Abstract:Consider a pair of elements $f$ and $g$ in a commutative ring $Q$. Given a matrix factorization of $f$ and another of $g$, the tensor product of matrix factorizations, which was first introduced by Knörrer and later generalized by Yoshino, produces a matrix factorization of the sum $f+g$. We will study the tensor product of $d$-fold matrix factorizations, with a particular emphasis on understanding when the construction has a non-trivial direct sum decomposition. As an application of our results, we construct indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich modules over hypersurface domains of a certain form.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the tensor product of d - fold matrix factorizations, especially to understand under what circumstances this construction has a non - trivial direct sum decomposition. Specifically, the goals of the paper include:
1. **Generalize existing theories**: Further generalize the construction method of the tensor product of matrix factorizations proposed by Knörrer and Yoshino, and extend it to the case of d - fold matrix factorizations.
2. **Study decomposition properties**: Explore when the tensor product of d - fold matrix factorizations has a non - trivial direct sum decomposition, that is, when it can be decomposed into multiple non - zero sub - modules.
3. **Apply to specific modules**: Use these results to construct indecomposable maximal Cohen - Macaulay modules and Ulrich modules over hypersurface domains.
### Specific problems and goals
- **Construction of tensor product**: Define and study the tensor product of d - fold matrix factorizations, and give its basic properties, such as additivity and associativity.
- **Decomposition properties**: Analyze the decomposition properties of the tensor product, especially under what conditions the tensor product preserves indecomposability.
- **Application examples**: Demonstrate through specific examples how to use the tensor product to construct indecomposable Ulrich modules, and give conditions and examples.
### Main contributions
- **Theoretical generalization**: Generalize the existing theory of the tensor product of two - fold matrix factorizations to the multi - fold case, providing a unified framework.
- **Decomposition conditions**: Give the conditions for the tensor product to have a non - trivial direct sum decomposition, which helps to understand the structure of d - fold matrix factorizations.
- **Practical applications**: Through specific applications, demonstrate the practicality of these theoretical results in constructing specific types of modules.
### Related background
- **Matrix factorizations**: Matrix factorizations are a method of representing elements in a ring, especially suitable for studying modules over hypersurface rings and complete intersection rings.
- **Tensor product**: Tensor product is a method of constructing new modules by using existing modules to generate new ones. In the context of matrix factorizations, the tensor product can be used to construct new matrix factorizations.
- **Maximal Cohen - Macaulay modules and Ulrich modules**: These modules are of great significance in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, especially in the study of hypersurface singularities and complete intersection singularities.
Through these studies, the paper not only promotes the development of matrix factorization theory, but also provides new tools and methods for research in related fields.
