Abstract:In the talk, I briefly demonstrate the quantum theory for mesoscopic electric circuits and its applications. In the theory, the importance of the charge discreteness in a mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. As a result, a new kind of commutation relation for electric charge and current occurred inevitably. The charge representation, canonical current representation and pseudo-current representation are discussed extensively. It not only provides a concrete realization of mathematical models which discuss the space quantization in high energy physics and quantum gravity but also presents a sequence of applications in condensed matter physics from a different point of view. A possible generalization to coupled circuits is also proposed.

Abstract:In this work, the commutator of any two reasonable functions of several pairs of canonical conjugate operators is obtained as a sum of terms of partial derivatives of those functions (equations 9, 10 or 11). When applied to quantum mechanics, first term in the sum is formally equivalent to Poisson bracket in classical mechanics, which is a well-known result. The novelty respect other papers is the type of functions of operators considered: equations mentioned are proved valid when each function is an infinite series of positive and negative powers of these operators, as long as every series converges. Therefore, this formalism can be applied to functions such as the Coulomb potential, where the inverse of radial distance cannot be expressed as a Taylor series.

Abstract:We offer a new perspective and some advances on the 1971 Pearcy-Topping problem: is every compact operator a commutator of compact operators? Our goal is to analyze and generalize the 1970's work in this area of Joel Anderson. We reduce the general problem to a simpler sequence of finite matrix equations with norm constraints, while at the same time developing strategies for counterexamples. Our approach is to ask which compact operators are commutators AB − BA of compact operators A,B; and to analyze the implications of Joel Anderson's contributions to this problem. By extending the techniques of Anderson, we obtain new classes of operators that are commutators of compact operators beyond those obtained by the second and the fourth author. We also found obstructions to extending Anderson's techniques to obtain any positive compact operator as a commutator of compact operators. Some of these constraints involve general block-tridiagonal matrix forms for operators and some involve B(H)-ideal constraints. Finally, we provide some necessary conditions for the Pearcy-Topping problem involving singular numbers and B(H)-ideal constraints.

The Semantics of Effects: Centrality, Quantum Control and Reversible Recursion

Abstract:This thesis revolves around an area of computer science called "semantics". We work with operational semantics, equational theories, and denotational semantics. The first contribution of this thesis is a study of the commutativity of effects through the prism of monads. Monads are the generalisation of algebraic structures such as monoids, which have a notion of centre: the centre of a monoid is made of elements which commute with all others. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for a monad to have a centre. We also detail the semantics of a language with effects that carry information on which effects are central. Moreover, we provide a strong link between its equational theories and its denotational semantics. The second focus of the thesis is quantum computing, seen as a reversible effect. Physically permissible quantum operations are all reversible, except measurement; however, measurement can be deferred at the end of the computation, allowing us to focus on the reversible part first. We define a simply-typed reversible programming language performing quantum operations called "unitaries". A denotational semantics and an equational theory adapted to the language are presented, and we prove that the former is complete. Furthermore, we study recursion in reversible programming, providing adequate operational and denotational semantics to a Turing-complete, reversible, functional programming language. The denotational semantics uses the dcpo enrichment of rig join inverse categories. This mathematical account of higher-order reasoning on reversible computing does not directly generalise to its quantum counterpart. In the conclusion, we detail the limitations and possible future for higher-order quantum control through guarded recursion.

Explicit Calculation of Structural Commutation Relations for Stochastic and Dynamical Graph Grammar Rule Operators in Biological Morphodynamics

