Abstract:In 1987 Greene introduced the notion of the finite field analogue of hypergeometric series. In this paper we give a finite field analogue of Appell series and obtain some transformation and reduction formulas. We also establish the generating functions for Appell series over finite fields.

Abstract:An integral representation of the Appell series F2(σ,α1,α2;β1,β2;x,y) is used here to obtain several finite-sum expansions in terms of the less cumbersome hypergeometric functions 2F1 and 3F2. In the case when the parameters σ, α1, α2, β1, and β2 are all positive integers, some of our results may be seen as a generalization of the finite-sum expansions of the Appell series F1 obtained by Cuyt et al. [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 5 (1999) 213–219]. Other important consequences (as well as potential applications) of our results are discussed and a listing of some useful reduction (and transformation) formulas is provided.

Abstract:Permutation polynomials over finite fields constitute an active research area and have applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, four classes of monomial complete permutation polynomials and one class of trinomial complete permutation polynomials are presented, one of which confirms a conjecture proposed by Wu et al. (Sci China Math 58:2081–2094, 2015 ). Furthermore, we give two classes of permutation trinomial, and make some progress on a conjecture about the differential uniformity of power permutation polynomials proposed by Blondeau et al. (Int J Inf Coding Theory 1:149–170, 2010 ).
A Cubic Transformation Formula for Appell-Lauricella Hypergeometric Functions over Finite Fields

Abstract:We define a finite-field version of Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric functions built from period functions in several variables, paralleling the development by Fuselier, et. al in the single variable case. We develop geometric connections between these functions and the family of generalized Picard curves. In our main result, we use finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions to establish a finite-field analogue of Koike and Shiga's cubic transformation for the Appell hypergeometric function $F_1$, proving a conjecture of Ling Long. We use our multivariable period functions to construct formulas for the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-points on the generalized Picard curves. We also give some transformation and reduction formulas for the period functions, and consequently for the finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions.

Abstract:In many seemingly diverse areas of applications, reduction, summation, and transformation formulas for various families of hypergeometric functions in one, two, and more variables are potentially useful, especially in situations when these hypergeometric functions are involved in solutions of mathematical, physical, and engineering problems that can be modeled by (for example) ordinary and partial differential equations. The main object of this article is to investigate a number of reductions and transformations for the Appell functions F-1,F-2,F-3, and F-4 in two variables and the corresponding (substantially more general) double-series identities. In particular, we observe that a certain reduction formula for the Appell function F-3 derived recently by Prajapati et al., together with other related results, were obtained more than four decades earlier by Srivastava. We give a new simple derivation of the previously mentioned Srivastava's formula . We also present a brief account of several other related results that are closely associated with the Appell and other higher-order hypergeometric functions in two variables. Abstract:This paper summarizes some known results about Appell polynomials and investigates their various analogs. The primary of these are the free Appell polynomials. In the multivariate case, they can be considered as natural analogs of the Appell polynomials among polynomials in non-commuting variables. They also fit well into the framework of free probability. For the free Appell polynomials, a number of combinatorial and "diagram" formulas are proven, such as the formulas for their linearization coefficients. An explicit formula for their generating function is obtained. These polynomials are also martingales for free Levy processes. For more general free Sheffer families, a necessary condition for pseudo-orthogonality is given. Another family investigated are the Kailath-Segall polynomials. These are multivariate polynomials, which share with the Appell polynomials nice combinatorial properties, but are always orthogonal. Their origins lie in the Fock space representations, or in the theory of multiple stochastic integrals. Diagram formulas are proven for these polynomials as well, even in the q-deformed case.

Abstract:We show that any Appell sequence can be written in closed form as a forward difference transformation of the identity. Such transformations are actually multipliers in the abelian group of the Appell polynomials endowed with the operation of binomial convolution. As a consequence, we obtain explicit expressions for higher order convolution identities referring to various kinds of Appell polynomials in terms of the Stirling numbers. Applications of the preceding results to generalized Bernoulli and Apostol-Euler polynomials of real order are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce two distinct discrete forms of Appell function $F_2$. We determine their convergence domains, integral representations as well as difference-differential equations that are satisfied by these discrete analogues of $F_2$. We have also obtained the difference-differential formulas, finite and infinite summation formulas, and a complete list of difference-differential recursion relations obeyed by these discrete functions.

Abstract:Algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points have received a lot of attention in recent years. We present a survey of this subject covering both the case of fixed genus and the asymptotic theory. A strong impetus in the asymptotic theory has come from a thorough exploitation of the method of infinite class field towers. On the other hand, we show by a counterexample that Perret’s conjecture on infinite class field towers is wrong, and so Perret’s method of infinite ramified class field towers breaks down. In the last two sections of the paper we discuss applications of algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points to coding theory and to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:Various interesting and potentially useful properties and relationships involving the Bernoulli, Euler and Genocchi polynomials have been investigated in the literature rather extensively. Recently, the present authors (Srivastava and Pinter in Appl Math Lett 17:375–380, 2004) obtained addition theorems and other relationships involving the generalized Bernoulli polynomials ${B_n^{(\alpha)}(x)}$ and the generalized Euler polynomials ${E_n^{(\alpha)}(x)}$ of order α and degree n in x. The main purpose of this sequel to some of the aforecited investigations is to give several addition formulas for a general class of Appell sequences. The addition formulas, which are derived in this paper, involve not only the generalized Bernoulli polynomials ${B_n^{(\alpha)}(x)}$ and the generalized Euler polynomials ${E_n^{(\alpha)}(x)}$ , but also the generalized Genocchi polynomials ${G_n^{(\alpha)}(x)}$ , the Srivastava polynomials ${\mathcal{S}_{n}^{N}\left( x\right)}$ , several general families of hypergeometric polynomials and such orthogonal polynomials as the Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. Some umbral-calculus generalizations of the addition formulas are also investigated.

Abstract:We generalize Burgess' results on partial Gaussian sums to arbitrary finite fields. The main ingredients are the classical method of amplification, two deep results on multiplicative energy for subsets in finite fields which are obtained respectively by the tools from additive combinatorics and geometry of numbers, and a technique of Chamizo for treating the difficulty caused by additive character. Our results include the recent works on character sums in finite fields by M.-C. Chang and S. V. Konyagin.

Abstract:It is well known that any power series over a finite field represents a rational function if and only if its sequence of coefficients is ultimately periodic. The famous Christol's Theorem states that a power series over a finite field is algebraic if and only if its sequence of coefficients is $p$-automatic. In this paper, we extend these two results to expansions of elements in the completion of a global function field under a nontrivial valuation. As application of our generalization of Christol's theorem, we answer some questions about $\beta$-expansions of formal Laurent series over finite fields.
