Abstract:We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. For $a,b,c,d,e,f \in \mathbb{F}_q^{\times}$, denote by $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$ the family of algebraic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$ given by the affine equation \begin{align*} C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}:ay^2+bx^2+cxy=d+ex^2y^2+fx^3y. \end{align*} The family of generalized twisted Edwards curves is a subfamily of $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$. Let $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ denote the number of points on $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this article, we find certain expressions for $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ when $af=ce$. If $c^2-4ab\neq 0$, we express $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ in terms of a $p$-adic hypergeometric function $\mathbb{G}(x)$ whose values are explicitly known for all $x\in \mathbb{F}_q$. Next, if $c^2-4ab=0$, we express $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ in terms of another $p$-adic hypergeometric function and then relate it to the traces of Frobenius endomorphisms of a family of elliptic curves. Furthermore, using the known values of the hypergeometric functions, we deduce some nice formulas for $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$.

Abstract:We study the étale fundamental group of a singular reduced connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of an arbitrary prime characteristic. It is shown that when the curve is projective, the étale fundamental group is a free product of the étale fundamental group of its normalization with a free finitely generated profinite group whose rank is well determined. A similar result is established for the tame fundamental groups of seminormal affine curves. In the affine case, we provide an Abhyankar-type complete group theoretic classification on which finite groups occur as the Galois groups for Galois étale connected covers over (singular) affine curves. An analogue of the Inertia Conjecture is also posed for certain singular curves.

Abstract:We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic [Formula: see text], for example, over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal [Formula: see text]-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.

Each family is parameterized by an open subset of the Projective line over K. Our construction is based on a remark in a paper by Howe. Later, we describe an obstruction to perusing the same technique over Q.

An Infinite Family of Artin-Schreier Curves with Minimal a-number

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and $k$ be an algebraically closed field with characteristic $p$. Booher and Cais showed that the $a$-number of a $\mathbb Z/p \mathbb Z$-Galois cover of curves $\phi: Y \to X$ must be greater than a lower bound determined by the ramification of $\phi$. In this paper, we provide evidence that the lower bound is optimal by finding examples of Artin-Schreier curves that have $a$-number equal to its lower bound for all $p$. Furthermore we use formal patching to generate infinite families of Artin-Schreier curves with $a$-number equal to the lower bound in any characteristic.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore when the Betti numbers of the coordinate rings of a projective monomial curve and one of its affine charts are identical. Given an infinite field $k$ and a sequence of relatively prime integers $a_0 = 0 < a_1 < \cdots < a_n = d$, we consider the projective monomial curve $\mathcal{C}\subset\mathbb{P}_k^{\,n}$ of degree $d$ parametrically defined by $x_i = u^{a_i}v^{d-a_i}$ for all $i \in \{0,\ldots,n\}$ and its coordinate ring $k[\mathcal{C}]$. The curve $\mathcal{C}_1 \subset \mathbb A_k^n$ with parametric equations $x_i = t^{a_i}$ for $i \in \{1,\ldots,n\}$ is an affine chart of $\mathcal{C}$ and we denote by $k[\mathcal{C}_1]$ its coordinate ring. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of a novel (Gröbner-free) combinatorial criterion that provides a sufficient condition for the equality of the Betti numbers of $k[\mathcal{C}]$ and $k[\mathcal{C}_1]$. Leveraging this criterion, we identify infinite families of projective curves satisfying this property. Also, we use our results to study the so-called shifted family of monomial curves, i.e., the family of curves associated to the sequences $j+a_1 < \cdots < j+a_n$ for different values of $j \in \mathbb N$. In this context, Vu proved that for large enough values of $j$, one has an equality between the Betti numbers of the corresponding affine and projective curves. Using our results, we improve Vu's upper bound for the least value of $j$ such that this occurs.

