Abstract:We prove that any tensor product factorization with a commutative factor of a modular group algebra over a prime field comes from a direct product decomposition of the group basis. This extends previous work by Carlson and Kovács for the commutative case and answers a question of them in some cases.

Abstract:We prove some unique factorization results for tensor products of free quantum group factors. They are type III analogues of factorization results for direct products of bi-exact groups established by Ozawa and Popa. In the proof, we first take continuous cores of the tensor products, which satisfy a condition similar to condition (AO), and discuss some factorization properties for the continuous cores. We then deduce factorization properties for the original type III factors. We also prove some unique factorization results for crossed product von Neumann algebras by direct products of bi-exact groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a discrete group. Given unital $G$-$C^*$-algebras $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, we give an abstract condition under which every $G$-subalgebra $\mathcal{C}$ of the form $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{C}\subset \mathcal{A}\otimes_{\text{min}}\mathcal{B}$ is a tensor product. This generalizes the well-known splitting results in the context of $C^*$-algebras by Zacharias and Zsido. As an application, we prove a topological version of the Intermediate Factor theorem. When a product group $G=\Gamma_1\times\Gamma_2$ acts (by a product action) on the product of corresponding $\Gamma_i$-boundaries $\partial\Gamma_i$, using the abstract condition, we show that every intermediate subalgebra $C(X)\subset\mathcal{C}\subset C(X)\otimes_{\text{min}}C(\partial\Gamma_1\times \partial\Gamma_2)$ is a tensor product (under some additional assumptions on $X$). This can be considered as a topological version of the Intermediate Factor theorem. We prove that our assumptions are necessary and cannot generally be relaxed. We also introduce the notion of a uniformly rigid action for $C^*$-algebras and use it to give various classes of inclusions $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{A}\otimes_{\text{min}}\mathcal{B}$ for which every invariant intermediate algebra is a tensor product.

Abstract:Let be a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra with Cartan subalgebra . We prove a unique factorization property for tensor products of parabolic Verma modules. More generally, we prove unique factorization for products of characters of parabolic Verma modules when restricted to certain subalgebras of . These include fixed point subalgebras of under subgroups of diagram automorphisms of and twisted graph automorphisms in the affine case.

Abstract:Consider a pair of elements $f$ and $g$ in a commutative ring $Q$. Given a matrix factorization of $f$ and another of $g$, the tensor product of matrix factorizations, which was first introduced by Knörrer and later generalized by Yoshino, produces a matrix factorization of the sum $f+g$. We will study the tensor product of $d$-fold matrix factorizations, with a particular emphasis on understanding when the construction has a non-trivial direct sum decomposition. As an application of our results, we construct indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich modules over hypersurface domains of a certain form.

Abstract:We study the non-uniqueness of factorizations of non zero-divisors into atoms (irreducibles) in noncommutative rings. To do so, we extend concepts from the commutative theory of non-unique factorizations to a noncommutative setting. Several notions of factorizations as well as distances between them are introduced. In addition, arithmetical invariants characterizing the non-uniqueness of factorizations such as the catenary degree, the $\omega$-invariant, and the tame degree, are extended from commutative to noncommutative settings. We introduce the concept of a cancellative semigroup being permutably factorial, and characterize this property by means of corresponding catenary and tame degrees. Also, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be a weak transfer homomorphism from a cancellative semigroup to its reduced abelianization. Applying the abstract machinery we develop, we determine various catenary degrees for classical maximal orders in central simple algebras over global fields by using a natural transfer homomorphism to a monoid of zero-sum sequences over a ray class group. We also determine catenary degrees and the permutable tame degree for the semigroup of non zero-divisors of the ring of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative domain using a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative semigroup.

On factorization and vector bundles of conformal blocks from vertex algebras

Abstract:Representations of vertex operator algebras define sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on moduli of stable pointed curves. Assuming certain finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, we prove that such sheaves satisfy the factorization conjecture and consequently are vector bundles. Factorization is essential to a recursive formulation of invariants, like ranks and Chern classes, and to produce new constructions of rational conformal field theories and cohomological field theories.

Abstract:Inspired by the study of vertex operator algebra extensions, we answer the question of when the category of local modules over a commutative exact algebra in a braided finite tensor category is a (non-semisimple) modular tensor category. Along the way we provide sufficient conditions for the category of local modules to be rigid, pivotal and ribbon. We also discuss two ways to construct such commutative exact algebras. The first is the class of simple current algebras and the second is using right adjoints of central tensor functors. Furthermore, we discuss Witt equivalence and its relation with extensions of VOAs.

