-algebras that are properly infinite or have real rank zero. For Jiang-Su-stable C*-algebras, we show that $N\leq 6$ can be arranged. For arbitrary rings, we show that every element in the commutator ideal admits a power that is a sum of products of commutators. We prove that a C*-algebra cannot be a radical extension over a proper ideal, and we use this to deduce that a C*-algebra is generated by its commutators as a not necessarily closed ideal if and only if every element is a finite sum of products of pairs of commutators.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space that does not contain any copy of $\ell^1$ and $\A$ be a non commutative $C^*$-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from $\A$ into $E^*$ is compact, thus answering a question of Pe\l czynski. As application, we show that if $G$ is a compact metrizable abelian group and $\Lambda$ is a Riesz subset of its dual then every countably additive $\A^*$-valued measure with bounded variation and whose Fourier transform is supported by $\Lambda$ has relatively compact range. Extensions of the same result to symmetric spaces of measurable operators are also presented.

Abstract:We investigate the property of commutator-simplicity in algebras from both algebraic and analytic perspectives. We demonstrate that a large class of algebras possess this property. As an analytic analog, we introduce the concept of topological commutator-simplicity for Banach algebras and establish that a -unital -algebra is topological commutator-simple if and only if its multiplier algebra is. Furthermore, we explore the applications of commutator-simplicity to certain equations involving commutators, emphasizing its relevance in the study of derivations. Specifically, we obtain that every continuous local derivation on is a derivation when G is a unimodular locally compact group with a diagonal bounded weight .

Sequential commutation in tracial von Neumann algebras

Abstract:Recall that a unitary in a tracial von Neumann algebra is Haar if $\tau(u^n)=0$ for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. We introduce and study a new Borel equivalence relation $\sim_N$ on the set of Haar unitaries in a diffuse tracial von Neumann algebra $N$. Two Haar unitaries $u,v$ in $\mathcal{U}(N)$ are related if there exists a finite path of sequentially commuting Haar unitaries in an ultrapower $N^\mathcal{U}$, beginning at $u$ and ending at $v$. We show that for any diffuse tracial von Neumann algebra $N$, the equivalence relation $\sim_N$ admits either 1 orbit or uncountably many orbits. We characterize property Gamma in terms of path length and number of orbits of $\sim_N$ and also show the existence of non-Gamma II$_1$ factors so that $\sim_N$ admits only 1 orbit. Examples where $\sim_N$ admits uncountably many orbits include $N$ having positive 1-bounded entropy: $h(N)>0$. As a key example, we explicitly describe $\sim_{L(\mathbb{F}_t)}$ for the free group factors. Using these ideas we introduce a numerical invariant for diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras called the commutation diameter, with applications to elementary equivalence classification. We compute lower and upper bounds for the commutation diameter in various examples. Notably we obtain non-trivial lower bounds for the family of arbitrary graph products $N$ of diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras whose underlying graph is connected and has diameter at least 4, and distinguish them up to elementary equivalence from the [CIKE23] exotic factors, despite satisfying $h(N)\leq 0$.

Abstract:We prove that any tensor product factorization with a commutative factor of a modular group algebra over a prime field comes from a direct product decomposition of the group basis. This extends previous work by Carlson and Kovács for the commutative case and answers a question of them in some cases.

Abstract:Let $C_\varphi$ be a composition operator acting on the Hardy space of the unit disc $H^p$ ($1\leq p < \infty$), which is embedded in a $C_0$-semigroup of composition operators $\mathcal{T}=(C_{\varphi_t})_{t\geq 0}.$ We investigate whether the commutant or the bicommutant of $C_\varphi$, or the commutant of the semigroup $\mathcal{T}$, are isomorphic to subalgebras of continuous functions defined on a connected set. In particular, it allows us to derive results about the existence of non-trivial idempotents (and non-trivial orthogonal projections if $p=2$) lying in such sets. Our methods also provide results concerning the minimality of the commutant and the double commutant property, in the sense that they coincide with the closure in the weak operator topology of the unital algebra generated by the operator. Moreover, some consequences regarding the extended eigenvalues and the strong compactness of such operators are derived. This extends previous results of Lacruz, León-Saavedra, Petrovic and Rodríguez-Piazza, Fernández-Valles and Lacruz and Shapiro on linear fractional composition operators acting on $H^2$.