Abstract:Many emergent, non-fundamental models of complex systems can be described naturally by the temporal evolution of spatial structures with some nontrivial discretized topology, such as a graph with suitable parameter vectors labeling its vertices. For example, the cytoskeleton of a single cell, such as the cortical microtubule network in a plant cell or the actin filaments in a synapse, comprises many interconnected polymers whose topology is naturally graph-like and dynamic. The same can be said for cells connected dynamically in a developing tissue. There is a mathematical framework suitable for expressing such emergent dynamics, "stochastic parameterized graph grammars," composed of a collection of the graph- and parameter-altering rules, each of which has a time-evolution operator that suitably moves probability. These rule-level operators form an operator algebra, much like particle creation/annihilation operators or Lie group generators. Here, we present an explicit and constructive calculation, in terms of elementary basis operators and standard component notation, of what turns out to be a general combinatorial expression for the operator algebra that reduces products and, therefore, commutators of graph grammar rule operators to equivalent integer-weighted sums of such operators. We show how these results extend to "dynamical graph grammars," which include rules that bear local differential equation dynamics for some continuous-valued parameters. Commutators of such time-evolution operators have analytic uses, including deriving efficient simulation algorithms and approximations and estimating their errors. The resulting formalism is complementary to spatial models in the form of partial differential equations or stochastic reaction-diffusion processes. We discuss the potential application of this framework to the remodeling dynamics of the microtubule cytoskeleton in cortical microtubule networks relevant to plant development and of the actin cytoskeleton in, for example, a growing or shrinking synaptic spine head. Both cytoskeletal systems underlie biological morphodynamics.

Abstract:We treat the canonical commutation relations and the conventional calculus based on it as an algebraic syntax of quantum mechanics and establish a geometric semantics of this syntax. This leads us to a geometric model, the space of states with the action of time evolution operators, which is a limit of finite models. The finitary nature of the space allows to give a precise meaning and calculate various classical quantum mechanical quantities.

From Symmetries to Commutant Algebras in Standard Hamiltonians

Abstract:In this work, we revisit several families of standard Hamiltonians that appear in the literature and discuss their symmetries and conserved quantities in the language of commutant algebras. In particular, we start with families of Hamiltonians defined by parts that are local, and study the algebra of operators that separately commute with each part. The families of models we discuss include the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and its deformations, several types of spinless and spinful free-fermion models, and the Hubbard model. This language enables a decomposition of the Hilbert space into dynamically disconnected sectors that reduce to the conventional quantum number sectors for regular symmetries. In addition, we find examples of non-standard conserved quantities even in some simple cases, which demonstrates the need to enlarge the usual definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities. In the case of free-fermion models, this decomposition is related to the decompositions of Hilbert space via irreducible representations of certain Lie groups proposed in earlier works, while the algebra perspective applies more broadly, in particular also to arbitrary interacting models. Further, the von Neumann Double Commutant Theorem (DCT) enables a systematic construction of local operators with a given symmetry or commutant algebra, potentially eliminating the need for "brute-force" numerical searches carried out in the literature, and we show examples of such applications of the DCT. This paper paves the way for both systematic construction of families of models with exact scars and characterization of such families in terms of non-standard symmetries, pursued in a parallel paper.

Beyond Operator Systems

Abstract:Operator systems connect operator algebra, free semialgebraic geometry and quantum information theory. In this work we generalize operator systems and many of their theorems. While positive semidefinite matrices form the underlying structure of operator systems, our work shows that these can be promoted to far more general structures. For instance, we prove a general extension theorem which unifies the well-known homomorphism theorem, Riesz' extension theorem, Farkas' lemma and Arveson's extension theorem. On the other hand, the same theorem gives rise to new vector-valued extension theorems, even for invariant maps, when applied to other underlying structures. We also prove generalized versions of the Choi-Kraus representation, Choi-Effros theorem, duality of operator systems, factorizations of completely positive maps, and more, leading to new results even for operator systems themselves. In addition, our proofs are shorter and simpler, revealing the interplay between cones and tensor products, captured elegantly in terms of star autonomous categories. This perspective gives rise to new connections between group representations, mapping cones and topological quantum field theory, as they correspond to different instances of our framework and are thus siblings of operator systems.

