Abstract:We prove that the space of traces $\text{T}(A)$ of the unital full free product $A=A_1*A_2$ of two unital, separable $C^*$-algebras $A_1$ and $A_2$ is typically a Poulsen simplex, i.e., a simplex whose extreme points are dense. We deduce that $\text{T}(A)$ is a Poulsen simplex whenever $A_1$ and $A_2$ have no $1$-dimensional representations, e.g., if $A_1$ and $A_2$ are finite dimensional with no $1$-dimensional direct summands. Additionally, we characterize when the space of traces of a free product of two countable groups is a Poulsen simplex. Our main technical contribution is a new perturbation result for pairs of von Neumann subalgebras $(M_1,M_2)$ of a tracial von Neumann algebra $M$ which gives necessary conditions ensuring that $M_1$ and a small unitary perturbation of $M_2$ generate a II$_1$ factor.

Abstract:Separable simple nuclear C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero have been classified by their K-theory. In this paper, we will show that the class of separable simple C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero is large enough to contain many interesting C*-algebras. Using the notion of approximately AC tracial states, we give a necessary and a sufficient condition for a separable simple C*-algebra with countably many extremal tracial states to have tracial topological rank zero. We also show that the condition always holds for a certain familiar class of simple C*-algebras. For example, we show that tracial states on a unital C*-algebra which is an inductive limit of type I C*-algebras are approximately AC.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid. We call a tracial state $\tau$ on a general groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$ canonical if $\tau=\tau|_{C_0(\mathcal{G}^{(0)})} \circ E$, where $E:C^*_\nu(\mathcal{G}) \to C_0(\mathcal{G}^{(0)})$ is the canonical conditional expectation. In this paper, we consider so-called fixed point traces on $C_c(\mathcal{G})$, and prove that $\mathcal{G}$ is essentially free if and only if any tracial state on $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$ is canonical and any fixed point trace is extendable to $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$.

Abstract:Motivated by classical investigation of conjugation invariant positive-definite functions on discrete groups, we study tracial central states on universal C*-algebras associated with compact quantum groups, where centrality is understood in the sense of invariance under the adjoint action. We fully classify such states on $q$-deformations of compact Lie groups, on free orthogonal quantum groups, quantum permutation groups and on quantum hyperoctahedral groups.

Abstract:Let C be a unital AH-algebra and let A be a unital separable simple C-algebra with tracial rank no more than one. Suppose that φ, ψ : C → A are two unital monomorphisms. With some restriction on C, we show that φ and ψ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if [φ] = [ψ] in KL(C,A) τ ◦ φ = τ ◦ ψ for all tracial states of A and φ = ψ, where φ and ψ are homomorphisms from U0(C)/CU(C) → U0(A)/CU(A) induced by φ and ψ, respectively, and where CU(C) and CU(A) are closures of the subgroup generated by commutators of the unitary groups of C and B. A more practical but approximate version of the above is also presented.

Abstract:We show that if A is a unital C * -algebra with tracial topological rank r (and write TR(A) = r) and dimX = k, then TR(A ⊗ C(X)) ≤ r + k. Suppose that TR(B) = k. It is shown that TR(A ⊗ B) < r+k if both A and B are assumed to be simple, or B is an AH-algebra. Examples are also given, which show that the corresponding equality could not hold in general.

Abstract:This paper presents a survey of results on traces and quasitraces on C$^*$-algebras, and it provides some new results on traces on ultrapowers and on the existence of faithful traces. As for the former, we exhibit a sequence of traceless simple, separable, unital, nuclear C$^*$-algebras whose ultrapower does admit a quasitrace (and likely also a trace). We characterize in different ways C$^*$-algebras that admit a faithful trace, respectively, where each quotient of the C$^*$-algebra admits a faithful trace.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of tracial equivalence for C*-algebras. Let A and B be two unital separable C*-algebras. If they are tracially equivalent, then there are two sequences of asymptotically multiplicative contractive completely positive linear maps phi(n) : A -> B and psi(n) : B -> A with a tracial condition such that {phi(n) circle phi(n)} and {psi(n) circle phi(n)} are tracially approximately inner. Let A and B be two unital separable simple C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero. It is proved that A and B are tracially equivalent if and only if A and B have order isomorphic ranges of tracial. states. For the Cantor minimal systems (X-1, sigma(1)) and (X-2, sigma(2)), using a result of Giordano, Putnam and Skau, we show that two such dynamical systems are (topological) orbit equivalent if and only if the associated crossed products C(X-1) x (sigma 1)Z and C(X-2) x sigma(2) Z are tracially equivalent.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of operator algebras -- tracially complete C*-algebras -- as a vehicle for transferring ideas and results between C*-algebras and their tracial von Neumann algebra completions. We obtain structure and classification results for amenable tracially complete C*-algebras satisfying an appropriate version of Murray and von Neumann's property gamma for II_1 factors. In a precise sense, these results fit between Connes' celebrated theorems for injective II_1 factors and the unital classification theorem for separable simple nuclear C*-algebras. The theory also underpins arguments for the known parts of the Toms-Winter conjecture.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a class of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a class of unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebras which have tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, $\rm SP$ property, $m$-almost divisible, weakly $(m, n)$-divisible). Then $A$ has tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, $\rm SP$ property, weakly $m$-almost divisible, secondly weakly $(m, n)$-divisible) for any simple unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebra $A$ in the class of this generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. As an application, Let $A$ be an infinite dimensional unital simple ${\rm C^*}$-algebra, and let $B$ be a centrally large subalgebra of $A$. If $B$ is tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing, then $A$ is tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing. This result was obtained by Archey, Buck and Phillips in \cite{AJN}.
Tracial States and $\mathbb{G}$-Invariant States of Discrete Quantum Groups