Abstract:We associate a $C^*$-algebra to a partial action of the integers acting on the base space of a vector bundle, using the framework of Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. We investigate the structure of the fixed point algebra under the canonical gauge action, and show that it arises from a continuous field of $C^*$-algebras over the base space, generalising results of Vasselli. We also analyse the ideal structure, and show that for a free action, ideals correspond to open invariant subspaces of the base space. This shows that if the action is free and minimal, then the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra is simple. Finally we establish a bijective corrrespondence between tracial states and invariant measures on the base space, thereby calculating part of the Elliott invariant. This generalizes results about the $C^*$-algebras associated to homeomorphisms twisted by vector bundles of Adamo, Archey, Forough, Georgescu, Jeong, Strung and Viola.

The Blackadar-Handelman theorem for non-unital C*-algebras

Abstract:A well-known theorem of Blackadar and Handelman states that every unital stably finite C*-algebra has a bounded quasitrace. Rather strong generalizations of stable finiteness to the non-unital case can be obtained by either requiring the multiplier algebra to be stably finite, or alternatively requiring it to be at least stably not properly infinite. This paper deals with the question whether the Blackadar-Handelman result can be extended to the non-unital case with respect to these generalizations of stable finiteness. For suitably well-behaved C*-algebras there is a positive result, but none of the non-unital versions holds in full generality. Two examples of C*-algebras are constructed. The first one is a non-unital, stably commutative C*-algebra $A$ that contradicts the weakest possible generalization of the Blackadar-Handelman theorem: The multiplier algebras of all matrix algebras over $A$ are finite, while $A$ has no bounded quasitrace. The second example is a non-unital, simple C*-algebra $B$ that is stably non-stable, i.e. no matrix algebra over $B$ is a stable C*-algebra. In fact, the multiplier algebras over all matrix algebras of this C*-algebra are not properly infinite. Moreover, the C*-algebra $B$ has no bounded quasitrace and therefore gives a simple counterexample to a possible generalization of the Blackadar-Handelman theorem.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete group acting on a compact Hausdorff space $X$. Given $x\in X$, and $\mu\in\text{Prob}(X)$, we introduce the notion of contraction of $\mu$ towards $x$ with respect to unitary elements of a group von Neumann algebra not necessarily coming from group elements. Using this notion, we study relative commutants of subalgebras in tracial crossed product von Neumann algebras. The results are applied to negatively curved groups and $\text{SL}(d,\mathbb{Z})$, $d \geq 2$.

Non-commutative factorizations and finite-dimensional representations of free algebras

Abstract:A very first step to develop non-commutative algebraic geometry is the arithmetic of polynomials in non-commuting variables over a commutative field, that is, the study of elements in free associative algebras. This investigation is presented as a natural extension of the classical theory in one variable by using Leavitt algebras, which are localizations of free algebras with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by an ideal of codimension 1. In particular to any polynomial in n non-commuting variables with non-zero constant term we associate a finite-dimensional module over the free algebra of rank n, which turns out to be simple if and only if the polynomial is irreducible. This approach leads to new insights in the study of the factorization of polynomials into irreducible ones and other related topics, such as an algorithm to divide polynomials or to compute the greatest common divisor between them, or a description of similar polynomials. The case of polynomials with zero constant term reduces to an open question whether the intersection of nonunital subalgebras of codimension 1 in a free associative algebra is trivial, that is, 0.

Towards a classification of unitary elements of C*-algebras

Abstract:In [6] the author conjectures and partially shows that the Cuntz semigroup classifies unitary elements of unital AF-algebras. We provide a complete proof by addressing the existence part of the conjecture, under a mild adjustment of both domain and codomain of the functor Cu. We also tackle the classification beyond the AF case and more particularly, we look at unitary elements of what we call AH$_1$-algebras. We obtain positive progress as far as the existence part is concern. Nevertheless, we reveal some crucial information needed for the uniqueness part of the classification that the Cuntz semigroup fails to capture.