Explicit coverings of families of elliptic surfaces by squares of curves

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We characterize algebraic curves in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}_\mathbb{C}$ invariant under an infinite subgroup of $\textrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{C})$, $n\geq 3$. More precisely, it is shown that given a one-dimensional algebraic set in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}_\mathbb{C}$ which is invariant under an infinite subgroup of projective transformations should satisfy that each irreducible non-degenerate component is projectively equivalent to a monomial curve.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Abstract:We provide several families of compact complex curves embedded in smooth complex surfaces such that no neighborhood of the curve can be embedded in an algebraic surface. Different constructions are proposed, by patching neighborhoods of curves in projective surfaces, and blowing down exceptional curves. These constructions generalize examples recently given by S. Lvovski. One of our non algebraic argument is based on an extension theorem of S. Ivashkovich.

Abstract:We show that the infinite staircases which arise in the ellipsoid embedding functions of rigid del Pezzo surfaces can be entirely explained in terms of rational sesquicuspidal symplectic curves. Moreover, we show that these curves can all be realized algebraically, giving various new families of algebraic curves with one cusp singularity. Our main techniques are (i) a generalized Orevkov twist, and (ii) the interplay between algebraic $\Q$-Gorenstein smoothings and symplectic almost toric fibrations. Along the way we develop various methods for constructing singular algebraic (and hence symplectic) curves which may be of independent interest.

Mass formula for non-ordinary curves in one dimensional families

Abstract:This paper is about one dimensional families of cyclic covers of the projective line in positive characteristic. For each such family, we study the mass formula for the number of non-ordinary curves in the family. We prove two equations for the mass formula: the first relies on tautological intersection theory; and the second relies on the $a$-numbers of non-ordinary curves in the family. Our results generalize the Eichler--Deuring mass formula for supersingular elliptic curves; they also generalize some theorems of Ibukiyama, Katsura, and Oort about supersingular curves of genus $2$ that have an automorphism of order $3$ or order $4$. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

On the p-rank of singular curves and their smooth models

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the computation of the $p$-rank and $a$-number of singular curves and their smooth model. We consider a pair $X, X'$ of proper curves over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, where $X'$ is a singular curve which lies on a smooth projective variety, particularly on smooth projective surfaces $S$ (with $p_g(S) = 0 = q(S)$) and $X$ is the smooth model of $X'$. We determine the $p$-rank of $X$ by using the exact sequence of group schemes relating the Jacobians $J_X$ and $J_{X'}$. As an application, we determine a relation about the fundamental invariants $p$-rank and $a$-number of a family of singular curves and their smooth models. Moreover, we calculate $a$-number and find lower bound for $p$-rank of a family of smooth curves.

Abstract:For a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraic number field k , we investigate the finiteness of the set of generalized Jacobians of associated with modules defined over such that a fixed divisor representing a class of finite order in the Jacobian J of provides the torsion class in the generalized Jacobian . Various results on the finiteness and infiniteness of the set of generalized Jacobians with the above property are obtained depending on the geometric conditions on the support of , as well as on the conditions on the field k . These results are applied to the problem of the periodicity of a continued fraction expansion constructed in the field of formal power series for special elements of the field of functions of the hyperelliptic curve .

Abstract:We study the arithmetic of curves and Jacobians endowed with the action of a finite group $G$. This includes a study of the basic properties, as $G$-modules, of their $\ell$-adic representations, Selmer groups, rational points and Shafarevich-Tate groups. In particular, we show that $p^\infty$-Selmer groups are self-dual $G$-modules, and give various `$G$-descent' results for Selmer groups and rational points. Along the way we revisit, and slightly refine, a construction going back to Kani and Rosen for associating isogenies to homomorphisms between permutation representations. With a view to future applications, it is convenient to work throughout with curves that are not assumed to be geometrically connected (or even connected); such curves arise naturally when taking Galois closures of covers of curves. For lack of a suitable reference, we carefully detail how to deduce the relevant properties of such curves and their Jacobians from the more standard geometrically connected case.