Abstract:We investigate the tracial states and $\mathbb{G}$-invariant states on the reduced $C^*$-algebra $C_r(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ of a discrete quantum group $\mathbb{G}$. Here, we denote its dual compact quantum group by $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$. Our main result is that a state on $C_r(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ is tracial if and only if it is $\mathbb{G}$-invariant. This generalizes a known fact for unimodular discrete quantum groups and builds upon the work of Kalantar, Kasprzak, Skalski, and Vergnioux. As one consequence of this, we find that $C_r(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ is nuclear and admits a tracial state if and only if $\mathbb{G}$ is amenable. This resolves an open problem due to C.-K. Ng and Viselter, and Crann, in the discrete case. As another consequence, we prove that tracial states on $C_r(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ "concentrate" on $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}_F$, where $\mathbb{G}_F$ is the cokernel of the Furstenberg boundary. Furthermore, given certain assumptions, we characterize the existence of traces on $C_r(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ in terms of whether or not $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}_F$ is Kac type. We also characterize the uniqueness of (idempotent) traces in terms of whether not $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}_F$ is equal to the canonical Kac quotient of $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$. These results rely on the following, of which we give proofs: Sołtan's canonical Kac quotient construction, whether it is applied to the universal or the reduced CQG $C^*$-algebra of $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$ (when the latter admits a trace), yields the maximal Kac type closed quantum subgroup of $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$.

Abstract:We associate a $C^*$-algebra to a partial action of the integers acting on the base space of a vector bundle, using the framework of Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. We investigate the structure of the fixed point algebra under the canonical gauge action, and show that it arises from a continuous field of $C^*$-algebras over the base space, generalising results of Vasselli. We also analyse the ideal structure, and show that for a free action, ideals correspond to open invariant subspaces of the base space. This shows that if the action is free and minimal, then the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra is simple. Finally we establish a bijective corrrespondence between tracial states and invariant measures on the base space, thereby calculating part of the Elliott invariant. This generalizes results about the $C^*$-algebras associated to homeomorphisms twisted by vector bundles of Adamo, Archey, Forough, Georgescu, Jeong, Strung and Viola.

Abstract:Abstract We construct two types of unital separable simple $C^*$ -algebras: $A_z^{C_1}$ and $A_z^{C_2}$ , one exact but not amenable, the other nonexact. Both have the same Elliott invariant as the Jiang–Su algebra – namely, $A_z^{C_i}$ has a unique tracial state, $$ \begin{align*} \left(K_0\left(A_z^{C_i}\right), K_0\left(A_z^{C_i}\right)_+, \left[1_{A_z^{C_i}} \right]\right)=(\mathbb{Z}, \mathbb{Z}_+,1), \end{align*} $$ and $K_{1}\left (A_z^{C_i}\right )=\{0\}$ ( $i=1,2$ ). We show that $A_z^{C_i}$ ( $i=1,2$ ) is essentially tracially in the class of separable ${\mathscr Z}$ -stable $C^*$ -algebras of nuclear dimension $1$ . $A_z^{C_i}$ has stable rank one, strict comparison for positive elements and no $2$ -quasitrace other than the unique tracial state. We also produce models of unital separable simple nonexact (exact but not nuclear) $C^*$ -algebras which are essentially tracially in the class of simple separable nuclear ${\mathscr Z}$ -stable $C^*$ -algebras, and the models exhaust all possible weakly unperforated Elliott invariants. We also discuss some basic properties of essential tracial approximation.

Abstract:We revisit the notion of tracial approximation for unital simple C*-algebras.