Trivial Endomorphisms of the Calkin Algebra

Abstract:We prove that it is consistent with ZFC that every unital endomorphism of the Calkin algebra $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ is unitarily equivalent to an endomorphism of $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ which is liftable to a unital endomorphism of $\mathcal{B}(H)$. We use this result to classify all unital endomorphisms of $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ up to unitary equivalence by the Fredholm index of the image of the unilateral shift. As a further application, we show that it is consistent with ZFC that the class of $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras that embed into $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ is not closed under tensor product nor countable inductive limit.

Abstract:We apply to operator algebra theory a monotone selection principle which apparently escaped attention (of operator algebra theorists) so far. This principle relates to the basic order theoretic characterisation of von Neumann algebras given by Kadison, and the simplified form this result takes in separable Hilbert spaces. In the separable case we need only consider increasing sequences rather than increasing nets. We apply an argument of Klaus Floret to show that, within the realm of commutativity, there exists a general monotone selection principle providing for this simplification. Thereby we obtain a valuable shortcut and a handy tool for related purposes. Actually, a more general selection principle is proved within the framework of vector lattices.

Abstract:Let K〈X〉 be a finite generated free associative algebra over a field K of characteristic zero and let f,g∈K〈X〉 generate their centralizer respectively. Assume that the f and g are algebraically independent, the leading homogeneous components of f and g are algebraically dependent and deg(f)∤deg(g), deg(g)∤deg(f). In this article, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture of Jie-Tai Yu that deg([f,g])>min{deg(f),deg(g)}, which is closely related to the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉. We also obtain a counterexample to another related conjecture of Makar-Limanov and Jie-Tai Yu stated in terms of Malcev–Neumann formal power series. In view of the counterexamples we formulate two open problems concerning degree estimate for commutators in view of the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉.The counterexamples in this article are constructed by applying the description of the free algebra K〈X〉 considered as a bimodule of K[u] where u is a monomial which is not a power of another monomial and the solution the equation [um,s]=[un,r] with unknowns r,s∈K〈X〉. The newly discovered description and the solution of the equation in this article are closely related to the combinatorial and computational aspects of free associative algebras, hence have their own independent interests.

We study the structure of rings which satisfy the von Neumann regularity of commutators, and call a ring [math] C-regular if [math] for all [math], [math] in [math]. For a C-regular ring [math], we prove [math], where [math], [math], [math], [math] are the Jacobson radical, upper nilradical, Wedderburn radical, and center of a given ring [math], respectively, and [math] denotes the polynomial ring with a set [math] of commuting indeterminates over [math]; we also prove that [math] is semiprime if and only if the right (left) singular ideal of [math] is zero. We provide methods to construct C-regular rings which are neither commutative nor von Neumann regular, from any given ring. Moreover, for a C-regular ring [math], the following are proved to be equivalent: (i) [math] is Abelian; (ii) every prime factor ring of [math] is a duo domain; (iii) [math] is quasi-duo; and (iv) [math] is reduced.

Inclusions of simple C$^*$-algebras arising from compact group actions

Abstract:Inclusions of operator algebras have long been studied. In particular, inclusions arising from actions of compact groups on factors were studied by Izumi-Longo-Popa and others. The correspondence between intermediate subfactors and subgroups is called the Galois correspondence. Analogues for actions on C$^*$-algebras have been studied by Izumi, Cameron-Smith, Peligrad, and others. In this article, we show the Galois correspondence for quasi-product actions of compact groups on C*-algebras. The notion of a quasi-product action was introduced by Bratteli-Elliott-Kishimoto. Recently, Izumi proved that every minimal action with a simple fixed-point algebra is a quasi-product action. According to these results, we get the Galois correspondence for minimal actions of compact groups with separable simple fixed point algebras. In addition, this paper provides another proof of the Galois correspondence for isometrically shift-absorbing actions and free product actions.
