Abstract:In the present paper, two discrete forms of Appell function $F_1$ are introduced and studied. We examine the first discrete form in detail and give the results directly for the second. The results and identities obtained in the paper are believed to be new and may find applications in various branches of science.

We determine their convergence domains, integral representations as well as difference-differential equations that are satisfied by these discrete analogues of $F_2$. Abstract:We define a finite-field version of Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric functions built from period functions in several variables, paralleling the development by Fuselier, et. al in the single variable case. We develop geometric connections between these functions and the family of generalized Picard curves. In our main result, we use finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions to establish a finite-field analogue of Koike and Shiga's cubic transformation for the Appell hypergeometric function $F_1$, proving a conjecture of Ling Long. We use our multivariable period functions to construct formulas for the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-points on the generalized Picard curves. We also give some transformation and reduction formulas for the period functions, and consequently for the finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions.

Abstract:We measure the noise added by an atomic point contact operated as a displacement detector. With a microwave technique, we increase the measurement speed of atomic point contacts by a factor of 500. The measurement is then fast enough to detect the resonant motion of a nanomechanical beam at frequencies up to 60 MHz and sensitive enough to observe the random thermal motion of the beam at 250 mK. We demonstrate a shot-noise limited imprecision of $2.3\pm0.1\ \mathrm{fm/\sqrt{Hz}}$ and observe a $78\pm20 \mathrm{aN/\sqrt{Hz}}$ backaction force, yielding a total uncertainty in the beam's displacement that is $42\pm9$ times the standard quantum limit.

Abstract:This paper summarizes some known results about Appell polynomials and investigates their various analogs. The primary of these are the free Appell polynomials. In the multivariate case, they can be considered as natural analogs of the Appell polynomials among polynomials in non-commuting variables. They also fit well into the framework of free probability. For the free Appell polynomials, a number of combinatorial and "diagram" formulas are proven, such as the formulas for their linearization coefficients. An explicit formula for their generating function is obtained. These polynomials are also martingales for free Levy processes. For more general free Sheffer families, a necessary condition for pseudo-orthogonality is given. Another family investigated are the Kailath-Segall polynomials. These are multivariate polynomials, which share with the Appell polynomials nice combinatorial properties, but are always orthogonal. Their origins lie in the Fock space representations, or in the theory of multiple stochastic integrals. Diagram formulas are proven for these polynomials as well, even in the q-deformed case.

Abstract:In this work we extend our study on a link between automaticity and certain algebraic power series over finite fields. Our starting point is a family of sequences in a finite field of characteristic $2$, recently introduced by the first author in connection with algebraic continued fractions. By including it in a large family of recurrent sequences in an arbitrary finite field, we prove its automaticity. Then we give a criterion on automatic sequences, generalizing a previous result and this allows us to present new families of automatic sequences in an arbitrary finite field.

Abstract:It is well known that any power series over a finite field represents a rational function if and only if its sequence of coefficients is ultimately periodic. The famous Christol's Theorem states that a power series over a finite field is algebraic if and only if its sequence of coefficients is $p$-automatic. In this paper, we extend these two results to expansions of elements in the completion of a global function field under a nontrivial valuation. As application of our generalization of Christol's theorem, we answer some questions about $\beta$-expansions of formal Laurent series over finite fields.

Abstract:The paper considers the problem of representation and extension of Appell's hypergeometric functions by a special family of functions—branched continued fractions. Here, we establish new symmetric domains of the analytical continuation of Appell's hypergeometric function F2 with real and complex parameters, using their branched continued fraction expansions whose elements are polynomials in the space C2. To do this, we used a technique that extends the domain of convergence of the branched continued fraction, which is already known for a small domain, to a larger domain, as well as the PC method to prove that it is also the domain of analytical continuation. A few examples are provided at the end to illustrate this.

Abstract:We show that any Appell sequence can be written in closed form as a forward difference transformation of the identity. Such transformations are actually multipliers in the abelian group of the Appell polynomials endowed with the operation of binomial convolution. As a consequence, we obtain explicit expressions for higher order convolution identities referring to various kinds of Appell polynomials in terms of the Stirling numbers. Applications of the preceding results to generalized Bernoulli and Apostol-Euler polynomials of real order are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In this note we study one-dimensional definable sets in power series fields with perfect residue fields. Using the description of automorphisms given by Schilling, in \cite{S44}, we show that such sets are unions of existentially definable in the language of rings, allowing parameters. We deduce that if $F$ is a perfect field of positive characteristic $p$, and $X$ is a subset of the $t$-adically valued $F((t))$ that is definable in the language of valued fields with parameters from $F$, then the subfield $(X)$ generated by $X$ is either contained in $F$ or equal to $F((t^{p^n}))$, for some $n\geq0$. The proof uses our earlier work on existentially definable subsets of henselian and large fields, of which power series fields are examples.

Abstract:Since the study by Jacobi and Hecke, Hecke-type series have received extensive attention. Especially, Hecke-type series involving infinite products have attracted broad interest among many mathematicians including Kac, Peterson, Andrews, Bressoud and Liu. Motivated by the works of these people, we study Hecke-type series involving infinite products. In particular, we establish some Hecke-type series involving infinite products and then obtain the truncated versions of these series as well as some other known series of the same type. As consequences, three families of inequalities for certain partition functions are also presented. Our proofs heavily rely on a formula from the work of Zhi-Guo Liu.