Abstract:We prove cocontinuity of the $\max$-tensor product of C*-categories and develop a framework to perform factorization homology in a C*-setting. In such context, we specialize some results of D. Ben-Zvi, A. Brochier and D. Jordan. As a consequence of our constructions, we realize quantum Hamiltonian reduction in terms of bimodules over a factor $N$. We also provide a GNS-type reconstruction theorem for C*-algebra objects of in categories of bimodules over a II_1-factor, enhancing a realization theorem due to C. Jones and D. Penneys.

Non-commutative factorizations and finite-dimensional representations of free algebras

Abstract:A very first step to develop non-commutative algebraic geometry is the arithmetic of polynomials in non-commuting variables over a commutative field, that is, the study of elements in free associative algebras. This investigation is presented as a natural extension of the classical theory in one variable by using Leavitt algebras, which are localizations of free algebras with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by an ideal of codimension 1. In particular to any polynomial in n non-commuting variables with non-zero constant term we associate a finite-dimensional module over the free algebra of rank n, which turns out to be simple if and only if the polynomial is irreducible. This approach leads to new insights in the study of the factorization of polynomials into irreducible ones and other related topics, such as an algorithm to divide polynomials or to compute the greatest common divisor between them, or a description of similar polynomials. The case of polynomials with zero constant term reduces to an open question whether the intersection of nonunital subalgebras of codimension 1 in a free associative algebra is trivial, that is, 0.

On squares of representations of compact Lie algebras

Abstract:We study how tensor products of representations decompose when restricted from a compact Lie algebra to one of its subalgebras. In particular, we are interested in tensor squares which are tensor products of a representation with itself. We show in a classification-free manner that the sum of multiplicities and the sum of squares of multiplicities in the corresponding decomposition of a tensor square into irreducible representations has to strictly grow when restricted from a compact semisimple Lie algebra to a proper subalgebra. For this purpose, relevant details on tensor products of representations are compiled from the literature. Since the sum of squares of multiplicities is equal to the dimension of the commutant of the tensor-square representation, it can be determined by linear-algebra computations in a scenario where an a priori unknown Lie algebra is given by a set of generators which might not be a linear basis. Hence, our results offer a test to decide if a subalgebra of a compact semisimple Lie algebra is a proper one without calculating the relevant Lie closures, which can be naturally applied in the field of controlled quantum systems.

Abstract:We develop some foundations of commutative algebra, with a view towards algebraic geometry, in symmetric tensor categories. Most results establish analogues of classical theorems, in tensor categories which admit a tensor functor to some tensor category verifying specific conditions. This is in line with the current program which aims to describe tensor categories by their tensor functors to incompressible categories. We place particular emphasis on the notion of observable subgroups of affine group schemes in tensor categories, which in particular leads to some further insight into observability for classical affine group schemes.

Abstract:Given an element $f$ in a regular local ring, we study matrix factorizations of $f$ with $d \ge 2$ factors, that is, we study tuples of square matrices $(\varphi_1,\varphi_2,\dots,\varphi_d)$ such that their product is $f$ times an identity matrix of the appropriate size. Several well known properties of matrix factorizations with $2$ factors extend to the case of arbitrarily many factors. For instance, we show that the stable category of matrix factorizations with $d\ge 2$ factors is naturally triangulated and we give explicit formula for the relevant suspension functor. We also extend results of Knörrer and Solberg which identify the category of matrix factorizations with the full subcategory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a certain non-commutative algebra $\Gamma$. As a consequence of our findings, we observe that the ring $\Gamma$ behaves, homologically, like a "non-commutative hypersurface ring" in the sense that every finitely generated module over $\Gamma$ has an eventually $2$-periodic projective resolution.

Abstract:We describe all finite connected 3-transposition groups whose Matsuo algebras have nontrivial factors that are Jordan algebras. As a corollary, we show that if F is a field of characteristic 0, then there exist infinitely many primitive axial algebras of Jordan type 1/2 over F that are not factors of Matsuo algebras. As an illustrative example, we prove this for an exceptional Jordan algebra over F.

Abstract:We introduced a non-symmetric tensor product of any two states or any two representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated with a certain non-cocommutative comultiplication in previous our work.