Abstract:We investigate the property of commutator-simplicity in algebras from both algebraic and analytic perspectives. We demonstrate that a large class of algebras possess this property. As an analytic analog, we introduce the concept of topological commutator-simplicity for Banach algebras and establish that a -unital -algebra is topological commutator-simple if and only if its multiplier algebra is. Furthermore, we explore the applications of commutator-simplicity to certain equations involving commutators, emphasizing its relevance in the study of derivations. Specifically, we obtain that every continuous local derivation on is a derivation when G is a unimodular locally compact group with a diagonal bounded weight .

Automatic Generation of Precise and Useful Commutativity Conditions (Extended Version)

Abstract:Reasoning about commutativity between data-structure operations is an important problem with applications including parallelizing compilers, optimistic parallelization and, more recently, Ethereum smart contracts. There have been research results on automatic generation of commutativity conditions, yet we are unaware of any fully automated technique to generate conditions that are both sound and effective. We have designed such a technique, driven by an algorithm that iteratively refines a conservative approximation of the commutativity (and non-commutativity) condition for a pair of methods into an increasingly precise version. The algorithm terminates if/when the entire state space has been considered, and can be aborted at any time to obtain a partial yet sound commutativity condition. We have generalized our work to left-/right-movers and proved relative completeness. We describe aspects of our technique that lead to useful commutativity conditions, including how predicates are selected during refinement and heuristics that impact the output shape of the condition. We have implemented our technique in a prototype open-source tool Servois. Our algorithm produces quantifier-free queries that are dispatched to a back-end SMT solver. We evaluate Servois through two case studies: (i) We synthesize commutativity conditions for a range of data structures including Set, HashTable, Accumulator, Counter, and Stack. (ii) We consider an Ethereum smart contract called BlockKing, and show that Servois can detect serious concurrency-related vulnerabilities and guide developers to construct robust and efficient implementations.

Abstract:Commutator blueprints can be seen as blueprints for constructing RGD-systems over $\mathbb{F}_2$ with prescribed commutation relations. In this paper we construct several families of Weyl-invariant commutator blueprints, mostly of universal type. Together with the main result of \cite{BiRGD} we obtain new examples of exotic RGD-systems of universal type over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

Abstract:Let b is an element of BMO(R-n) and T-Omega be the singular integral operator with kernel Omega(x)/vertical bar x vertical bar(n), where Omega is homogeneous of degree zero, integrable, and has mean value zero on the unit sphere Sn-1. In this paper, using Fourier transform estimates and approximation to the operator T-Omega by integral operators with smooth kernels, it is proved that if b is an element of CMO(R-n) and Omega satisfies certain minimal size condition, then the commutator generated by b and T-Omega is a compact operator on L-p (R-n) for appropriate index p. The associated maximal operator is also considered.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to exploit the structure of strongly continuous operator semigroups in order to formulate a categorical framework in which a fresh perspective can be applied to past operator theoretic results. In particular, we investigate the inverse-producing Arens extension for Banach algebras (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 88:536-548, 1958) adapted for operators and operator semigroups by Batty and Geyer (J. Operator Theory 78(2):473-500, 2017) in this new framework, asking and answering questions using categorical language. We demonstrate that the Arens extension defines an extension functor in this setting and that it forms an adjunction with the suitably defined forgetful functor. As a by-product of this categorical framework, we also revisit the work on Banach direct sums by Lachowicz and Moszyński (Semigroup Forum 93(1):34-70, 2016). This paper can be considered as a brief exploration of the triple interface between operator semigroups, Banach algebras, and category theory.

Abstract:We supply details of a compositional specification theory we have been working on for modelling connectors and components. This supports the operations of parallel composition, for examining the structural behaviour of networked systems, logical conjunction, for supporting independent development of components, and quotient for incremental development in the form of component/connector synthesis. Our framework, a portion of which is conceptually similar to interface automata, is unique in that we've provided the first definition of quotient that can act on components exhibiting non-determinism, as well as the first definition of conjunction on this flavour of model. A refinement preorder corresponding to safe-substitutivity allows for the seamless interchanging of components and connectors without violating environmental assumptions. Our formulation of refinement also ensures that the framework enjoys strong algebraic properties. These are necessary for reasoning about components and connectors in a compositional manner.
